    Hearing the familiar crack and pop of the tree, suddenly opened the floodgate to memories of cutting firewood with my grandfather. Best wishes to you and your family for a fantastic Independence Day.🇺🇸

    Jonsered, I had one of those many years ago. Best way to cut a notch (to have a stable hinge for better fall-control of the tree) is to cut your back-cut even with the V of your wedge. Cutting above the V makes a longer hinge that is more flexing and unstable. The notch up or down will work, but when falling downhill, a down facing notch (Humboldt) or angled top & bottom (Open-Face) will provide control for a longer fall (maybe, likely). Biggest things: Know your path away back from the tree, move branches on the ground etc... Always move back-away, never to the sides of the tree (so it doesn't club you) and move far enough to the back (so the tree won't spring back and ram you).

    • @TheNorthwoodsman1
      @TheNorthwoodsman1  4 месяца назад +2

      All good points, trying to perfect that Humbolt is my issue right now.

      @@TheNorthwoodsman1 Yes, most of the time I just cut a standard notch, it is easier.

    Those beetles are destroying everything. We've lost so many pines here it's hard to keep up dropping em. Cant hurt to have extra. You're going to need more firewood anyway. Can you imagine how many of Vonnies famous pies You're going to need this fall. Not to mention hot coffee. And other meals, be worth it all. I'm happy just to watch it all take place.

    Martin, friendly suggestion. Maintain those steel wedges by removing the rolled over edges or get rid of them. Lost a friend to a piece of shrapnel that a glancing blow sent flying right into his jugular. Dangerous. Doc

    Be careful of that tamarack in a log house. They have spiral grain fairly often (at least around where I'am, and it's so tough that when it dries it lifts up on the notches, and you can't get it back down most of the time.
