The reason others attempt these repairs is because you make it look so easy. Only after thousands of hours of such repairs can you get the skills required to make it look so good and do it right!
Im always surprised why some people try to repair themselves, without proper tools nor experience. And then they get surprised that a good repair is not cheap. So I once told a friend : you pay 5% for the repair, and 95% for the experience. Experience is priceless and very often underrated.
As always the best is here! Well done Alex! Thx for sharing your knowledge! I am an electronic enthusiast, which has studied electronics and have a passion for the repairs! Thanks to your videos (and need to mention also other skilled ER shops on YT) i am learing so much! I hope one day to be in the business aswell :) your help is appreciated!
I will never understand how people take such horrible care of their expensive electronics! Insert and remove cables GENTLY! If you're going to be plugging and unplugging repeatedly, use an adapter, so what is plugged into the machine/device isn't taking the abuse! A simple, short HDMI adapter/extension will save you so much headache!
That's some nasty old flux when it takes a wire brush to remove! Oh, and people may tire of checking each pin, but I learned to do this from you and sure enough, A connector I replaced had one pin that didn't solder. Saved me from putting the device back together and then having to dismantle again! Thanks for your super videos!
"Saved me from putting the device back together and then having to dismantle again!" I learned my lesson the hard way... Since then I always check and double-check before putting any device back together.
The most amazing thing is your family can work together so well all the different generations. My family work against each other because they can’t see the end result you have.
The big boss has his work cut out for him having to disassemble and reassemble all that and still keep track of it takes a lot of focus and organization. Imagine having 10 or more different things all apart at the same time and still being able to get it all back together correctly?... then fighting for room for it all is really good.
Yuck, what a mess. BTW, there is a somewhat easier way to solder that cap on the top side of the board near the connector. If you heat the two pads that it connects to, the heat will transfer down to the cap's pads. So I usually tin the pads, sit the cap on top, and then heat the two pads on the HDMI connector that it connects to with the soldering iron for a few seconds. The cap will just settle down on the pads with no risk at all of having it fly off into the 9th dimension.
They fail because they come into contact with ham-fisted gorillas who have no respect for the integrity of the hardware they own. Instead of carefully lining up connector with socket and easing it in they roughly “ram it home” without concern for potential consequences. These people are only concerned with the functionality of the device and have no pride in ownership of it, beyond that. If they were given a Rolls-Royce it would quickly look like a builder’s van; an Accuphase amplifier would likewise end up like some adolescent’s old boombox. A Rolex Cosmograph Daytona… …well, I think you get the idea. 🙄✌️
9:40 - How do you know this is the same / compatible diode? It looks like a completely different place on a completely different board. How should someone without the experience figure it out?
Looks like Rosin Flux, I like the smell. Reminds me of my childhood. There's Flux remover in a can (CRC I think). I've used it for the past 30 years. Works better than IPA.
I laugh everytime when you say, "Big Boss is the Boss of all Bosses". Will always strike me funny I don't care how many times you say it. Y'all are kicking it out since Big Boss returned. Appears to be a GREAT team you three.
I was doing this repair today and I nudged that black capacitor to the right of the hdmi diode and trying to put it back in place, I lost it. Where can I pull a replacement from?
Some clients don't want to pay anything extra. They just tell you what they need you to do and that's it. I learned to not do anything else but what the client is asking me to do, ESPECIALLY for those clients who know what needs to be done better than me and ESPECIALLY for those clients who don't want to pay extra for extra work.
I'm genuinely confused, do people repeatedly remove, attach the HDMI cable to the console in cycles or what? I keep my consoles in one place ever since i've bought them and don't see any issues with it.
"I'm genuinely confused, do people repeatedly remove, attach the HDMI cable to the console in cycles or what? I keep my consoles in one place ever since i've bought them and don't see any issues with it." It only takes the mom doing her cleaning the dust and asking you to move the console from its place then trying to insert the cable back while in a little bit of rush because all of your friends are already playing and the HDMI port gets broken.
Ridiculous... but what really breaks my heart 💔 is that I haven't been able to get my hands on a PS5 since the day it was released (excluding the $3000 you can pay to a price gouger on EBay, of course!) and yet these people are no doubt abusing the hell out of theirs like they can just run down to Wal-Mart and pick up another for $40!!!
Hey alex, I'm from Lebanon and i really like your videos. They're quite entertaining and informative. I have one question cuz I'm still new to soldering. Why do you use both soldering iron and hot air when using wick 2:54
From my experience I think in the previous repair attempt they used Chinese flux.... well flux... you can call it more Vaseline than flux. That makes the nice dark color and horrible smell
Hi Alex, I'm watching from Ireland and back in 1999 I was in California on holiday. Back then lead was banned in the state of California because they said it was a known carcinogen. How come you are able to use it to solder??
you must use acetone or the same that is used in nail polish remover! 99% isopropyl alcoho or whatever they are called does not take flux very well. in problem areas, you must use acetone, but do not use it on plastic
I understand how people can get out of their depth a bit and rip a pad off or something, but I would be incredibly embarrassed to send out something that was just so mucky with burnt up flux like that.
I am all for people to give it a go but should practice and learned first from dead/scrap boards first before attempting job like this. Most importantly, do not be deluded just because you have seen someone doing on youtube you think you can do it. Practice makes perfect.
It's kinda dark, it reminded meh of a brownish old time flux, I used as kid with a solder gun the kind that has a clicker & lamp. See DiodeGoneWild, he shows this kind of old time solder gun
But this ain't the badest of things, I once tried plumbing flux haha (intended for metal pipes) on pcm traces, it fractured the traces, and that was a lesson learned to use proper flux
Fresh flux - isopropyl alcohol. Old flux- a little bit of heat plus isopropyl alcohol after heating. Burned flux, sometimes can be removed by a little bit of heat plus isopropyl alcohol after heating or you can use a brush (sponge) like the one Alex is using in this video. I'm not using a metallic one. The one I use is more like a hard plastic one even if it looks shiny. You can buy soft metal sponges (brushes) especially made for that purpose of removing nasty pieces of old burned flux. Whatever you choose to use, try it first on scrap, not functioning boards.
Big Boss has the most unenviable task, having to remove and then replace all those PS5 screws. You guys do amazing work as always.
I am sure he has done it so many times it is like second nature to him.
I am a retired E.E. with 40 years in the semiconductor industry. Hats off to a shop that is so competent. Your skills are great, congrats!
The quality of your work is on another level. I never tire of watching you make everything look so easy when I know it isn't.
At min. 3:00 one cap was desoldered from the board. It got stuck on the solder wick (next move you discarded that piece of wick)
yeah one under HDMI port itself 6:35
it went to 9th dimension
yep spotted that straight away. he loves sending caps to another dimension
@@martinmalone6324 I sent a CR2025 coin battery to the 9th dimension in my shop and still haven't found it, and it's the size of a quarter!
Noticed that too!

Hey Alex, 2:52 this is where the tiny cap disapeared like to the 9th dimension 🤣👍🏼
Great work btw.

I hope you chare extra for the prior repair attempts, since it makes your job a little harder. Great job Alex and Big Boss!!
The most amazing thing is your family can work together so well all the different generations.
My family work against each other because they can’t see the end result you have.
I like to see how the wick stole the component at 2:59. It's amazing how fast it was gone :-P.
The soldering alex does is top notch
My condolences to whoever lost the leg.
Alex's native language is motherboard outstanding job as always.
And that's why northridge repair is number 1 repair go to for all repairs. 👌🏻❤️🇬🇧
very nice 👍
Idk watching Alex's videos giving me so much satisfaction. You have such a nice name Alex.

Great work Alex and BigBoss, the wisdom and little jokes in every video make this so fun to watch. Let me check on my dad.... lol
Thanks for the update
Your an inspiration, I have learned so much from your videos over the years. Much love from Wisconsin 💚

That previous repair looks like i did it , and i can’t solder at all . Good job on repairing this disaster
Amazing work from a dreamteam. You work. You all work like a clockwork. Incredible. Thanks for that video. Greets
Why do so many HDMI ports fail on various boards, have to assume user error rather than design flaws.
They fail because they come into contact with ham-fisted gorillas who have no respect for the integrity of the hardware they own. the quality of video with antiglare light is awesome even on low resolution
2:59 capacitor entered the 9th dimension 😂
You made that look so easy Alex, great fix.
When you guys do these PS5 repairs. On reassembly you use Liquid Metal like Sony or standard thermal paste for the cooling solution?
How do you know the value of the missing diode and capasitor ?
I was doing this repair today and I nudged that black capacitor to the right of the hdmi diode and trying to put it back in place, I lost it. Where can I pull a replacement from?
"Big boss is the boss of all bosses!"
"yallah!" lmao
Why do you use a solder iron and hot air both when using solder wick? Is there iron not getting hot enough?
What a guy, loving videos from sunny Yorkshire in the uk
Another "YES"...Tnx for video, Great Team 😊
What did he use to remove additional solder from PCB?(copper wire thingy)
Great fixes Alex! I would have asked Big Boss to clean the one fan for an extra $10! Thank you 🤓
Good job! Jeez what a mess! I can see why you want to clean first to accurately see what's wrong.
Cleaning first and performing an accurate visual inspection is the very first step in attempting any repair.
🤣🤣🤣 Let me check on my dad. Is he doing his job packaging... yes.
How about the second board? Did you fix that one too?
How does that happen to the hdmi connector? Weak from factory or pulling out the cable wrong?
Great job. I think that PS5 fan needed a clean haha :)

My thoughts exactly. Do people like to swing their console around by the HDMI cable or something?
I don't understand how those new devices in most of the cases yhe HDMI port always broke, could it be the users hammered to plug it?
What did that person use as flux on that PS5 Treacle ?
why there is so many PS5's with broken HDMI connectors ?
Precision removing SMD component at 2:58 ... :) ... Just kidding, this can happen by cleaining that mess up.
I noticed that too

2:56 cap said bye bye
Is it like the HDMI ports on PS5s are so prone to fail such that both boards are about attempting to replace them?
moving the system too much is the issue... or the push it against a wall... breaking the hdmi
Alex you and big boss are solid! …lovely people.
There seems to be a lot of ps5 being repaired. Are they really fragile or is people just mis treating them and breaking the hdmi ports
Hey there, love your videos, do you guys fix PS2, PS3, PS4, Switch, etc consoles as well?
Some people have NO business attempting a repair like this. Wow !
Hello can you please tell me how I can fix this

Did the customer use barbeque sauce for flux ?!🤣😂🤣
Who flux do you use?
I love to see hard work which is why I stay subbed
How much do you charge extra for board like this ?
at 2:57 cap got stuck with the wick. 😄
From my experience I think in the previous repair attempt they used Chinese flux.... well flux... you can call it more Vaseline than flux. That makes the nice dark color and horrible smell
is it beneficial puting the boards through an ultrasonic cleaner after inspection and after repair?

What are people doing to their devices that HDMI connectors are always needing to be replaced??
Last video: "I don't have 3 hands, only 2"
This video: holds solder wick, soldering iron and hot air gun at the same time. (hmmm?? :)
Cant believe those resistors and diodes are that small, tiny . Smaller than sand almost dust....9:20....6:10...
