I personnally witnessed this incredible caution from humpback whales towards humans. Our group was snorkeling altogether watching a baby whale playing at the surface while the mother was checking about 5meters right under us. When time to play was over mother slowly came to the surface extremely close to us (I could have touched her with my hand). Of course we didn't move at all and stayed altogether the whole time as it is recommended by the authorities.
We are talking about a 20 meters long animal weighing 30 tons, yet it swam around us at the surface absolutely perfectly so that none of us was harmed.
