  • How to Start Fishing? Learn the Basics and Become an Expert ...
After you decided to become an angler, there is a long, but fun and exciting way in front of you to become an expert.
Everyone was a beginner at some point and there is nothing wrong with that. Maybe you don’t have an experienced angler around you to teach you but that’s ok!
There are some tips that every beginner should follow.
Everything gets better with practice and soon you will have enough experience. Assuming you have no experience at all, and you need guidelines to decide how to start fishing, here is a list of important things you should think about!
    WATERS
Do you want to start fishing on saltwater (sea or ocean)? Or you are interested in fishing on freshwater (rivers and lakes)? Equipment used for those two is different. That is the first thing you should decide because every other decision you make is based on that one.
    EDUCATION
Before heading out for your first fishing adventure, there are numerous ways how to inform yourself about a specific location, equipment, fish species…
Online you can find websites, videos, blogs, books and a lot more. Make sure you are using reliable sources to educate. Don’t be afraid to ask questions on forums, there is a big online fishing community ready to help!
And be aware of the fact you are a beginner. Don’t try to skip the basics and try to catch the biggest tuna in the country. Learning basics is a foundation for everything that comes later.
    EQUIPMENT
So, you decided to try fishing for trout on a near-by river or a carp in a lake? Maybe mullets on the sea?
Your equipment should be basic, multifunctional and not too expensive. Your first rod and reel will be used more for learning purpose. Keep it simple.
Find out what type of equipment is necessary and buy entry-level models. You can even try with the used ones. With time you will see what suits you and you will be able to upgrade.
All the information you can find online. You can even ask the personnel in your local fishing store for some tips and tricks. Don’t forget proper clothes and a camera to make a memory of the moment!
    PRACTICE
Ok, you got the equipment but everything seems a bit more complicated than you expected? You can’t attach your reel properly? Can’t tie a knot for a hook?
Find instructions and try it, don’t wait to get on the river, because your day will be ruined. Practice at home. Tie knots, attach bobbers, try to spool a new line…
When you figure it out, go out to the nearest water surface and practice casting. Be careful; find a place with no other people around you. After couple of times, you are almost ready to start fishing!
Casting with bobbers is a bit harder than without. But for a beginner it is easier to fish with bobbers because you will not lose hooks when they catch the river bottom.
    BAITS
Again, we go back to the second advice - education. Different species require different baits, and the same specie fish need different baits in different time of the year.
Look it up and try with something not too complicated and easy accessible. Make sure you attach it properly. At this time better is to buy baits than try to make your own.
    LOCATION
While learning how to fish, the best location is a flat terrain on a lake/river/sea shore. Avoid unnecessary distractions, like trying to find your way on a boat or standing on huge rocks. All of your concentration has to be on fishing here. So, make sure you have enough space.
    RETRIEVING THE FISH
Awesome, it seems you almost caught your first fish! When the fish bites your hook, you need to be careful while retrieving it, or you may lose it. If you lose a fish or two, don’t get disappointed, that happens.
Be persistent and soon you will develop a “feeling” for it. Keeping it too loose fish can unhook, and keeping it too tight can cause a line to break under pressure. When you get it out, be mindful and respectful, no unnecessary torturing of the fish.
    LICENCE
On most locations you need license, again, inform yourself where to get it and what is allowed on a particular place.
If you catch the fish under the legal-size limit, release it. Also, think about catch and release fishing to conserve nature. Take away only what you need.
    And in the end …
    I have to repeat, PRACTICE!
Practice the basics, when you master those, educate and practice more to upgrade your skills. That is the only way to become an expert. And remember, don’t put a lot of pressure on yourself, fishing is about enjoying, everything else will come with time.
