    Bidirectional is great but you need 0ms failover and compatible battery in home so you can drive away without shutting off the house in an outage.

      True, but depends if that is critical. Most of these V2H are closer to a backup generator. Versus something like a Tesla Powerwall that takes over so fast the lights don't flicker and the TV stays on.

    🤔 a used Ford Lightning with 98kwh is roughly $30k. If I combine that with a Ecoflow Deltpro Ultra I can power my house for a fraction of the cost than the GM home inter-grated unit

      Sort of. I have a Lightning and have been experimenting with the options. It is true that powering an Ultra from the truck and using the Ultra battery during the times the truck is not attached is a great idea, provided you get a used Lightning with the Pro-Power onboard option, which is ~$1000. Many used Lightnings will not have Pro-Power onboard.
      However, the cost of the Ultra is not a small fraction of the cost of the GM (or Ford) system, it is a significant cost ($5800) and that doesn't include the critical loads subpanel. In addition, the total output of the truck and the Ultra in this mode is 7200W.
      If you are willing to drop to 4000W, the new Delta Pro 3 costs $3700. Also, installation costs will vary significantly.

      Gotcha, the SunRun rep quoted me $15k for a bi-directional charger. I figured I could get 2 Delta Pro Ultras to take advantage of the 50amp module, transfer switch, sub panels install for the same price. From there I figured charge the DPUs from the lightning. I have a mini split and a midea u shaped AC unit. I was also quoted $42k for a 3.5kwh sun array with a 10kwh emphasis battery.

      @@ivansolares2448 Wow, that system quote is insane. I paid $3.00/W for a 9.6kW Enphase solar system including installation, for a total of $29K before Federal Rebate. (This was before I bought the Lightning.) If I added about $11K for the battery, I would be at $40K including installation, before rebate.
      If I needed continuous power, I would personally go for the Delta Pro 3 because our family could stay under the 4000W. I use a generator breaker and interlock, so I don't need a subpanel.

    You are 100% correct, we need industry standards, GM Energy is not ready for most home owners. I received a quote from GM Energy V2H Bundle which does not include the battery. Price was $7,299 + installation by Qmerit $11,404 = $18,703 for a home just built in 2023 with existing 7kWh solar, main 200v panel with two sub panels in the garage that are mostly empty. Already have dual EV charger installed in the garage that would need to be replaced with the GM EV charger included in the bundle. Qmerit went through every room in my house to audit all loads but refused to tell me what would not be backed up since 9.6kWh limit does not meet house load peak of 11.2kWh. I already own two electric vehicles, including 2024 Kia EV9 that has 99.8kWh battery and Kia states that V2H solution will be released in USA in 2024...still waiting. I also watched the video you repeated, at the end GM states that v2.0 which will reduce the complexity of their solution would be coming out by the end of 2025. I think I will wait a few more years before making a decision.

      Those prices are for 🤡 my quote for a powerwall 3 was cheaper. I’d wait on a house battery as the powerwall3 is also realistically too small. I guess you’ll keep the lights on but still fridge food spoils or the AC can only run 30 minutes during a heatwave. Personally I’ll wait for the powerwall5 if the powerwall4 doesn’t come with increased capacity.

    Oof. Since you reviewed GM's product via Kyle's channel, I wish you had given his channel a shoutout or at least tagged the original video, especially after an intro that seemed contentious. I've followed you both for years and hope to see some positive overlap, given the impact both of you have on us resi folks looking to learn more.

    Great content. I do have the same question in mind regarding how these different ecosystems may be cross-compatible in the future so that i could perhaps buy a Silverado EV, but plug it into my home with existing solar and Powerwalls as an additional energy source as additional back-up redundancy, i.e. WITHOUT the need to buy their proprietary hardware.

    Love the content, really lookong forward to bidrectional options. I have 1 to 1 net metering and am grid tied, would really like to get an option for grid down. Enphase kicked out their bidirectional charger until next year unfortunately.

    Thanks for your perspective, Joe. I generally like Kyle's various videos on EVs, but I think you missed an opportunity to point out a very misleading aspect of what Kyle was saying. He kept referring to "Tesla's system" -- implying that they offer some similar capability. In fact, Tesla seems to be dragging their feet on V2L/V2H/V2G. They don't currently offer any way to take advantage of the car's huge battery. They would prefer to sell you Powerwalls, rather than allowing you to use the car's battery. I appreciate that you pointed out that stationary storage is WAY OVERPRICED on a per-kWh basis, vs. EV batteries.

    I would give them a B- for this first try.
    Only being able to use it when the grid is down is a non-starter for most people.
    Hopefully the next version is a little more interesting.

    I disagree, 9.6KW would be fine for us as we have very high efficiency heat pumps, also a heat pump hot water tank, a dual combination heat pump dryer washer (115volt) and on order I have a Induction stove top to use with our oven is a high efficiency small 120vac convection steam oven. Our house was originally wired for electrical baseboard and hot water tank and a 240VAC clothes dryer, so this would be no issue for us.

    This kind off tec will We'll evolve quickly over the next ten years. I've been off the grid with a D.I.Y system for more ain't used now. I am fascinated to sit back and watch how this works out.

    Yeah GM should of Definitely spent some time in R&D for this system to integrate with Enphase, Solar Edge or PW3....
    Plus I am assuming GMs Inverter for Solar is just a version of a String Inverter. We use Inverters and technology today that is far superior than string tech....

    You had some ads foe PointGuard and their backup battery system which supports a V2X 12.5kw or 25kw DC vehicle battery backup. Can you get them to come on and give details about it? I've been digging but I can't find any details anywhere.

    It would be helpful for you to compare the options provided by the various makes (Ford, GM, Rivian) for folks who don't have a brand preference. Kyle of course could not do that in a video sponsored by GM. You are known for your comparisons.

    During a power outage, the last thing i want to do is drain my EV. What the heck. The f150 plug in hybrid or upcoming ram charger would be a better option for power outage.

    Tesla, GM and non vehicle vendors like Panasonic need to work out the standards for this IMMEDIATELY.
    Also inverters need double the capacity so the home batteries and vehicle can discharge at the same time together. 9.6kw is only half what the charging rate is. So doing it as i suggest would be 4x that. 38kw.

      The standard already exists: ISO standard 15118-2. The question is, does the GM (Chevy/Stellantis) EVSE use that standard so I can integrated it with my existing inverter/solar/battery system? Delta is the manufacturer of Ford's version of this. It wouldn't surprise me if this was also Delta.

    9.6 kw should be enough for anyone with common sense. Just don't run the heavy stuff.
    just need the basics, refrigerators, septic, well pump, Internet, garage door opener, and maybe a microwave but prob not.
