MINIATURE TRAINS On The Isle Of Sheppey? Yes Please! | A TRUE HIDDEN GEM
So today I have headed to the very underrated Bartons Point Coastal Park for you guessed it.. another miniature railway! Sheppey Model Engineering & Model Society has existed since 1978 and has continued to thrive with a vast array of ages volunteering to help run it, its a fantastic railway that needs to be put on the map!
I was astounded at how well run it is and how helpful the volunteers are and also the variety of locos from narrow gauage to standard gauge as you'll see in the video.
.
So if your thinking of joining because you have an interest or have 3.5" or 5" Gauge loco you contact them on their facebook page or headed over to their website fir more info below:

So this week another special opportunity arisen when the Maidstone Miniature Railway held their Friday Night Steam Up with running the track in reverse. Very unique that they rarely do this & was given the opportunity to have a drive on a 5" LNER V3 with 5 trolleys attached and a steep gradient out the station (which was very tricky for someone inexperienced as i am. Thankyou to @TomsWorkshop42...

FORMER TRAIN SIDINGS - COUNTRY PARK?!?!
A nice video showcasing the club and locos. From one of the owners of Polly 1 😂 This is a hobby for all ages, I started building Polly 1 at the age of 13. It is an original JGS Clarke model (with some of our own upgrades) and I remember visiting his workshop in Wales to collect some castings.
What that is amazing! Lovely little loco I don't think I've ever seen a polly 1 before, but glad it's helping put your club on the map and you enjoyed it!
Lots of fun to be had by all!
Very underrated place! I would highly recoomend if you love steam trains like I do, as plenty of variety if different types of loco from narrow gauage to standard gauge!
No way! Where is this on the island?
Bartons Point Coastal Park, I forgot to mention this! 🤦
Number one like!!!!
BBQ and trains. All you need now is a beer! Looks like great fun.
I wish had a doom bar in hand at the time but was great fun as always!
The triple camera thing makes this quite difficult to watch.
Apologies there hhf9152, I'm only using my phone camera to film! At somepoint I'll be upgrading to a proper camera and will use my phone to do portrait filming, I only do it to fill in the screen for shorts, but checkout my videos and let me know what you think!
Love the mini trains at Mote park 😀
Yes definatley, always used to spend my Sundays down there watching the miniature railway and if there was any rc boats on the lake!
Lovely video and sparked memories of my youth. I seem to remember that the West Cliff Railway was steam powered back in the day, guess it isn't now; the East Cliff is still water balance powered (if still working). Spent my early teens living in that area and volunteered on the HMR, a very different railway in those days.
Your piece to camera at the beginning has the view transposed so the station sign is sdrawkcab . Loved the content!
Hornby, now owned by Mike Ashley - what more do you expect - cheap tat overpriced for mugs!
This was renovated before the takeover with formalised but its very on par with what you think Mike Ashley would want 🤣
Must visit there soon, looks like a brilliant day out!
You should!
Hornby's warehouse and logistics operation has been outsourced and is now based in Hersden nr Canterbury, it was run by DS Logistics there. This occured when Hornby also moved it's base to a new business park near Sandwich. They then moved back to the Margate (Westwood) site but only in terms of office operations, which was featured in the James May, two part documentary. The visitor centre now re-invented as wonder works has always remained at Westwood. In my opinion the former Dover Western Docks / Dover Marine station now a cruise terminal office and car park operation would have made a good site for a railway museum. We could do with one specialising in Southern region stock and there used to be a transport museum at Clapham before it moved to York.
Would encourage any attempt to bring in more metrologic equipment use for track laying.
The site is owned by LSL, and Hornby rent their space, I dont know how Hornby can still call it a museum, its not even a visitor centre anymore , they've ripped the heart out of the place, Wonderworks is nothing more than a glorified showroom for their products, prices are sky high, other retail outlets normally sell cheaper when direct from the manufacturer, the place is a waste of space, its exactly the same floor space as the old visitor centre, but there was far more to see and learn from, today its an absolute joke, the historical part of Hornby, what is did, how its progressed has been eradicated by the new management there - as a former employee, I enjoyed the old visitor centre, I had a sense of pride of seeing what I did there, I loaned them an original 1960s tri-ang Hornby electric cleaning brush for locos still in its original packaging for display in old visitor centre, its never been returned to me. I wouldn't waste my time in there, as I say wonder works, coz its a wonder anything works, quality is so low.
Very well put, I completely forgot LSL owns the site so thankyou for that! but completely true its just such a shame its the way it is. Its a true reflection onnwhat Hornby stands for now, basic. Hope you enjoyed the video by the way!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT it confirmed the bitter disappointment I encountered upon seeing it - I thought "what the heck is this?" In short it's an utter embarrassment for Margate, the home of Hornby, I live up the road from it and its positively shocking - when it re opened last September, everything went up in price 33%, even sales stuff was increased by 33% - the cafe does superb sausage rolls - to die for - but only a month ago they did the worst thing - you've guessed it, a price increase on sausage rolls of 33%! Nothing is sacred anymore
I feel your pain!
Was so gutted! got there half hour early to maksure I had a good spot aswell 🤣

Brilliant day out
Lovely stuff. We really enjoyed are visit and to be behind that loco too....epic.
Interesting video thanks. Last time I was in Broadstairs was in the 1950's. I remember my brother and I going out to one of the Lightships on the Goodwins, and some time after (not sure just when) the Lightship broke free of its moorings and was lost with all hands . Also, our holiday was cut short following the drowning of a French student, who fell or jumped off the pier. I remeber the commotion on the beach as her body was found. Nice to see there are actually attractions to visit, including burgers, lol.
Glad you like the video, gives you a good reason to head on back down there and have a wander around!
Another good video, nice to see different things around Kent 😊
Glad you liked the video! Places like the museum need to be put on the map!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT 100% anything with trains should 😂
Think I’ll be visiting Broadstairs soon. Liked the burger review you should do more of them!
Thanks for the feedback i will do,I'll get better as times goes on!
Congratulations to the KESR team and thank you for this great video
Glad you enjoyed it! Thankyou for watching! 👍🏻
At 20:04 i can hear some weirdo shouting boylackasha 🤔
Completely forgot about that!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Finally made it into a video of the weekend! I was the Wittersham Road signalman handling the token exchange!
Ah glad to be the video that was! Hats off to you guys was a fantastic event! 🙌
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT Very glad to hear you enjoyed it! The team (well one person specifically) behind it did an amazing job and it was fun to be a part of!
One person organised all of that? they need to be knighted!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT there was a team, but one of our volunteers put in a tonne of effort in the background (not to say the team did nothing of course, but the team leader definitely went above and beyond)
@@KaiTheRailwayGuy I think we can say they got away with it ey just about
You got some great shots. Wish I’d been there!
You should of! Was amazing to see the reenactment and of course Brittania @ Robertsbridge!
Wow! That’s amazing that you got to drive an engine there! I have been to that railway a lot before and it is great!
Yeah I really didn't expect to be driving one, was only there to film the day but you never know what happens!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT I’ve only recently found this channel and I have subscribed! I would recommend visiting the Bredgar & Wormshill Light Railway. There are plenty of videos on my channel. They have got an event on 13/14 July which is called Woodfair where there will be saw benches, stationary steam engines and diesel trains. But if you want to go to see steam trains then I would recommend the Gala on 6th October
It's a very historic loco & a part of the Channel Tunnel history for transporting broken down Eurostars! I'd happily help them try to fund it! 🙂
😮 I see she hasn't broken down again just like her last railtour! 😂 I caught her at Ashford International last year 1 day before she failed! 😅😬
Same here! i watched her go past in sittingbourne but past couple of years she has been plagued with them
They all have a depot whistle! Apart from the white Class 465's & 466's but they definitely sound nice! 😄 The rear lights on the 375 is quite concerning as they're supposed to be on tail lights which are red, but they're the forward lights 😮 Great video though! 😊 @DJScaniaRigRider
Keen eye there I didn't realise they hadn't been switched!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT Normally when they arrive at their terminal station, the driver before he gets out, changes the lights to the other side so that has the leading lights & the lights that are now at the back, are now the tail lights! I guess he forgot! 😂
Funny you say that acutally they did do a swap at Paddock Wood when I was there!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT They do the service to......I forgot! 😂
@@SSccaanniiaa 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Is called a depot whistle usually used when moving about in maintenance yards, I believe the 376 also had them
Never knew that! Thankyou for that info @lukebrien7619 I'll remember that for next time!
The GWR 28xx/2884 classes actually have a higher tractive effort than the Stanier 8F's, 35,380 lbf vs 32,440 lbf 😉
Oh wow, would love to see them hauling the same load as a comparison!
Weather looked dreadful, loved the fact you braved the open carriage just to get footage 😂
I know right, I was saturated! hopefully next time it will be nicer weather
👍🚂
don't these guys do a driver experience or something when they were down at the rh&dr for the may gala i herd them talking about a driver experience?
Not too sure as i wasnt there but may have only been for the Gala!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT thats a shame!
You're so lucky. I love steam engines so much. I wish I would get to drive one.
One day your chance will happen! I didn't expect it at all to be honest when the opportunity was offered, was just going to go down for the day to film the day!
❤❤❤😍😍😍😍🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃
I've volunteered at Didcot for many years and its really great to see a video like yours. So glad you enjoyed the day out. I was there on Saturday working on the loco you remembered reading about - 18000. See you again soon eh?
Definatley will be there soon, as a 1st impression is was amazing! I think I saw you and another fella working on it?
& Also thanks for watching glad a volunteer that's working there has enjoyed it too!
Like to point out that the Chatterdeen and upnor railway coaches of which 4 are at the SKLR. 2 of them are at the Welshpool railway, Locomotives did NOT do 40mph on the bowaters railway yes they was "thrashed" however Monarch Now at Welshpool was the only Locomotive to haul 14 waggons during bowaters days all other locos were limited either due to their size or weight as not all of the Locomotives could work the full line from Ridham to Sittingbourne. The 5 inch guage railway is the 2nd version of this at kemsley and the first version was installed around 2006 and removed around 2008 and had 2 diesel Locomotive and one steam Locomotive owned by members at the time. Also I am a former member and former Museum creator at SKLR
Wow thankyou for the info their, didn't realise that was the case! Was more or less told by volunteers on the day what they were doing, is there any photos of the 1st version?
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT there is on Flickr I believe
51456 is owed by the railway I volunteer at
One day I'll be going up there, one of the railway I'm most keen to spend a couple of days for it and surrounding railways!

Absolutely love didcot! A great place
Couldn't agree more!
Thats a sexy warship! 😍
Never knew was one was there until i turned around! Either you or we will go for an event later in the year?
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT most definately!!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT Called it a battleship, corrected yourself in post to warship, literally showed the nameplate showing it's clearly a western. The 2 preserved warships can be found operational at the Severn Valley and East Lancashire railways. D1023 Western Fusilier is at Didcot on a 5 year loan from the NRM in York.
@@harrymorris5748 Yeah as soon as I was starting to edit it I realised, I couldn't believe I said battleship 🤣🤣 Thankyou for the info regarding the others!
Do love the spa line and all there locos "home and visiting" 😊
Certainly, looking forward to what they have up their sleeve for the summer gala!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT same as that.. but iam off to swanage before then for there gala.
No ULEZ times
i carnt be the only one that thinks that Mattel wants this series to die and restriction as just crazy and visting are going fill very cheated for 10 minute train ride which at price a family going be paying is going make spa valley railway and other railway look bad and lack off engine and rolling stock with out a face it fill very unlike sodor and just wonding how much longer preserved railway will continued to do this lack luster event before they desired it just not worth it any more 😕
Hopefully this video and others will make a point of it towards Mattel to realise they can do so much more, I believe trips on Spa Valley today went further along maybe towards Eridge from what I've seen!
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT saddly I wouldn't get ower hope up considing Mattel hasn't learnt from past mistakes with this brand 😟
Used to go to the Days Out With Thomas at the Strathspey Railway every time they were on, when I was younger. They stopped doing them in 2007/08 due to "complications" and I think the cost of running it vs. what was made deterred any future Thomas events since.
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT Yes - this weekend service has been operated through to Birchden Junction (between Groombridge and Eridge). It's a shame how restricted Mattel has made these events though - no wonder only nine or ten railways in the UK still bother with the events. Worth it to maintain infrastructure though.
At least they showed the original model era series of the show instead of the rubbish reboot it is an absolute joke and shame on what it has has become thanks Mattel for ruining what was once a great day out of Thomas thanks for sharing this 👍💙🚂
At least they showed the original model era series of the show instead of the rubbish reboot it is an absolute joke and shame on what it has become thanks Mattel for ruining what was once a great day out with Thomas thanks for sharing this 👍💙🚂
No worries, glad you enjoyed it!
What was some of the stuff you'd recommed Mattel do to make the event feel more like it was a few years ago?
Definitely get rid of some certain restrictions such as: Spa Valley have 828 who Donald's and douglas are based off (Mattel said they couldn't do it because it wasn't black) Same with the Class 08 Allow Railways to use Thomas for the full line rather than 10 minutes each way. Allow faces on other locos to be used on the day, there are plenty more I have but typing is tiring!
Will keep this in mind, thanks!@@TRAVELMANOFKENT
It's exactly the same here at the East Lancs. Railway this weekend. Nothing to see or do at the station where there used to be stalls of all kinds and virtually every piece of rolling stock had a face or other decoration. All you can do is get on the train, travel half the length of the line to Ramsbottom where you are not allowed to get on or off so the poor kids don't even get to see Thomas until they get off the train at Bolton Street. There are activities at the Museum (Rusty & Dusty etc.) but it's certainly not the full day out it used to be. I'm just glad that all the kids in my family got to see it before this happened.
Unbelievable isn't it! Glad it wasn't just the event I went to!
I can confirm this was not the best experience ive ever had, day out with thomas was precious as a child and could of been amazing still.. but mattel decided they had to biyd by their rules and try to turn it into the CYI crap fest they did.. not the soa vslley railways fault.. but mattel succeded!
Can I ask do you know what happened to the old Thomas face that UK version of Day out with Thomas had? The one from 90s to 2012 after it was a CGI face?
Not too sure, probably stored somewhere by Mattel or Britt Alcroft or could even be heritage railways have them, speaking to the volunteers they said had the OG plywood faces and plaques stored around the railway so who knows!
@TRAVELMANOFKENT oh alright are u a model series fan or do u also like the cgi era as well?
@@PAULALUZMARLENE Defo a model series guy so so much better 🙌
@@TRAVELMANOFKENT true, but I'm just saying you don't have to watch it but I'm just saying s17-21 we're actually pretty good I mean I may have some bad episodes but it was also kind of good because there actually added some realism and pretty good writing, it's fine if you don't like it but I'm just telling you the good stuff about the CGI era of the show it's fine if you're a model series person I mean the model series are pretty nostalgia
Oh man sorry I mistook what you said to be honest, yeah I would say some those points are very good! 👌
It's a shame you didn't enjoy the experience but thanks for filming anyway. I did Thomas events at Bodmin and the Dean Forest as a child and they are really strong child memories with my family, it's a shame hardly any railways now run it. Classic example of money ruining things.
Totally agree! Glad you enjoyed the video on the plus side 🤣
