You used to be able to buy a decent runner with a new MOT for £500 a couple of years back. Now you need to spend £1500-2000 to get the same. The prices of new cars going up has also brought up the prices of used ones.

I bought my last and final car because I'm an old fart who is now 64 ... bought new via carwow with a massive discount (thanks carwow) ..
The market is bonkers / upside down .. I've lost very little in depreciation despite my car now being 4 1/2 yrs old BUT the cost to change is massive due to the massive increase in price of new cars
years ago .. new cars lost a fortune as soon as you drove them off the forecourt ..
add EVs .. into the mix .. seems the best thing to do is stick with what you have as long as its reliable irrespective of your position in the market place

labours upcoming budget has killed all big ticket sales for now. Some people may be holding on to existing cars waiting for EV prices to drop a bit more, or scared of committing to a newer ICE car which may devalue rapidly if more restrictions like ULEZ ,many cities are considering emission zones.
These days some older cars can easily last 15 years, and with a bit of help 20 years, and they do not have all the modules and electronics to contend with. I have a 12 year old Fiesta, it will easily make 20 years.

I understand it's pretty quiet everywhere. This time of year usually is - people aren't really interested in hanging around rainy, cold used car lots and are saving for Christmas. But right now there is also a lot of uncertainty and caution about. Not just in cars but just generally. People aren't buying used cars because they want something different - they're buying them because their last one failed it's MOT or died or something along those lines.
One thing I have noticed is that prices are getting sensible now. The crazy jacked-up prices of cars post-COVID are largely a thing of the past although there are some oddities - you don't get the catastrophic 1st year depreciation of French and Italian stuff like you used to.

I recommended a brand new Rio 1.1 diesel to my ex back in 2013, she traded a bright yellow Corsa in for it. The economy and 7 year warranty appealed to her and I hear it's still going strong, sold to a friend who's never had any issues with it. I sorted all kinds of things out for her, rebuilt her lawn mower engine, fixed her crappie broadband wiring, various things, I was even kind to her cat and I hate cats but she suddenly blew me out, saying she thought she fancied me more than I fancied her and wasn't happy about it. I tried to take it as a compliment and move on but I liked driving that car and I did fancy her, I just didn't show it. I never thought in a million years the car would outlast her, but it did, poor lass died of cancer a few years ago. 😢

Says something about the market now when Ford dealers closing down, used to be a franchise for printing money.
Saying that the models sold now are no longer as appealing as they used to be with just suv cars, no fiesta etc.

I've got a 20 year old Rover 75, thought of selling it, but it cost just £100 to MOT so why sell, where am I going to get a nice luxury car when mine is only worth £2k, a lot of people are holding on. My sister the same, 10 year old VW UP, decided to keep it for another 5 years instead of getting something newer. Its going to be a harsh winter for used car dealers, so wish you well but it will be difficult.

Best not to over-think things at the moment. Most of the comments on here ring true if you’re selling cars or cakes!. I think a level of subconscious hysteria sets in & the market self levels later when everyone calms down a bit. The Maserati is cool, look forward to seeing that soon.

I would love to see a garage like yours around here. I went looking at a load of dealers a bit over a year ago looking for a "cheap" older runabout and prices were crazy, and was told it would be £10k+ for anything decent. Ended up getting a 2010 audi a3 tdi for it's cheap tax, decent mpg etc. Paid a bit much for it with 140k on the clock, and it's an s-line model with a few extras.... £6k. Wouldn't budge on price either.
Had various issues with it since I've had it which cost a bit to fix. Clutch slave cylinder went a few months back so ended up getting new clutch, dual mass flywheel and had timing belt done at same time too as had no record of when it was done. Also had to get front tyres for mot so went for all 4.
Recently went to trade it in against another car - now with 147k on the clock, with above work done... and was offered £1,250 trade in. We buy any car offered me a little less too.. that wouldn't even cover the cost of the last bill.
I thought the whole point of buying older cars was depreciation was pretty much done (or very minor) but this is a huge drop..... yet buying around here prices are still high at dealers.
Ended up buying a car privately and still have the audi, which I'm trying to decide what to do with.....

It’s a combination of things I suppose. Chip shortage for new cars, more people buying used, demand outstripping supply of used cars so prices have shot up. People are skint, it’s coming up to Christmas, they’re waiting for the budget to see if Labour will increase fuel duty.
Right now on Autotrader, there are 460,490 cars for sale in the UK. 59,921 private seller and 400,569 trade. Of them, if you put FSH in the keyword search, there’s only 18,986. Then FMDSH there’s only 195. Out half a million.

A commenter said that a Morris Minor cost £600 in 1959. At that time a pint of beer cost one shilling. Today a pint will cost at least £4. So, £600 x 20 = 12000 pints. .....12,000 pints at £4 = £48,000. The new Morris Minor will pŕobably cost much more than that. ,!
Assuming any get made, as yet, apparently they are only pictures being shown. But I dare say there will be a substantial demand, as it is an excellent shaped vehicle. !
