I always wonder if your parents are a big part of motivation. This and other people you like, like an identity based goal. If you always see people that have accomplished the things you are working towards... And part of you really doesn't ever want to... be like that, or associate to those qualities they have. Is that killing motivation? Also...when you hear that cliche line about being yourself, does this just mean being like your parents? Because that would be the first thing you ever were - (the first people you emulated) So being yourself would mean... be your parents... in place of emulating other people (because somehow the second option is the faker option)
1) Learn how to learn 2) Make studying enjoyable /study in groups 3)Never cram for deadlines 4) Don't depend on degrees for jobs , do what you want to do 5)You have time, don't waste it 6) Learn about time management/productivity 7) Prioritize your health 8) Life is not one step after the other, there's a whole world of possibilities , approach it with lightness and ease 9)Learn skills
Starting off strong with banger advice, Ali! "if you haven't yet taken the time to learn how to learn you are profoundly shooting yourself in the foot". Your learning approach is the very base that your studying stands on. If that's not effective, you've kind of failed before even starting.
00:00 Learning *how to learn is crucial; effective studying methods like active recall, spaced repetition, and others save time and improve learning outcomes.* 00:28 Studying *doesn't have to be solitary; forming study groups can make learning more enjoyable and energizing.* 01:54 Avoid *cramming; daily revision is more effective for long-term memory and a less stressful approach to studying.* 06:14 Don't *limit career options solely based on your degree; focus on the life you want and seek careers aligning with that vision.* 07:55 Utilize *free time efficiently; develop skills beyond academics that align with your aspirations and career goals.* 11:26 Value *your health during your student years; establish healthy habits early, as they're foundational for a fulfilling and successful life.* 13:48 Maintain *an experimental mindset; don't limit experiences based on their immediate benefits or CV appeal, but rather explore various opportunities for personal growth and discovery.*
I am absolutely enamored with your channel and product recs. I am a 44 year old veterinarian and wish I had seen your content much earlier in my career. Thank you so much for sharing, inspiring, putting new life into my career and generally being awesome. I am a big fan.
I am a Moroccan university student from Marrakesh. It s been a year since I found your channel and the least I can say is that they totally changed the way I approached stuying. I always come back to them whenever I need a reset.
Every time I felt "my gosh i need some motivation!" i always look for your videos Ali! you are such a big inspiration of unstopping learning and developing self. Thanks so much for sharing the insights it is so helpful. I also absolutely love your Sunday Snippets. The content is freakin amazing I have subscribed different people but yours contribute a real value in each week. I am actually waiting and expecting the email shoot out each week to read it! Sending you my admiration from New Zealand!
Good advice Ali. I’m studying a masters degree now 20 years after starting my first degree, and to be honest, unis are much better nowadays at teaching effective studying techniques (based on my sample of two). One of the revelations for me is making sure you know why you’re taking notes because that will affect how you take them. So putting together notes for an essay or dissertation will be very different to writing notes to help you revise for an exam.
Yeah, the last point makes more sense to me. In a way, I am pursuing a mechanical engineer, But i have always had a curiosity to experience all the things in college. I like watching lots and lots of TV shows, movies, anime and also I play games and i read books and try to experiment all in the learning part also, like learning how to code, and UI design and graphic design all of that. Try to experience as much as I can. Because who knows what my life after college will be. So i try to enjoy myself as well as learning something new.
Hey Ali! Being an A-level student I do all of these mistakes. Before watching this video I was under this misapprehension that my studying techniques are the best. I will now try to negate these mistakes and kind of take an easier approach towards my studies and exams in general. Thanks a million for making this video ❤️
Why is everyone saying you have so much free time as a student? We have 38 fifty minute lessons plus on average one exam every week plus need to write laboratory protocols every other week plus some other homework. How on earth would a 40h job leave you with less free time?
Thats what we call the out of box thinking. Everything you talk about in this video was making sense to the approach i want to follow in my life. I was so ridiculously confused. This kind of attitude and approach actually helps you do the stuff you love rather than sticking to one single path. One must not stop experimenting in his/her life , because thats what will make them ahead of others. Thankyou so much❤ . Would love to listen more from you regarding life , careers and other things.
Okay the background audio in this video is AMAZING! I've watched you're channel for a long time and it's crazy to see how the quality just keeps going up and up!
This is so true about studying alone , I have been studying alone for years now specially this 2023 was such a lonely study era for me!! And that's making me unproductive a lot these days
I have watched all of your videos and I have learned many things, such as study techniques, productivity, how to consume new content, life advice, and more. I have also watched your old videos, like the one about "Tesla" and the apple pencil spinning. I really like your notion tips, especially the resonance calendar and other stuff. I follow your newsletter and you are one of my favorite RUclipsrs. And... please keep going! I watch at least 3-4 of your videos daily. And don't quit, I will always support you! (I am a boy 😂)
{ Active Recall, Spaced Repetition, Interleaving, Categorizing }, with the exception of categorizing, the mentioned are methods for studying, with the aim of doing well in exam. I am not pooh-poohing these type of methods for I had used them myself to a certain a degree of success in the past. What happened when there is no more exams? Then the aim and the set of methods would be different. It would still be learning (docteorum) but not studying (studeonum) anymore. Since this video is about learning to learn, I felt that a lot could be said; however, most would be detrimental to a student's outcome. The facts are: i. The biggest problem is temporal motivation. If motivation is not a problem, any one can just start read, do exercises, repeat ad finem, and perform well in exams. Not that the art of learning itself does not deal with the human psyche, it does. However, if the aim of studying is to do less work, well the subconscious mind would like you to know that you are already achieving that by having less motivation. ii. Some objectives of higher education are things unmentioned: One of the aim of higher education is to foster the young to have the mindset and rational of a certain type. Different people, different opinion on what this is. Indeed, an education institution is mostly ideals-motivated. I once joked that if there were any school 100% focused on the practical, it would be a crime syndicate. Still, the art of learning also have to involve studying the art of teaching and specifically on what are the limitations imposed and the mindsets entangled into the mind of students. iii. Learning experiences cannot be quantified: Perhaps the more you learn, the more your outlook will change. Perhaps now, you think you are just picking up stones. However, one day you may discover the sling and you will find that every stone has the word "lethal" written on it.
#7 is VERY realistic, don’t relate your career to your favorite hobbies because doing it x amount of hours a week will kill the fun very quickly. Took auto collision & after graduating with an associates, working in a shop for a few weeks I quickly found out this is not where I wanted to be. Expand your horizons!!
Hey Ali, your videos and tips have helped me so much and I just wanted to say thank you! I’m in high school, and I’ve been thinking of taking some hard classes next year. I know now that I can do it because of all the productivity and study tips you have shared in your videos.
Many students don't know how to learn I also didn't knew but watched your video about active recall and spaced repetition so I used them and got really good grades thank you very much ali❤❤

Hey Ali ! you are doing a great job, by guiding and motivating students on how to study. generally student get very pressure in their head to just pass the exam and not taking study as fun. you are providing students a very good path for the students including me . 👍👍
I’d had a pretty poor day before watching this video but it has given me a fresh feeling of hope and optimism. I really appreciate you Ali your videos really do have that breath of fresh air energising feeling. Thank you 🎉
Thank you for these insights, Ali! These tips were really helpful.. Personally, I found the practising experimental mindset interesting and helpful for me because I often get trapped into this mindset that I can't excel in things that I have never done before or I don't have any relevant skills. I will push myself out of my comfort zone, and start experimenting on different things that I am interested in after this. Being a final-year student, I think it's not too late yet to start right Ali? Because I believe learning is a life-long process and as you said now is the best time to start anything we would like to do. Keep producing more good content like this, Ali! Really missed your content on this channel. Thank you for giving an amazing comeback after a few weeks!
I'm currently in grade 11 ,choosed medical Here in india there's an extremely competitive exam for entrance in medicine, that imma be attending next year and your videos are definitely helpful!
We actually HAD classes on "how to learn" but they're a bit of a joke. around 70% would go into blanket statement advice like "keep your workspace clean and organised, have your study materials close by, create a work atmosphere" and the rest would be "advice" like "find your learning type", do a mindmap, take notes, write flash cards... that sort of thing... not really a class on how to learn... You see, it's not only about "having a class" about that sort of thing. it's having someone teach it who actually has something to talk about. I'm very grateful you do that via youtube because at least now its accessible information
Not an actual student rn but this was really helpful, thanks! Also, I drag my feet when it comes to reading non fic so thanks for recording it for Audible!
Wow couldn’t thank you enough for this Vedio , I just needed to hear that, I’m on my graduating year of nursing and almost all of my classmates just take so seriously that they are mean to me and others , don’t like share the important notes that the teacher says so they just keep it to themselves and get good grades, after watch your video it just make feel better that life is not like that just focusing to get good grades and I can do so much outside of my degree and this degree doesn’t determine me as a person and my future. Thank you so much ❤from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
FeelsGoodMan but in serious note i wish i had all these tools and information when i was in highschool and uni. My lfie would be different but i made all the mistakes you mentioned. Can offcourse always go back and finish or start but wont get that time back. Some of the things i didnt have offcourse its not my fault but plenty is. Current kids and students need to be gratefull and use what 2023 and onwards will offer.
I wish this video had come out a day ago! I just subscribed again to Skill Share last night. Haha! Anyway great video! I can share these points with my students.
"I enjoy all of your videos and have been watching them. I would love for you to add Hindi audio tracks to all your RUclips videos. I've already watched the ones with Hindi audio, and I really liked them. Your content is always so engaging and well-made. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into creating these amazing videos for us, Ali Abdaal Sir!"
I relate sooooo much to how parents are way more risk averse. I really wanted to try and experiment certain things but they would just tell me "focus on your grades" So right now im learning these things in secret (i have a feeling they will absolutely destroy me if they found out) Might try web design soon. To anyone who's like me, just do it if you know you really want to try and if its in secret like me, just be prepared for if whoever it is finds out. All the best to everyone out there ❤❤❤ Edit: who knew my typimg is so bad

“Squandering free time” can be key for mental health. Not all time has to be “productive time.” Relaxing is productive, too.

Thank you. These are really helping me a lot. I'm studying online with my friends using pomodorro. And applying active learning.
I am so grateful to you for making this video! I'm so glad I watched it, so many useful tips.❤❤❤❤
The big mistake is, Students watch study videos more instead of studying.😅
dont call me out like that

00:01 Not learning how to learn is a common mistake made by students
01:33 Studying is more enjoyable when done with friends.
03:02 Studying together in a group can be more energizing and productive.

05:56 Narrowing career choices based on degree

The fact that im doing the same type of mistakes every year and still get average grades amaze me 💀
Mediocre
what's your grade bro?
Imagine when you start changing those mistakes bro
@coolerthanice97 yh, the goal is to be your best
Becoming an average student is not difficult but becoming a topper of ur class and passing the toppers of class is difficult 😃
HELLO! From Marrakesh, Morocco❤
Lovely video Ali!
PS: the outdoor setting was pretty cool!
The thing is I can’t study alone bc I will DEFINITELY procrastinate but if I study with my friends or someone else then I will get distracted with them and not study at all 😢

Ali Abdaal is my favorite productivity creator. I'm going to talk to my local library and see if I can't get that book in...
Just I pre ordered the book ..... thanks for remembering ❤
You helped me dude!
Thank you, Ali

Ali is the type of guy who would wear two different watches in his hands to increase his productivity 😂
Wow Ali, this Video has been so super well-made. Keep up the good work! :)
welcome to my country - morocco - !!!
Facts:
a) he is wearing 2 watches, one in every hand.
b) do you guys recognize the background music?
Its from his spotify playlist 😁
I relate sooooo much to how parents are way more risk averse. I really wanted to try and experiment certain things but they would just tell me "focus on your grades" So right now im learning these things in secret (i have a feeling they will absolutely destroy me if they found out) Might try web design soon. To anyone who's like me, just do it if you know you really want to try and if its in secret like me, just be prepared for if whoever it is finds out. All the best to everyone out there ❤❤❤
Edit: who knew my typimg is so bad
ALI YOURE THE BEST

Just on time before my exam
