its a nice looking car, sometimes these problems are down to the lack of skill of the technicians at main dealers, I had a problem with my Italian Motor cycle, took it to a guy who knows his stuff, 18 years later still running nicely
One of the pins is not tight fitting, easily sorted. Go and treat yourself to a wiring breakout kit, unplug the connector and make sure the pin male or female slides in with a slight drag, if it goes in and out like aunt dorris's foof, ie no feeling of resistance when inserting. Needs a little bend on one of the side so the pin drags when inserted job done. Buy a cheap pico scope and treat your techs with something that may help you out a lot in the future, they are about £170 for a cheap 2 channel oscilloscope. It will be one wires on one of the plugs Barry the butcher unplugged
RUclips drag testing wiring, they was looking for something obvious, instead of testing the system properly. Unfortunately I'm an auto electrician and have to sort out jobs where others have added faults by bad wiring testing methods and have to fix the original fault along with the problems added after. A great tool for you and your techs is ddtsb. Shows actual pics of faults etc along with testnprcudures. Different to autodata. Mechanical mindset also endorses diagnose Dan's global tsb database. You can even get tickets for jobs where your stumped for about £15 / £20 a job. Off real master techs for that manufacturer. Worth every penny and tax deducatable. I would check ever connector on the bcm for drag, or get your phone on macro mode and check for signs of green corrosion on pin / connector tips. Not as dramatic as everyone makes out, your techs need to get used to finding stuff like that. I have had 18 plate porsches with water ingres and bad connections stopping the car from starting. We can all make a meal of it, but it's easy enough if you have confidence. Enjoy
@@ShiftingMetal Problem is Jo, Most techs at main dealers now are skids straight out of college that rely on "pc says no", take the laptop or diagnostic equipment away and they are flippin useless........its old school stuff JO, multi meter and pin check resistance, as above, loose pin 100%
I feel your pain! As an auto electrician (with 45 years in electronics) and I’ll get a car do this to me occasionally! It’s incredibly frustrating to have to tell a customer “I don’t know, but it’s working now!” I BBC would have gone through all the relevant connectors with contact cleaner/lubricant. I would suspect an intermittent loss of supply to the ECU as that would also explain the lack of comms. Spray the engine ECU connectors with contact lube. The worst problems are when the connectors are filled with a soft silicone jelly. If that’s the case a vigorous wash with brake cleaner and blowing with compressed air will get most of it out. Remove any elastomer seals first as the brake cleaner makes them swell.
I worked for a high end UK vehicle manufacturer, one of the electrical issues was known as pin out. Only needs one pin to not be clipped in on a multi pin plug and it will fail maybe even climbing a kerb. To partially stop this each plug had to be inspected for a ratchet tie, even at chassis number 74,000 the issue of missing ties had not been resolved. Another issue was partially locked plugs on the BCM. The whole car could randomly die.
Happened on my Z4 E89. Door windows came down and stayed down. I noticed the button illumination was out. Prior to this i had random windows not going down requiring a thump of door trim panel. So i assumed bad earth. Stripped door card, unplugged connector, contact cleaner, made sure all pins home. No problems since 8 years ago.
How are they all still going on about 'staff shortages' in 2024 going into 2025? Becoming like other businesses which had shortages, but then post covid decided to just run with a skeleton staff roster anyway just for profits. Seen it so many industries. Hi Joe I appreciate you’ve had your full of this swine of a car but was a couple of suggestions worth considering from viewers on here before it goes off to the sky , has anyone looked at earth strap ? You said Fiat unplugged the ecu and plugged it back in and it fired up , maybe it does need a spray with electrical contact cleaning spray , no big outlay to give these a try , someone else suggested a second earth strap , one viewer suggested getting a member of staff to run it for a week or so , maybe some one is quite local in case shit does happen or use it for running close picking things up local , guess the more times it’s switched off and started again would hopefully bring out the gremel if it’s still there. , just a thought , best of luck what ever avenue you take 👍🏻
Sometimes you know it helps if you ring the parts dept. at dealers, because they know what parts are sold often on various vehicles. Once did this regarding Vauxhall told head gasket had gone on friends car. I checked no water in oil. Spoke to Vauxhall parts dept. straight off said egr valve. They go sucking coolant out and car just won't restart once cold or stalls when you slow down. Well known problem GM didn't want to face, certainly in UK.
I've had that a few times, take ecu plugs off, spray with wd40, I've had it before on fiats, just be a bit of corrosion on one of the connections, hopefully anyway.
Nephew bought Mini. That had problems, wouldn't start. I found the electric module, bottom right in foot well. Read online how water could get in. I noticed someone had wedged block of wood under the module. I had to sleep on it. Woke up brain wave, the plugs and sockets to the module. I noticed some plugs had chunky high power pins. My thought was overheating causing the female sockets to expand. They are made by rolling the copper female half into tubes.. So using a screw driver i pinched up the "tubes", reconnected, all sorted. Started first time.
We had the same problem with a similar car. The connector that goes into the ECU has a myriad (maybe 25-30) tiny wires and pin connectors. One was damaged slightly. You could wiggle the plug and it would start up. I bought a piece of loom from a car being broken and had it spliced in. I also changed the ECU along with the clocks/keys etc. The other problem with the petrol 500X is that you can’t get a clutch. If you ever see one cheap in BCA with a declared clutch issue try getting one first.

Jo, why don’t you just run it for a few weeks….if it plays up as often as you say, it will again. If it doesn’t you could trust it to be fixed and sell it then
Did same on a Mini. But why can't dealers think of this. I once had good advice on egr valve for Astra, just by phoning the Vauxhall parts desk. Some know their stuff, probably knowing what sells in parts dept.

Hi Joe - I am sure that you have looked into it, but generally it is not allowed to discount raffle tickets. Surely in such a situation like this the car could be ''sold on'' to another Channel, always looks a tad weird to me when channels merge, be that just for a short period, reminds me of that episode of Family Guy when Homer Simpson appears.
I watch Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics and a lot of Ivans videos are solving electrical issues main dealers give up on, like yours. It seems you need to have a graduate level understanding of car electrical systems/ use of an oscilloscope to identify these issues, and main dealers cant afford to have someone like that on their staff. My point is, is there someone like Ivan about in your area? cos main dealers are notorious for throwing parts (your money) at these problems without knowing whether it will fix them. Might be worth investigating if a specialist, someone who has a track record exists. A bit like Salvage rebuilds with their key programing specialist who gets them out of fixes with no key cars they buy at auction.

Bit of a buzz?
Joe why dont you raffle the 500x to make most of your loss back? Then at least the winner knows what there getting and they have alot of margin to fix or break etc? @@ShiftingMetal
@@ShiftingMetal ye
Ah good old FIAT (Fix It Again Tomorrow) 😔.
Cut your losses and run. 👍
Made me laugh a few times. Very good video but bloody frustrating for you
My Fiat is doing ok fingers 🤞 crossed good 🤞
I refund 4/5 a year. Almost one twice. Harvey Trent a decent YTer son of Trent Recycling apparently only had one refund. Ever. Felt very guilty hearing only one ever.
Hi Joe - I am sure that you have looked into it, but generally it is not allowed to discount raffle tickets. My experience is that all tickets must be sold at the same price to ensure that it is fair for all participants. I'm sure that the rules vary depending on the type of raffle, but it might be worth checking?
All the raffle sites seem to do it so I'm sure it's fine. At the end of the day, anyone can have a free postal entry 🤷♂️
Hello from Ireland again, Joe. I know what to do. Send it over to me, Joe lol. It's been parked up for ages, there's Moss all over it lol. Perfect car for me, Joe. 🙏🙏👌👏👏👏👏👏
Paddy will take it 😂😂 sell it 2 him
@Tommytucker1216 . Dalm right, Tommy, lol. All day long bro 😀😅😂😂
Wow I'm Irish and that is really offensive tbh @liamegan4303 do u want to get up of your knees ...
@@liamegan4303u happy with being called paddy ...get up off your knees man ..your an embarrassment
dry joints on ecu main connector pins
Normally I charge about 600 for tighten up fuse box on them 🤣
Joe my friend you have so much suffered for your art with this car, i so hope you do not park it up in a lay bye and it catches fire.
Chris.
Even the squirrel ran away from it
Great video should fiat not take some of the pain re cost wise 😊
FIAT=Fix It Again Tony!!!
Get rid of all them tyres too Joe, looking like a scrapyard🤪
Brilliant joe🎉
Keep taking the medicine Joe you will get there one day..
One tyre in front of the next...😆.
Is it Italian or Polish? My experiences with Fiat: 1) Enjoy for life or 2) Run away from it asap. 🤣for the 666-joke!
@shiftingmetal How much are you looking for the fiat I'd buy it if it was at the right price ?
Surely in such a situation like this the car could be ''sold on'' to another Channel, always looks a tad weird to me when channels merge, be that just for a short period, reminds me of that episode of Family Guy when Homer Simpson appears.
Thats the car game. You win some you lose some.
If the auto electrician fixed it by uplugging and plugging back in the ECU it suggests a bad connection and why it's intermittent.
Chop's will love that Fiat.
As they say joe.fiat stands for* fix it again tradie..*
1800 Mug :) Excellent channel, keep it up !
Nice piece of stock for James??
I had a really nice insignia did exactly the same
FIAT didn't you know it stands for Fix it Again Tony , that was engineer at Fiat factory told me that.
7 months at the dealer ! What would they done if they had sold it ? Given them a courtesy car for that time ! I doubt it 😅
Diagnose dans the man , he'd sort it but unfortunately he's out of the country at the moment ! 😅😅😅
In those famous words, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” 😂 but seriously I would for £10.00 and you can stipulate no warranty.
You just missed bonfire night.👍👍👍👍👍
I may be interested in buying it would it be possible to have it delivered to Rampton?.
Should have contacted Dips onn Chris Slix car channel, very clever guy ,it wouldn't have cost you that much , maybe keep his number for future reference.
What motor? Diesel, 1.6 or the 1.4 multiair turbo?
If engine stop again , then cold be a Disel in the tank.
Had one as a hire car for about 3 days. Not the best experience.
