Nell Irvin Painter, a leading historian of the United States, is the Edwards Professor of American History, Emerita, Princeton University. In addition to her earned doctorate in history from Harvard University, she has received honorary doctorates from Wesleyan, Dartmouth, SUNY-New Paltz, and Yale.
A Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Nell Painter has also held fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the American Antiquarian Society. She has served as president of the Organization of American Historians and the Southern Historical Association. Those presidential addresses have been published in the Journal of American History (“Ralph Waldo Emerson's Saxons” in March 2009) and the Journal of Southern History (“Was Marie White?” February 2008). The City of Boston declared Thursday, 4 October 2007Nell Irvin Painter Day in honor of her Outstanding Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center in 2006.
A prolific and award-winning scholar, her most recent books are The History of White People (W. W. Norton, 2010, paperback, March 2011),Creating Black Americans (Oxford University Press, 2006), and Southern History Across the Color Line (University of North Carolina Press, 2002). A second edition of Standing at Armageddon: The United States, 1877-1919 and a Korean translation of Sojourner Truth, A Life, A Symbolappeared in 2008. Her other books are also still in print. Question: How have non-Anglo-Saxon ethnicities been incorporated into, or excluded from, the definition of “white”?
Nell Irvin Painter: Yes, mostly incorporated into. The dialogue changed. The discourse changed according to the needs of the time, so in the middle of the nineteenth century when Emerson was writing when he looked around his New England there were these very poor people whom he did not consider Saxons. They were Celts and they were immigrants. They were poor Irish immigrants. These were the famine immigrants, but the end of the century those people had children and those children had gone to school and made their way up the economic ladder a little bit. That was one side of it. The other side was the turn of the twentieth century brought a wave of new immigrants, people from Southern and Eastern Europe and the near east and so the former Celts as a separate race got tucked into American whiteness, not as Saxons, but as Nordics, so the twentieth century term is Nordics, which has to do with Europeans from the northwest of Europe, which includes Ireland, so that was an incorporation of people who had been despised. So the early twentieth century saw something that we can only call racism against immigrants, poor immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe and by the time their children and grandchildren were mobilized in the new deal in the Second World War and then allowed to buy homes for white people only in the suburbs after the Second World War then they become white people, and there is a large sort of passé part of whiteness that includes everybody and that’s the whiteness that we inherit in the twenty-first century. It’s a whiteness that has also been buffeted around a bit.

She's just talking about the history of how people who lived in the U.S. viewed white immigrants from various parts of Europe. I don't understand why people in the comments are getting upset, she's just talking about things that happened. She's not claiming that these views were accurate, just that people held them. I mean if I say "in the 1930's through the 1950s people thought that some cigarettes were healthy", I am in no way saying "I believe that some cigarettes are healthy"
People tend to forget their history pretty quickly. They tend to forget or be ignorant of the fact that their grand-parents and even some parents were not considered "white" back then, especially people of southern European, Eastern European and Lapps! It wasn't that long ago! Now...you have other groups entering the "white" category still, like Latinos of European or mainly European/Arab background, people of Arab background and people of Persian background. It will always be like this, first they become scapegoats and then they're accepted into "mainstream" society! I mean...people still think Spaniards, Portuguese, Greeks and even Italians and some French aren't "White" in the USA! I mean...c'mon!

I’m Polish, and while we were very good at assimilating over other ethnicities and had very little organized crime, we also had an unusual amount of miscreants compared to the more civilized population.
But we adapted. It should be a source of pride that you did this just as it’s a source of pride for Italians to move out of organized crime. But don’t think you were all angels with perfect morals when you arrived. Most of us left Europe because we got into some kind of trouble.

I’d say her projection of Afro-American race politics onto Europe and Europeans is what people find deceptive.
The very fact that ANYONE would speak on this bogus subject as if most people are obsessed with race like she is, and to use terms like "whiteness" or "lily white" is insulting and narrow, but to come from a person who seems to be a relatively overt racist, should make it pushed away into the dark realms of fantasy and conspiracy and hate mongering speech.
I have a question? What is blackness? Is that a term that would work? Sounds kind of racist.... so why does whiteness work?
The problem in this debate, is the preconceived notion that race is a binary structure: White, or non-White. It really is NOT that simple. There are peoples who are decidedly white, and decidedly non-white. However, there is a rather large and silent population of people who are in-between, and there are multiple positions within that in-between. In other words, race is actually a spectrum, not a binary. Being a spectrum, it means whiteness to non-whiteness are a scale, a question of "how white", not just "white or not". Plenty of groups must be analyzed on the basis of how white, how many components of whiteness they possess, as indeed whiteness is not monolithic, but is characterized by a series of components (colour, culture, geography, language, religion, history, wealth etc) that each influence positionality differently. Jews are an excellent example of a group that is falls somewhere in the middle. Considering them equal in position to WASPs is simply reckless and inaccurate, but considering them People of Colour is ill-fitting as well. They occupy a liminal zone of not-quite-whiteness wherein certain components of whiteness (often colour, geography, culture) afford certain qualities of whiteness, while lacking others (language, religion, history), for example. It is also worth noting that phenotype, as the physical aspect of race confuses the classification of ambiguous groups, in the sense it may be individual-specific, as such that some members may possess the colour component, and some may not, or other physical components as well. For example, some Arabs are as white as Europeans, but the other components of whiteness may be missing. There are many groups today that continue to have a complicated relationship with race, whom I'm sure would be contested in debate over how they fit into race: Jews, Slavs, Arabs, Armenians, Georgians, Saami, mixed-race peoples, and others. Race is arbitrary. When we look for a magic line that supposedly divides white people from non-white people, we cannot find it because it is merely imaginary. That line has been redrawn so many times, it is essentially meaningless. There is no objective way to decide who is white and who isn't beyond the obvious cases. The ambiguous groups simply cannot fit one way or the other, since their position changes depending on which components of whiteness we are analyzing and from what perspective. There is no simple answer. As I have concluded, race is a spectrum, with a variety of placements, white is a zone on the spectrum, and POC is a zone on the spectrum, but ambiguous is also a zone, and each zone has its own variability as well and may overlap with adjacent zones. It is important to resist the temptation to oversimply and reduce race into singularity and meaninglessness. Nuance and complexity is inherent to understanding race upon deeper examination.

Technically, Brunn and Keltic-Nordic subracial groups fall within the Nordic type, and they are some of the most common phenotypes in Ireland.

I really think that the decision to select words such as "whiteness" and then define them to mean something other than what intuitively people would understand (a method borrowed from propaganda) has utterly blown this conversation out of the water. Racism no longer means "prejudice based on race" its been re-defined to mean some abstract power system in action combined with racial identity and whiteness according to this is just how socially/economically mobile people are. If you create your own language in this way it effectively makes reasoned discourse impossible. Of course the conservatives are listening to these people and rolling around laughing both sides of the argument are having totally different conversations. There may be validity to some of the subject matter but this approach to study and address these issues has been catastrophic.

My maternal great grandparents were immigrants from Southern Italy (Reggio Calabria -- tip of the boot!) and my paternal great great grandmother immigrated from County Donegal, Ireland in the 19th century. Both my paternal grandmother and grandfather were half Irish. I always knew I was part Irish and Italian as well as Swedish (my other set of maternal great grandparents immigrated from Sweden). I identified more with Irish and Italian because that heritage was a big part of my upbringing. I also knew my ancestors were treated like garbage when they first came here, The Ku Klux Klan burned crosses outside my grandmother's childhood home when she was a teenager because she and her family were Catholic. However, I only recently learned that the Irish and Southern Italians were not considered white in the 19th and early 20th centuries. I think if more descendants of Irish, Italian, Eastern European, and Jewish immigrants were aware of this and spoke about this when advocating for racial justice, it could help white people overall understand that race is a social construct and that whiteness erases culture and identity; whiteness is what is needed to uphold anti-Blackness, racist systems and institutions and racism.

my mothers grandfather was an italian immigrant and my family has been subject to discrimination for generations (i dont have to deal with it but my mom did and her father) kids in school would ask my mom if her parents were in the mafia and they would make fun of her last name which was incollingo and theyd call her incognito. she grew up severely poor and so did her father, she climed her way out of it though for me and my brother. my background has made it rough for me even tho my skin is white and im not going to allow some lady who thinks her race is better than the rest grand stand and say her race is the only one that has it rough. everyone has it rough, stop dividing people by race.

Science absolutely cannot postulate a theory of whiteness. There is no white gene, my dude. That is to say science can only give us the descriptive claims for the things we consider racial characteristics, and the onus is on society to make the normative claim of what is a race. That’s the reason why things like race, gender, sexuality, etc. are considered social constructs: you cannot find a scientific explanation for _how_ nor _why_ we decided to manufacture distinct identities for those characteristics. I don’t agree with this next thing, but it’s why some people want to abolish race. That the racial identities and classifications have outlived their usefulness and are historically used to oppress, so we should drop the normative claim distinguishing people byway of race.
I use my whiteness every day to my benefit. I go first in line, I get lower prices, I get invited to the best parties, I get doors held for me, I get my shoes shined, I get the best customer service, etc, etc, etc.

I am in Italian Jew and I don’t consider myself white and I was never treated as so and if I was I was always an Italian Jew and a lot of my white friends would call me that so I was too Italian to be Jewish to Jewish to be Italian and white but not white enough so I always felt different because my first language was Italian so I couldn’t speak English and I just always felt like an outsider and I didn’t know that I was Jewish until I was six years old are used to go to a church with my grandparents and then all of a sudden I had to go to a synagogue where I couldn’t even speak English yet alone Hebrew and I wasn’t Jewish enough so I don’t consider myself white because of that

The reason the richest countries tend to be white is because since the industrial revolution, which started in Scotland and spread to England and from there the rest of Europe, White people have generated most of the world's wealth. No Europe, no industrial capacity, no wealth. Rather than complaining, others should be grateful to share in the spoils. And perhaps, right to complain about the environmental costs of industrialization. Further to this, is it because White people are evil that they tend to have more wealth within western countries, or because western countries are so open, so inviting, and so successful that they in fact let in hundreds of millions of people from around the world to share in the spoils in the first place? It can take a while to work your way up. If you are not factoring common sense into your ideology, it is not worth having. Of course racism, white racism as well, exists, and explains some disparities, just as industrialism has caused much damage, and is hardly superior to indigenous societies in any absolute sense. But you have to include common sense to have any credibility.

I'm Irish and indeed the colour of my skin is "white" although my ancestors arrived in Ireland many of 1000s of years ago and were subject to slavery I'm not Caucasian I'm Irish calling Irish White is similar to calling a person from the Philippines or a Maori just by the colour of their skin or what race they look similar to instead of looking at them as a people who have become native to their home island so therefore a different race.

Why can't we just call it what it is. It's classism. It's not whiteness, it's classism. The wealthy, the established community, they don't like outsiders or the poor. Given enough time, the poor outsiders can build a little wealth and become members of the community. They don't become white.
I see no reason for this type of language in our efforts to tackle our issues with classism other than to undermine all potential advancements on that front.

I'm sorry but I don't accept "whiteness" as synonymous with "accepted as normal in American society." While it may largely correlate with being white, the fact that Irish, Italians, etc. were not accepted as so proves that it is not a 1:1 correlation. Perhaps the academics should have chosen a more accurate term to attack than "whiteness."
wolfpax22 Racism is based on perceived biological differences. The "Celtic" race was seen as inferior to the true whites or "Anglo-Germanic" race.
Certainly the British people hated the Irish and wanted to dehumanize them. They were not well liked in America for a long while either. But "not white?" I challenge you to show me a single primary source (that was not fringe by the standards of its age) that specifically said that Irish were "not white."
