    I do think it’s a life style choice having a Z4 I’m 54 kids gone live on my own so I’m at the stage where I need a bit of fun and a car that puts a big fat smile on my face every time I drive it, or get one before kids come along if you can afford running cost ect you can get a decent one for really not a lot of money and they are fun to drive 🤩🤩🤩👍 hope your ok Joel great vid mate 👍

    Absolutely love Z4’s, I’ve been lucky to have 3 over the years (2.2auto, 2.2 manual and 3.0 manual) great cars to buy total bargain which in my opinion makes it ok when it comes to running costs. As for the tech, if you enjoy driving the tech doesn’t matter at all, personally I prefer simple tech on a car. Great vids Joel 👍

    The parts are a moot point. The Z4's parts are not any more expensive than other BMWs and the Z4 is very reliable since it shares most parts with the E46 3 series - for example the DISA valve. Parts are like fuel, you have to put them in regardless of how long you keep your car. You only consider the cost of the parts to the value of the car if you intend to replace it in the near future.
    The run-flats are terrible so they need to be changed. The small steering and busy tires and suspension mean it is more tiring to commute in. The ground clearance is very low so you'll be scraping stuff more often. The cabin is small so it will quickly get stuffy, especially with two bodies, if the circulation is not turned up. And yes, the equivalent 3-series got way more gadgets such as folding mirrors on reverse.
    Hope you develop more patience with age. That old man will one day be you.

    • @nman2563
      @nman2563 4 года назад

      @stubbk3 Not big deals if you are on top of your maintenance. If you think you are going to find more reliable BMWs out there, good luck! The newer N52 engine is rock solid.

  • @kjss4345
    @kjss4345 4 месяца назад +1

    Maintenance has to be put in perspective, either buy new at 40grand or buy old at 5grand and spend 10grand in maintenence...youre still ahead buying used.

    I was originally looking at Audi TT mk2 videos when your video popped up in my suggestions box. I’m so glad I went with the Z4! I love how low you sit in it but I would agree that the ride is very stiff. I only have the 2.5 engine and I still find it stiff. I test drove a 2.0 and they are somewhat softer but I wanted an inline 6 engine as opposed to the 4 pot 2.0l so I wasn’t bothered about the compromised ride quality. If anyone is thinking of getting a Z4 I would say to Factor in the cost of replacing the run flat tyres. A lot of people comment on how the run flats tramline and follow any imperfections in the road and that is so true!

    • @itsjoel
      @itsjoel  5 лет назад

      Glad you’re enjoying your Z4. Great point about the runflats, I’d recommend any buyer factors that cost in if it hasn’t been done already 👍🏻

    • @GTIracerr
      @GTIracerr 5 лет назад +1

      @@itsjoel Owning an E92 325i myself (that also comes standard with run flats) I would recommend; don't fit runflats at all, ever. Just take an AA subscription or something. Wait half an hour for them to come and help you in the unlikely event of a flat tyre.
      For the once every 5 to 10 years (on average, I guess) that you encounter a flat, I would gladly wait a bit. Deffo not worth enduring the behaviour of the stiff runflats all the time. I bought my car a few months ago and I couldn't wait until I was able to remove the runflats. Even now on winter tyres the car drives a whole lot better. And safer, I dare to say. In the odd occasion someone else drives my car, you always got to warn them to keep both hands on the wheel in corners and stuff, because potholes and stuff will cause it to bite you unexpectedly.
      Don't get me started about the premiums you must pay to have the 'pleasure' of run flat tyres on your car. Trust me; binning them is the cheapest and best mod you can do to any BMW.

    I have a '08 Z4M coupe and my dad has an '08 cayman, we both paid pretty much the same amount for them (mine was £500 more) and for what he got in comparison to what i got is shocking really. I have 6 gears he only has 5, his is running with roughly 240 BHP, im pushing 350 and the interior is so incredibly cheap feeling its not what i imagined from a porsche. When looking for a 2 seat, affordable sports car the only real option in my mind is the Z4 and Z4M.

      When I was looking at cars in early Nov, my old man was trying to push me in the direction of a Boxster or Cayman, as he was not a fan of the Z4. He generally does not like the Bangle designed cars, but once I told him there was an M version of the E85/86 with the S54 like his E46 M3 cab had, he suddenly became more supportive of my choice of the Z4M. He's now become just as smitten with the car as I have and has even complimented it's styling cues, but is adamant that he will never like how the front end looks with the headlight design.
      We've both been amazed at just how well together my E85 M feels. Bar the typical rattles from the roofs frame, it's not got any annoying noises, rattles or squeeks. I have always loved the E86, as an old friend of mine got a brand new E86 3.0 and it was this that made me lust for the E85 and E86. To me, the E86 M, really reminds me of what a Rocket Bunny body kit looks like. The boot lid and spoiler just look amazing and the E85/86 from the rear quarter view is design perfection.
      The only negative I have to say about my own E85 M (which I think they all have) is it's tricky to get it to go into 2nd when it's still cold, but once it's all up to operating temp, it suddenly becomes a nice smooth shift. From 2008 until I stopped driving in 2016 for two years, I only averaged 3000 miles a year, yet since late Nov, I have managed to do 1000 miles already!
      A few of my non petrolhead buddies thought they were being funny when they said I had a woman's/hair dressers car, when I uploaded some pics I had taken of my E85 M. I pointed out that a car weighing about 1400KG's with 343BHP and six speed manual, was the furthest thing you could get from being a car like an SLK. Oddly enough, the mk1, MX-5 (Eunos) was/is also called the same thing, yet they are some of the best handling cars you could get and allows the driver to really push the car, as it's so well balanced. When I saw on a Z4 forum, a post where they called the E85 M a more "grown up" version of the MX-5, I had to agree. I use to own a JDM MK1 MX-5 V-Special and my E85 M really reminds me of just how dialed in that car use to be.
      I really can see me not wanting to ever get rid of this car and it's possibly the first car I've owned that my dad is constantly asking me if he could take it out for a bit of a hoon, or how he finds some odd reason he quickly needs to borrow my car, like it needs putting away in the garage, but he takes a 40 mile detour to do so lol

    Tyre pressure warning system will work on any tyres :) All it does is warns you if any wheel's average rotational speed increases by a certain amount. This indicates that the rolling circumference has reduced, which will generally be because the tyre pressure has dropped.

    With the non Z4M's, the runflats can really effect the ride and road noise. Going over to a normal tyre like the M, will improve things all round.
    BMW's luckily have a strong specialist market, so you don't need to lose quality by not going to the dealers. My family have had BMW's since the 90's and when I owned an E30 Alpina, trying to get work done by a dealer was a royal pain for me in Oxford.

    I own 2003 3.0i SMG, there are many alternates in terms of parts. The parts catalogue is online, maintenance instructions are online, non oem disa valve is around 60 usd on AliExpress. There are also repair kits for the disa valve, which are around 15 usd. For tyres, I have recently switched to non-runflats, much much better. The remarks on my side would be check if the water drains are clear, check if wheel arches and headlight covers and their seals are intact, do a waterproofness test with top up. Check carpets if they are wet. Check coolant level. Check the leaks under body. (SMG hydraulics may have leaks, not expensive to repair again). I have also wired a bluetooth receiver to the AUX on the original BMW business radio, enjoying the original sound system which is very satisfying. I have many small replacements on the car and up to now it is pretty much reliable.

    I am about to buy a Z4 about the same model engine size and age up to 6k 2021, but I think of it this way, I have a 16 Reg Peugeot (PUG) 208 1.2l to sell worth about 6K (8k when I brought it 1 year old) and to be honest it is a fantastic little car and performs well in any conditions and can overtake with plenty of power when needed. I can upgrade to a newer version or similar car and spend a few thousand more or I can have more fun for less money and spend what I save on refurbishment of the Z4 :) I am an old person ( Don't slag off old people who are driving, they are still alive, unlike younger drivers embedded into trees ;) Lol). Joking aside the savings over purchasing a newer car can keep an older more fun car on the road if you plan to keep it or even if you do not the modern upgrade will still lose thousand in resale value every year. It is all a matter of perspective and is all dead money unless older Z4's gain in price if they are looked after? My first car that actually worked was a rear-wheel-drive Vauxhall Chevette and the most fun I have ever had in 35 years of driving :) Modern cars just seem too safe until it goes wrong and I want that rear-wheel-drive feeling back in my life :) Hope you have been enjoying your Z4 :)

    Joel, you mentioned in an earlier video getting upwards of 40mpg. I’ve been driving like the granniest grandma and only ever topped it at 34mpg on a tank. Excellent review. I brought a new car recently and I purchased an extended warranty, not for mechanical issues, but electronic ones. Consider the cost of troubleshooting a short in an array of wires hidden under the dash that monitor everything in your vehicle. True, our Z's have electronic issues as well, but they pale in comparison. Lastly, analog electrical meters are death to BMW electronics. If needed only use digital electronic meters.

    • @Johnnygga
      @Johnnygga 5 лет назад +3

      It would update the look but it WILL blind other drivers like no tomorrow, even if it has projectors-the headlamps were designed around a halogen h7 filament, so no other “kits” would work correctly. HID kits nor LED bulbs, no matter what the aftermarket manufacturer says it does. Sure, they’d look bright looking at the car but behind the wheel you’d lose too much night vision due to tons of foreground light making it SEEM brighter but in reality you can see LESS.
      Sorry, I’m a big headlamp geek and I always advise against installing aftermarket HID/Xenon kits and LED bulbs since the glare willl suck for oncoming drivers. :) Stick to OEM quality bulbs like Osram/Philips or update to performance bulbs like Philips Xtremevision or Osram Nightbreakers. You won’t get that blue look in the headlights but you’ll see very nicely with an even sharper beam pattern. ;)
