Nice Joe. More videos like this are needed. 👍The whole insurance industry needs ripping up and restarting. So many category cars out there needlessly. Someone hit my car unattended. The perpetrator was seen, so I reported the incident as police were called and gave their insurance details to my company. I clipped the bumper back and polished out a couple of low speed marks. I had mended the damage. Zero cost. 30 minutes. I had calls from a flat bed carrier saying he was coming to collect my car, calls from 2 body shops, and 1 hire car company. That’s even prior to them assessing and over charging for new parts. Totally unnecessary and no wonder so many cars are categorised. It must stop as we all pay. 🤬
this was on a tv program why our insurance is high
Just gone through the same thing with my wife's car. They wrote it off based on my pictures alone (no inspection as in the old days!) Valued it at full retail - I am a dealer and I fixed it for less than £500 with used parts (Silverlake by coincidence) The car is now worth £1500 less than it was due to Cat N but we still came away with £3,300 free money even allowing for that and the repair. I also had calls from people wanting to 'force' a hire car on me and another who wanted to push for personal injury - the car was parked with nobody in it. She said abruptly 'Goodbye'. It's as you say, the associated costs and not the damage itself. I think the emergence of these accident assistance agencies are the ones responsible for a USA style money grab. Just saying....
But new parts it would be triple the cost so it would be more like £1500 to fix it for the insurance company
I spent 30 years in recruitment and some of my best clients got took over and they would only deal with national agencies after that. London to London. They paid stupid prices for poor service. Same as in the car industry. The more they try and streamline the process, the more it seems to cost for poorer service.
i had a E-class Merc as a company car which was 6 months old when someone pulled out in front of me when i was doing about 40mph . I Tee Boned the other car and all the airbags in my car deployed, fortunately no one was injured. My E- Class was deemed repairable and it went off to the body shop where it sat for nearly 9 months waiting for 4 seat belt tensioners that needed to be replaced if the car was in an accident. The insurance company provided me with a like for like E-class replacement hire car whilst i was waiting for my car to be repaired /returned at a hire cost of nearly £20K
My friend's car had a VERY minor bump from the other party in a carpark. Bodyshop quote was about £500 and 2 days. Other party didn't want to pay that much, so it went through the insurers. The car ended up being away for 3 weeks, and the like-for-like courtesy car was charged to the other party's insurer at £190 per DAY...
Joe , I'll give you an example . I have an Iveco Daily self build camper in the UK , 2009 , I hold B C D E licence and mileage limit of 10 thousand per year , insurance costs 1400 per year fully comp full NCD , higher premium because I drive a truck so because I drive a lot for work according to british insurers I'm statistically a higher risk...I have a 3..0 litre BMW sedan in Holland , also full NCD and fully comp insurance , guaranteed value of 80,000 euros and I pay 140 euros a year with a big discount because I'm a professional HGV and Bus driver......go figure
Hi guys
I’m new subscriber from cork in ireland , ex pat from uk love your videos very informative. Pity I think your cars look good and at least with berrow motors you can see you do care about the vehicle you sell as a lot of dealers you don’t get see if it is fixed or masked up to get rid off . Keep up the good work there is a growing people here in cork watching your show .
Great video Joe and repair, I bet it wouldnt of been much more for Brad to have got those gaps right. unfortunately these "Approved bodyshop schemes" are one big scams and bodyshops have been making masses of money off them, pushing insurance prices up and now insurance companies are repping the reward of no competition between bodyshops. years ago it used be to your insurance company would says 3 to 5 quotes for the work and for the hire car too. even the Hire car companies are "approved" these days, no compition again
*wouldn't HAVE, not "OF". Basic grammar. 🤣
@@raybeer5213I do hope none of your children have learning difficuties, although with a father like you im sure you correct them, like you have me. Thanks have a good day.

The car insurance industry and particularly repairs need to be looked into. Lots of cars being written off when they could be repaired. Also the environmental impact in many of these cars being scrapped. Overall it's us the public who have to bear the brunt through higher insurance premiums.
We had a door mirror knocked off on one of our cabs…The insurance company wanted to drop off a replacement cab and take ours away on a low loader to be repaired..It’s a door mirror!!..It’s a money making thing within a another money-making thing
they do it to charge the other company like £100 a day hire on purpose and they most likely get it for £20 a day and not just that im not being funny if someone smashed my wing mirror and drove off i just buy another rather then my insurance rise
Insurance is always interesting. Most of the time they don't want to pay out. What always gets me is the approved repair places they chose. A mate had a Vauxhall and it went to a Ford dealership. He had to get the insurance ombudsman involved because it was a bad repair and his insurance company told him he wasn't insured for a re repair. He won that one.
I had a like for like policy on a 7 seater and the insurance company sent me a £0 bill on the hire car. Then, weeks later they sent me a new agreement to sign which showed a rental of nearly £2000. I refused to sign it. Did an internet search and found out why. Insurance companies don't like paying for the hire cars. A guy with a Porsche had a like for like policy and it took weeks for a part to come. The hire cost was over £20K. So, I can understand it to a degree, but they've done it to themselves by only using approved repair and approved lease.
Keep up the good work. Love the vids.
3 months I spent in a courtesy car and when they finally repaired it I was not satisifed with the repair due to bad panel gaps, headlight that was point insanely low and worst of all the coolant resovior was snapped in one place it is held in by two bolts they tried to hide this by supergluing it but obviously as soon as the car warmed up the bad repair melted away. It took them another 4 weeks to fix it whilst I had another courtesy car. I had to threaten to use my car to block off their entrance to get them to give me a courtesy car.
@@gravemind6536 I remember buying a second hand car that was supposed to have 2 keys but one set never seemed to turn up. Left an answerphone message explaining that I was returning the car to the front door of the showroom and then going to lock it up and block them out. Within 2 hours they told me the second set would be with me the following day....Hmmm. Luckily for them it did turn up the next day. Never had to test them for warranty as the car was a Nissan and ran like magic for 2 years.
I had a 2021 Yaris that was wrote off after a deer strike at 50mph. Out of the £19.7k I paid for the car, I was left with a £1200 payout. I was denied any repairs and the insurer sent it to auction - CoPart. I checked last week, out of curiosity, the car's back on the road! I was left with an insurance cost that went from £470 p/y, to £2.2k p/y!!!
Yep thats coparts business model
Copart robbed me last week sold me a van with a bad Dpf!!
@@SeanF-m4b No surprise then.
Thanks for sharing that Joe! Very interesting and good to know. Have a great weekend. 👍🏻
As you said at the beginning, it is often the hidden costs that dictate if a vehicle is 'written off' and therefore control insurance premiums. The policy for our main car includes everything, but for my 'fishing van' I've cut the policy back to basics, no frills just repair, which reduced the premium significantly. However, I the case of this vehicle, I would have been happy to cut cost further by accepting recycled parts for any repair if that had been an option.
Don't assume that the insurance repair would have been better.
My wife and I have both been driving for about 50 years and between us we have had 7 occasions where we have need to have car body repairs, it is always inconvenient despite having a courtesy car and it always seems to take weeks or months rather than days. Four of the repairs have needed remedial action to put right poor quality work.
The worst experience was a few years ago when I had a one month old lease car rear ended. It was repaired by an insurance recommended body shop owned by a large retail group. When I went to collect the car both the upper and the separate fold down parts of the hatchback were misaligned, there were ripples in the roof and side panels and parts that should have been replaced were filled and not properly shaped or sanded. The drivers seat had collapsed in the accident, they had screwed the backrest into a fixed position and there were numerous pieces of misfitted and broken trim. I rejected the car.
A couple of months later the car looked a lot better, I reluctantly accepted it only to wear through a set of Michelins in less than three thousand miles. The body shop denied responsibility so I got a second opinion by having a 4 wheel check done at another garage, this showed that the tracking was massively out of alignment.
I informed my insurer of this and they spoke with the body shop who reported that they had done full checks and they had the computer records to show that that these had been AOK. When asked to provide copies of the records they were unable to do so. The car went away again for another couple of weeks.
The best experience was unexpected, someone had keyed all the panels on one side of my car and my insurance company, RSA, offered a repair to be carried out at my house as an alternative to a body shop repair. A very pleasant person arrived in a large and well equipped panel van one morning, he inflated a tent on my driveway and commenced repairing the car inside it whilst I worked from home. A few hours later the car was perfectly repaired. Sorted!
We had a similar experience with my partner's car which was hit whilst parked, The damage was much lighter than that on your mum's car - smashed rear screen and damage to the tailgate and the plastic bumper. There was no structural damage but the bodyshop quoted over £5k to repair (car's value was about the same). So they wrote it off as a Cat N and we bought the car back which gave her about £3500 in her pocket. I purchased a used tailgate in colour from ebay for £250 and £30 for a crash bar. I repaired a crack in the bumper and resprayed it. Total cost was under £300!! It makes no sense to me but needless to say my partner was very happy with the left over cash!
Hi Joe, thanks for the interesting video.
I think insurance companies will get their money back by hook or by crook! My son was in his car stationary at a roundabout and was rear ended. The car was duly wrote off and he was paid out by the other person's insurance.
He was in no way to blame but when he went to reinsure his new car (which was a lower insurance grouping) his premium had doubled. One of the questions people are asked is "Have you been involved in any accidents in the last 5 years" Then they ask was it your fault or the third party at fault. This information is fed into the insurance number crunching algorithm and you are duly caned whether you are at fault or not.
Years ago cars were repaired and if you was not at fault your insurance premium did not go up. What is the point of protecting your no claims bonus?? They will get their money back whatever you do, whether you are to blame or not.
Result ! money in the bank and perfectly good car for you Mum to use again.
I would be tempted to buy some new boot hinges / give the boot a yank towards the passenger side.
Always have salvage retention on your insurance and ask for the car to be recovered to your home address not a "recovery yard" which often means co part. So then its in your possession whilst you deal with insurance and what the next step will be
Well said, if you want to keep the car don’t let it go to a yard out of your site, but easier to do this obviously if it’s still drivable.
I had a fault claim and I wanted to keep an older car (06 Zafira) for sentimental reasons.
From my understanding in the event of a fault claim the insurance company trys to claim ownership and have a "deal" with copart to give them the salvage!
If you protest they udually claim your vehicle needs to go for an "estimate" and heypresto a copart lorry will turn up!
It took me ages to argue for my salvage even to the point I was put through to a copart "engineer" by my insurance company!
I hadn't even been given a salvage value or repair estimate in the whole process!
Bewarned, its worth reading the small print or asking at renewal whether you can choose to retain salvage in a fault claim!!!
For the benefit of everyone else on here (so we can avoid the company), would you mind staing who your insurer was?
@FatHead1979 Im not soE SURE I can help you with that! If you get my drift? 😉
Obviously they don't try to claim ownership but they're the owner of the vehicles insurance and government.
1st V5C Clearly say on it it's not proof of ownership
2nd that famous insurance /Copart / government scam salvage deal forced us if the vehicle goes for salvage we have only the option to transfer the V5C to the salvage company as clear and Loud is explained on Gov.UK online writing of service and not the registered ceper on the V5C is the one can diside if the vehicle return on the road but the scamers insurance and Copart
3rdOnly way to be the true owner of the vehicle is to request the VEHICLE owner documents from D.V.S.A.
4th and Last we are registered keepers have to pay anything comes back like speeding tickets etc if we don't inform D.V.S.A. were not & to Copart selling lots of vehicles without v5c for good money because dodgy people scam the system that way avoid speeding tickets etc that way soo be sure removing yourself from a salvage vehicle record to save the hassle of receiving tickets etc
Those gaps would annoy me once I noticed them
Can’t miss the gaps tbf, shocking repair 😮
Get a life
As it would me BUT as cleaerly stated in the video, Joe's mum didn't want to spend the money on getting it 'mint'. What do you expect the bodyshop to do, put 100s of quids worth of extra time into it, knwoing the customer isn't going to pay for the extra work? 🤦
@@FatHead1979 as I said, shocking repair!
@@FatHead1979 I just said they’d annoy me. Joes mum can live with whatever she wants.
Congrats on 90k subs Joe. Id not be happy with it fixed like that but can totally understand many folk would be, such a huge saving it makes sense if you don’t bother about cars to have it done like that. That Cayenne damage was so minimal such a shame it was a cat S. Got my tickets as I would love it.
What a wonderful son you are Jo, just make sure your Mum fills up the coffee pods for free!!. A very interesting watch -makes a change from the normal stuff -but please keep the Normal flowing, wish we had a son like you!!! our son's company makes forklifts so a fat lot of use he has turned out to be!!!!
Love watching the blogs with other dealers. Alan B
Good job, and if your Mums happy thats all that matters. You know if they had not bought it back, someone would have, and still be back on the road.
Many years ago I had an Austin Maxi, it went down a steep hill about 30 feet into a tree, eitherside of the tree and there was a drop of about 400 feet, I had to get a tow truck out with a crane to get it back onto the road, it started up and I drove it home, I bought a second hand bumper and bonnet, had a bit if straightening done and fitted the parts myself, the cost of fixing it was less than the tow truck and total cost about $400. More recently I bought a low mileage Golf for $1500 which was straight but had a few problems and the car yard were going to write it off, the paint on the bonnet and roof was rough, I paid someone to do that, $1000, the electrical problems doors not locking and pasenger adjustable mirror with a mind of its own, INstead of replacing the wiring in both doors I simply soldered in a few wires, a bit fidly but it worked well and we drove the car for several years before trading it in.
Great job, got mum's car back, a car she presumably happy and comfortable with and that can only be good.
Amazing how these insurance companies can basically throw a car AND money away like that, and as you say no wonder car insurance is so costly now!
My mate has a disco 5 commercial. Side swiped by a car in a car park, did two doors. Very tidy car, written off.
He bought it back, bought two doors same colour and you wouldn't know any difference. So wrong that it's just thrown away
it would not be writen off for good copart would have auctioned it off.
@michaelthompson6885 I realise that. But no where near the pay out value. And also then the customer has the hassle of finding a replacement. Where as if the insurance just allows used parts. Repairs it. Everyone is a winner
A good cheap job, well done, always pays to make mum happy.
I think a lot of the problems is down to them pressing larger panels to avoid so many joins. It's quicker in construction but more involved in repairing accidental damage.
Bodyshops cut panels to the smallest practical size they can fit easiest .
When the garage done the quote for insurance they would of had to price in for a new genuine quarter panel and genuine bumper along with new brackets, screws and even speed clips etc , plus as you said the hire car time etc and then the storage of the car prior to the insurance paying out and the car being collected
would have had
Seen one video on RUclips were a bloke had his Jag XF written off for a broken OSR tail light and a big dent in the rear bumper.... Kettle of boiling water and the dent pushed out and £30 for a light off eBay and car was sorted .... He walked away with over £1,000 in his pocket ....
Car was written off as tail lights not in stock and on back order and the potential storage costs and car hire costs for several weeks made it uneconomical
And people wonder why their insurance premiums are rocketing up every year
We are paying for this
The hire car I was provided with through my insurance company for a no fault accident was charged at £400 per day to the other party. I could have hired the same car from avis for £100 per day.
That is how "no fault" companies make money.
@@jimmybob3756yep it’s called zero regulation and zero accountability. Insurance companies been taking the proverbial for years. Send those dented cars to Matt Armstrong, he knows a thing or two about fixing bent cars.
Per day? Madness isn't it?
Insurance has been a protected money making racket for a long time now.
Absolutely - I've heard this many times - insurance companies offload the support to accident management companies, who are in cahoots with hire car companies and/or charge hugely inflated prices for car hire. A friend who was in a no fault accident was offerd the accident management service, but the guilty party's insurance - Admiral, offered to take over the claim and provide all support. They've obviously learnt that its a lot cheaper to do it in house!
Nicely done mate, well done, its crazy to think how much insurers pay out for cars and how much you can do the repairs for, definitely think they go over top
Insurance is so high because insurance companies would rather pay out than repair damaged cars, your mums insurance will probably double on renewal
excellent report. just shows the waste we have to accept .
A different, little gem, illuminating video. Deserves a place in your future "Best of Joe"" video collection.
So glad your mum got a tidy car back and a tidy lump of money aswell.
Shut lines don't matter too much as it would be sold as a Cat S anyways...
However personally it would mess with my OCD 😂
TY for sharing fella
It's a fair enough repair, at least there was no structural damage and your mother will be able to enjoy her car again and she's holding folding, which is always a bonus....
Used your code for a report on my new car!!! Great score sand all good on mot and the rest thanks dean b
For paint always get quote from the dealer paint shop. BMW own repair shop did a bumper full paint on loose bumper for £100, which i though was good.
Loved this video Joe thanks will top up my cayenne tickets now that’s a proper machine
You’ve totally done the right thing with the repair.
over 90k, getting nearer mate, keep going.
Insurance companies used to be run by professionals now they are run by deranged bean counters; we now seem to be getting into the finance game !
Had the insurance fixed it then it would have been around 6 weeks off the road. Hire car for that amount of time alone would be more than half the cars value so it was written off.
Plus of course original or insurance approved parts have to be used and anything with a mark on it gets replaced.
Interestingly though, the Corsa looks like an ex driving school car. Reason being it has the spare wheel well fitted which is an extra from a factory order. Driving school cars must have a spare wheel by regulation. But, this of course increases the rear panel if needed as there aren’t any pattern parts for those.
End of the day you got a good deal, car back fixed, but I would have preferred it right, wait until it rains, plus money too.
Great video. Looking forward to BM weekly after my Saturday shift laying bricks tomorrow
This is has kinda always been the case, worsened by post covid inflation & workshops being backed up. But a more key point most people ignore are new regulations the last govt brought in, meaning Insurers now have to give existing customers same price they give new customers. Good for those who never switched/or shopped around, but it shafts everyone else as now all insurers post 2022 have simply raised their base prices & don't offer lucrative deals to new customers. Good intentions, you can see why it made sense on paper...but in reality all premiums rose. This is the biggest change/impact that I've heard from several mates who work across insurance.
The gaps will be an issue when they come to sell it on, but I guess it can just go to auction.
Another good video. Nice you can look after your Mum this way.
Ahhhh - That VERY Exaggerated World they call . . . . . . . Insurance!
Thanks again fella
thats nice of the Porsche owner to forward everything, they do seem to be owned by enthusiasts rather than idiots
I got a rear quarter put on a vauxhall corsa 2 months ago. It cost me £800 labour and £100 for the panel
I had a merc valued at £10k
They wrote it off for 2 cracked wheels, windscreen, and an arm on the nsf
Their reason was that the suspension may be damaged and they didn't want to repair the wheels and arm to find that the suspension was damaged.
Ironically, I was just about to put up for sale fo £9k, so I'm actually in pocket
They estimated it to cost £9600 😂😂😂😂 where they got that figure from I'll never know.
Annoyingly, damage was caused by a pothole
Great segment !!!
I kissed the back of a lorry in my Land Rover Lightweight (the brakes were legal but still awful). Over twenty years old and the insurance repaired it. A new wing, new headlight and the bumper was bent back with the help of a giant set of grips and part scaffolding pole. To keep in the style with the rest of the car it was brush painted. I was super happy and quite surprised. Being ex military it had several coats of NATO green paint slapped on it so anything better than a bog brush to paint the new panel would have looked stupid. Not sure what insurance companies would do now. This was just post 2000.
Thanks for the video and a very good deal for your mother
Great little video that Joe. Small dinged cars would still sell well too if they were cheap. More Chops customers than yours though I’d guess. Or go full Dave and add spoilers and splitters for the Weston’s boys
Interesting video Joe some people like there cars so I would imagine some like me would want it right specially after paying the premiums we pay
amazed boot opens, my fiesta the only visible damage after rammed twice few scratches, but i guess pushed in to car ahead and push that what did the damage, twisted the frame the boot i nearly broke key unlocking it and once it opened it never latch afterwards no matter how hard i shut it even bumper access bit fell out i closed boot so hard. insurance taken it away bent frame, but i paid £1900 for it i got about that back but took me 5 years to get the excess £400 back so i lost nothing on the car for what i paid and that is rare on 12 year old car. sneaky thing was insurance did not tell me i have no more cover and took it out next day one last blast around the block as min visible damage went past cop at very high rpm leaving a junction and thank fully i did not get pulled over so was sure a bit sneaky of them. overall at the end 5 years the case finally close with a good outcome what normally not the case with insurance
Just booked in my Berlingo to my local body shop after being bumped in France, this is typical, my insurance would almost certainly write it off
the problem is that the insurance repairers wont/cant re use damaged panels so they would be pricing to unpick the quarter panel and fit a new one. they will use insurance approved pattern parts now so could have done a pattern bumper. and then two weeks or more in a credit hire car and that is where your money goes. and where we would happily have used parts fitted they cant use them so have to have new
It’s a good cost effective repair. What’s not to like. 👍
It's always worth trying to get a cash settlement & keep the car after a bump. I always found it best to take my damaged car, caused by a 3rd party, to the 3 most expensive repairers for quotes. That way I would end up being given the best possible payout, and ended up doing any not too difficult repairs myself.
With your mums car though, it would have been worth paying the extra to get it right, as it really does stand out. That was always going to be a cat S with a crunched rear quarter like that.
Enjoyed this, very enlightening thankyou 👍
It’ll be a cat s as it’s structural damage but an easy repair. Will need a jig which if you’re in the trade will be about 3-400, repair and paint rear quarter 300, rear bumper 2nd hand 150, bar 50. Plus 200 to paint bumper if can’t get one in colour. A grand tops.
As stated Insurance repairs require OEM Parts (Which may be on back order for Wks/Mths with daily cost often of a courtesy car) with Paint at Their "Selected Repair Shops . The cost can ramp up real quick given those circumstances. This plus the increase in Crash for Cash Scams etc is what has driven My Insurance up by 59% since last year with no claims made by me.
There is also the fact that the Reqr Qtr Panel is not a bolt on part and to be repaired properly would require a whole new panel with all the Spot Welds etc, also the join with the roof may be under the roof skin too adding more complexity. CAT S for a Cat N in My opinion.
My daughter hit a deer on way to work in her 2016 suzuki swift. Bumper grille small dent in bonnet headlight ns wing and crash bar was the damage I could see no leaks or engine damage and drove fine no warning lights. Recovered to insurance repairer who immediately wrote it off they also said tgat ac condenser and some wiring was damaged. It was then reassessed by copart who said it was indeed a cat s and said payout would be £5083 less excess. Sheltered to negotiate twice for a better price bur they wouldn't budge. I saw a 2nd hand whole front end for a swift on ebay for £1400 bit would need paint etc. Do we just cut losses and accept payout or buyback and repair? By the way as repairer said they wouldn't repair she was without a car so we had to lend her one of ours
Same thing happened to wife's car. The other party was at fault light paint damage to rear quarter and slight ripple on rear door after I cleaned it you could barely see it. insurance company gave us a courtesy car for 3 days costing them £450 then wrote her Astra off as a cat n and paid us £4400 It's not even having repair work on it as it is so light, probably worth25% less as a cat n but as we always run our cars into the ground we're on to a winner. Had a nice fortnight in Spain courtesy of Admiral insurance 😎
The arch line to the bumper isnt the best. But as a cheap cat s repair its right enough
I had a ford galaxy that was hit as a past by so it was the light and a dented panel. I originally but the car for about £750 at the time due to having some wiring issues that affected the rear door locks and electric windows on the back to, I got the car which was a 1.9 diesel automatic. I loved the drive and the mph which was around 39mpg all round. Because of the damage they wrote it off and gave me the car for free. I got £2250 back to, I regret it now as I hated the replacement I got but I reckon I could have bashed the dent out with a rubber hammer and bought a light and it would have been simple. But I sold the car in the crashed state for £800 on eBay, so after everything I got just over 3 grand, the car had no cat category. I think they can’t really be bothered by having to get a body shop involved so just did that. As I said mine did not have a category my worry is someone who has a cat s model which has been fixed to a lower condition that’s safe to use on the road and for maybe bought by someone who doesn’t use car insurance checks as you did so potentially there could be hundreds of cars that are on the road that could be very dangerous especially if a new driver is not aware because the car could fold up a lot easier if the repair was not properly done. My thoughts I guess and sorry for the bed time story I wrote as I could imagine many people fall asleep reading this 👍
My IS200 sport was written off when all it needed was a rear bumper and the tiniest jig to get a rear door gap back new parts still available from Lexus,
You don't know how rare a car is till you try to replace it 😢
Someone put it back on the road within a month . . . . Don't use Swift or AXA insurance
Just got my car insurance renewal quote. It’s gone up 73%. Now the insurance company are wondering why I’m not renewing with them 😉😉
My son had a 2012 corsa, he loved that thing, he was on his way home from widnes to Manchester last week, at night in the rain, and wrapped it up, but it's way worse than that, the whole front end is gone. What a shame, awesome little car it was, started on the key and only had 70k on the clock.
Our 2010 Honda minivan got hit while street parked, fortunately by a city works vehicle, so the drive left a note. Front wing driver door and passenger door were all damaged.
WE did managed to get it fixed at an approved body shop, but it as close to being written off due ot its value.
The annoyance is that through no fault of ours we could have been deprived of our working vehicle, and given a check for about $11,000 - that would not buy a similar replacement.
Great video i would of made the same decision as your mum and kept the wedge👌
Considering what it looked like.they have done a fantastic job for a fraction of the price..
But i do remember jayemm had a story about some mans Porsche that got damaged and the insurance company gave him a hire car which he had for so long that the cost of that outstripped the price of the Porsche.
But i remember years ago i had a cavilier sri .that someone tried to steal by breaking the steering lock .
The insurance company wrote it off and gave me £300 for it i brought it back for £50 and it cost me £25 to repair it .
Some insurance companies now say that they may do repairs with used parts. If they do then it shouldn't cost much more than it cost you, although if they all tried that all of the time it's likely there would not be enough parts to go round and almost certainly it would drive used parts prices up.
As Mat Armstrong would say the gaps are very bad🤦
Repair looks pretty good.
Good job for the money, insurance would have insisted on new quarter new rear panel, probably new tailgate, that's why it's so expensive to repair,it's all a cone really, but at least the body shop got the work, mum had money left over and still has her car so won't win situation.
Of course writing off cheap running petrol or even diesel cars has nothing to do with wanting to get everyone over to electric. It's just a theory mind but ever since the electric car sales have gathered momentum there's more and more instances of I.C.E cars being written off for very minimal damage. I may be wrong.
Is there a way of checking if a car has actually been written off. I know someone who was told by their insurance company that their car was a write off (from photographs). They were told it had to be crushed, and couldn't be returned to the road.
It went to copart. Strangely months later the person gets a call from copart to arrange collection of the car, even though it had been collected by themselves nearly a year before. They said the insurance company had instructed them.
The person who owned the car logged into their insurer, and it now says that they are going to repair the car, and gives the name of a garage. But the insurer paid up nearly a year before.
The car owner definitely wanted the car repaired, not scrapped.
So how do they definately find out that the car was crushed, and off the road?
Hello from Ireland again, Joe. That looks like a car that could be sent over to me in Ireland. That wouldn't be that expensive to fix, lovely green Mini Cooper, that you sneaked onto the Yard lol. We never saw you buying this one, Anyway, nice Corsa, Joe. I do hope you're Mum wasn't hurt in any way. Bless her. Wow, first class fix. Any normal guy looking at that Boot wouldn't even see that Gap. Insurance Companies just take the bloody piss. Dont get me started, lol. Thanks, Joe, i hope you're Mum takes a little holiday with that spare cash 💸 . Good on you for sorting it out. Respect 🙏 🙏👌👏👏👏👏👏👏
that corsa still got a big gap on the rear boot but i would check to see if any water might be getting in when it rains if it does i would get it sorted because my old picanto had a bump and it allowed water but i used jb weld to cover the seems that it allowed water
almost 2yrs back, i bought a 2020 (70) peugeot 208 that had been written off. for two front wings and a headlight. it's amazing what they write a car off these days. think the previous guy tried to squeeze through a gap that was too narrow?
Real eye opener that,I suspect more people will be having their write-offs back, and getting them back on the road with a bit of extra cash in the bank.obviously not all category s vehicles will be as easily repairable.
That motor has been fannied up and bam we have a video
Boot hinges will just be slightly bent. Open the boot and give it a good few yanks towards drivers side, job done🤣
Our car got written off for 2 scratched doors. Got paid out £8500. Boight 2 doors in colour for £300 and she’s back to looking as was before. And then, even if it wasn’t our fault, the insurance almost doubled. Their excuse was that if the car has been in accident then it’s more likely to be involved in another one. Biggest load of 💩 I’ve ever heard. Cancelled insurance and went with different insurer.
it may have passed an MOT but did you do a 4 wheel alignment on it? or is it going to wear tyres unevenly?
What watch does he wear. Keep pausing it to look. Too blury. I like it. 😊
Makes total sense to repair.rip off insurance company's.that's why we get charged so much.Bit of a gap on that boot !
Excellent video and info 👍
You Defiantly. Went down the right road. One this one. Mum will be happy. Unless you talk her into changing it. 🤷♂🤷♂
Got someone I know crunched their 8 month old Range Rover into a supermarket car park concrete pillar and they are having to wait about 3 months for parts on back order.
It’s a write off because 1/3 of that car needs new panels lol. Insurance have to use new parts to replace damaged ones, they cannot bodge job it by pulling out dents etc because if it crashed again and the person died in the accident because of structural problems in the car they are liable. They would only repair that up to like £4000 as that car is probably worth £8000 max. Mat Armstrong fixed an Urus with no front end, so anything can be fixed but not when a multi million pound company is liable
It's the body shops that are insurance approved license to print money
Saw a lady driving around, doing her school run, in a Mazda 3.
She has very similar rear damage, all stoved in on the corner like this Corsa.
But hers was far worse, with sharp edges!
Think she's asking to get pulled over by Mr Plod!
You know Joe,I went to buy tickets found it that difficult I gave up. On a positive note I did find out you used to be a plumber like myself. I can see why you gave up, you would have a hard time getting in some cupboards, LOL. 🙂
My granddaughter had a similar accident , I told her mother, my daughter to cancel the claim and just keep the car, a friend had a scrap car he swapped the parts over and charged £600. Doing this meant the car wasn’t labelled.
Does having the Cat N or S category have any significant effect on future insurance premiums?
I've always been put off buying repaired cars in case it turns out to be a false economy.
Well done Joe
No doubt write off way too easy but people make a living from the fact they do. I got a little A3 S Line half price as broken headlight, wing and bumper dent. Would have been £750 bumper, £800 adaptive LED headlight. £220 Wing, paint like £1500. Prob more to blend properly into door and bonnet. Prob £5k making over with the wait for the parts and courtesy car not viable. Cost £80 for a repop wing, bumper bit of heat and time, headlight transferred ballasts got used of eBay for £220. Painted myself looks fine, not a booth pro but £50 paint not £1500. Plus enjoyed doing and sense of achievement when was finished. I wouldn't do a CAT S on a home driveway but an N just cosmetic and crazy a lovely car can get binned for such minor damage.
