These individuals knowingly in my opinion, based on that 'throw him a bone', defrauded James with false representation - very specific contexts to use that phrase in. Their friends, family and acquaintances would be immediate red flags moving forwards. James problem, he couldn't prove it, but I also suggest, nor could they so it was always James prerogative. Maybe a sheet of check-boxes or something like that you could tick with the different deals you offer James, easy mass print out, goes in with every deal you do.

I have been driving for 50 years and have owned 30 cars. I have never experienced anything anywhere near the service you give in that time. So be proud and hold your head up high!
Having reached the ripe old age of 67, the one thing I have learned is that if you are nice to people in shops & restaurants you get more out of them than if you rant at them…
Likewise, I find that most people will go out of their way to help if they are treated with a bit of respect. I've had a building society agent ask me to hold, near the end of a call to them to sort out a little hicup at their end, and then return to say that she had an apology/goodwill amount authorised and £50 will be credited to my account. I had never expected not asked for this, only queried the somewat consufing message in a letter.

Off subject but I visited North Cornwall from South Wales last month to Port Isaac, first time ever, all I can say is what a beautiful part of the country you live in, was a long drive in one day down and back home 180 miles each way but it was well worth it and I will be visiting again.
Gosh mate, rough for you, tbh no one like that is getting any joy out of me after 5 mths. Best way on retail cars bud is full mot, then mot failures are a year down the line. I think if you'd just told them to buzz off at the start, they'd have just shrugged and jogged on, you do keep digging holes for yourself mate, but your a really nice guy so that's how it is.

I worked as a self employed joiner round peoples homes on various jobs for decades. So, dealing with the public, I know what you are going through. Once I realised that people are not all the same and dont necessarily have rationality things were a lot easier. Dealing with the public you come across all types, from the overly reasonable to the absolute nutters. It can be like care in the community sometimes, even though I tried very hard to keep every customer happy. You have my sympathies but this customer is way past trying it on…..

My family was in the motor trade for decades and the worst buyers were the ones shopping for older cheaper vehicles. They always have unrealistic expectations about their vehicle. They think a vehicle with 100,000 Mi on it and 10 years old should be in a condition comparable to one sitting in a dealer showroom. The most memorable customer our dealership had was a woman who bought a Vauxhall Nova. She paid £650.00 if I recall and she was informed that the release cable for the bonnet was broken and it was on order and was due within the next week. She insisted on taking the vehicle and when the part came in we tried to get in contact with her to have it installed but we didn't hear from her for almost 2 years when she called saying that the engine was seized because it had run out of oil and it was our fault because they couldn't get the bonnet open to check or add oil!
Time to get out of the bargain basement market Chops, stay 10k plus, and get a few choice motorbikes in too, widens your market that way, take it on the chin mate, most people in Devon appreciate what you do 👍

Some people are just scumbags, always have been always will be. I was self employed roofer for 40 years and came across these losers all the time, always made sure my builder mates knew who they were.
Some people really do take the biscuit. We have to deal with them some of the time in our business too. We pride ourselves in our customer service as well, but I do keep notes and if someone comes back again, I'll be ready for them next time.

Usually rude and loud behaviour is an attempt to gain control - you’re a fair and thorough man from what I’ve seen so I would say your view on this is absolutely correct. Don’t dwell on it too long.
James as with my previous advice. Buy yourself a Purdy and give them both barrels( buckshot is the best if they are close enough together you should be able to get both buggers for about £1.35-2 cartridges). You have plenty of spare land on your property-just make sure the dog does not dig them up. And as a bonus you can sell the car again from a deceased estate. WIN WIN??? They always have unrealistic expectations about their vehicle.
They think a vehicle with 100,000 Mi on it and 10 years old should be in a condition comparable to one sitting in a dealer showroom.
The most memorable customer our dealership had was a woman who bought a Vauxhall Nova.
She paid £650.00 if I recall and she was informed that the release cable for the bonnet was broken and it was on order and was due within the next week.
She insisted on taking the vehicle and when the part came in we tried to get in contact with her to have it installed but we didn't hear from her for almost 2 years when she called saying that the engine was seized because it had run out of oil and it was our fault because they couldn't get the bonnet open to check or add oil!

Some people are just scumbags, always have been always will be. I was self employed roofer for 40 years and came across these losers all the time, always made sure my builder mates knew who they were.
Some people really do take the biscuit. We have to deal with them some of the time in our business too. We pride ourselves in our customer service as well, but I do keep notes and if someone comes back again, I'll be ready for them next time.

Do not know how you stay calm dealing with people like that , i guess it proves what a nice guy you are , would have liked to hear you tell them to pay the full bill but thats not who you are . Never change , you are a legend .

Tbh you did right to get the welding done, a dodgy trader did time for a rusty yaris that customer had for 5 mths and then took for mot. I do fresh mot on every thing retail bud. Jobs a nightmare.
It doesn’t matter how nice you are or how much you do for people unfortunately there’s always someone that wants more or thinks they can pull the wool over your eyes ! Probably because they know you’re a decent bloke they thought they could take advantage !
I really feel for you. I personally after a 20 year established business got out of the game quite a few years ago now and experineced this behaviour fortunately for.me like yourself very rarely.it does however make you feel helpless and angry at the same time. You offer a great service and most importantly honesty so keep your chin up and move on 👍

Usually rude and loud behaviour is an attempt to gain control - you’re a fair and thorough man from what I’ve seen so I would say your view on this is absolutely correct. Don’t dwell on it too long.

James as with my previous advice. Buy yourself a Purdy and give them both barrels( buckshot is the best if they are close enough together you should be able to get both buggers for about £1.35-2 cartridges). You have plenty of spare land on your property-just make sure the dog does not dig them up. And as a bonus you can sell the car again from a deceased estate. WIN WIN???

Surely if the short mot was an issue you would have just put 12 months on it at the time? People will take advantage of kindness sadly 😔 they sound very disrespectful.
You got to love the cheap people who expect a Porsche on a Hyundai budget. I would refuse to deal with people like that. Yes there are picky people all over but most of the time you can reason with them. Some are just a total loss like this customer. You are just opening yourself to a nightmare customer for the next 2 -3 years. I can almost guarantee you if the transmission fails after 3 years there are going to want a new transmission for free. Next time you get a customer like that just tell them to move on.

Wow the price of the drop link alone would have cost them that for the MOT in a lot of places, how ungrateful can they get, your a decent guy James you put your customers first, the charities you have helped raise thousands for not many do what you do that’s for sure.
