- A new SEC filing shows Elon Musk increased his ownership of Tesla (TSLA) to 20.5%, drawing him ever closer to his goal of having a 25% voting stake in the company. It's been a wild 2024 so far for the EV maker, with its shares under pressure and Musk's massive $56 billion Tesla pay package struck down by a Delaware court, prompting him to discuss moving the company's incorporation to Texas.
Westly Group Founder and Managing Partner, and former Tesla board member, Steve Westly join Yahoo Finance to discuss Musk, his leadership of Tesla, the company's performance, and why he believes it will have a tough time in 2024.
Westly comments on what Musk and Tesla need to focus on for 2024: "They need to scramble to find the next growth wave, $25,000 car, at least 18 months out, that may be a game changer, might get them back to 30 or 40% growth. What are you going to do in the next 18 months? And I think they've got three shots on goal. They've got the self-driving vehicle with robotaxis. Probably still three five years out. They've got an energy division which most people don't even think about, and that is doing $6 billion last year on the way to maybe $8 or $9 billion this year, growing 50%. That could be a $20 billion division and then they've got the global charging network, because everybody has basically thrown up the white flag, signed a deal with Tesla to be able to use their global charging network. They've got to make one of these three things to work to get the growth cycle back."

Investors have just turned back the clock on the Fed’s tightening campaign and cast aside the Fed fears that ruled them for 15 months, It just gets very daunting to me when I’m sitting there looking at charts and trying to determine if i’m right or wrong! First of all, You could lose it all and you could win it all. It goes both ways. Secondly, what works for A may not necessarily work for B and you should not be a bandwagon investor. A good number of folks are raking in huge 6 figure gains in this downtrend, but such strategies are mostly successfully executed by folks with in depth market knowledge.
It’s unfortunate most people don’t have such information, I don’t really blame people who panic cos lack of information can be a big hurdle. I’ve been making more than $25k passively by just investing through an advisor, and I don’t have to do much work. It doesn’t matter if the economy is crashing, great CFA will always make good returns.

Elon Musk's ownership has not changed in SEC filings. Yahoo Finance has decided to count Options as Shares (they are not until they are exercised. Musks share and options ownership has not changed in over a year as can be seen by looking at the previous years' SEC filings.
Is Yahoo Finance unable to read SEC filings or are they once again intentionally trying to mislead readers and investors?

And Steve does a brilliant job of quickly and objectively summarising Tesla's current situation and what they should and are focussed on. The questions about Delaware are irrelevant to financials, and the question on Share ownership change when it hasn't, again, nonsense.

Steve is a former board member and trying stay neutral. My problem with Musk getting more ownership is that he had about 24% of Tesla before he decided to unload more than 10% abruptly to buy Twitter. What prevents him from doing that again? Shareholders have to give him more each time he unloads? He is only looking out for 1 shareholder - himself.

@@gargalash9191 Elon didn't found Tesla, he wouldn't have been able to easily purchase his way in the first place if Tesla hadn't been publicly listed. Also, the public versus private isn't the issue. The Ford motor company controls Ford because they have an A/B share structure where only A shares get a vote. Berkshire and Google have this share structure. Tesla just wasn't founded with that share structure.

He has 13.5% and owns the options at 22% currently and has asked his next compensation package to include 4% to make it 25% but now he's most likely not going to be CEO until 2030 now and Tesla shares will decline but he's the largest shareholder and will wait for it's value to collapse to take it private with spaceX

these analysts are worthless. tesla is perfectly fine. the auto industry has pulled back on their EV Plans and have reduced production numbers considerably. Using the example of GM, Ford, and the like, the losses they incur with each vehicle sold is tremendous. the push to EV by the traditional ICE companies has stopped. Their EV designs and features are subpar to Tesla and more expensive. NO ONE IS BUYING THAT CRAP. BYD is to this day, still not making a profit. BYD’s popular vehicles sell at an avg. of 12k with no margin, while each vehicle Tesla sells with a double digit % profit margin.
There is no need to rush in this high interest rate environment. The Rest of the Auto Industry is bleeding with no bandage or tourniquet in sight. Dealerships are capitulating, the used car market has been destroyed. Loan delinquencies are hitting all time records. The repo market is overwhelmed, the banks have paused repos because the resale auction market is dead.

Tesla was profitless until just a few years ago. Ppl seem to forget that. So why are ppl shocked the legacy automakers are not making bank on low volume EVs right out of the gate? Each Lucid model is made at something around a $120K loss. BYD gets huge subsidies from China, so it can low-ball and get market share, selling for a loss. The Euros are quite familiar with China's game.

Tesla is going to be known for cars but also a majority of the charging stations, batteries and the like. Just read earlier today the alliances tesla has already started building up with the Fords and GM's of the world. Said tesla can generate between $6 and $12 billion a year through annual charging revenue, opening up charging stations to other brands. He just keeps hitting it out of the park and the naysayers look dumb.

I think they need to ramp Cybertruck and fill orders, plus Tesla Semi needs to go into production. Yes the $25,000 car will add numbers but it takes 3 cars to provide the revenue of one Cybertruck. Tesla could make a no frills Model 3 that could be their $25,000 car. All it would take is a big reduction in battery cost and increased production to take advantage of Wright's law. Tesla Energy can ramp faster than auto. A new car model has to go through all sorts of tests and approvals and manufacturing processes before the first on is sold and this takes time and money. Selling less cars for more money is better than selling more cars for less money.
Gigacasting the entire chassis of the new $25K model car is key. That's what can bring their COGS down from ~$36K/car to sub-$30K and eventually sub-$25K. You can't just "make a no frills model 3" and sell it for $25K. It wouldn't be profitable because they spend more than $25K to build each Model 3, even the standard range. The Model 3 does not use a single gigacast though, it uses 3. And requires welds.

Well, I did and I have yet to hear her say that she invested or bought more shares of Tesla because somehow she thought that Tesla needed to catch the next growth curve, and that curve is to make a 25K car.
In fact, Kathy talked about AI being the center of what’s going to propel Tesla to these lofty heights that she has predicted, and I couldn’t agree with her more.
Sadly though, there are too many people talkin about things that they really know nothing about, because they lack the imagination, and the vision of Elon Musk. Cheers 🥂

BYD is NOT Tesla's competitor. You already listed three other businesses that Tesla's is doing and then on the back end you say BYD, and as far as i know the only product BYD produces is Electric Cars. Inferior Electric cars at that because they don't even have real world AI FSD built into them. BYD is just a plain ole car Company, Tesla is CLEARLY not.
