The whole front half of that Killing Joke album is absolutely killer. The beat in Implant from that album is my second favorite Grohl beat after Nirvana’s Milk It. Implant just pummels the whole way through in a way that sounds easier to play than it actually is.
Does anyone know who Steve Jordan is? If you don't, you should. When Smells like teen Spirit came out, Steve commented, that Dave is a funky drummer. Steve is known for having a killer groove, and he had great chops when he was younger. Prince invited Dave to jam and loved his heavy foot. Tom Petty was a fan too. It's not only about chops guys.
Hooray! This is so helpful. I was waiting for more Dave Grohl content. I'm really impressed with the move that goes from snare to low tom via a hand flick. Really nice visual of German/American to French.
As an aspiring drummer, I've been following Colm for years when I want to figure out how to play parts of songs. He's fantastic, no talking, just playing. Plus, he has the best sounding snare.
You missed the genius part of the Teen Spirit groove: Dave lays back on the crash at the start of the bar *a lot*, giving it a heavy punchy vibe that is very hard to replicate consistently! That's why it never sounds quite right when other drummers play it!!
fair enough! My default way of playing in the studio is to make sure the kick or snare hits BEFORE the crash (cymbals sound bad when they hit the compressor first) so I honestly didn't think to mention it.
@DimitriFantini I wasn't really criticising, it's just that a lot of people miss that about the groove and it's very clever of Dave 😊. Love your channel by the way, it's really helped my playing a lot!

Great video! I play over the whole Songs for the Deaf album to see how rusty I am, generally after not having played for some days... Sometimes it beats my ass, sometimes I pull it out. It makes you work on so many things: flams, singles, shuffle time, kick doubles, odd time signatures, power AND finesse
was interesting to see you play this kind of music. i definitely get what you're saying about his volume. it was shocking to see you force yourself to play something straightforward and fit his mold. it's kind of like you disappeared as a drummer for a second haha. normally, i could see you fitting danny carey's mold. do you think you'll do one about his drumming?
I don't believe Dave is referring to the intro of Teen Spirit when he refers to pulling them from Disco. More just the standard flams and kick in songs like "Come as you are" leading into the chorus.
Dave actually didn't write the snare roll and verses in a song for the dead. Its pretty much copied exactly from the song "slip it in" by black flag. Its still an amazing song tho.
True. I love Daves Grohls drumming on this album, but Gene Trautman, the former Q.O.T.S.A.-drummer, wrote most of the drum parts for the album -including "A Song For The Deaf".
Great job! Funny though you taught the moeller technique for the SLTS groove and demo'd how much it adds, but you didn't actually use it when you played the whole groove. Just straight quarter notes on the hi hat.
@@DimitriFantini I'm kind of a lefty playing a right-handed kit because I just can't play bass with my left foot so my right hand is weaker hence my flams sound better/more power leading with the left but if you don't mind me asking why are you doing in this case?
IDK why it made me laugh so hard that bro is dressed in a very Weezer way during the talking, but when he did the slide pedal technique demonstration, he was on jeans and boots, very manly and badass hahahaaha
I heard from a fellow musician that Dave grohl thought that back in 89 that I was one of his favorite DC drummers then... I was 18. I don't know if it's true or not, but dave never did it for me. Thanks dave.
I wanna say that was a humble brag, but it didn't seem very humble. Closer to a veiled insult, really. Anyway, your friend was prob just yanking your chain.
If you’re a drummer and can’t appreciate the feel of Dave’s touch on a drum set. Then I really have to question your ability and most of all your taste. He writes great drum lines. They always serve the song incredibly well.
You were right the first time, Dave is an average drummer at best. The only impressive thing is the opening of Queens of the Stone Age. However, for all new drummers, you don't have to play like Uncle Neil Peart to make a living as a drummer.
Exactly. He's good, but very far from being among the best players. If we take the "best drummer" criteria Matt Gartska talked about a few weeks ago, Dave wouldn't ever be quoted, no matter the genre.
You’re crazy, Dave is not an average drummer. You’ve clearly never toured and had to listen to every shitty opening local band along the way from city to city. Listen to his drumming on them crooked vultures. He is not average. He plays to the song. I’m sure that your I only play in my basement drum skills are unmatched. But you’re sounding dim
I made a pdf of all the notation here PLUS extra technique tips for you, grab it here: www.dimitrifantinidrums.com/davegrohlssecretdrumtechniques
The fact that Dave Ghrol gives credit where credit is due...like how he got some of his ideas from Funk drummers like Tony Thompson and the Gap Band
definitely!
Wait til you hear about Dave and William Goldsmith...
Dave’s patterns on Killing Joke’s 2003 album are his pinnacle. Particularly: The Death & Resurrection Show, Total Invasion, Asteroid, Zennon.
ok shoot I missed this one! thanks! any others?

Colm Dowling (here on YT) plays the best Song for the Dead drum cover I've seen, absolutely note perfect! I want that lad in my band, lol!

You’re a great teacher dude. This was an enjoyable watch.
Glad it was helpful!
My God, man...how do you play with your hats so low!? Good video, Dave Grohl is the reason I started playing drums. Love the man
Thanks so much!
He probably doesn't use the side of his sticks on them, only top playing.
I definitely use the side of my sticks.
Your floor tom sound perfect🤘🔥
Thanks!
Really good breakdown with dude this was super detailed... subbed
thanks Jack, welcome!!!!
To the whipping motion, Matt Halpern is a great example. Looks quite loose when he plays but so smooth.

Dave Grohl drumming on With Teeth from Nine Inch Nails is the most solid and groovy, what a fucking legend.
His drum part as the devil in tenacious d and the pick of destiny has to be my favorite from him
noted! maybe I'll have to do a follow up
I like your drum sound!
thank you!! really smashed the drum mix for this one to match the songs better haha
It's crushed

But if you don't swing your long hair all over the place when you drum it, it doesn't look like it at all.
