thanks for your video. Although I understand some of your points you definitely don't get a better or finer finish with airless than you do HVLP. I guess I would ask the question what do professionals spray cars with? I think it really depends on your application. I think airless such as the Graco X5 could apply a lot of paint in a small amount of time when doing something like painting siding or a shed or priming the inside of a house. I see pros using airless to spray the inside of a house and then they roll it out for a finished look and don't leave it like that. That should tell you enough about airless vs. HVLP. Yes, HVLP is slower so again depends on your application. If your finishing cabinets or spraying fine finishes I would go with a lower pressure system.
Here are some of the pros and cons that I have run into using HVLP systems.
1. Thinning of paint. Yes you have to get the viscosity right but most systems like the Fuji system I have have many different needle sizes for spraying different finishes.
2. Slow vs. fast - all depends on what you are trying to do. Do you care about a fine cabinet finish look when your staining or painting a fence? Go Airless
3. Overspray - HVLP has much lower overspray due to not having 1700 PSI at the tip like an airless
4. less paint usage with HVLP - Yes, it matters when your are spraying conversion varnishes, top coats, and paints that cost $80/gallon.
5. Cleanup - I only have to clean up my HVLP gun with a little lacquer thinner or water depending on what material your using.
6. Con is that I don't have a large cup on my HVLP gun and can spray only about 15 to 20oz at a time. You can buy a larger pressure pot but I don't have one of those
7. Costs - A good HVLP/Turbine system will definitely run you a lot more $$$$. You can buy an X5 at the hardware store for like 350.00
For those that are looking for the difference I think I've come to the realization that you might need both in your tool set. I'm thinking of keeping my Fuji system for cabinets and fine finishes and then getting something like a Graco X5 for larger projects such as sheds, fences, etc. You can absolutely do smaller projects with the airless as well with different tips such as a fine finish tip.
The biggest decision for possibly going I want to dedicate 1 system for clear finishes and one for paint. its a total pain in the butt to clean the gun 100% and if you get just s speck of paint in your clear that your having to do the project again. If you keep the two systems separate between clears and paints then you might find it easier. That's what I'm finding out. That or just make sure your gun is really really clean if your switching between the two products.

How would u spray top of door frame and windows without turning the hvlp gun atleast 90 degrees. I have a graco 395 now but would to get a hvlp for all my timber work.

Just sold a good Fuji mini mite 3 hvlp system, found it so cumbersome and heavy , and one thing you didn't mention was the ridiculous thinning of the paint you have to do with hvlp. Bought a gxff from ye last week. Your vids helped me make the decision.keep them coming.👍

@@SprayDirect I use lechler paint 5:1 and 20 to 30% thinners a bit costly paint but the best out there very hard wearing and the 943 range goes on a lot of stuff no primer needed cheap paints will need thinning down all depends on what you use 😀

Hvlp for me. The reason is that i had all the equipment and just needed to buy the gun to be able to spray. Opposed to buy a complete airless.. also the compressor i got so many other applications and tools for. So for the amount of paint jobs i need, the hvlp is just fine. I will probably buy an airless down the road because I'm a man and we need the best of the best tools in our toolkits
I get you a hundred percent, but I highly recommend a small airless. I bought a graco 390 PC for $800 and that monster has produced me easily over $30,000 in the year I've had it. Just this week we removed over $1000 of popcorn using this machine to apply water and scrape in one day. No hvlp will do that as quickly as an airless.... I'm on the opposite end. I'm saving up for an hvlp gun for finer finishes on my painting sites.
Ok so in the real world.... most UK painters get 95% of their work painting small rooms in residential houses. Ask any pro and they will confirm, the big airless machines are NO GOOD for these jobs. The time taken to mask up and then clean out the machine, nozzles, hoses makes the whole process tiresome and pointless. Also the airless machines spit and drip and the nozzles jam constantly.... Nozzles all clog over time and they are £30/40 a pop to replace. SO....... my recommendation is HVLP for skirting and doors first (overspray is minimal) and then roll the walls with a massive/wide roller. Airless is good for big commercial and new build ONLY.

@@makgconstructionltd6756 hvlp is cheap, just get an air compressor and a gun. If you already have a 20 gal air compressor, the gun is less than $50
Your right when it comes to the uk.. but in nz and aus the airless is a must you can spray out a 350sqm house in 4 hours these machines to not clog up if you know what your doing you probably didn't take the gun filter out .not sure why you would need a hvlp if you already have a airless.. it looks like what you would spray a car with... you can get tips for $5 on ebay
I have to use only 1 quarts of paints but the TDS of the paints suggesting either airless or conventional. Can I use HVLP because of the smaller volume? Because airless uses mostly 1 to 5 gallons. Have you tried HVLP for a product that recommends using airless ?
I can just buy an hvlp gun and any air compressor. Will that work do i need to buy the complete hvlp setup from the same company.

One thing you didn't mention, Graco suggest to not use the same airless unit to spray both solvent and water based paints, and to have a separate unit for each type of paints. I read somewhere that it is theoretically possible but the cleanup become much more of a chore.

Switching from solvent to water clogs filters so extra cleaning required. Also hard on pump seals.

Maybe someone will help me with this scenario. I have a wagner 350m (airless system) but I am a little disappointed with the power of this device, I have to dilute the paint a lot (more than 15%) to get something out. I have to paint my house (150m2) and maybe plaster on the walls and i was wondering if I could not use my 150 liters compressor with a pressure pot and HVLP or LVLP gun ? Is it a good idea? Is it a valid solution?

IMO:
Airless sprayers are more for professional painters doing big paint jobs consistently. The airless sprayers are a lot more expensive but get the job done faster. They’re good for walls and they’re usually used on big commercial buildings or houses. Not so good for fine details on smaller jobs.
HVLP are more for home DIY jobs and smaller more detailed projects in general. They’re used around the home for walls, cabinets, exterior of the home, furniture, etc. They’re a lot cheaper and do the job just fine. I would recommend getting metal spray tips instead of plastic though. The metal tips are a lot better, last longer, and better finish control.
So basically, walls ceiling etc use airless. For furniture doors etc use hvlp.
For a while there, I thought maybe you were going to demo the sprayers. Thank God you didn't! Who would want to see the difference, right?

Will an airless spray paint no matter the thickness, or does it sometimes need watering down, basically looking to paint emulsion on interior walls
You need to buy different nozzle to suit the paint thickness but whether you spry with HVLP, normal HP air or airless you normally will thin down and place multiple coats to achieve the best finish with a high built
What do you recommend to us diy people that just paint furniture pieces like 3-4 times a year?
How much do you want to spend. How much do you want to learn. What chance is that you might use the set up for something else.
If you just want a finer finish spray set up for small amounts of material and not much else then look at the Wagner/Titan XVLP range - cheapest worthwhile option in my opinion.
A compressor and HVLP gun will allow you to use the compressor for other things like running tools and inflation blowing out dust etc etc. Good value.
Airless is only worth having if you are going to paint more than that 3-4 times per year in my view. Use it to paint fences or sheds etc too. Airless is a steeper learning curve because the flow rate is high. You can empty a gallon of paint in one minute. A lot of mess if you’re doing it wrong. But once you master airless it is a game changer.

Well I bought 9.5 hvlp sprayer , and it works like shit , I wonder had the same problem like me ? it is like a wide horse , hard to control. It works 20 or 30 minutes constantly, put it down for 5 minutes, to do something else, pick it up and start spraying,now it spits the paint not spray normally like before, or done one coat, clean it, and use it again a few hours later, now it works like shit , no matter how you adjust it , it just made you feel waist of time while you needed it at the moment the most
Now I just want to get rid of it !

@@Antonio-bf2pc I see that. I apologize for not giving more details. Let me rephrase my original statement. It isn’t garbage. It isn’t awful. It’s just not any better then the Graco airless sprayer. I do own a small painting company and almost only use Graco sprayers. I love Graco, they typically have good products as well as great customer service. A+
However that particular sprayer isn’t great for the money. In fact it provides no better quality then any of there other sprayers as long as you are using a FF filter and a FF tip. This sprayer is like when a painting company like Sherwin Willaims offers a two in one paint that is a primer and top coat in one. While it does work for a limited time any Good painter knows That the best is still using two paints. A primer and a topcoat. If you’re going to spend the money you need a true hvlp. I recently also used a sprayer that atomizes the paint as it comes out and is a true HVLP. By far the most beautiful finish I’ve ever seen. So again I apologize. It’s not an awful by any means but the finish it leaves realistically you go to Home Depot spend 300 dollars on a Graco X5 magnum and with the right attachments and someone who knows how to spray get just as beautiful of a finish.

@@IrvingDzulD no, but I have used nearly every machine out there and have found, through trial and error, that these two are a waste of money. I now use Kremlin machines with excite guns. Very efficient transfer rates and high quality spray. Although expensive they pay back in terms of product used over the course of about 3 years for me. Cheers.
@@ouimetco But you are ignoring the fact that they are talking about the process... Disregarding of the brand, they use the same technique, Conventional, HVLP or Airless.

@@IrvingDzulD actually Greco machines are really good quality for what they are and do. I have a few of them still. Use for exteriors and new hires.
