      Randy H. The thing is everyone is different, a cutter can be thrown by putting pressure on your middle finger, I've thrown a cutter that way for 5 years and I've never felt pain in my elbow, even throwing a 12-6 curve and a slider very often, if you take care of your arm you can throw whatever you please, it's when you over use it, because you SHOULD know that tommy john is snapping a tendon in your elbow... glad to shed a little light

    • @TFreshour08
      @TFreshour08 7 лет назад +7

      I think you are forgetting the most important rule in pitching. Genetics. Some people have natural cutters, some people have natural armside run. Grip manipulation ie. putting pressure on the ball is just messing with physics and spin a little bit to accentuate genetics/armslot and so on. Tons of people have rubber arms. But a lot more don't. You can take care of your arm as well as anyone and still get tendonitis, bursitis, TJ and have done everything right. Moral of the story - this guy knows what he is talking about.. listen to him. No kid should throw a curveball until he can throw a straight/sinker fastball, and locate a changeup. Those three got me to D1, curveball became a solid 0-1 pitch but unless you wanna go pro, you really don't need anything but a get me over curve ball for strike one or to change speeds. Anyone who speaks differently doesn't know how to pitch and relied on throwing way way way too much.

    • @jlander1054
      @jlander1054 7 лет назад +2

      Fresh M3 I agree that some people have natural movement, I have a little bit and some people do have rubber arms and can't hurt themselves but the cutter was my biggest issue because every pitch can be thrown multiple ways so a single pitch doing damage isn't the issue in my opinion, the issue is poor mechanics and over use, if you have the right grip and technique you can throw any pitch at any time and be okay

    • @TFreshour08
      @TFreshour08 7 лет назад +5

      I think what you said is partially true. You can have the right grip on splitfinger and it will inevitably without question over time destroy your elbow. Same is with a curveball. The primary reason is that our arms pronate naturally when we throw, so any pitch that counters this natural pronation like a split, cutter, curve, slider - put more stress on the elbow than the other pitches do. If you didn't luck out genetically it will catch up to you. But like you said, good mechanics can minimize the majority of risk/compounded damage - but don't fool yourself and think it takes care of all of it haha. But yeah, realistically as long as you practice the basics, balance at the top, balance at the bottom, good follow throw/finish, consistent arm slot, don't overuse, good arm conditioning prior to the season, good between outing routine, things like ICE, compression sleeves if you need, solid warmups, stretching all that stuff that is a staple to a healthy arm... you'll prolly be fine. But high schoolers spinning off curve balls every other pitch because it looks cool and gets people out is good for high schoolers... it isn't if you want that arm to last through college/proball because it is eye opening how much more throwing you actually do at the higher levels.

    Pedro and Greg Maddux are the best pitchers of our time. Pedro might of pitched in bigger games though. Pedro was a beast!

    Arguably the best pitcher of his generation. He pitched in an era where there were straight up killers on the mound

    I heard a story about Pedro. When he first came to the country, he knew no English. One of his coaches took him under his wing and let him stay in his house. Supposedly his wife would give Pedro a new word every morning and by evening, he knew the meaning, could spell it and use it in a sentence. He is very intelligent. Early on, he planned on becoming a doctor.

    At 14 years old I was regularly throwing 89-90 mph. I pitched on every travel team, sometimes playing literally 7 days a week for various teams traveling the country. I blew out my arm at 14 and spent over a year rehabbing. I then blew it out for good again at 17 while throwing about 92-93 mph. Their were scouts at the game to watch me and another player, and I knew it was over for me almost instantly when it happened.
    It's just not worth throwing so often, and throwing breaking balls at a young age. If I have a son that plays baseball (which I hope to) I will not let him pitch in a game at all until he's at least 17 years old. He can focus on hitting and learn the fundamentals of pitching with me in our spare time without all the wear and tear.

    That's how you should always pitch as a starer. Only show as many different pitches as you need to. If they can't hit the fastball, don't even show them the curve or changeup until they prove they can hit it. Then you have such a weapon in the late innings, when you're throwing pitches they haven't even seen in the game yet.

    Wish I'd seen this when I was younger. As a lefty I threw a 2 seamer, a 12-6ish over the top curve, 3/4 slurve and circle change. Never had any arm problems my whole life. Picked up a conventional slider (same action as the cutter) soph year in college, blew out my UCL from that within a year. Wish I never touched it.
