I dont know, the Dwarf Lanternshark looks kinda like worm with a small fin and if you stuck it on a hook you'd probably catch something. Wouldnt recommend using them in your garden though.

Surprised that the Cookie Cutter sharks didn't make this list, being that they're named for the way they grab onto larger fish and just sort of wiggle around in a circle, cutting out "cookie shaped" chunks of flesh to eat. During the cold war, Cookie Cutter sharks often tried to eat submarines, and sometimes damaged their sonar equipment in the process. For a long time, the U.S thought that the Soviets were using some kind of new anti-sonar technology against them until they discovered it was a bunch of misguided sharks.

It's a dumb and petty thing, but it frustrates me how often Goblin Sharks are depicted with their jaws extended forward. Yes, that is how they bite/catch prey, but most of the time, their mouth is tucked in and they look like most other Sharks. It's like depicting a missile as an explosion.

it's a pretty good strategy imo...showing the most unique and distinctive features of a species usually increases interest in the animal itself which is what it's all about and helps the animal in the long run

evolution requires four things to work.
selection
mutation
isolation
recombination
for a seperate species to develop isolation is necessairy and seeing how globalization and migration keeps humanity from forming isolated populations, i don't see humanity spliting into many different species.
there is a strong possibillity that the sentinelese people, who are living isolated on an island under the protection of the indian government, might evolve into a seperate species, given that we keep leaving them alone for long enough. but that is just one isolated population and once they invent the ship, they too will no longer be isolated.
so unless world war 3 destroys all human technology, forcing us to only ever mate with people who live on the same land mass, i don't see humanity spliting into different species ever.

Even 150 years is still jailbait, since humans don't become legal as soon as they're sexually mature. Girls usually start their periods at around 11 years old, and become legal at 16 (if you're over 18 or you live in America, that's 18). Since most people use 18 as the age, that gives a ratio of 11:18. 11 is prime so we can't simplify that. 150/11*18= 245.45, so basically, until she's 245.45 years old, she's still jailbait.

Cookie cutter sharks are really cool small sharks. They have ovular mouths and actually don't usually have to kill their prey. Instead they open their mouth until it is fully circular shaped, and then bite into the side of the prey. After that they can spin their body in the water while they bite down, cutting out a near perfect circle of skin & muscle from the outside of the animal (smaller than the diameter of a can of soup).
Scientists originally found it and pieced it all together after spotting larger sharks, whales and dolphins with circular scars and wounds on their sides or fins.

I'm not saying they do exist, but what makes you so sure they don't? You know we've only explored about 5% of our oceans and even less than that when it comes to the ocean floors. If we know of this many species of marine dwelling creatures in 5% imagine the total number of creatures in 100%... Open your minds to possibilities, don't be so absolute. Science is admitting it was wrong all the time. We don't know everything by far. Just because something isn't probable doesnt mean it isn't possible.

If they've survived this long that means that they would have adapted and evolved over time. Nothing in nature stays the same forever if it learns better ways to survive and thrive. Even the human race is micro evolving generation to generation to better suit our needs. The physical bodies of these sharks could have adapted and overcame the inability to be in colder temperatures and adjusted to be able to withstand the pressure of deeper depths. Again, I'm not saying they're definitely still around, but I'm not going to close my mind to that possibility either. *The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.*

I see wobbegongs nearly every time I go diving. They mostly are sleeping as it's daytime but I have seen them swimming around. I saw one eating an octopus it had killed once but I didn't see the attack. They do bite people a lot but it's mainly when people step on them or when someone sees their tales sticking out from under a rock and tugs on it (stupid thing to do as they are flexible enough to bite their own tails). It's rarely unprovoked when they attack.

Sometimes though, it doesn't take much to earn a bite on the butt.

Over the Xmas break, I caught and released, 5 different types of shark. Smooth hammerhead, school shark, gummy shark, banjo shark, and a leopard shark. It was good to see lots of different species, I practice enviro tackle use, brass not lead, and hooks that oxidize in less than 12 hrs.
This time Hank was even funnier and more entertaining than always. Very well done and thanks....

I am so grateful that all the sharks on this list (except for the Wobbegong) live deep enough in the ocean that we don't need to worry about ever meeting them while swimming IRL.

There was a guy who was criticized for posting a video of him smoking weed from a bong that was made from a shark skull to the song Baby Shark. So, it's bad that he had killed an endangered species. But the fact that he made a bong from its skull and played baby shark in the video shows...something else...bad.
Fun fact from a former aquarist. The Spotted Wobbegong can strike faster than the average human reaction time. If you get too close, they will literally bite you before you realize it. Also the tassels on their face help to break up their outline within coral structures, which is how most animals identify things (we notice patterns).

I remember going on a long time trying to convince myself that goblin sharks aren’t real until I finally had the courage to use my voice & do my own research ... in 3rd grade we had to do an animal “research paper” and I wanted to write about goblin sharks, when I told my teacher she called me stupid and said those aren’t real. I felt very embarrassed bc everyone heard and laughed. I was doing my own research at the age of 7 while my teacher who was in her late forties didn’t even believe in speciation, heck probably not even in evolution. Currently, I’m a third year biology major

Wobbegone sharks are my absolute favorite shark to bring up. They're like a shag carpet that came to life, and their name sounds like an idyllic Wisconsin town where the children are above average.
All this time I assumed tail whip was a crappy move.

Thresher sharks have been my favorite shark, and one of my favorite animals since I was in 2nd grade and had to write a report about a shark species for winter homework. Probably the longest I've considered something my favorite.

I always loved the thresher shark ever since I went to the birch aquarium on a field trip when I was young. I thought it was so cool that a shark could be like a whip. Very cool to see it get recognized

Yea! I live on the SW coast of Australia! Seen a few Noah’s as I love to free dive for abalone and crayfish (lobster) . Lots of seals and even more great white sharks. They are a very efficient and intelligent predator. I’ve bumped one off and swam at speed from a few. They are not to be fkd with. Most people have no clue they are there until the teeth sink in. Evolution has provided them the perfect camouflage. Blue grey skin on top, bright white belly, as they hunt from below, thrusting upwards to strike, like I said most don’t see the coming. Come to Australia for a holiday but, be smart.

I think it is amazing animals like the thresher shark somehow naturally know to use their tail as a whip for hunting.... I mean, other sharks dont do this, they are not raised by caring parents that teach them. Yet- they just know! I think that's very cool!

After your woebegong section I had to put you on hold and go look for pictures of one. They are amazing, such graceful swimmers and when you see their patterns they are awesomely beautiful. They call them carpet sharks but I've never seen a carpet that lovely. Their "snatch" is way scary though, so fast and such a big mouth! Eeeekers. They don't chew, just swallow it all whole. As always SciShow opens my eyes to something completely new; thanks guys and gals!
