When I first started playing guitar, a wise man told me to learn the master of puppets album, and I will have it down. Took me a whole summer to get through it. One of the best live shows Metallica ever put on was Seattle 91, I think it was in 91 I don't really remember. It was a long time ago. Me and a good friend of mine snuck in to that show.

How did they do that: this song is an endurance race, and that slow brake down is just a resting spot. It's really pretty, but the rest of the song is like an endurance event, especially the way hetfield only down picks.
In my opinion, metal music comes from hurt and pain. Instead of being defeated from the hurt, you stand up and say fuck you to the thing that affected you that way. It's about transferring energy, same amount of energy for pain, just the hate that comes from it vibrates different.

This song is about substance abuse. The user is the puppet and the drug is the master. The first guitar solo is the high and the second guitar solo is the need for a fix. James hetfield is famous for his lyric ability. And the way he puts them down is almost always still able to made to fit your perspective.
