I appreciate how you zoom in to areas you’re focusing on. I find most beauty gurus are so self conscious that they never do zoom ins cause you might see “flaws” but it makes tutorials so much harder.
As a retired professional who just can't retire my brushes - both makeup and hair, I applaud your authenticity. It really bothers me when film isn't accurate. I also am a huge fan of the 30's, 40's and Victorian era.
yellowduck2728 Yes, Its most likely done with styling rats which are very much like bumpits. You can simply take extra hair and wrap it in a hair net. This is what women did all the time during the war. OR if your hair is thick enough you can just roll it into place. Not sure if this is OK but you can check out my youtube channel and I have a video there on how to create a rat.
I love how you show a real interest in history and its relation to beauty, fashion and cosmetics. It's really interesting to see how all of these looks and techniques developed into the ones we're familiar with today!
I'd love to take a history class like this and that your grade is based upon how accurate you can replicate the style from the time period while learning how it relates to and shows the way of the times. It would be awesome.
Your channel is probably the first showing videos with AUTHENTIC retro makeup, eventhough you use modern products. many other videos sell a winged eyeliner and a hair updo as 40s. You're amazing, thank you!
I actually learned something with these tutorials, and wanted to thank you! I never could understand that one difference between my Nanna and myself, the fact that she was astonished by my ability to walk out the door without "at least some lipstick". From your 50s video, I learned that her generation was effected by the lack of men, therefore requiring young women to always look their best, fully made up and dressed in order to attract a husband. even if it was to makes quick grocery run. My generation not only had many more choices in terms of lifestyle, marriage, careers, etc, but those choices influenced our priorities greatly. I have a new appreciation for our feminist fore-mothers.
B0Nnaaay Me, too!! I am 57 and I used to like the "natural" look in my 20's, much to the chagrin of my darling Mom!! I can certainly see her point, now!! I try not to go places w/out my makeup on, and really love trying out the new colors that come out even season!! Thanks Mom, I love and miss ya!
Thank you! :) YES! It's amazing what they used in a time period with so much strife! I can only imagine the stories your grandmother must have, wow! My favorite story of that period was when the nylon stockings were hard to get and the women would put makeup on their legs and have a girlfriend draw the seams on the back of their legs with eyeliner to mimic the stockings. Talk about resourceful!
WW2 was another big factor of makeup and style of the 1940s. Products were rationed and supporting your troops was very important for women after Pearl Harbor. Often using sex appeal to get war donations.
Some parts of Captain America: The First Avenger shows that with his bonds sales montage. Its pretty realistic in the women's sex appeal usage with the line dancing girls.
That's right! So much so, red lips were seen as a sign of patriotism. Also, apparently Hitler was badly against red lipstick so women would wear it as a result. Lipstick companies would even go so far as to name shades 'Victory Red" or "Montezuma Red"
French aristocracy is not just Marie Antoinette French/18th century as I think you may mean, but covers the whole time of French royalty. So French aristocracy would cover 509-1792
YES! I'm definitely inspired to continue with this as a series; it's so interesting to see where makeup began and what a taboo it was when it started. For example, in the 1800s prostitutes and actresses were the only ones known to wear heavy makeup so if a woman of society wore it, she had to be discreet and wear as little as possible. They didn't even want to be seen buying it! What a long way we've come!
I had passed by to watch the hooded eyes makeup tutorial and this is my 5th video in the last fifty minutes. Why didn't I find you earlier? It's not the products you use, it's the way you teach. Very helpful and very detailed. I also appreciate the fact that you do an extended research before a vintage makeup video. This is the real professional approach! Already a fan of you! Greetings from Greece!
just addicted to your videos, you are so stunning and your videos are so much more helpful than most other beauty gurus that i've come across. wishing you health happiness and success for 2015! xXx
You nailed it! I look back at old photos of my grandmother and great grandmother and you really got the essence of the time! I love the classy 40s look and look forward to more videos from you 😊
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. I am doing a 1940's lady detective-film noir shoot next Friday and this is exactly what needed to see. XXO
Thank YOU for saying this! :) I'm so humbled to hear it was able to help you! Funny you made the comment today as I just filmed the 1920s tutorial that will be posting tomorrow. Ha! These are more fun to do so I can only imagine the fun you're going to have!! Enjoy making GREAT period pictures!! :D
Zabrina...here I am again! lol I've only been here 1 minute and 14 seconds and those words you just spoke could have come straight out of MY mouth.!! I feel exactly the same as you about the glamorous 40's but I also love love love the Victorian Era!! My 2 favs also. I loved your other video so much here I am again. And so far I am loving this one,too....OK Now I have finished. And you look absolutely stunning. The knowledge you share about make up over the ages is much appreciated and I would imagine it would set you apart from most of the other channels. But like I said, I don't watch many of these kinds of videos but you do a great job and I enjoy watching . Thanks again~
Thank you so so so so much for making these videos; I have to do 10 page research paper on the history of makeup and your videos have helped me get at least 6 of those pages done!! Thank you!!!
THIS TUTORIAL WAS BRILLIANT. You are very detailed, and slow down the entire process enough to both hear and see what steps need to be taken. I am actually a photographer, not a makeup artist, and I had also been trying to research the times so I can properly project them in my next photo project. Thank you for creating and posting this, as I will be using this as my primary go-to when shooting and making sure everything is picture-perfect! This is extremely helpful! Thanks so much!
I'm a new subscriber and I know this is an older video...but you just won my heart when you said you love time periods where there was a lot of femininity. LOVE!
Great video. :) I actually follow old style makeup looks like this in my everyday life, I totally prefer it to the overdone contoured stuff going on today.
Ha! Thanks! :) If you Google 'Victory Rolls Hair' you'll be able to find some examples and tutorials; I took one side and rolled it on itself towards the scalp, pinned like crazy and then did the same to the other side. The bangs I curled upwards into a circular roll and pinned. Then I just curled the loose ends and brushed them so they curled in towards the neck. ;)
Zabrena, can't believe this video is a few weeks short of 11 years ago! Whew! You are a real professional. My Sister has a 1940's app that can make you look like you just popped out of the 1940's. It's amazing. Thank you. I hope you are still doing this sort of thing.
Thanks babe!! :D I will definitely need to do a series! I love History, one of my most fav subjects in school, so you can imagine how much fun JUST the research was for this look! :D XOXO!
Beautiful Zabrena!!! Love the look and hair! :) Like you, I love the times and era's that women were actually feminine! I don't know how you could do a Victorian Era makeup look, because they wore little to no makeup. No eye makeup anyway. Just some powder, what we would call blush, and something to darken the mouth. I don't know if you've seen the movie Water for Elephants, but that would be a very interesting look with 20s hair and makeup. Great job, Zabrena! XOXO
How did I only find you now??? I love this series so much! You are so talented! Also love love love the history that comes with it! Safe to say you are my favourite RUclips find in a long time!!
Awwww Zabrena, I am a long time subbie but have just somehow stumbled upon these and I am just having the time of my life watching them. Happy New Year to you and yours. Peace and love xo
Ha! Awww.. my Mom used to tell me stories about drawing the seams on their legs! She also said back then, the mascara burned horrible if it got in your eyes- yikes! I miss her... Anyway, the 40's look is gorgeous on you! This is one of my favorite videos of yours. Thanks Zebrina! x
Oh my God... When I saw you with that make-up on and that hair, I was shocked... You look a lot like Rita Hayworth... seriously now !!! Your videos are awesome !!! Greetings from Greece !!! :*
Oh my goodness! I blast from the past, Zabrena! I came across this old video of glamorous you, doing my fav era. ❤ Beautiful woman! I think we were both born too late. ❤ Love you, girl.❤
Cool video . One thing I've noticed though when I've researched the era is that most sources say that women generally didn't do eyeliner in this way . Also it would have been cool to see a hunters bow on the lips
I really like your hair style in this tutorial!! I'm going to a 1940/1950's themed party next week and this hair would be perfect! Would you happen to have a tutorial for the hair??
You look amazing with '40's style makeup & especially the hair! It's amazing on you & makes me wish I didn't have a fringe/(bangs)! When I was little my grandma used to tell me about how rationing meant that most women she knew resorted to using stuff like beetroot juice as lipstick & blush when she was growing up. No wonder the "minimal" look was in ;)
Thank you ever so much for your 1940s inspired tutorial! We are attending a theme party tonight and now I have all the confidence I need thanks to you and my daughter who introduced me to Mac a few years ago.
You look beautiful! I love your historically accurate videos! I was also wondering if you had a video explaining the make-up basics you need to have, like primer, concealer, foundations ect. and what you need them for. I'm kind of a newbie with make up. And if you don't have a video, could you please make one? Pretty please??
Just watched this dec 2018 and I remember being subscribed to you when you were myeyeshadowconsultant! A total trip to see how your techniques have changed, editing styles etc! I would love to see you do an update on this series, wish you’d included a hair tutorial for this look as well. Also, do you ever age?!
New subscriber! This type of makeup looks fantastic on you! This is the closest 1940s look I've seen. I am also obsessed with the 1940s look as well as the 1950s. This tutorial was informative and easy to follow! Love this look! xx
Hi! Well, I always use eye primer, but I do the eyes first so in case some of the eyeshadow falls onto my face I can always clean the face up with a makeup remover wipe or just apply my foundation and make any mistakes/fallout disappear! ;) If you apply your face makeup first, and then your eye makeup, you can end up dropping eyeshadow onto your face and then you have an even bigger mess. :/
Hi! I picked these up at a Premiere Designs jewelry party a couple years ago. They may still have them! You can locate a jeweler in your area on their website at premierdesigns(dot)com ;)
More than anything, I love the research you put into your videos. Great job and Great idea, I love learning about different time periods and the way make up has changed over the years. keep it up :)
For the girl with a make-up budget...which 5 eyeshadow colors from Mac, if you had to choose, for a girl with 'our' coloring, would you pick? I have pale skin like yours but my hair is dark brown and my eyes are hazel, a little more on the greener side. I've never purchased Mac products, but would like some place to start...so any 'have to have' ideas on shadows? I'm definitely thinking 'blank type' should be one..but kind of get lost after that.
I also am a huge fan of the 30's, 40's and Victorian era.
do you have any ideas how to recreate Sabrina's hair in this video?
yellowduck2728 Yes, Its most likely done with styling rats which are very much like bumpits. You can simply take extra hair and wrap it in a hair net. This is what women did all the time during the war. OR if your hair is thick enough you can just roll it into place. Not sure if this is OK but you can check out my youtube channel and I have a video there on how to create a rat.
twominutetips
I didn't use anything except my own hair to create the style :)
twominutetips thanks I'll check it out!
***** you did a great job of it :)
I love how you show a real interest in history and its relation to beauty, fashion and cosmetics. It's really interesting to see how all of these looks and techniques developed into the ones we're familiar with today!

I would horrify my Mom when she would visit me at work, with my apathy of lipstick application. First thing she would mention :D
Can you do like a old hollywood dark noir makeup look please? Love your videos!
***** ohmigod yes! pleease! i really need it. for an upcoming college fest Fashion Show. please please please. :*
Oh my GOD, YES PLEASE 🖤
40s to 60s golden era in my opinion

I love the 40's, but I prefer the red lipstick better for the decade as opposed to the dark pink
I know what you mean
You should go back even further! like a french aristocracy look!
YES PLEASE
*buys wig*
yes but from which era? "french aristocracy" covers up quite some years
French aristocracy is not just Marie Antoinette French/18th century as I think you may mean, but covers the whole time of French royalty. So French aristocracy would cover 509-1792

Your hairstyles are adorable in this series. PLEASE do a tutorial :D
You look beautiful! I love your historically accurate videos! I was also wondering if you had a video explaining the make-up basics you need to have, like primer, concealer, foundations ect. and what you need them for. I'm kind of a newbie with make up. And if you don't have a video, could you please make one? Pretty please??
Beautiful! Love the historically authentic approach you take in your videos! I never know what I'm going to learn on my RUclips detours!

These are my favorite videos! So creative
Gorgeous and so thorough, really enjoyed this! Also love the music, very twin peaks!
Thank you sooo much Zabrina, your tutorial was worth the wait! You made it so simple and very classy. You're the best!

Hi! I picked these up at a Premiere Designs jewelry party a couple years ago. They may still have them! You can locate a jeweler in your area on their website at premierdesigns(dot)com ;)
you are so good at this series.
I knew the looks were different for each decade but seeing tutorials explains why. Thank you.

Your hair looks AMAAAZING in this video!

Hi Zabrena,I loved this tutorial you looked absolutely stunning,I love the 1940s as well and the 20s,please do a 20s look.
Thank you for the fabulous tutorial! At the end, you shot a look where you looked so much like Rita Hayworth!
Girl....... Looking gorgeous as always. Always spot on with your info.
I'm definitely thinking 'blank type' should be one..but kind of get lost after that.
can please do a 1960s makeup tutorial?
Really suits you a modern Rita Hayworth :-)
this is a really flattering look on you!!!!
I love your videos! I just came across your channel and now you are my favorite. I love how detailed you are in historic makeup. ❤
Wow! I loved the 20s look and this one is even more beautiful! You look gorgeous:)
