The russians managed to nail a shot at the bridge/conning tower of the germans, so the germans can not do fire control and stopped firing. The russians have nowhere to go because there's a minefield right behind them. But they chose to bet their luck at going through the minefield in their smaller ship. Here they managed to lure the germans to chase them and get into the minefield they just layed down. The germans are out of luck and hit a mine. The mine might have made their magazine/ammo compartment explode so there's a secondary explosion which were much more spectacular than the one underwater. ~Hope this helps to explain the plot of this scene so some people don't give biased argument due to the lack of information

Thank you for elucidating what they meant to show... still, it's complete fantasy. In real life there wasn't a single Russian ship anywhere near the SMS Friedrich Carl when she hit mines off the Lithuanian coast and there was no secondary explosion - she settled slowly enough that all but seven of her crew were lost in the sinking. And this scene is typical of Russian war films nowadays - very well made from a technical standpoint, complete nonsense when it comes to tactics, and utterly propagandistic. After all, this is not really about ships, it's more about hammering in a message about the triumph of the "rightly and god-fearing Russian people" in face of the "decadent godless west". Especially heavy handed here with the whole Orthodox liturgy and the "David and Goliath" imagery. In fact, I remember watching this film back when it came out in 2008 and thinking "wow, this is exactly like those Soviet propaganda films from the 60s, but reversed, with the communists now the baddies". But hey, if it worked then, why wouldn't it work now, right?

I don't think you're right, their ship appears to be a Russian destroyer of somekind. It looks similar to Kolchak's actually flagship the Pogranichnik so that is probably what it is supposed to be.

Man that moment the guy goes up,took the gun,aimed it, ordered his men to fired it and nailed the german bridge was my all time favorite scene. (Although it seems kinda mean that he'd ask a weaken bloody guy to do it). Thats exactly type of captain/commander/leader i'd love to serve. The one that can get the job done when he needs to.
The seamen were cheering because now they could live another day. The officers were quiet because they had sympathy for the other ship because they know how terrible it is to die out in the sea
And yet, they didnt obey common maritime law to resucue survivors, a tradition and duty that stil percists to this day. While it is a cool movie the battle is fictional, as well as the behavior of the officers and crew. Like all other navies the Russian navy would have ayempted to rescue survivors if the combat was at an end.

Friedrich Carl was built in Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. She was laid down in 1901, and completed in December 1903, at the cost of 15,665,000 Marks. She was armed with a main battery of four 21 cm (8.3 in) guns and was capable of a top speed of 20.4 kn (37.8 km/h; 23.5 mph). man, the praying scene kind of had me on the thought that at least when the ship was near toward doom, at least the Admiral of the ship had that moment to convey prayers to his crew and the ship if they didn't get out alive.

А между тем он один дрался против 5 японских миноносцев. Один из которых потопил, а два других привел в негодность и их пришлось тащить на буксирах ("Сазанами", "Акебоно") И если бы не подошли 2 японских крейсера, неизвестно как бы все вышло... Да херово все бы и так вышло,уже и снарядов не было на подходе крейсеров, и машинное отделение почти затоплено. Но, главное, он прикрыл своего ведущего с данными разведки P.S. У метро Горьковская в Санкт-Петербурге стоит памятник миноносцу "Стерегущий". И их морской девиз, похоже, не истлел... "Погибаю, но не сдаюсь!"

However a bit strange that they could miss so many shots at such a short range. In WWI during the battle of Juttland the Germans could hit ships at much longer ranges. A bit strange the Russian ship stops firing after hitting the bridge. They do seem to be using some kind of smokescreen (don't know if this was the intention) something that would make a lot of sense. I have seen the movie several years ago and I remember as it being one of the better ones.

Pretty impressive...only thing I wish they had done for accuracy is not sync the sound of the guns to the smoke showing. Even at 100 yards sound delay is noticable, and at naval ranges they are amazingly off.

Germany had the 4th, at the time they where depicting, France and the US had larger fleets, Russia had, on paper, the 5th largest, with Japan had 6th. Obviously the British Commonwealth had the worlds largest, the main issue with Russian ships being that despite being numerically large, most warships where horribly outdated and rarely made it to sea due to the ice drifts. In all honesty if you know anything about modern Russian naval history, you should be surprised that this destroyer didn't signal the sudden appearance of Japanese torpedo boats in the Baltic sea and maneuvers to launch torpedoes.

Then comes France and on fourth place was the US. 1914 the Nations had following fleetnumbers: GB: 510 Ships Germany: 268 Ships France: 197 Ships US: 168 Ships and within the war Germanys and GB Numbers are even bigger. I don't think you're right, their ship appears to be a Russian destroyer of somekind. It looks similar to Kolchak's actually flagship the Pogranichnik so that is probably what it is supposed to be.

Russian navy actually did okay in ww1, they were among the first to use seaplane carriers to launch an attack and sink an enemy ship against turkey, look up battle of cape sarych and battle of gulf of riga, also the battle portrayed in this movie is based on true events, a German cruiser was sunk by a minefield laid by a destroyer
There was no battle tho. The ship struck two mines and sinked slowly, allowing all but 7 sailors to evacuate.
This is just another Russian fantasy, just like their Black Sea Flagship that absolutely was not sunk in combat or their devastated Crimean Air Base that absolutely did not lost a single piece of aviation equipment.
I mean they couldn't do any worse than that embarrassment of a performance against the Japanese around a decade previous.

SMS Friedrich Carl was a German armored cruiser built in the early 1900s for the Imperial German Navy. She was the second ship of the Prinz Adalbert class. Friedrich Carl was built in Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg. She was laid down in 1901, and completed in December 1903, at the cost of 15,665,000 Marks. She was armed with a main battery of four 21 cm (8.3 in) guns and was capable of a top speed of 20.4 kn (37.8 km/h; 23.5 mph).
The ship served with the German fleet after her commissioning before being used as a torpedo training ship in 1909. In August 1914 after the outbreak of World War I, she was brought back to active service to act as Rear Admiral Behring's flagship in the Baltic Sea. Круто. А почему ж никто про миноносец "Стерегущий" ни разу никто ни слова не сказал? Ах, да. Про него ж ни разу не написано особо, и фильм не сняли.
А между тем он один дрался против 5 японских миноносцев. Один из которых потопил, а два других привел в негодность и их пришлось тащить на буксирах ("Сазанами", "Акебоно") И если бы не подошли 2 японских крейсера, неизвестно как бы все вышло...
Да херово все бы и так вышло,уже и снарядов не было на подходе крейсеров, и машинное отделение почти затоплено. Но, главное, он прикрыл своего ведущего с данными разведки
P.S. У метро Горьковская в Санкт-Петербурге стоит памятник миноносцу "Стерегущий". И их морской девиз, похоже, не истлел...

Why is this the best naval battle scene that I have ever seen?
An incredible movie that captures the time, the personalities and emotions. Vida longa aos heróis deste filme.
However a bit strange that they could miss so many shots at such a short range.
In WWI during the battle of Juttland the Germans could hit ships at much longer ranges.
A bit strange the Russian ship stops firing after hitting the bridge.
They do seem to be using some kind of smokescreen (don't know if this was the intention) something that would make a lot of sense.
I have seen the movie several years ago and I remember as it being one of the better ones.

Вот смотрю коментарии и диву даюсь, тут собрались опытные флотоводцы, морские волки которые на своей шкуре знаю что такое морской бой, знают как нужно обходить минные заграждения и учиться для этого не нужно. Правда в реале люди посвещают той или иной специализации - всю жизнь. А большинство из вас не имеет ни армейской ни морской специализации, но блин... специалисты из вас так прут. Так же как мастера воздушного боя, мастера танкого боя, реальные летчики-истребители, танкисты, моряки просто - нервно курят в сторонке.

Pretty impressive...only thing I wish they had done for accuracy is not sync the sound of the guns to the smoke showing. Even at 100 yards sound delay is noticable, and at naval ranges they are amazingly off.

@@warpath-ursularennenkampff4024 не сильнее, а несоизмеримо сильнее. Логичнее было выпустить торпеды (миноносец как ни как) и отваливать в туман пока не прелетело. Ибо "Стрелку" одного снаряда от немца хватило бы чтобы погибнуть.
А у этой стрелки, дальность хода какая? В начале 20 века в русско-японскую 1000м была

Germany had the 4th, at the time they where depicting, France and the US had larger fleets, Russia had, on paper, the 5th largest, with Japan had 6th. Obviously the British Commonwealth had the worlds largest, the main issue with Russian ships being that despite being numerically large, most warships where horribly outdated and rarely made it to sea due to the ice drifts.
In all honesty if you know anything about modern Russian naval history, you should be surprised that this destroyer didn't signal the sudden appearance of Japanese torpedo boats in the Baltic sea and maneuvers to launch torpedoes.
@@Mikalent simply Not true. Germany had the second biggest Fleet. Then comes France and on fourth place was the US.
1914 the Nations had following fleetnumbers:
GB: 510 Ships
Germany: 268 Ships
France: 197 Ships
US: 168 Ships
and within the war Germanys and GB Numbers are even bigger.
Just research 1 min and you will finden correct Numbers. It isn't so hard.
