  • So today I've gone to the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway. A Railway that is literally on my doorstep that I can hear my home every Sunday when their operatingnseason is open, been here many times and never disappoints!
Such an underrated railway fo its uniqueness of being the paper mill railway that used to also serve Ridham Dock 24/7 tonnes of paper was shipped by boat or rail via the mainline, my vist was on the day of "Behind The Scenes" and I certainly got to see everything and hear their plans for the future (thankyou for having me!). The volunteers make this railway, everyone is so helpful and happy to be there. The people are the Railway.

Thousands of people go through Sittingbourne Station not knowing there is a heritage railway just across the road and is so easy to access. It saddens me that Southeastern won't add to the tannoy stating "alight here for the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway" when approaching Sittingbourne as this would majorly help the railway to get recognised as it does with the East Kent Railway.
The railway is open every Sunday from Easter but timetables change due to events so alway check what their timetable is as they could be running earlier than 1pm!
    .
This railway is always asking for volunteers no matter the age (above 16) wether you have spare time or want to keep yourself busy this railway is the place for you. If you feel like a change in scenery you can contact them via Facebook or contact them via email.
    .
You check out there upcoming events & news via their website below:

    .
Next week's event is "Jack The Station Cat"
"Jack the Station Cat returns for the launch of the latest book - ‘Jack the Station Cat Sorts it Out’ - on Sunday 28th April. Jack will be roaming Kemsley Down, keeping an eye out for the Railway’s own wild cats no doubt! Jack’s tales will be read by one of the illustrators of the books, Roger Dilley."

Like to point out that the Chatterdeen and upnor railway coaches of which 4 are at the SKLR. 2 of them are at the Welshpool railway, Locomotives did NOT do 40mph on the bowaters railway yes they was "thrashed" however Monarch Now at Welshpool was the only Locomotive to haul 14 waggons during bowaters days all other locos were limited either due to their size or weight as not all of the Locomotives could work the full line from Ridham to Sittingbourne. The 5 inch guage railway is the 2nd version of this at kemsley and the first version was installed around 2006 and removed around 2008 and had 2 diesel Locomotive and one steam Locomotive owned by members at the time. Also I am a former member and former Museum creator at SKLR
