In this case what would happen to countries like Latvia, Finland, Romania if they were neutral countries? russia would probably march through them to reach Lisboa and the armies in between. Latvia, Finland and Romania are NATO countries with installed rocket systems and so on? now they are an strategic target russia has to bomb first to reach Europe. Maybe they would be conquered some day without NATO membership maybe not. Maybe they will get nuked someday for NATO membership maybe not. Only time will tell what led to peace and what to death.
Instead building bridges with neighbouring countries in 21 century Putin and his mafia cronies prefer to wage wars to move oublic opinion from the theft they are conducting. To build as bigger yachts as possible. Of course far away from mother Russia.
It was literally created to oppose Russia and for the US to hold power over Europe, that's the entire point of NATO since it's creation, even before Putin was born.
NATO expanded already when Putin wasn't even in power towards Russia. So your statement is absolute moronic. Also answere me that, what would the USA do if Mexico just stepped into an alliance with Russia?
The usa is a bigger threat to russia than vice-versa. So if you ask americans about threatening russia... the answers will be even harder. Not even sure what's up with people going full double-standards mode when talking about russia.

Some wise young people you have in Russia I wait for them for their majority views to become Russia's policy and we can all enjoy lots of cultural exchanges in friendship at the government level. I feel the friendship people to people is already present and old style politics of personal power over interest of the people will be replace by the We the People. Thanks!
These Russians are inspiring for their respect for others, but unfortunately in almost every country the worst people rise to power regardless of the wider population. In most democracies they don't kill or imprison people, but are still pretty corrupt. This why popularists can tap into discontent so easily but unfortunately they care even less about doing the right thing than the established parties.
As a Finn i find the thought of Finland joining Russia instead of Nato funny 😂 Personally i'd prefer neutrality in normal circumstances but today it's almost impossible considering the situation.
As a russian I always liked that about Finland and its people they are open-minded and as simple as we are. There’s no reason for common people like us to fight over nothing. Putin is not my president and I’m really sorry that this war is affecting common people’s attitude towards each other. I wish this never happened but sadly there’s nothing I can do to fix that.
As a Finn I was a little nervous to press play on this video but by the end of the video I had a smile on my face. I feel like I want to to go hug 90% of the people in this video because they are warm-hearted and intelligent people who think for themselves and don't buy the propaganda about Nato being a threat to Russia.
If NATO is no threat to Russia, what is the purpose of NATO and why does NATO expand towards the Russian border? Is it constantly moving towards Russia for love of all things Russian? Does NATO deploy American tactical nuclear weapons closer to Russia because they want to be friends?
@@ttblade The question is why do so many of Russia's neighbors want to join Nato? We Finns used to call them hysterical and not understanding Russians but now they proved us they were right and we were naive

Most of the people's reply here is like: "Do you think it is ok if your neighbor country joins anti-Russian union? No, I think that's great!" wtf? Young people in Russia seem quite naive...
Russia really has great potential, but the ruling elite is dragging everyone down. It's so good to see the newer younger generation has at least some normal thinking people. It gives me hope for the future.
Not only the elite but also older (de)generation who is brainwashed since the USSR and is continuously brainwashed by the Putin's government and media. It is all the same in every ostblock country, that irrational nationalism and sentiment for a "good old days" of soviet era is like a cancer. Those people are pretty much zombies when it comes to decision about who should lead the country. I know it firsthand, I'm slovak and right now, after exact two months of that horror on the Ukraine, 28% (!) of slovak citizens think that USA and NATO are aggressors. Before the war on Ukraine almost every second Slovak considered Russia as a FRIEND. After 40 years of communism, after 1968....they have memory like a goldfish, same goes to average GenX russian.
I meant "the grass is greener in her neighbor's garden" But yeah, her country has always been maneuvered by external forces. From outside or from inside those who live in that region will be targeted for the season. The irony is she as well as most young ones believe in the mercifulness and coherence of the West. They are blindsided by the hype of the wastelands to sense their own annihilation.
These are great! To get a take for how Russian people feel. Enlightening-- we're all so similar in our varied views of what's going on. Thanks for making these great vids! Salute!
Thank you for this video. The answers are very different than your other videos about Ukraine. It seems like Russians have a lot more respect for Finland than they do Ukraine. The other thing I notice is so many Russians say, ‘I cant do anything about it’, referring to the acts of Russia’s government. It must be very conflicting personally to live like that. Being part of the system, and thinking you have no effect on it. It makes me sad that ordinary Russians feel this way.
To be frank, people never had a say in anything, regardless of the country. It's especially evident now, with protests and worsening of living conditions, especially in the US and Europe
Sadly, as a result of generations' worth of underfunded public schools, social programs, and concerted efforts by some to restrict the average citizens' right to vote, there are many voices in the US expressing the exact same sentiment. Apathy is universal under autocratic and even democratic leadership given the power of targeted propaganda. However, history can teach us. If we only listen to it....and when it isn't silenced or rewritten by some. Case in point.... Google.... "United States economic success by presidential administration." Then....to make a finer point.... "Criminal indictments and prosecutions by presidential administration." All stats and numbers are documented, verified, and can be found in the National Archives, and the Library of Congress. Our choice of leadership matters a great deal to the quality of life and freedom. History doesn't lie.
It really is sad that Russians think this way, but it seems to me that it's a deliberate part of the political culture. I suppose many Russians are simply encouraged not to think about politics, and others who do think about politics need to hide that fact to avoid getting arrested. I live in a democracy and I'm expected to have an opinion, whether it's an intelligent or a stupid one. I can choose whether to vote or not, but I know that if I do vote, that vote will actually be counted for what it was.
lt could also be a way to protect themselfs. To not to say their view in a public interview. They could be burning down military buildings and then say "I am apolitical" in a public setting.
I've learned quite a lot in this video: apparently it's more secure to be on ur own if someone attacks you than having a heavyweight boxing champ protecting you from the attacker. Thanks wise russian man
It's important to note that the Russian war of aggression against it's neighbor has not only acted as a catalyst for Finns to apply for NATO membership, but it has done so to the extent it's actually the Finnish people demanding the leadership that we join NATO. This is truly a grass roots phenomenon, as most leaders, including our PM were opposed to joining NATO, even after the war started. This demonstrates to Russia and everybody that here is the people that appoint the leaders and not the other way around.
No country has been pressured into joining NATO. At least not since the end of the Cold War. Every country that joined wanted to join because they had experienced Russian aggression. The question was always if the NATO membership would unanimously agree to it. That's where arm twisting has happened, getting other NATO members to agree to countries like the Baltic states membership applications.
I don't want to retype the text, just copy it here. 1. In Ukraine, 8 years before the war, there is a genocide against Russians and residents of eastern Ukraine. And also in Ukraine, dissidents are being destroyed. 2. Ukraine bombed Donbass, civilians for 8 years, just because they wanted autonomy and not live by the new Kyiv rules that violated human rights. 3. Ukraine itself provoked the war with its disgusting behavior. It is not for nothing that there are a lot of pro-Russian-minded people in Ukraine among local Ukrainians. 4. The media simply does not show you what happened in Ukraine for 8 years and what they did with the Donbass. Even the example with Crimea, they won’t show you the truth that the vast majority of people there are for Russia, but you call it the occupation of Crimea. How can you occupy a territory where more than 80% is for Russia? Moreover, the inhabitants of the DPR, LPR, Crimea did not want to live under the new Kyiv government, since this government violated their human rights. From here the war began.

Finland and Sweden joining NATO upends centuries of Russian policy in keeping the Baltic open. Sweden's whole policy of neutrality was meant to de-escalate tensions in the region. The Winter and Continuation Wars were fought to keep the Baltic open and to defuse a threat. This is a strategic blunder of the highest order for Russia. The Baltic States being in NATO are one thing. And so is Kaliningrad being surrounded by NATO. It is an enclave and not vital to Russia. But having two of the more powerful NATO members right on the doorstep of St. Petersburg and able to seal of the Baltic? There is a reason Russia has devoted treasure and blood to keeping both Sweden and Finland neutral since Finland gained independence. Another one of Putin's grave miscalculations.
@@Battlestar540 There are no ethnic Germans there really, it has little value to Germany. It would cost 50 billion Euro just to clean up the toxic and nuclear waste from the military sites.
Winter war was fought to defuse a threat? Are you talking from the Russian POV? Winter war created the reason for Finland to ally with Germany, aka creating the threat to Russia. I could also argue that it was not a good look what happened in Soviet-controlled Baltic states; First they gave in to Soviet demands and gave them a few military bases, the next the Baltic states were occupied and natives were sent off to gulag to die. You don't defuse threats to yourself by doing this, unless you manage to crush all opposition. You just make yourself a threat to others, and thus you have your neighbours seeking allies. This cycle will never break if Russian political culture won't change. I'm not holding my breath..

It's called a deterrent. Being allied with the greatest military alliance in the world would make a russian attack suicide, and putler understands that. This is just about limiting the options in putlers zero sum game, and the reason why he concentrates his lust for territory to countries not in NATO.
These ratings are useless because they compiled by the western institutions. For example Australia is in the top 10 most democratic nations, yet you can go to jail if you are not going to give your decryption key(password) to the authorities, it is written in law, basically in Australia the most fundamental things of western judicial system such as assumption of innocence before proven otherwise, and not to testify against yourself no longer works. You don't find such laws in russia, yet.
Russian GDP per capita is nowhere near 30k. Possibly adjusted by purchasing power parity it could be close, but that is only due to the fact that everything is so cheap there.
This is easy to say from a sheltered place. I would say your same statement a different way: "I would hope that if I were a Russian person, I would have the same courage to express my own opinion as I do now as a Finnish person." Opinions are cheap in the West and expensive in Russia.

That’s the main problem with Russia today: people don’t care about politics. While I do agree that western overpoliticization is also a problem, not giving a sh*t about how your country is ran is what lead to this situation in the first place. If the people don’t care about politics, their leaders will make less and less efforts to do what’s good for said people.
Just like in any other country. People just live, study, work and go about their business. Let's be honest, few people were interested in politics BEFORE Russia's special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, people in other countries not only do not know why all this happened, but they do not even try to figure it out. Because? Because they were never interested in it
The Russian school system is aimed at cultivating apolitical citizens. A person who is interested in politics is a threat to the current regime, so it is risky for such to express their point of view in public. From Finland here, basically nobody here wanted to join NATO two months ago. And not for many decades before that. Ukraine completely changed the conversation. But I'm glad to see there's so many smart people in Russia. Finland will never attack Russia, our small nation has just become frightened and want better defense. We most likely will not take nukes on our ground. Economic relations can go back to normal once Putin's regime is not in power anymore, NATO doesn't need to affect that
I'm an American, and I would prefer whether Finland is inside NATO or outside of NATO to matter very little. This is the case of Switzerland, Austria and Ireland. These democracies are not threatened in anyway by their neighbors and are neutral for historic reasons. I would wish for Finland that same level of peace. Unfortunately there is a credible threat to Finland. The current regime in the Kremlin has a problem with military adventurism and abusing it's neighbors. The Finnish people shouldn't have to alter their preferred foreign or domestic policies out of fear of what Putin might do. NATO isn't perfect and has some downsides, but it's pretty clear the only thing Putin respects is Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty. If that is the case, I would like the Finnish people to enjoy that protection. We will see what they choose.

@@yototrash as far as I understand, finland was part of the russian empire up until the revolution. so, if "russians shall be ruled by russia" is an argument, one could say that this is the same for finland and ukraine. if the counterargument is "this is different, the finns speak their own language" - then a) russia always had many (ethnic) minority languages AFAIK, and b) there is no reason all the speakers of one language need to be governed by the same state. e.g. english is spoken in the us, canada, uk, australia, nz. German is spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland. And some of these countries even share friendly land borders and trade with each other. Nobody needs Putin, especially no russian speaker.
After watching some of your videos, I see a pattern where many say "I'm apolitical" or "I am not interested in politics". Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that is their way of distancing themselves of the war and repression. When speaking of Russia, there is no politics. There is Tsar Putin and his power games with neighbouring countries. For the rest of the world looking at the war, no one is saying "oh it's just politics, i'm not interested in that". No, this is real life, it affects us all.
Nah. Russian reality is constructed in such a way that the system alienates the individual from political and even economic subtleties. That is why many, especially young people, have no opinion on these matters. They think it's complicated, it's none of their business, and that there are other people who will decide everything for them. And most people of the older generation, 45+, have a very distorted view of reality. Most of them have never been to other countries. Their Internet skills are only good enough to access the local social network, which is heavily censored. These are ideal targets for propaganda. They can be indoctrinated into almost anything.
@@Xiao-ko7sc The younger Russian population actually is more likely to seek independent sources of info (e.g., RUclips, Telegram [these are still available despite Russia's crackdown on most other sources of info that are not Russian government-owned]). So it was surprising to see such apathy from many of the younger interviwees. Maybe their "neutral" stance reflects fear of consequences for expressing any dissention from state-approved points of view. Thankfully I live in a country where I could freely express my opinion & peacefully protest my disapproval for the U.S. war aganst Iraq without being arrested for expressing my views against my country's actions. The video made it clear to me that Russians who object to Finland joining NATO don't understand EU politics at all. It won't hurt Finland economy since EU already cut ties with Russia. Not joining on the other hand, makes nobody willing to risk investing in Finland. This is just one example.
Its not just that... since russia is getting more and more aggressive the last few decades under putin... its neighboring countries have to pay higher interest for example when taking a loan, cause those nations are more risky to invest in (as you said). Membership in EU and/or NATO might reduce that effect, zero it out or you might get it back to be slightly positive... depends. So its basically posion for EVERY money transaction your nation does, if your neighbor is a warmonger.
Yeah. And what can you do by ”maintaining good relations” while still wanting to be a western country at the same time. It’s really either Nato or being a puppet state like Belarus.

You can’t blame any neighbour country of Russia that they would feel the need to protect themselves. Russia has shown very clearly that it is dangerous to be its neighbour

The best argument for the necessity of NATO is that Russia has invaded every single neighbor at one time or another, the notable exception is that it has never invaded any country while that country was a NATO member.
Do Russians never ask themselves *_why_* all their neighbours are desperate to join NATO? Sometimes it feels like Russia is one of those old men who enters the highway in the wrong direction and then starts screaming that *_everyone else_* is going the wrong way. edit: actually to my great surprise several people in this video seem to understand what's up. this is a quite refreshing change from the normal videos of Russians complaining that NATO is "annexing" Russia's neighbours.
This was an interesting video. The Russians didn't seem to be very worried about Finland joining NATO, because they didn't see Finland to be a real threat to Russia. Som were worried about nuclear missiles to be placed to Finland, which I don't think to happen. As a Finn I think, that we are enough safe under the nuclear umbrella of NATO. We don't need nuclear missiles to be placed here. But we might need one small NATO military base here to verify, that an attack to Finland would immediately be an attack to every NATO members. We Finns don't hate the Russians. In a gallup, which was made after this recent war had started, the amount of those Finns, who liked the Russians, was nearly three times higer than the amount of those, who disliked them. Almost 3/4 of the Finns said, that they respect the Russian cultur. It looks like, that Russians don't hate Finns either, despite this NATO membership. I just wonder, how these same people would have answered, if the questions would have been about Ukraine and not Finland. The Russians clearly understand and accept, that Finland is not a part of the Russian world. But for Ukraine the situation is quite different, and that is one reason, why Putin attacked to Ukraine.
I mean if Finland loves Russia, they can always remain out of NATO. Membership is not done at gunpoint. Ofc I'd you suffer a fate like Ukraine, understand no one is coming.
“Finland is a sovereign state, so it’s up to them to make their own decisions.” Hmmm, last I looked Ukraine is a sovereign state as well. I wonder how many of them genuinely realize the sovereignty of their neighbors means next to nothing to their government.

When I lived in India, the locals explained to me a similar thing. Some cultures don’t seem to place the same value on human life as we generally do in the West. How much time/energy/money are we willing to put into something like traffic safety, for example. Some cultures might consider that a waste. Like it’s easier to just have more babies. The comment in the video simply meant that the West is not suicidal enough to start a nuclear holocaust. In contrast, she seems to feel Russia might give less weight to the cost in human life when weighing its decisions.

A Finn here. Finland is not joining NATO completely out of blue, but the option to apply for NATO membership if the security situation changes in Europe has been in the government programme for years. Finnish Defense Forces are NATO compatible and it has regularly trained with other member states for many years. The truth is that from the perspective of Russia very little changes if Finland becomes a member officially. If Finland's NATO membership was an insurmountable issue for Russian political leadership they would have taken an action ages ago. The war in Ukraine is not about NATO but about Russkiy Mir - Russia sees that Belarus, Ukraine and Russia form one entity that should be politically and economically closely connected. Ukrainians on the other hand want closer ties with the West, because they want to move away from authoritarianism and political system based around corruption, nepotism and all that. They want allies that can be trusted and are accountable. For Russian political leadership it is essentially an emotional issue, whereas for Ukraine it is a practical one. It is a huge shame the situation has now become what it is, because Russia could have achieved all its ambitions simply by tackling the problems at home first and focusing on the development of economy and civil society. It would have been a natural course, because the deep cultural ties the countries share. However from the perspective of Finland, because we are already a member of European Union and in that sense not really a neutral country anymore, it would be better if we were protected by the article 5 like basically all other EU countries. I think Finns somewhat like the idea of not being fully part of the West nor the East, but continuing sitting on the fence during turbulent times like these might mean that you eventually fall on either side, so it is better to make the choice yourself rather than wait that someone else does it for you. We are politically and economically closer to the West, so that is the side we would rather land on if we have to choose.
That's why we respect Finns, sovereignty is not an empty word to you. I hope Finland will be able to hold the situation under control, as now further escalation is not up to Russia to decide, my hope is that after this ceremonial joining of nato the rest will remain the same, if Finland agrees to host NATOs/US facilities close to border that will provoke Russia to very aggressive reaction (most likely economical), let's hope it won't happen.

You can be imprisoned literally for anything, including a single picket with an empty piece of paper (true case 🙃). That is why (not being rude) you have no right to accuse these people of apoliticality, without knowing thoroughly how the regime works. But I sincerely hope the war will change it.

I continue to be respectful towards the 80K Russians living in Finland, joining NATO will not affect that. These videos make all this even more evident, for anyone who never visited Russia. Moscow and St. Petersburg are filled with educated, smart business oriented people. Our countries had great relations for decades. WW2 was put to past. Putin seems to have sunken in some kind of paranoid, alternate reality. Like he can't let go of the KGB past and cold war, as he realizes he's becoming old.
Stalin didn't believe that Finland will not join Germany after war begins and attacked preemptively, if he didn't do that Finland could even have become Russian ally in ww2 if Germany attacked them instead, the entire history could have turned differently, and even if not, it would not be any worse than what it was in reality.
