- In Japan, the Oarfish holds a significant title as "the messenger from the palace of the God of the sea." Its name, it is believed, originated from the observation that its appearance often coincided with earthquakes or tsunamis. However, an intriguing event occurred in 2011 when approximately 20 regalecs washed up on beaches in the region just before Japan was struck by the devastating Tohoku earthquake and the subsequent tsunami.
Likewise, in Chile, a peculiar occurrence took place before an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hit. Japanese fishermen had stumbled upon a dozen regalecs shortly before the seismic event occurred.

Hello, I am the director of this show shot in 2015 and take the opportunity to answer to some of the comments and questions. This film has been filmed in Japan ( for stranded animals) and in the Med sea, offshore my hometown Marseilles. We encountered SEVERAL oarfish which measured between 2 and 9 meters long and belong to the species Regalecus glesne.
Note that the original film was natively shot in UHD and will soon be available in this format with 5.1 surround sound. On a big screen, this would make a real difference. Indeed, this could be scary to dive at night in 2000m deep water, even if we mostly spent our time between the surface and 50 meter deep: we established strict safety protocol to avoid loosing our team members which included safety lights and deco-stops. Diving in this offshore location requires dead flat sea conditions where currents are at their minimum. On a windy day, the currents could be so strong that the massive buoy is dragged under the surface ! It took us 2 seasons ( mostly spring/ early summer during planktonic bloom) to be able to can all the footage you see in the show. If I was to shoot this show again, current advances in deep sea diving ROVs would bring another dimension to the story and could be able to film more behavior of this elusive fish.
To answer the question about the scariest moments, Roberto Rinaldi did have some pretty insane "drags" to the land of hyper pressures: while framing for the animal, he did not figure out how deep he was until his ears went difficult to compensate the 6 x atmospheric pressure that prevails 50 meters below the surface... then he gently returned back to the surface with several deco stops !
To answer other questions ( I have provided some other answers directly when asked for):
1) there is not a single CGI in this film (except for the MRI scanner which has been performed by a vet in Japan and produced a cloud of points); all the footage of the oarfish are live, in its natural environment
2) I am not an AI !
3) we are working on other factual projects with elusive deep-sea animals but we need a lot of expensive ressources to venture into the depths. The challenge is to capture natural behavior of animals which are used to perpetual darkness
4) the close caption issue will soon be adressed by the publisher of my film
5) we publish from time to time some samples of our work on our company (Saint Thomas Productions) social medias
6) our speciality is science, environment and wildlife factual films.
7) the original score of this film has not (yet) been released
8) we have used the imperial system for units, as the client (National Geographic Channels) requested it - we have a series of alternative metric takes with the same actor (James Faulkner): we will change this soon.
9) this film was shot on RED DRAGON cameras, in 5K to 6K, 16 bits, original format, as well in 3D stereo with 2x C400 Canon Cameras for an IMAX project which has not materialized
10) I have nothing to do with the "tsunami" hook created by the publisher. But such belief is indeed deeply anchored, albeit not scientific at all, in Japan.

When I studied marine biology in the 80s my teacher said that no one had ever seen a live oarfish (outside of "still alive but mostly dead" or "sea monsters"). Thanks for bringing me up to date on these weird creatures! :-)

This documentary is amazing, truly. I almost came to tears when the oar fish appeared when they were filming at night. So majestic and beautiful.
My daddy was a navy deep sea diver for 27 years. and he always told me that there is no way anyone could ever know all of the life down deep.
I have a friend who is a deep sea diver. Spends week under the sea in diving bells working on oil installations. One day was walking across the sea bed in zero visibility and walked into a 'wall' taller than his height and wider than he could stretch his arms . The 'wall' eventually swam away. He thinks it might have been a giant sunfish resting on the sea bed but this was the North Sea which would have been very unusual. He still doesn't really know what it was.
That's right. The sea is virtually unexplored relative to it's size, and the deep sea is the greatest mystery of the sea. (My father was a diver as well 👍.)
I was a bagger at a supermarket for two and a half years, and I could have told you that.

Those things are huge sometimes I think that they might fall on me when I'm fishing on acnh. And also after years of playing I finally caught the legendary fish only when it rains
I came across this video by accident, and being a diver myself, I was very interested in watching the divers and hearing about the scientific studies around this wonderful fish. Kudos to the divers and scientists who are working so hard to better understand this strange fish. I was mesmerized throughout this video. Thank you!

What a beautiful and majestic fish, I love his peacock like antennas and silver colour. You could see the divers hand reflexion on it, like a mirror .. Also his fins light up and move so gracefully, very mystical fish. I hope that they are safe and prolific forever.

I'm constantly amazed by undersea footage. My son is working on a NOAA fisheries research ship along the Atlantic Coast, and I've started watching a lot of whatever I can find on RUclips to get some sense of what he's doing & seeing every day. It's so mysterious to me (even though I've lived most of my life in NYC, one of the great harbor cities, with plenty of beach access) - my only real experience with the ocean is a lifetime of swimming (when I was younger, I drove lifeguards mental by going out past the breakers) - but that only scratches the surface of what lies beneath
Wow that diver with his rebreather system and silvered dive suit looks like a Wizard of the Water.
Until they mentioned that rebreather, I couldn't figure out what was so magical about his appearance.
I haven't seen footage of divers without bubbles in decades, and I was mesmerized by the images.

These should be used with whales. They seem to welcome snorkels but they don;t like teh bubbles either.
Our Special Forces in South Africa used the rebreather a lot during the 80s. In those times, they could only dive to a certain depth with it, not as deep as today.
@@hennies9509you're talking about pure Oxygen re-breathers, which are limited to 10m depth because beyond Oxygen is toxic. And for most commando ops that would be enough. But there are other re-breathers that mix different gases, to go deeper.
I'm surprised that it wasn't discussed that it's more likely they travel/ sense direction due to those tentacles. This would explain the buoy attraction due to feeling the vibration through the waters. Not to mention, if they're hailed to be a beacon for a possible Tsunami or an eartquake..earthquake... wouldn't that also fit with it being vibrational more than smell?

The English fish expert Jeremy Wade fron Nat Gov. was informed about this fish and he went down at this same place in Europe and waited for the Oarfish to show up, and it did. He could gently touch it. The film was clear and also excellent. The greatly feared fish was harmless and beautiful with rainbow color shining lights on its back. A couple of weeks ago, browsing the internet, I came across the Regalecus glesne. But information was scarce. Then, right now, what a fantastic coincidence, this great documentary comes out that provides many answers, as well as excellent, Oscar-worthy camerawork and editing.
I was blown away by all of the things you, who have commented on, and even more. I have many years of College in America, and 3 years sailing in the Mediterranean. Thank you for this video. About 8 years ago an Oar Fish was hauled up on a boat and it made international news and I happened to see the deceased creature in photos. Before that time I had never heard of such a fish. I was pleased there was some knowledge about them, already on-line. This video is extraordinary. I am glad they still exist, as I was certain they had already been wiped out by humans or climate change.
What a beautiful and majestic fish, I love his peacock like antennas and silver colour. You could see the divers hand reflexion on it, like a mirror. Also his fins light up and move so gracefully, very mystical fish.
I am at awe of this incredible documentary: I usually stop watching fish docus after about 10min because I do not find them particularly inspiring. Here - I just got stuck and could not move away! Incredible documentary and so well done. Thank you!

It'd be reasonable to assume that there's someone piloting the boat, but I don't know how much time they'd have to monitor the dive.

When I was stationed in Guam in 1976 77 on an air-sea rescue boat in the Navy, we found one of these fish floating on the water after a Japanese salvage crew was blowing up sections of an ocean liner that had sunk during typhoon Pamela at the entrance of the harbor. It wasn't very long about 5 p.m. but it was the strangest fish we had ever seen. The island of Guam in the Marianas island is next to the Marianas trench which we all know is the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean in the world.
This documentation is straight-up monumental. It has resolved a thousand-year-old mystery! I remember, even in 2010 or so, there weren't any live oarfish caught on camera. Then this documentation reveals so many incredible details about this mysterious marine animal all in one go, along with all the astonishing beautiful footages.

It would make sense. They live in the deep ocean and it sensed the vibrations and was disturbed. It could swim into shallower water and people would see it. The animals in the Indonesian tsunami all started heading more inland.
I am beyond grateful for the many first time discoveries uncovered during this project and for you guys being so kind as to film every moment live with such sensibility to the beauty and wonder of the oarfish mystery, and make it accesible for humanity to appreciate and science to record.
This was a tremendous effort with many risks and trials.
You answered all of the questions that lingered in my mind around previous footage and pictures Ive seen of oarfish, and were very diligent to extract so much information in the time you had. Like, you didnt leave the oarfish until you made sure to take all possible samples, and without hesitation.
This whole program has completely satisfied my intrigue for this creature, and those like me who thirst of the almost mythic wonders of our dying planet. Without guys like you, people like me who are stuck and so immersed in the rush hour cycle of work life and personal affairs, would completely forget that the vast wild natural world outside goes on without us. Its wholesome to know that there are dedicated people out there who are still hard at work capturing these phenomenons.
That last appearance of the oarfish at night. The way it turned and its crest and fins swayed gracefully in the water made it look like a mythical being.

Wonderful! I was lucky enough to find one of these beaches in Baja many years ago. A mystery of the sea at the time. Now a wonderful bit of knowledge and nature.
I too saw one washed up on the east Cape of baja about 12 to 15 years ago. What a treat it was, I had no idea how rare it was at the time.

Every now and then it turns out to be necessary to understand French, to understand what's going on in the documentary - like at the end where the voice-over goes "It's dangerous for divers" with no further explanation while one of the divers explains the oarfish was diving quickly and to dangerous depths, and the divers hadn't initially noticed.
I clicked on this for a quick look because of the interesting title. After what I thought to be around 10-15 minutes, I realized I had actually watched over 40 minutes of this documentary completely hypnotized by the shots, narration and soundtrack. Great work.

This was hypnotising, mesmerizing a terrifying at the same time. The majesty of the Oarfish is absolutely spellbinding, and the footage captured by these divers in black waters of 2 KM deep open water (!!) is the stuff of nightmares to me.

Such spell-binding photography and mesmerizing music. When I first saw pictures of this fascinating fish, I was awestruck! The ocean holds so many secrets and fascinating creatures. Thank you, Sir, for producing a true wonder of exploration!
The captions are completely different from what's actually being said. The meaning is usually (but not always) the same, sure, but it's confusing if you just use them as assistance rather than relying 100% on one or the other. I miss random words, and it's usually easy enough to just glance down and figure it out with captions, but with this video I have to get the context of a whole different sentence first (and usually the whole sentence isn't on screen to use) to figure out what I missed. Just pointing it out for the future in case you care about accessibility.
Edit: Okay, 20 minutes in and I think I figured it out after seeing that the captions for the expert speaking English were also wrong. I'm 99% sure whoever did the English captions either didn't have or chose not to watch the video, and instead just translated the French captions to English blind. That's pretty disappointing.
That is def the only thing that could make sense of the weird gibberish subtitles. What a weird thing to do on an English language doc. lol

This is probably my most favorite sea lige documentary. All the data they got and they never once felt the need to catch one fish for scientific studies. Instead they spent months putting their own lives in danger to study and make this amazing documentary. Fantastic!

I too was not planning on watching this whole thing - I started in the middle to see a picture of the oarfish, was amazed at the footage, then continued to watch, totally entranced and had to go back to the beginning to watch the whole thing. Theres a fish in Japan, called the Namasu (a type of catfish) that also predicts Earthquake and Tsuamis. They are very still, motionless, throughout 95% of the day, lying in wait for passing prey. But for thousands of years, Japanese fishermen noticed that they catch WAY more Namasu right before an Earthquake hits. It went down in folklore and legend. But now scientists use Namasu to actually predict Earthquakes.

An earthquake is generated by tectonics, these tectonics have certain preludes,
which the feesh may be able to detect, which in turn tells them to get away from whichever depth
at which they usually reside, which in turn gets them caught into the currents of the oceans.
Their build obviously says 'slow boat' and thus once they get caught in the current,
they tend to wash up (more).
I think these feesh are actually quite used to great depth, but any tectonics nearby get noticed
since at great depth there's no light which augments the other senses,
like heat or micro oscillation of nearby tectonic plate parts.
(These micro oscillations happen whenever small parts of the tectonic plate give way,
not causing an earthquake, but being preludes to one, when the frequency becomes greater.
The feesh can detect these, and once it reaches a noise threshold, they go 'buh bye',
and leave the danger zone, which in turn usually involves leaving the depth they normally occupy.)
Obviously, any violent quake below the water results in a tsunami.
And what feesh would like to be witness to such an event at the expense of it's life.

This is fascinating and it will be interesting to learn more about these and other deep sea creatures as our technology gets better and better. I am also fascinated to learn more about how the earth works together with all its parts: ocean, volcanoes, plants, microbes, etc to regulate our atmosphere and maybe even counteract pollution.
Oarfish are beautiful, they look like they are made of liquid silver. Surely they could have come up with a better name than oarfish. I would name it Quicksilver.
