- Elon Musk took to X - the platform formerly known as Twitter - to provide an update on Neuralink's first human patient to receive a brain chip implant. The Neuralink founder boasted the patient can now successfully control the movements of a computer mouse using just their thoughts.

The result of mouse cursor moving is result of brain spike activity output converted to computer input. All the talk of making people smarter is assuming they can simulate brain activity that feeds the brain a coherent input. Which in this case would be limited to one region of the brain due to the chip being the size of a coin, and electrodes no deeper than 2mm in the tissue. Output of data works, the input will take time, and will be the most controversial, and or revolutionary aspect of this technology.

In human brain, difference impulses produced by different kinds of nervous system can translate variety of important information for human health and life. As nervous system in human brain is a complicated system, it is not easy to regulate with neuralink.
It’ll more than likely provide diagnosis than cures.. for now.

This needs to be more talked about; in a good way
no, completely disagree here, the effects are so unknown, musk could easily be lying, he’s not known to be completely reliable with his own products and it will alter the entire nervous system- leading to consequences sort of unimaginable on any scale. This thing could literally be a cause of a form of cancer- humans could like computers- burn out entirely after a short period of time- the more neurolinks used to solve this- the more overloaded they could get and could lead to death on a mass scale. Also could be used by governments that agree with Musk to control masses. It is good for reduction of certain illnesses sure- but there’s so much danger, uncertainty and people willing to use this as a means of evil that it can’t just be painted as a saviour complex.
Remember that time Elon Musk said his cyber truck glass was bullet proof but minutes later they shattered the cyber truck window with a BASEBALL? This neurolink news feels like one of those times.

Besides this technology is paving the way for more sophisticated brain to computer interface, imagine controlling robotic legs with direct input from your brain for someone who's lost their legs,
And at some point in the future it might be a technology for healthy people as well to augment out capabilities and allow for faster interactions with computers, in ways we can barely imagine nowadays...
I got to be honest, when neuralink started, I really thought they were gonna fail altogether, I really thought it was a farfetched endeavor... But I'm mindblown at their achievements so far, and I believe there's much more exciting updates ahead of us

Their identities are private they are doing it and will probably release any info in 4 months from now when they have done the first phase of trial then the second phase and then trials will end in several years from now then it will go to public testing and approval so probably by 2030 it will be largely available for disable people and a bit further you can start to get cyberware like cyberpunk who knows

@@bigtime4794 the point isn't to control a mouse with your brain this is just a showcase but the point is the possibility of whats to come for accessibility to many people who suffer illnesses and physical ailments that will/can benefit greatly from this tech.
Even controlling a mouse is a good showcase of it's capability which can expand beyond just moving a mouse.
It's not the same point as those helmets you speak of. Although might have been a great precursor.
