I have a 2015 and have enjoyed genuinely every one of my 24,000 miles. One up, two up, hooning or touring, these bikes do it all. They still have the reputation of being a boring bike a view not held by any of the owners ;-)

Talking clutches and general smoothness of the ride. Don’t forget that the boxers have a dry clutch, a bit like a car, and shaft drive. The S1000R is a conventional bike drive-train of a wet clutch and chain drive. Two very different animals. Technique is all when riding a boxer..👍

2014 r1200r was the last dry clutch. No wet clutch on the bike being reveiwed

I have this bike, same color and agree with all you've said except the clunkiness, agricultural feel of the gear change. First and second with the clutch, very smooth, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th with the quick shifter and provided you're not too aggressive on the throttle, very smooth as well. So it's getting used to it, knowing just where you need the power, it's very good. The smoothness of the engine is great and the overall riding comfort, as you say, is excellent. My riding pal has the RS and he changed the bars to the R version to get more upright. Very good video thanks.

I have a 2016 one and I love it! I can easily do 230 miles without stopping then a quick refuel and I'm good to go, not an ache anywhere! The only downside is the incredibly clunky gearbox and the one in this review is much improved over mine! The quick shifter is a lottery, sometimes great, sometimes needs more pressure than feels right. That said, I rode the KTM 790 Duke and that was too sensitive, the slightest touch, and it shifted which was a bit strange. I have decided to put the clunkiness down to character and ignore it, it seems bullet proof, just soo noisy! Other than that, a fantastic machine.I have the Shad panniers (BMW ones are too expensive for the use I give them) and putting them on transforms the bike to a fantastic tourer. Love it! Thats for the review, very interesting and thanks for the relaxed, no swearing style.

I have a 2015 R1200R, fully loaded. Love it. Was considering an S1000R or the XR, but think Im going to wait for the next-gen R1200R, which I've heard will be larger displacement (1250cc) and more hp (145 ish). Hopefully they'll update the dash as well

You think they'll get another 20 hp from a 50cc increase?

    Nice review, thanks :)
In fairness to the clunky gearshift pro, I think it's generally accepted to not use it in 1st and 2nd, but at higher revs in 3rd upwards, where it becomes a whole lot smoother, with auto-blipping on downshifts.
A big difference when compared to the R1200RS, is that the R has a shorter wheelbase, which makes slow speed manoeuvring and 'flickability' much better on the R. The RS would probably feel steadier at high speed on the motorway.
Great bikes and fabulous torquey engines :)

I've had 2 Bimmers - R80GS and R1000GS. I like the look of the Moto Guzzi 855 TT in terms of versatility.

BMW at it's best. Your describtion of the shift-assist goes for my R1200RT as well. Between first and second not to recomend neither up- nor downshifting. The looks of the bike is OK but I liked the R1200R Classic better. 🤠

What an amazing bike for "real" road riding.....R1200 R would be a bike I'd seriously consider if I ever down size off a big American bagger. I agree, that dash is in need of a serious update, yuk! ;)

Curious how bad the wind is at higher speeds> 110km\h or 70mph ? Looking to trade in my cruiser for a BMW not sure which model yet but im tired of fighting the wind on the highway.

@@TheForeigner68 r1200r is 3.3 sec 0-60 according to manufacturer. Top speed on r1200r is irrelevant as it`s a naked bike and going over 200 km/h is a torture. I cruise at 140-160 km/h on a highway with that little screen. .

Love the smoothness of the water-cooled engine, but I think I still prefer the older dash better. I ride a 2013 R12R classic:
