I wonder if, when Ian Tyson wrote this song, he knew it would become one of the greatest songs of all time. And nobody does it better than Johnny Cash, the perfect voice and soul for a masterpiece such as this.
Ian Tyson said he wrote this song in twenty minutes after he and the love of his life separated. Although many have covered this, no one did it better than Johnny Cash. RIP Mr. Cash and Mr. Tyson. I like to think of ya'll adding your voices to the Heavenly Choir.
Cracked voice, hurting and old, this man moves me. And I am not a country music fan, but Johnny Cash carries the world and the essence of life in his being.
Bless Johnny for giving all of us such a journey of music. My first 45: "Sunday Morning Coming Down" My second 45: "Man in Black".... He haunts me in ways I can't express, and that is good.
Love the way he delivers a condemed, though simplistic resolution to the lyrics of this classic. If you don't 'get' Johnny Cash you got a hole in your soul..RIP
To those who argue in the presence of this performance - show some respect and listen to the music. Wanna fight? Meet each other in the street. Johnny Cash deserves a better audience. Thanks for your trouble in posting this music, acashfan1. You deserve a better audience, too.
Oh My God.... How wonderful is this... wherever you are Sir thank you for invaluable contribution to my musical taste.... You should now be teaching the angels how to sing. Your life was worth every single day on this earth.
WUMB's Dave Palatier said this is one of the great contemporary folk songs. He's right. Until I heard this today, my fav version was by the Chad Mitchell Trio. I dislike love songs but this one and Dylan's "Lay, Lady, Lay" are my favs. I love this because the narrator recognizes the hopelessness of the situation because he knows himself and the woman so well. The dying Johnny Cash gives the song the emotional grounding it deserves. I regret that I never saw Cash perform live.
Terry Murphy he actually has a song from the early 60s called "the girl in saskatoon ". If that ain't cool enough for a Canadian connection i don't know what is. Other than the fact he fished many times in La Ronge and some other northern lakes too
i've loved this song (johnny's version) since the first time i heard it. the pictures you've added make it even more touching. you can hear in his voice he was getting on a bit but i love this stage in his career as you said his voice was very pure.
Possibly this version of this song sung by Cash one of my top three ever best songs have heard in my life. Aine 💕💕💕💕💕 Am crying just now. It’s THAT good.
I have heard John Denver sing this in the early 70's. It sounds beautiful with Johnny's voice of time added to it. The photos are such a wonderful walk down memory lane. Thanks for creating this for us to enjoy...so much appreciated!
Johnny's songs toward the end gradually were not country music any more. I can feel a new style of music was born. Those in music art should develop what Johnny Cash left for us, a new and beautiful style of music. Johnny's music will never die.
I have been a huge Ian Tyson and Johnny Cash song for years. Nice to hear their work come together like this. Just Johnny's voice and some simple accompaniment..very nice!
Well done! Wonderful collection of photos. I've always loved this great Ian Tyson song and John's version is amazing (considering his physical condition in 2003). Thanks.
They were good real people- ever run into people like this you know they have felt those winds that chilled their souls- but their souls rest now in God's warm heart-have a good life yall and dont worry bout tomorrow- enjoy today and always have plenty of firewood nearby-
Great artist ... so many beautifull songs from him as this one Why isn't he better known in Europe and that media do not talk about him ? Amazing how it looks so easy for him , so pure , so deep in feelings . We miss you John as we miss your wife June
Richard Kalwa imo ian and sylvia's version is the only what the matters, it is the most recognized canadian song other then the national anthem...when you here the intro melody you know you are listening to the heart of canadian song writing history..though johnny cash and neil young both do ok versions neither can stand toe to toe with ian tyson
Do you ever know when to just keep your shut and respect the music legends. Johnny Cash is the most talented singer of all time. My favorite singer, and I will not allow you to insult him like that. Thank you very much. You should be very ashamed of yourself for saying something like that. I am disappointed in you for saying that. So would a lot of people.
His voice is very pure, it is honest, true, and pure. Unless your blind or deaf....I'd agree, but if you are neither then you are wrong. Too many people don't know the REAL Johnny Cash.
What a song....What a Video....What a Legend.....If there is a heaven I hope Johnny is there to open the gates for me.....We cover some of his songs love to know what you think.
It`s obvious that this is a recording from his latest years, but he performs it beautifully. as does Neil Young. My favorite is Bobby Bare, who set the standard for this song.
its said that this was the very first song that Ian Tyson ever wrote. Quite a debut. Johnny really captures the essence and emotion embedded in the song.
I wonder if, when Ian Tyson wrote this song, he knew it would become one of the greatest songs of all time. And nobody does it better than Johnny Cash, the perfect voice and soul for a masterpiece such as this.
Well, Maybe The Four Brothers
Neil Young?

So many undiscovered Cash songs that send me to a dark yet beautiful place in my mind full of reminiscence.
+dazmanshears Not his song but he sure makes it his own .
Was this song from his last album?
Ian and Sylvias version is far better than Neil Youngs
Nic Lawson - Ian Tyson wrote it.
@@arniewince7133 American V , a hundred highways.
He left this world
But never left our hearts
His songs will live in our hearts till the end
Rest in peace legend 🙏
Cracked voice, hurting and old, this man moves me. And I am not a country music fan, but Johnny Cash carries the world and the essence of life in his being.
even old, weathered, sick, and dying, he's beautiful
Heartbreaking. Beautiful. It's like he's saying "goodbye" to all of us. Thank you.
Johnny Cash had a passion, and he was able to die doing what he loved. I wish we could all be lucky enough to do that. RIP Johnny Cash.
Bless Johnny for giving all of us such a journey of music.
My first 45: "Sunday Morning Coming Down"
My second 45: "Man in Black"....
He haunts me in ways I can't express, and that is good.
Do you still keep them ? Fantastic memories! Greetings CD
So beautiful. How can 5 people dislike this? Thanks Johnny. RIP.
I like Johnny's singing most during his final years. Poignant.
Love the way he delivers a condemed, though simplistic resolution to the lyrics of this classic.
If you don't 'get' Johnny Cash you got a hole in your soul..RIP
Beautiful song love u Johnny

Thanks for your trouble in posting this music, acashfan1. You deserve a better audience, too.
fills my eyes with tears... great version!
i have never heard this song sung so tenderly as this.....love ya johnny
For me Bobby Bare nailed it - but it was the 1rst cover I heard anyway and that always kind of "sticks", if you know what I mean ;-)
Great version of Ian & Sylvia hit from 1963,a Neil Young favorite!
Johnny, why'd you die on us boy? You were supposed to be immortal....
Sometimes I listen to him and forget that he's dead.......
Oh My God.... How wonderful is this... wherever you are Sir thank you for invaluable contribution to my musical taste.... You should now be teaching the angels how to sing. Your life was worth every single day on this earth.
you are always in our mind.R.I.P.,you and June.
I miss him since 2003 !

I love this song, thank you for uploading it. Best song from the American Recordings albums next to Hurt.
Listen to this song for 35 yrs before Johnny did it he really makes it his own cool he did a Canadian tune .
Terry Murphy he actually has a song from the early 60s called "the girl in saskatoon ". If that ain't cool enough for a Canadian connection i don't know what is. Other than the fact he fished many times in La Ronge and some other northern lakes too

Ian Tyson of Ian and Sylvia wrote this song and first recorded it. Ian said this was his favorite cover of it and I agree.
The Neil Young/Nicolette Larson version is better.
@@Danimal1577 No.
outstanding picture collection. Many thanks.
A man.A guitarr, A song.
Wonderful photo collection.
Simple perfection of song and inimitable voice. No more needed. Just the guitar would have been sufficient accompaniment, but still perfect.
I hope, You rest in peace, Old Johnny. And Your songs go with me until my days will end. Thanks for all. Dirk fron Germany
Johnny's songs toward the end gradually were not country music any more. I can feel a new style of music was born. Those in music art should develop what Johnny Cash left for us, a new and beautiful style of music.
Johnny's music will never die.
Its almost spoken word country folk.
He was the best ever!!!
RIP Johnny & June
Sure he was and still is. John R CASH!!! /CD
Best cover of this song
I have been a huge Ian Tyson and Johnny Cash song for years. Nice to hear their work come together like this. Just Johnny's voice and some simple accompaniment..very nice!
THis is one unique artist......been listening to him for over 30 years.
RIP Ian Tyson 🇨🇦
So moving and such a nice pictures. Thanks very much for posting!
We played this song at my dad's funeral. I think he would have appreciated that.
Ian Tyson of Ian and Sylvia who wrote and recorded this song (it was a big hit in the 60's) said this is his favorite cover of the song.
Yes, there are good versions by Bobby Bare and Neil Young too.
*Amen.*
🥇🎄😪
John R CASH owns this song on so many levels. Thank you John R CASH! /CD
Perfect song for JC at that time in his career, he could pick the best!!
still obcessed with him. johnny is the truth
@delorme42 It's nice, but I still prefer Ian Tyson's original. Tyson rates this as the best cover of any of his songs, though.
Well done! Wonderful collection of photos. I've always loved this great Ian Tyson song and John's version is amazing (considering his physical condition in 2003). Thanks.
Yeah not heard J Cash sing this ....real fab but if you love this song listen to the Seekers doin it .
"the man in black," will be sorely missed , all the so-called outlaws will, coz, you,ll never see their like , again!"
what about willie and hank jrbut I grant u johny the best
Hmmm. He's altered the melody, swapped the musical phrases around. I love Johnny Cash, but geez!
Can anyone tell me where I can get this by Nobody. Apparently it's better than Johnny Cash.
Yeah!! why not??? I think unique is the term!! Like it or not he owned them all in his own special way!!!
R.I.P. Mr. Cash
What a guy
Make no mistake, Mr. Cash was an incredible singer / song writer, but I gotta say Neil Young's version w/ Emmylou et al, is better.
Brett - Nicolette Larson sang on Neil’s version. Beautiful voice reminiscent of Emmy Lou to be sure.
Almost as good as Waylon´s..but still ver very good
@adoptfromarescue about a month after June died and a week before he died.
Ian Tyson can rest in peace that Johnny sang his masterpiece.
from stardust we return like this immortal we all will live sometime in the great gig in the sky
This song makes me cry, but at the same time, I can't stop listening to it.
They were good real people- ever run into people like this you know they have felt those winds that chilled their souls- but their souls rest now in God's warm heart-have a good life yall and dont worry bout tomorrow- enjoy today and always have plenty of firewood nearby-
Johnny is zoals wijn . beter door de jaren heen.
Great song by a great perfomer !!
Nice video-compilation too :-)
Johnny R.I.P
Greetings,

I care not for who wrote or how it was to be written, but how it is to be sang; filled with emotion and feeling.
Oh Johnny, I remember grabbing your boot at craven, and you just looked down at me and winked...I will always love you!!
So lucky!
@acashfan1 but it was released on July 4, 2006.

Amazing how it looks so easy for him , so pure , so deep in feelings . We miss you John as we miss your wife June
I agree. My favorite cover is Neil Young's.
Richard Kalwa The version that counts is Canada's Ian & Sylvia, recorded in 1963. Ian wrote this song.
+Mark Abbey The most recognized Canadian song ? I doubt that .

For delormed42....you should try Neil Young's version. That's the one I like best even though I grew up hearing Bobby Bare's. ~~enjoy!

John was at his best at the end of his life. The same as all of us.Why not allways? We are all as frail as Johnny ever was.
I love you Johnny !
Beautiful but sad

@delorme42 iTunes?
I have known this song for over 40 years. Bobby Bare brought it to the country music world. I love Ian's version too, but Johnny Cash nailed this one.
its said that this was the very first song that Ian Tyson ever wrote. Quite a debut. Johnny really captures the essence and emotion embedded in the song.
Johnny and Ian were good friends a little known fact
@acashfan1
it would of been great to hear him and neil young sing this together that would of been a moment in time
