  • A few years back I installed one of my favorite wheel that BMW makes on my Z4, the 437m style. Of course BMW Z4 e89 was never made to take such large wheel, so I had to be creative and get very low profile tires to make it fit. It make the car look amazing, but at the same time, it did not forgive much over obstacles such as the shard of glass I ran over. As such, I've had to switch out the rear tires a few times and I've learned some expensive lessons along the way! Either way, I have ended up on some of the best tires you can get for my Z4, Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S.
    How to read DOT code:
    4523
45 would be the week of the year and 23 would be the year they were manufactured.

Also recently learned this.. just assumed "new" tire purchases wouldn't be so close to the end of life

Exactly! Never thought that a new tire could have less than 2 years of life left.

    I had similar scenario
When bought suv 🚙 for my wife it had decent tires on it but it just didn’t ride how big luxury suv should drive
I bought new tires 🛞 immediately noticed difference in ride. I didn’t say anything to my wife later she called me asking about ride quality and how much better suv was riding. 👍🏻

I have the Pirelli P1 on my Z4. Tyres are definitely one of the most important parts!

    I love your channel. I bought my Z4 E89 2012 today! :) Can't wait to maintain/DIY like you.
I say this as a former Michelin Tires regional sales manager. If the tire is stored well, it will not have an expiration date. It is one of the mistakes we know as true. It's something that spreads very quickly, like an urban legend. I repeat, I say this for a well-stored tire.
In humidity, in conditions where the cold-hot difference is huge (cracks may occur in some cases), etc. What I say is not valid under these circumstances.

Nice! I started watching your channel bc I just got the i3, but so funny I didn’t know you own a e89 z4, I also own a manual z4 (e85). Funny we like similar cars.

That's awesome! I like unique cars and both Z4 and i3 are definitely unique! I love having a manual, convertible car like the Z4 for those sunny days and when it's rainy and crappy, i3 does the job and is also pretty fun to drive.

When it comes to long lasting rubber, Michelin tires are the best...

Yes i think the Michelin's are slightly noisier than Goodyear asym. a lot use. Noisier tyre would suggest harder.

the car is beautiful! I'd like to go with a similar looking wire (wider) on my 2007 N52 z4. How would you recommend researching this? I like how wide your tires are - edgy without alienating the classic bmw z4 look.

I bought Fulda Sportcontact 2 (Goodyear brand) for my E91 xDrive. Terrible experience, the tires are so hard that it is unpleasant to drive. They also do not provide good handling because the sidewall and rubber is too hard making them squeak in corners when the outside temperature is below 15*C (60F). I tried reducing the pressure but it didn't help much + risk of damage and increased fuel consumption. I tortured myself for two seasons. Decided to sell them and get something else. I chose the Conti PremiumContact 7 and it's a different level, the tire is great, you can feel it working on the rim and most importantly it dampens bumps much better than the Fulda. My first impression was the same as yours. Completely different rubber to the touch as well as the look itself. The difference in price? 100 euros.

It's crazy the difference a decent tire can make. Glad you sorted it out yourself and got a good set of tires, well worth the 100 euros. I was very surprised I could feel the difference in my hands just handling the tires. Very happy with the results. Thanks for watching!

Tires don't like sitting on damp ground for any length of time... Was it garaged?

Car was garaged the entire time, very dry and above freezing all winter.

Thanks for your helpful videos! Are there any alternatives to the e89 shift knob and methods to replace only the knob itself? The entire shift knob is one piece and can't be easily swapped out.

8Jx19 and 9Jx19 296 v-spokes came standard on my Z4 Sdrive35i with low profile tires. It's not "getting creative to get low profiles". The difference on the 437s is the widths of 9Jx19 and 10Jx19. To install the 437 wider rims correctly, you would need to offset them by 13mm. 12mm or 15mm wheel spacers would give different looks but both would work. Additionally, take the time to remove the decals from your sun visors. It's an easy thing to do, and it's a visible upgrade.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  5 месяцев назад

I'm not sure I understand why I'd want to install the spacers on this set as it's fits perfectly and the tire 'sticks' out just enough but not too much for my liking.
I like the idea of removing the decals, never though of that! Thanks for watching.

@@SimpleCarGuy As long as you don't have problems with the wider tires hitting the well liners or suspension parts when turning tight, it's ok. To keep them the same distance from these parts as the OEM widths, then the spacers do. I think I tried 99% isopropyl first on those labels and then carefully and sparingly used acetone. It really gets rid of the ugly look of the labels. I enjoy your vids.. keep it up!
