Took 5 tries, but it went out. Thank you. 👍

If the button is defective it’s worth getting a replacement considering how cheap the button is.
This video saved me a fortune, thank you
Happy to help 👍🏽
Mate you're a hero. Been trying to figure this out all day! Pushing the button did absolutely nothing, and I was forced to drive around with no handbrake and a continuous beeping. Hopefully a button change will fix the issue!

That’s always the way so any time I find ways of helping people self diagnose I will post videos accordingly, won’t always work for everyone but it’s worth a try before paying someone else to fix the problem 👍🏽
@@MATechRUclips Just to update... I changed my park switch and still have the warning fault on my dash... other than that can I ask why does it matter where you push the button as it should be a solid connection on the terminal block so is button moves the block moves! Thank you
No, some cheaper switches don’t have even distribution on the switch itself. This won’t be the case on all switches but some do have that issue.
Cheers mate was outside this morning for 20 mins trying to apply the parking break. Watched this and it helped, i cleaned around the button turned car off then on presed dead centre and voilà it worked! 👍🏻
Glad I could help.

great video. i have a passat as well. the problem i encounter is that while im driving the parking brake light randomly comes on but when i engage & re-engage the parking brake again it disappears. this happens like every coupe of weeks even though the parking brake works perfectly fine. ill give replacing the switch a try hopefully it works
When mine did fail originally it was out of no where and hadn’t done it before, it wasn’t until I replaced the switch that I realised as the replacement felt different to press with it being new and firmer.
I’ve found it usually fixes the issue for most people who have the b6’s
My dads Passat wagon is doing this while we’re driving. The wagon is definitely not stock anymore lol. I’ll have a video up on my channel here soon. We think it’s a sensor since the brake were upgraded. Not too sure right now though. It is good to see something similar to our problem on RUclips.
I was told by “mechanics” that it would be rear parking brake failure or other expensive fixes, in the end I decided to take a punt on the switch after doing my own research online and fixed the issue for around £10 which is a quarter of what most of those mechanics and garages wanted just to run diagnostics!
Try the switch, if it doesn’t fix it then you can always just return the switch if bought from Amazon.
Maybe remove be the fuses for parking brake. 🤔
Hits how you can fix it permanently if you have Auto Hold.
- If parking brake button fails, turn off car, on next turning on, click on auto hold, it will release parking break when you try to move forward.
- If you have issues with parking brake from t2t, use auto hold every time, it will activate brake each time you put out seat-belt, open drivers door or turn off the car. And it will also prevent your car from going back or forward on hills, just press brake ones.
This only works on cars that have a button for auto hold, my car does it automatically and there is no button. It’s basically always detecting auto hold.
Also this wouldn’t fix the switch issue or the dash error which would be a MOT failure in the UK.
@@MATechRUclips As I say if someone have Auto Hold. If you have it you will have a button for it, there is a difference between auto hold and release brake on pedal push which all models have.
That´s really good info, I have a VW Passat and the parking brake comes on once in a while even if it´s clearly propperly working. So, i don´t really want to change it, and pressing the autohold botton will help me out tons! Thanks for sharing
Thank you. Mine was stuck on, saved me calling a tow truck.
You're welcome!

seems like a common fault, bought one with the same problem, sometimes works, sometimes needs more tries, thanks 👍
It’s very common and because the button is used on so many VAG cars it’s common across other brands as well.
@@MATechRUclips thats right
Excellent Video! informative and to the point - I just completed a rear brake service - I was getting the flashing EPB button and parking Brake light on dash and the annoying CHIME!
I'm finding that the drivers side rear parking brake motor is not getting power to the wired connector - hooking up separate battery power to the left rear EPB motor it does activate using a couple wires direct to connector opens and close operates and moves freely.
My question is - does the switch, if internals are failing - cut power distribution in my case to the left rear EPB motor? Right rear works perfectly using the EPB switch.
UPDATE:
Randomly after a test drive - I stopped the vehicle pressed and held for a moment the EPB button - left side operated - chime and lights turned off. Looks to me that the button may very well be the issue.
👍🏽
Keep an eye on it as sometimes frayed cables or connections can become active after driving so it could still be a different issue but for the price of the switch I’d always say try that first as it’ll save you alot of time and money if that is the fault.
did your error didn't came back?? i have same situation, i think the plug connector with wire is broken. when i touch and test, no error, then again error comes in ...
let me know please. as i want to try buy new switch first. but looks something with wiring is off on left rear.
Nice it worked

Hi I have had EPB probs on and off for years but only on my right hand rear calliper. Have replaced caliper as it was leaking fluid onto motor. Before we got car in 2016 it had been messed with and I had to splice a new plug onto motor connector. Its now saying it is seeing a short cct at that motor intermittently- doesn't make a lot of sense really as I've checked everything including with spare motor. What I'm going to do is, change the loom as its getting messy with that splice right at the wheel. Do you know where to find the ECU so that I can go right back to it.Thanks for reading this.
That sounds a nightmare, but in my experience VW made it extremely difficult with their coding to fix some electrical components on these models (most likely deliberately to ensure repairs go through them).
Ecu I believe will either be buried under the glovebox area or on some cars they even have them drivers side.
Usually behind the dash area.
In rare occasions it’s accessible via engine bay but not 100% sure on this model.
Hopefully someone else might be able to chime in and help you out.
Thanks a lot, i was stuck at a gas station. 😅😅😅

Hi, I have recently bought a Volkswagen Golf GTD 2016. I have the auto hold button but nothing happens when I press it. No light appears. No error codes on dashboard. Would this be a button replacement or would I need to get this checked.
Auto hold simply holds the brakes for you when you’re on a hill so you don’t roll backwards when moving your foot from brakes to accelerator.
My car has it automatically enabled all the time but older models had a button for this feature.
Hi I've got a audi a6 I changed the caliper on the left rear now the hand broke doesn't engage or disengage . Also the light on the brake button doesn't come on . I've got the big red parking brake light on the dash and nothings seems to work todo with the parking brake . Do you have any ideas . Its so got the code v282
Try the button first as that’s easiest fix but how did you change the rear brake?
Did you use a coder to reprogram the caliper or did you do it manually via some jump terminals?
If you’ve don’t it manually then you’ve either destroyed the caliper or it simply needs programming in and then it should work.
Ay so I got an 09 CC and the parking brake works fine and I don't got that light on but my actual light on the dash that says brake doesn't turn on but it works when I put the key in the ignition. Is there any way I can fix that?
If you mean on the button itself then yes replacing the button should fix that, if you mean you get an error code but everything works fine then you’ll probably need to get the error codes scanned and reset.
Sometimes a false detection will remain in the memory and throw up error codes when nothing is actually wrong and can just be cleared.
Hello, my Problem is that very often when I stop at traffic light e brake engage iself, sometimes 3 times in one stop. that never happened before, and when I want to disengage, starts to give error and I have to stop start enginge couple of time until it is off. Any opinion? Thanks a lot
The EPB shouldn’t engage automatically, my car does have automatic “hill hold” which holds the brake so you can move your foot from brake pedal to clutch without having the car roll back but that disengages after around 5 secs automatically.
If you haven’t calibrated your rear pads when you service your rear brakes then you could have it sticking due to it not knowing how far out to release the calliper but I’ve not heard of them automatically engaging unless you have a short in your wiring which is triggering the motor when it shouldn’t be.
Did you fix this? Same thing happens to me. When ever I stop it sets on and i get a brake fault and my b6 accelerates so slowly obviously because it’s braking on its own. I have to stop and turn on and off for it to go back to normal. It eventually happens again tho
@@power2daaplayer304 No, not yet, but today I got new switch, will change it tommorow with high hopes that will work. I let you know did the problem went away with new switch
@@lameasscook did you fix it? I had to disconnect the ebrake motors for it to stop but now I get an annoying non stopping beeping sound when I'm driving
@@power2daaplayer304 Hey.. Since I replaced the button, it did not repeat that erorr. So hopefully that was the problem. But, I must say, I drove the car only twice and for very short period. Today I have to drive 300km and this will be very good test. I will update. That button costed only 7eu on amazon.
I haven't used my car for a while and the battery was dead. I purposely took the handbrake off and left it in gear while it was stood. Jumped the car off yesterday and got parking brake fault and yellow sign on dash with flashing parking brake switch and constant pinging whilst driving. Tried what you did on video but still doing it.
Most vw’s run diagnostics when you turn the car off so it’s ready to start the next time quicker, if you’ve had a low/flat battery at any point you’ll have other errors you’ll need to clear before the car will think everything is okay.
First thing would be fully charged battery followed by code resets and then leave the key in ignition for a few seconds when switching it off, take key out, lock the car and then run through normal startup process. If it still does it then you may need a vagcom system (main dealers or specialists) to reset or diagnose any issues that may have occurred whilst it had no power.
Hi, same happened to my car after flat battery. Did you manage to fix it mate?!
So mine is having a faulty parking brake issue but with mine the p icon appears on the dash and since then my car will crank but will not start so randomly 3 wks later I tried to start it and this time the p icon was gone and the car started so I drove it home and then when I got ready to leave later on in the day it did the same thing all over again and will not start and the p icon is staying on the dash so I pressed the parking brake button and it worked but it will not release the brake at all and the car still will not start please help if you can
Car not starting won’t be related to the parking brake, that will be a separate issue you’ll need to diagnose.
As for the parking symbol staying on the dash or not actually releasing when you manually deactivate, This sounds like a possible epb solenoid failure or the calliper has seized.
Inspect the rear parking brakes and see if either are sticking and if so they’ll need the appropriate parts replacing.
You can manually disengage the epb by disassembling the caliper but it’s not recommended as if it wasn’t faulty and you open it there’s a chance any dirt that gets in could resulting it failing shortly after
Hey Buddy, I replaced the old one. But the yellow lamp is still turning on. And I read the problem. The code is 02945
Did your symptoms match what I described? If not then you may have a different issue.
The fault code seems strange, they normally with a letter, like P246e.
Mate I have a similar issue but it’s the opposite. My brakes release no problem, but the computer reads as if the EBS is still activated. The (P) symbol comes on and the BRAKE blinks with the parking brake light same (P) symbol. I can drive without the warning lights by taking two fuses off but it turns off my traction control…
Removing fuses is never the answer, if this video doesn’t help them get it investigated as it’s most likely a different sensor or wiring fault somewhere along the line.
Did you ever figure it out? I have the same problem. If not. What fuses did you take out ?
My handbrake works perfectly yet light is on, and when i press it pings, rear pads are worn do u think thats whats causing this?
Have you tried the method in this video?
im keep getting same error, but when i switch car off leave 10min no error comes, if i stop car and start ignitiaion immediate the error comes back, was touching left rear selenoid plug, and then error was away and now drove was back again, maybe should i change connector?
If touching the sensors affects the fault then yes that should be checked for faults.
Just quick question if I take the switch on the car NO light at all in the first place new switch only 20 days old like new and same number on it. Very weird ;/
and caliper right and motor is changed back on the car all motor fine and caliper right side sure left side okey too. All brakes OK. is passat B6 2,0Tdi 06.
Module code show up J540 but now hmm maybe same code. No code on brake button before wee see more.. So no light on switch at all when install it idicator for what? But then press switch all okey brakes takes off. But then ice cold caliper and motor not work its new battery too. hmm Can you help??
The backlight of the parking break button should light up as soon as ignition is on, if it doesn’t then either the button is faulty or something else in the chain is.
The button is obviously cheaper and easier to replace so that’s always where you start but if That doesn’t fix the issue then you’ll need to have someone look at it to diagnose the issue.
@@MATechRUclips Update its light on it now the button its like new nothing wrong about that, the caliper and motor left side was terrible so both sides are now changed it seems like motor do something with the button something that way it all good now all fine button and motors.
Me l was the same problem but after trying all methods it was the right side Handbrake who was broken and it locked my right wheels
I’ve heard a lot of stories about EPB’s locking up and stranding the vehicles, thankfully I haven’t had the issue myself.
So how did you fix it? Because my right wheeled is locked
I get this periodically and the car refuses to start. Only by pulling the key out and back in again several times does the warning light go out and can start the engine. It then registers a fault code 01314. After clearing the code it comes back again several days later with the same faulty parking brake message.
The parking brake still switches on and off with the switch okay as I can hear the electric motors running.
Does the light on the switch itself illuminate?
@@MATechRUclips Yes, the light on the switch works okay.
Your issue will be something else in that case, this method only works for faulty switches and that only occurs when the light on the switch goes out.
@@MATechRUclips Okay, many thanks.
Did you ever find your problem? My switch light is on but flashing with the brake light. My parking brake is working perfectly fine though, like you said you can here it activate on/off and it clearly holds the car in place in neutral on a slope.
What happening if I buy new swith and I have light, when I turn off engine light gone...😅
Light should be on when ignition is on, if it doesn’t the switch is faulty.
Bullshit button considering that's robbery in Canada, VW would get any non car person 400-1000 easily for a faulty shit button. They just scoop $ out of your pocket! Worse than their diesel emission issue!
Not as bad as Hyundai vehicles with their last second braking systems locking up at 120 km/h on an open road.
My gf has same problem replaced button and never worked, replaced motor never worked, we've been parking it in gear for about 6 months because it seized before and had to replace caliper and guess what that never worked either, we've been parking it in gear for about 6 months because we don't no what it is but it's up for mot this month so I'm assuming it fails with parking break fault on the dash
If the new switch you connected lights up then the issue isn’t the switch and you should get it checked out as it will definitely fail mot.
This fix is only if when you start the car the button doesn’t illuminate.
@@MATechRUclips No it comes up parking break fault on dash for about 20 seconds and goes off but I suppose that's enough to fail it anyhow
Yes, any error on the dash would fail no matter if it clears itself or not.
@@MATechRUclips The car drives fine we just park it in gear, I'm contemplating getting myself a we computer and just turning lights of for mot
Won’t work as it’ll show error again when left off for a while and restarted.
Fix the issue as it may not be a problem right now but if the rear brakes lock up you’ll be stranded and have to have the car towed as they won’t disengage.
How do I get the parking brake off😢
Press the button dead centre, not on the edges, or drive off with the door closed and your seat belt on, both methods should disable the parking brake.
I replaced the bottom but the ligth still on😢
Is the light illuminated when pressed? If not then the button still isn’t working correctly.
@@MATechRUclips the ligth is iluminated .
The ligth is on in the dashboard
I don t understand what i have to do , i have the same problem
It’s explained in the video
My epb locked up a few months ago, I managed to reset it and drove home. Replaced the epb motor as it was cracked and letting in water. Since then I have nothing, motors not even turning when I press the button just the flashing symbols and fault warning. Changed the switch today, but made no difference. Crappy VW handbrake system !
Most likely corroded connections or a break in the cable if it’s doing nothing.
Remove the motor and see if you can manually force it to retract.
There are guides on how to disassemble and test the motor on RUclips so try them perhaps.
Definitely a terrible design but like dual mass flywheels unfortunately looks to be here to stay 🤦🏽♂️
@@MATechRUclips Thanks for the reply, since my last message I have managed to take another look, and discovered the motors were not plugged in properly. All sorted now, working epb and no bonging or flashing lights!
