Jeff was my youngest brother who died nearly 20 years ago with lymphoma Cancer. As you can see from the video he had a great sense of humor. This video brought back great memories. Thank you for putting this on RUclips. Gary Brown. His best friend Gary Hawkinson was a good friend of our family and they are both missed.
Glad you found the video Gary. The three of us worked in the auto factory together but had many other common interests from hunting to tubing behind Jeff's big boat.
What a wonderful way to remember good friends. Seeing your two buddies walking away at the end brought tears to my eyes. We should all cherish our get -togethers because you never know if your going to see that person alive again. Thank you Martin.
@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Sorry you lost your long time friends.. Always remember the good times. Put boards with nails in front of door and windows, that will bite and maybe they won't come back...stronger window coverings too. There is lots of Elk, Deer, Black Bears in my area....
Martin you honor your long passed friends by sharing with us. You have continued to excel at keeping your strength and repairing the cabin that hosted so many memories. You seem to be the last man standing - a bittersweet time in life. If you have any of your original pack of cabin friends still living, perhaps they no longer wish to or are able to brave the wilderness, as you still have the strength and grit to do. You still amaze me what you accomplish. May your future days at the cabin be blessed ones.
I relish my times at the cabin in light of all those who have passed on. I wish they were still here and making visits with me. It is so nice to finally have this video edited and posted.
I thought to record that segment as I sat at the cabin thinking about how I was going to present the old video. It turned out to be so much more than a tale of the bear breaking in.
Well, I went from laughin' to cryin'. Things will be so much better when we all get home together. A treat to see the younger you. Handsome now & then. 😉
Martin, I hope you turn all your old tape into digital. You should preserve the memories for all to see. Just think what we could have preserved if such items existed back in the 17, 18, & 19th centuries. I watched this video and tried to remember where I was during that time. I think back on my friends that have gone. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for sharing, you have a huge heart with a few pieces missing but huge all the same.
I'm watching you and your buddies, but I swear I'm watching me and my buddies on past camping and hunting trips. Wish those days could have lasted forever. Thanks for sharing.
OMGosh! That handsome dark head of hair! The white hair looks pretty darn good, too! I was laughing my butt off listening to you three cutting up together. Then you said they both had passed away. Life sure can throw some curves. It's great to have all those memories, but I know you must miss them terribly. Stay safe.
What a blast that was ! The look on your face was good too, when the fellas informed you of the bear's visit as you wheeled in on your bike. Wow. Thirty years ago this fall. It really is a shame that both the fellows have passed on, especially since they were young. Friendship is a wonderful thing, and we often take it for granted. How lucky indeed, that you have that footage to take you back to the memories that were created. Life is great, even with its' ups and downs. It was amazing to "meet" your friends through the magic of videotape that was preserved and converted to digital. Thanks for sharing those precious moments with your viewers. May you long have your memories, and may your days give you the opportunity to make many more.
So cool to see you as a younger man, looked like a fun trip apart from the bear trashing the cabin. 1987, seems like yesterday. Thank you very much for sharing. 👍🏼
Great video, Martin. My question, only a matter of curiosity, is that 30 years ago, did you rent or own a local farm in the area, and is that how you were attracted to this cabin? In another video, made a year or two ago, you drove home, and your wife brought you a cuppa coffee, and it was many hours drive south where you now live. Did you and your wife and family live up in this area 30 years ago, as I think in this 1987 tape, or in the video, you mention that you only had to come just a few miles to the cabin, as you lived locally at that time? Once again, just idol curiosity, and I guess we have all aged a bit in the past 30 years. :)
All the bits of info over the years cause some confusion. The timeline is that we purchased an old farmhouse in 1978 as a vacation spot. Out exploring in 1984 I came across the old cabin. In 2002 we sold the old farmhouse because I favored the cabin and we were not using the house as much as we once did. I have no family ties to the MN area.
Hi Martin, thanks for that amazing look back in time. I have to admit that the closing scene of your friends walking away brought a couple of tears. A perfect touch. They sound like they were some really 'stand-up' guys. God bless them, and God bless you too. Thanks for all the sharing you do with us.
You are welcome. I started editing the video about the bear breaking in but soon realized the real story was my friends being there. I am sure there will be tears shed by others including me as I go back to relive those times.
My wife and I watch all your videos. This was a good one! Sorry to hear that your two friends passed on so young. Moments in time that you will always remember...
Thank you for sharing your wonderful memories with us. I treasure every moment I sent with my friends. It just sad that I have surpassed so many and yet I am still only 52 years old. The movies and pictures are all I have left to those wonderful times. God Bless Martin and his family.
Great video. Reminds me of my own similar experiences. Sorry for the loss of your friends. I just turned 70 this year and far too many of my old friends are gone. God bless them all.
Loved this nostalgic video full of adventurous ventures. Great memories for you I’m sure. The best tribute to your dear friends is the way you have updated and maintained the cabin. Cherish those times and the new memories you make today. God bless Martin!
Great video! Loved all the old footage. That was one destructive bear. We have had a couple like that as well over the years. One demolished a full size dear decoy and another got inside our truck and chewed on the seat. Glad you still have the videos and memories of the good times with your friends. Looked like y’all had great times together. Thanks for sharing, hope to see more.
Great video Martin! Thank you for sharing it with us. Your friends sure seemed like fun guys. I'm sorry to hear they've passed on. But I'm sure they're looking down and very pleased on how well youve been taking care of the cabin. God bless and thanks again for sharing your cabin videos with us.
That really was fun to watch. Nice tribute to your friends you lost way too soon. Y'all must of had some really good times together. Thanks for sharing it with us. 😊💓🐾P.s. I hope your wife don't mind me saying, your a very handsome man Martin.😉😀
What a great vid to have Martin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Those guys looked like the " BEST " friends a guy could have !! Great memories for sure . I know all about bears , 7 years ago , I fought off 2 big bears for hours as they tore the side out of my cabin and all I had was a fire poker to fight back , as I was inside . I think I lost 10 years off my life , that night , and never go back now without 2 fire-arms . Thanks for sharing !! Cyril , Ontario Canada.
That was really a good one Marty. Sadly they are gone but it was wonderful that all of you had each other. I take my 44 Colt Anaconda on all my excursions into the wild. Like one of the commentators said, your vids help me to remember my buddies while we hunted, fished, and hiked in the wilderness mountains of NM. Please upload as often as you want.
Awe Marty this was the BEST video ever!!! I absolutely ❤️❤️❤️ it!!! I’m so sorry you lost your 2 friends. I just turned 50 too and lost 2 friends including the first love of my life to cancer in the last 5 years. It makes you appreciate everyday even more...even though you will never forget them. Thank you for sharing this with us ...
I didn't even know your friends and I am sad they have gone on...Bet they are glad their memories live on in your heart and that great place. Thanks for posting Martin.
I can relate there is a little lake I go to off the magnetawan River I go to. Been going there for years it is hard to get to and not the nicest but I still go out of respect for those who have past they only really die when they are forgotten. I enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing them.
Thanks for sharing those precious memories with us Martin. I am from over the pond in UK and discovered your channel some months back now. So sad to see old buddies gone so early. Best wishes to you sir.
Must have been 6 bears that didn't like this video (11/22/17) Great video and even better memories of times gone by and sad loss. Thank you for posting these great memories.
Very nice video, sorry to hear that your two friends passed on so young, nice memories together you have documented, that bear sure made a lot of work and stories for you guys. Keep on keeping on and Best of luck always and thanks for sharing your videos.
Bear won't be sleeping unless the coffee was decaf lol?!!! After all the damage that bear did, you guys all had great attitudes. I would have been taking measurements for a bear skin rug!! Sorry about the loss of your friends Martin. They seemed like great guys. Thanks for sharing the memories with all of us. take care.
What a great glimpse into your youth! That video was such a gift, your friends seemed to be really wonderful guys. I am sorry to hear you lost both of them so quickly. Keep the videos coming, you always make me laugh!!

TheNorthwoodsman1 Yes I can understand that it would really help tell the story a lot easier! I hope you share many more of these videos if you have changed their formats to where you could post them on here! I really enjoy watching your channel & your cabin adventures ,really glad you share them as they are really informative plus enjoyable!
Before I am 40 I want to retire from fulltime work and start living full time!!...Old blokes tell me often enough that they shoulda woulda retired why they still had the legs to carry them and before 50 seems to be great? So I am aiming for 40 ...Bears in the cabin must have been a lesson? Stories big and small inspire me to get out every day to get my own. From cockle creek Tasmania.
Good to have film of friends and family,so when they pass on you can still be able to hear and see them. Thanks for sharing very interesting I was waiting for that bear to come running out that tree line.
Thanks so much Martin, this is a wonderful look at times gone by. My baby was only 2 years old in 1987, I guess I'm getting old. :) I hate how the bear tore up the place, but I know that's what they can and will do. So sad both friends have past, this is good memories to hold on to. Be safe and take care when your out at the cabin.
WOW, I can truly relate to your video, and only have bits and pieces of video to remember those friends by? Wish I'd have done more of that VHS Taping! Seriously!! Well put together Sir!
sorry to here bout your friends martin but im sure they woulda wanted you to share this with us but in doing things like this it keeps them and everyone still very much alive in all our memories ! please keep making new ones for us and them to watch from above you can bet they are my friend ...
Martín ,my wife and I have wàtched every video, and love them all, but I'll bet I've watched this one beginning to end a dozen times since you first posted it. I draw parallels to my life, and friends lost. You just have to keep moving ahead, be thankful for each day, give the wife a smooch. It's all good...
Each campfire light's a new The flame of friendships true The Joy I've had in knowing you Will last my whole life through. And as the embers die away We wish that we might ever-stay But since we can not have out way We'll come again some other day. That's a Girl Scout song we sang around the campfire when I was growing up. Your video brought me to tears, especially since I'm about your age and have recently lost many life long friends, some with whom I've camped in our younger years. What a beautiful, touching video. I laughed along with you all, marveled at how handsome we were back then, sad for friends who passed much too soon. I wish I could go there to your magical cabin in the woods and make new memories. Thank you for letting us into these memories.
Hey Nick, so great to hear from you. This video was supposed to be all about a bear breaking in but but by the time it was done it turned into a great tribute for your dad and Hawk. Had a lot of great times with your dad.
Our family lives full time in black bear country. Nothing is safe here if they want to get in. They will break into cars & trucks if they smell a hint of food. Sure can destroy the inside of a car! We installed "Bear Proof" bars on our windows and doors. So far, so good. Thanks for the great video!
Fortunately we had have little trouble lately. I keep the food sealed up, avoid bacon and splash a little pinesol on things when I leave. Plywood in the windows has protected them. I think this one came back and saw the ;lywood and tore out a corner to get in but found no food and never came back. The same huge tracks made me think it was the same one.
If a bear ever confronts me out on the trail I will go back to packing that 44 magnum but unless its near dark I have taken my chances and traveled light.
Marty it's so good of you to share this. Soon as I heard the name Hawk, I realized he was the buddy you talked about at Hawk's Pond. That bear seemed like he was rabid, biting through non food metal or he was super hungry. You can never be too careful in the wilderness. Here's to many more years without bears at the cabin !
I thought I had watched all of the videos, but clicked on the link at the end of your recent video. This reminds me of my best friend and I going to a similar cabin in Potosi, MO for a week at a time. We made several trips to that cabin, surrounded by 2700 acres of private land, all wooded. Logging trails, no cell phone distractions and great memories that only exist in our heads. I wish I had a place like that again to take my son, but it's hard to find in Indiana. Instead we have a cabin tent that sets up wherever we can find a sweet place to camp. Thanks for sparking great memories of my buddies from around the same time!
You know I started editing for that video thinking it was about a bear trashing the cabin. By the last edit it had become so much more. You have the right idea using that tent, the important think is to be out there with your son.
Wow the art of video has definitely changed, but bears are still bears. Great throw back video Martin, you got me sitting here thinking about good time of the past and good friends who are gone. 30 yrs ago seems like just yesterday.
I had a 180+ # black bear visit me a couple weeks ago but it was at my home not a cabin back in the woods. Have some great photos of him since it was before dark. Ripped my metal bird feeders apart like they were a piece of paper. They sure can do some heavy damage! I’m still looking over my shoulder every time I go outdoors. Lol. I loved this video you made and it’s such a wonderful tribute to your friends and of good times in the past. It’s great to see you still have the cabin and come back to enjoy it today.
I just found your videos. Wow! What a truly beautiful life you have. Such a pleasure to watch. I’m so truly sorry for the loss of your friends... they seemed like kind souls. Thankfully, you have such wonderful memories as well as the video. And what a funny thrilling adventure you captured with the bear! Thank you so much for sharing a lil piece of your life with us! What a gem!
That ending of your buddies walking away in slow mo Hit me like a ton of bricks! Best memories for sure. You can always look back and cherish those moments. Stay strong and keep posting. They are looking down on you enjoying the cabin still :)
Martin, I really enjoy watching all your videos, and I felt this one was quite special. I enjoyed it very much. You look young and strapping. I liked your banter with your two friends. No-one got flustered, angry or upset and you all took the damage in your stride. There is nothing like having good buddies with you when you stay in the woods. I'm sorry to hear of your friends early passing. I enjoy my own cabin in the highlands and I am right on the front of a very large lake and it is so peaceful, and living here gives me a contented and a relatively stressful life. Unfortunately so many of my best friends are no longer alive and I live here alone and miss our times together, when they would come and stay for a while and we would go hunting and fishing together, with great times and very enjoyable company with lots and lots of laughter. Thanks for all your videos, but I got a special kick out of this one.
Thank goodness for great memories and great friends. Thank You Sir for sharing them with us. I really enjoyed the video and laughs. Praying for a place like that of my own one day. God Bless...

Thank you for sharing. The brevity of life.
Your final comment about the loss of these two friends prematurely was so very poignant. ❤️

We all have sure changed in the last 30 years. It is hard to lose good friends.
Yes that is right, this video shows how true.
Well, I went from laughin' to cryin'. Things will be so much better when we all get home together. A treat to see the younger you. Handsome now & then. 😉
Thanks, this started as a bear break-in but ended up so much more for me once it was finished.
Great memories Martin... really enjoyed your past... glad you shared it with us...
Glad to get more of the cabin story out there.
Martin, I hope you turn all your old tape into digital. You should preserve the memories for all to see. It started as a bear story but I soon realized it was more about what we had there.
Yes, this video is truly special for you. Wish I had taken more when I was younger. Enjoy your Thanksgiving, Sir.
It is very special to me. It was almost two hours of vhs tape so this edited version punches pretty hard.
I didn't expect to cry today. Closing shot is priceless.
You are not the only one needing a kleenex after this one.

Yes a lot of tales concerning those two.
How surreal, your experience at the cabin starts to become more clear as I watched that VHS tape.
It brings back a lot of the fine details for me.
Really enjoyed the old VHS tape. Looking back 30-40 years. Good memories. Thanks

Wow Cyril!! How much bacon did you have in there?? Poor berry and nut year??
Bittersweet as we age to think about our family and friends that are gone. Both my Father and my Son have been gone longer than they lived.
It is hard, we have some like that in our families too.
Sensational old footage Martin and wonderful memories of good friends and great times together.

I had a 120lbs black bear at 20yrds this season, was cool to see and watch and I gave him a pass and let him just wonder by
The bear got what he wanted!...Great memories….Always young……Those Coleman stoves are tough but just not tough enough. Great video….Peace
Seeing some of our old gear at the cabin was interesting. We even used a little oven with the Coleman for pizzas and stuffed chickens.
Must have been 6 bears that didn't like this video (11/22/17)

Glad you were able to see some of my old friends and the good times we had at that cabin.
Thanks for sharing Martin & some great memories capture on video
It made it easy to put the story together.
Try to get out there if you can, the younger the better.
Good to have film of friends and family,so when they pass on you can still be able to hear and see them. Thanks for sharing very interesting I was waiting for that bear to come running out that tree line.
That vhs camera was new and he had it going all the time, I am glad he did now.
30 years, you haven't aged a bit! Lol keep up the good work
Thanks for noticing my agelessness.
So awesome that you got this document and Martin glad you have it for the memory banks thanks for sharing!
I am so glad to have this to watch as I age.
Thanks, I think many that knew them will find this very moving.
We should all be so lucky as to have a friend to honor our memory after we've gone. Seemed like some good guys.
You can see how great they were in the old video, they are missed by so many.
wow that was a night too remember !!! that video is one i bet you glad you kept and made !!!
Without that vhs tape the story would not have been worth telling.
Love the videos not only are they entertaining but also very informative thank you I will continue to watch all of them .
Great old video. I really enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing it.
I am glad it is being enjoyed.
Each campfire light's a new
The flame of friendships true
The Joy I've had in knowing you
Will last my whole life through.
And as the embers die away
We wish that we might ever-stay
But since we can not have out way
We'll come again some other day.
Thanks for that.
Thanks again Marty, it's so nice to watch this from time to time and see and hear my dad, Jeff. I cry like a baby every time!
Nick Brown.
Gone but not forgotten. 2 best friends. Rip.
Lotts of Laughs.....you & your Friends were able 2 maintain a sense of Humor about a new Adventure!!
So glad he had that new camera along, this is a special video.
I could watch & listen to story like this all day. Love it! Thank you for sharing with us Sir and best regards -Yves
Thanks, I have been remembering some more happenings from the early days that I hope to relate..
Thank you, happy to share such a place.
Always fun to relive of memories with good friends. Time does fly fast. Good video
Thanks
God bless you, and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Oct 14, 87...My birthday; I was three. Really cool having these memories on tape. Loved this. What a great way to honor your friends.
Special memories in that for me.
Sorry you lost your friends so early. Thanks for the videos!
Thanks for the response, they are missed by so many.
What wonderful memories, thank you ...
Thank you for commenting.
You sir, are a gentleman ....those two boys are watching this somewhere.....May your god bless you sir.
Thank you kindly
And now you walk around the trails like no big deal. I would still be holding my gun. You are one of a kind. Love the videos
If a bear ever confronts me out on the trail I will go back to packing that 44 magnum but unless its near dark I have taken my chances and traveled light.
That was cool. Thanks for sharing your memories on memory lane. Sorry that your friends went back home so soon. Angel from The Bay
Glad to share such good times from the early cabin years.
Martin, great video!. Sorry, about your friends. I think you've given me inspiration to gather the 'group of friends' for one last trip to Canada.
Make that happen, keep it simple and doable for all involved.
Glad you have the tape to keep your memories fresh🐶👊... Brilliant humour even though the place was wrecked. Bad bear 🐻!
Thanks, yes you have now gotten to know Hawk a little better.
I do a lot of thinking back when I am at that peaceful cabin, so many mentioned in the cabin journals are gone now.
Great story!! Great friends!!
Thanks
Thanks for sharing the video!
So sorry for you r loss...they seemed liked great friends.
Happy Thanksgiving
You are welcome, great friends they were.
Thank you for sharing that, I'll bet you were a wonderful group of guys to hang around with.
We did have some good times, at the factory, on the river tubing behind Jeff's big ski boat and at the cabin with the bear.
What a gem!
Oh, the bear video that turned into so much more as I did the editing. Thanks
Thanks for sharing your specially treasured moments with us.
This one is pretty sentimental.
Great visit to the past. Thank you for sharing.
Happy to share such great times.
That ending of your buddies walking away in slow mo Hit me like a ton of bricks! Best memories for sure. You can always look back and cherish those moments. Stay strong and keep posting. They are looking down on you enjoying the cabin still :)
Thanks, the response to that final scene tells me that others picked up on what great guys they were.
Thanks for the nice note, this one hit many people pretty hard. As we age we sure miss those we have lost.
Thank goodness for great memories and great friends. Thank You Sir for sharing them with us. I really enjoyed the video and laughs. Praying for a place like that of my own one day. God Bless...
You are welcome, great friends and the bear made for a fun visit to the cabin.
Such great memories of good friends at your cabin! Thanks for sharing them. Did the bear ever come around again? Did you ever get a look at it?
He came back a few years later and tore a hole in the cabin but found no food that time as I was storing it in milk cans outside.
Wow ! I bet three guys slept with one eye open for that trip ! Thanks for sharing .
It had been a long day and we finally fell asleep but note all the guns at the bedsides.
Good times great friend thank Martin for sharing good times
