Basically, the main enemy of Qing dinasty during the conflict with Japan is corruption. When beiyang fleet was made it was considered one of the largest fleets in the world with most modern ships from the west. However after years this fleet became really weak, because of poor maintenance, poor training of the crews and sailors, officers were only chosen due to their relation with inner circle of royalty, and many parts and arsenals of the ships were sold out by the corrupt officers while they changed them with lower grade or even fake parts. Even the ships themselves were obsolete and no changing with more modern ones. When the warring time came they were even no match for the Japanese fleet who actually was smaller in term of capacity but with professional officers and highly trained sailors
The Qing went for 東道西技(Eastern system and Western Tech) and basically swayed away from reforming the inherent corruption and obsolesce of their system itself. Funny how this same thing happened to the victor Japan later in the late 20’s and henceforth the pacific war.

I don't know how true this is but when the Qing were arming some of the Imperial Army with Mausers, I've read accounts from the German instructors claiming that the Chinese troops invariably set their rifle-sights to maximum range. This was apparently done in the belief that it made for the most powerful shots the rifle was capable of. Explaining that shifting the sights actually moved the point of aim rather than increased or decreased the power behind each shot was simply disbelieved by the Chinese. Now, this might be pure racist contempt on the part of the Prussians, yet the gross disparity in casualty figures during the Boxer Rebellion a few years later could be partially explained by this factor - if true.
kinda odd, so they pretty much were like Instructor: so you can set your sights to different distances so it's easier to shoot in said distances. Chinese soldier: Got it, The farther I set my sights, the more damage my gun causes. Instructor: no not like tha Chinese soldier: Well I'm off to fight! cya!
Im not very knowledgeable with chinese history but one of the great cause of their loss was the Empress Xu has wasted almost all military budgets for her own luxury goods. So they were out of military budget. 2ndly, the weapons n ships they equipped were fine but they were sticking with the old tactics. So to get it straight into conclusion, Qing was ass kicked by Japan in 1895 April n made a Treaty of Shimonoseki.
Japan and Qing sent troops to suppress the rebellion of Korea. But both of the forces remained in Korea, and which one got Korea developed into the Sino-Japanese War. Qing was worried that "I can not lose like a small Japanese." And it was defeated
There is a 'minor' difference though. The Сhinese troops were actually invited by the Korean gov while the Japanese were not. Japan was just looking for a trouble as per usual.
I've been a history nerd since I was 8 (Bronze Age, WW1, WW2 being my faves) but I can see where some of the inspiration for some of the uniforms in anime like Seraph of the End came from. Lime green stripes, blue uniform, white gloves, the hats, etc. Ha. Makes sense now.

Philosophically, a Chinese against a Japanese is like a giant spider against an army ant: one on one, the ant will probably lose. But a nest full of giant spiders vs a colony of army ants will have a very different outcome: the ants will tear all of the spiders to pieces. The evidence of this is shown in the Sino -Japanese War.
AlphaChocolateTruffle Qing China had the upper hand at beginning in terms of navy power but then the corruption court of the Manchu rulers ruined it all basically. The Qing army was a mess compared to Japanese western style army but they did fought very bravely most of the time. Truth is at that time Japan is a far more advanced and powerful nation than Qing China.
I have no doubt that the Qing Chinese army fought bravely, despite their problems, they weren't cowards. Alas, they were let down big time by their political and military leaders which is often why nations lose wars.

There needs to be a disclaimer in this video since it compiles a lot of videos from film and drama that has nothing to do with the First Sino Japanese War.
A war is invariably determined by the possession of a sophisticated system, encompassing the political environment, financial support, and the ethical values of the populace, rather than being solely reliant on military equipment and weapons. During the Qing era, however, there were no winning elements in this particular instance. Hongzhang Li was acutely aware of this reality, prompting him to eschew military conflict with Japan and instead opt for diplomatic resolution. Nevertheless, he placed excessive reliance on Russia, demonstrating a misjudgment of the situation. His overemphasis on personal relationships as a deciding factor also reflects a significant weakness in Chinese culture, a flaw that can still be observed in contemporary China.
Watching the Qing on battleships is weird. It's like looking at people wearing clothing not out of place in 1700, in a ship that wouldn't look out of place in WW2.
This is the Japanese-Qing War. If this war defined as the Sino-Japanese War. Then this should be the Third Sino-Japanese War. The first occurred in 663 AD and the second occurred in 1592 AD.
Ironically enough, the Sino-Japanese War in 1592 helped to weaken the Ming dynasty that ruled China at the time so it seems that the Japanese had a hand in weakening TWO ruling dynasties in China throughout history.
news bad It was Korea, China under the Ming dynasty help the Korean against Japanese invasion ordered by Toyotomi. 663AD, Korea was unified but rebellions occurred and Japan help them by 27000 troop and sending back a royal hostage to become a puppet ruler. Japan failed.

Japanese people's ancestors were very brave & smart, they could not only fight Qing, but also Russia & British empire. However, now they are nothing but another colony of USA.
While Japan was flourishing India was doing the opposite. I wish Aurangzeb had never applied those rules which disunited India and if the British never ruled then India would have been an amazing country like Japan
Japan did not officially annex Korea until 1910. However, as a result of the Russo-Japanese war, Japan began the process of colonizing Korea in 1905. As for the first Sino-Japanese war, Japan and Qing Dynasty agreed that Korea should be an “independent” country, but in reality, Japan just wanted to increase their influence over the Korean Peninsula, by kicking the Chinese out... Nevertheless, it is certain that this war and the following war marked the beginning of Imperial Japan’s oppression towards the East Asian nations.
Japan did not occupy any nations but expelled Westen Imperialism from East Asian countries, making them independent from the colonization. Which country did Japan colonize?

China naturally had good performance against Japan in hand to hand warfare pre-modern. it was only when Japan modernized their military that China started losing badly. In the Tang and Ming dynasty wars against Japan, their expeditionary forces shocked the Japanese because they always believed the Chinese troops to be inexperienced compared to their samurai veterans. Partly also because China can generally have stronger heavier infantry/cavalry. Ancient China was used to going toe-to-toe with equal sized countries so Japanese invasions were minor to them.
Would you mind enlighten me how aggression towards other countries can protect your own? What would make Japan disappear by not attacking others? I'm curious🤔

Now, this might be pure racist contempt on the part of the Prussians, yet the gross disparity in casualty figures during the Boxer Rebellion a few years later could be partially explained by this factor - if true.

Japan and Qing sent troops to suppress the rebellion of Korea. But both of the forces remained in Korea, and which one got Korea developed into the Sino-Japanese War. Qing was worried that "I can not lose like a small Japanese." And it was defeated

Thank you for providing and introducing the video.
Battle ships like Mikasa appeared at the time of Russo-Japanese war, So this video is not correct. Rather, Japanese fleet were smaller than Sino fleet, and looked like weaker than Sino fleet.
Japanese fleet were able to excuted whole Sino fleet by the tactic that all ships united to the same high speed.
And because the Beiyang Fleet was super corrupt, poorly trained and got abandoned by the Nanyang Fleet.
This video is made by clips combined from many war videos, not just the ones that portraying Sino-Japanese War 1894. Some of them are taken from Russo-Japanese War movie and even the Last Samurai.
Thank you for the correction. The Japanese navy really had no battleships like the 2 german built battleships China had. The Japanese were very worried and the rest of the world all expected them to lose. But to their surprise, the Chinese navy lost because of sheer incompetence and corruption.

Ants are the most successful species in the world.

Too bad for China that they lost very badly, but then again, their military technology was quite held back, unlike Japan's.
Cuz chinese always curruption
@@gangwu4541 yes. Qing have more warships at the start of the war.
These Japanese soldier’s movie is picked up from “二百三高地”. So they are battling the Russian army.
And so its the 1904 war then.

While Japan was flourishing India was doing the opposite. I wish Aurangzeb had never applied those rules which disunited India and if the British never ruled then India would have been an amazing country like Japan
If that happens, India will be like China.

Were there other before 663 AD?
China naturally had good performance against Japan in hand to hand warfare pre-modern. it was only when Japan modernized their military that China started losing badly. In the Tang and Ming dynasty wars against Japan, their expeditionary forces shocked the Japanese because they always believed the Chinese troops to be inexperienced compared to their samurai veterans. Partly also because China can generally have stronger heavier infantry/cavalry. Ancient China was used to going toe-to-toe with equal sized countries so Japanese invasions were minor to them.
