    Sharks are creatures that strike fear into the hearts of many, although the truth is that sharks have more to fear from us than the other way around. Many of us just picture the great white shark as being the only kind of shark out there, but there are a ton of unique species of sharks out there, so many of which you may never have heard of! The greenland shark is thought to be one of the oldest species of shark in existence, and specimens have been found that are up to 400 years old! You might think that all sharks have fearsome teeth, but the megamouth shark and basking shark are planktivorous sharks, meaning that they feed only on small animals and plankton. And not all sharks are giant, hulking predators. The angular roughshark and the pyjama shark are both likely smaller than you are. If you’re looking for a truly bizarre looking shark, make sure you check out the goblin shark. We can definitely see where it gets its name! The speartooth shark is able to live in both fresh and salt water, and only in the last couple of years have we managed to tag adult members of this species. The frilled shark may look more like an eel than a shark, but just wait until you catch a glimpse of its teeth! And the wobbegong family of sharks enjoys traversing the bottom of the sea floor so much, that they have even begun to walk on it in their own way!

      Death101.1, well the oldest it could have been was 500 (n'something,) but it could have been just (just,) 270(something.)
      It's to do with the way they carbon date the poor sharks eye tissue, it's very approximate (+/-200 years approximate.) How do they get eye tissue samples, from a living shark without removing eye tissue using some kind of sharp tool? Yeah, friendly.
      Amazingly old though.

    We've seen two trains of Basking sharks on the ferry between England and Ireland, and they are absolutely gigantic sharks.
    Not that I've seen many you understand, but looking down on basking sharks is an awe inspiring sight.

    Greenland sharks turned out not to just be scavengers. They’re ambush hunters that kill seals and huge fish off the coast of Canada and Norway, and their jaws are like a saw. There was a documentary on it

    I've head of the greenland shark but didn't know it lived that long, I mean 400 years? That's pretty cool, all this time I thought the bowhead whale had the longest lifespan when it came to fish or creatures similar to fish.

  • @sofakingonmynuts1438
    @sofakingonmynuts1438 5 лет назад +28

    There is no way your mind would stay healthy for 400 years, i guess we experience brain issues once certain cells fail us. How would one possibly remember anything after so long, do these sharks have issues like this or is there a specific cell or protein, something that allows the shark to stay sane, or are they all crazy?

    • @superafrikanmedialabs8237

      Thats an interesting point, Someone should research that.

    • @stephencook7337
      @stephencook7337 5 лет назад +14

      How do you know if their minds deteriorate over time when they have a seriously long sexual maturity period? I think the development in a cold environment simply slows everything down for some animals. Doesn’t necessarily mean they forget things.....

    • @cervineblue3767
      @cervineblue3767 5 лет назад +6

      I was thinking this too! But such a slow metabolism and likely a much lower need for oxygen means cellular decay would also be much slower than ours which could mean that their minds could remain healthy over all that time? It’s only a guess

    • @sofakingonmynuts1438
      @sofakingonmynuts1438 5 лет назад +2

      The point is, 200 years of life is very long for us. If our bodies lasted 200 years we would have memory loss, our body would be weak.
      Do these sharks experience dementia, or have different cell structure?

    • @rjwelch17
      @rjwelch17 5 лет назад +2

      sofaking onmynuts fish brains are massively less evolved than mammalian, or specifically human, brains. I highly doubt their brains are even complex enough to experience dementia in the form you’re thinking of

  • @rottengirl7852
    @rottengirl7852 5 лет назад +4

    That is truly amazing. Imagine where that shark must've traveled over the span of 400 years. All the prey it caught, all the changes in the ocean it lived through...what a mysterious creature
    And...the frilled shark looks like it has a permanent chelsea smile...creepy
