  • When Dr. Verghese, professor for the theory and practice of medicine, meets a new patient, it is often the story of the person’s life that most informs their interactions. Sometimes even if he cannot cure, he can still heal.
Abraham Verghese is a critically acclaimed, best-selling author and a physician with an international reputation for his focus on healing in an era when technology often overwhelms the human side of medicine. In February 2014, he received a Heinz Award from Teresa Heinz and the Heinz Family Foundation. The Heinz awards given annually celebrate the enduring spirit of hope and the power of innovation.

I once long ago had a doctor that changed my life and was as great as this man, his name was Gordon B McFarland Jr. Surgeon at Ochsner in New Orleans, La. He died in 2009 but lives on in my heart and soul. Dr. Verghese is such a gift to see and hear speak.

Dr Verghese is such an inspiration! Not only is he a renowned Doctor, he practices medicine as if it were a craft, a special skill that we are all privileged to practice. One day I wish I can match even a fraction of his passion for practicing the art of medicine.

Very few Doctors realize the great healing they can do. A lot try to heal by fear and urgency, but as the illness is cured the mind remains sick. Some very few, heal with hope and encourage with LIFE and even if they are at deaths' doorstep they are full of life and have lived enough and passed through with courage and dignitay intact.

Thank you for a beautiful talk. I love the way that Chekhov met his end with acceptance and Grace. Just hoping we can all meet our ends in the same fashion with much joy before that end comes.
