- Опубликовано: 10 сен 2024
- I finally got 285’s on the 4Runner and make them work with minimal trimming. My front lift measures an actual 2” taller than stock.
Tires: Falken Wildpeak AT3W P285-70-17
Wheels: Level 8 MK6 17x8 -10 Offset
I am NOT running any wheel spacers. Big thanks to Discount Tire for nailing the install again. Cruises at 75MPH with no vibrations.

Most informative video on RUclips on this Topic Jake. Thanks for the specs!!
Looks amazing! This is the setup I was looking to do as well. Thanks for the video!
I'm a bit over 2 years on this setup and still love it!
Just put on 285 nitto terra grappler g2’s in SL, 1.6” leveling kit in front. 2016 trail stock wheels. Only rubbed in reverse when turning right. Moved both fender liners forward about .5” and no more rub. Thanks for the info!
Stock wheels are the key there. Anything wider and or with more off set will put them closer to everything that rubs.
That creepy baby hanging in the back freaks me out! I followed your lead and it worked! I took the front mud flaps off. They don't do much anyway. I really didn't want to cut out chunks of the wheel well plastic line most mods do.
Also, I bought a heat gun at Harbor Freight for $8.99 is anyone is looking.
If you are just city driving or highway driving this is fine but if you go off roading constantly going up and down and articulating a lot it’s gonna rub ALOT more. For anyone who goes off roading, the turning just on a street doesn’t really tell the full story. If you are just using it like this then this method is fine but if off roading is also a factor then def gotta put that into consideration
Agreed. What’s a better solution for a 4runner pro to fit 285’s? There is wescott design lift available for pros. But does that give enough articulation when off roading?
@@lcorr090k6 yeah those are a great option imo. Also works with the stock trd pro fox suspension or whatever suspension you have.
😂😂😂..where did you get the hanging baby from I love it 😂😂😂
I own a fj cruiser and will stick with 32's I have no issues with rubbing and my gas mpg isn't bad lol.
I run bfg 275/65/18 with fuel shok wheels that are 9 in wide with -12 they look great with 32's and if I can't get where I want to go then maybe I shouldn't be there. ;)
I know this is an old video..but you really helped me out. Have a brand new SR5 bone stock (no lift) and I want new AT tires (265) and wheels and I was stuck deciding on offset -10 or zero. I wanted a little peak-a-boo like yours, however if you are rubbing with a 2inch lift with -10 offset, I'll be rubbing big time. I think I may go with a zero offset which should sit flush with maybe a hair of a peek-a-boo. Did you need a realignment with -10 offset?
I know the 285 will give you a more ground clearance but the 265's looked better to me! Made it look lifted more to me. Now I'm going to see the difference in height in the two sizes. Great video!
265/70/17 is a 31.5" tire. 285/70/17 is 32.8" tire so you gain about 1" ground clearance.
@@JoeTirone I'm running on 18in rims but my 275/65/18 are 32.2 to 32.5 depending on the tire.
Some people say 18 are to big for off road use but they have always been great and got me where I wanted to go.
@@JoeTironeNope. You split the size difference because half the diameter is in top since it's circle.
I got bfg ko2s, 285s. I trimmed the bumper, took off the front mud flaps and at full lock I rub on the body mount. I'm sure it's because of the -12 offset rim. Awesome looking 4runner man🤟
Definitely the -12 brother, running 285 ko2s as well with 17x8.5 0 offset and I don’t rub on the body mount, just the front fenders
I run a 17 x 8.5 Toyo AT3 10ply, so not super aggressive but there is more tread than the p-metric, and the negative 12 and I had to do the body mount chop as well as that little bit of shaving on the front fender. I was able to keep most of my mud flap and just trim off all of the stuff where the tire would hit. From the outside you really can't tell and there is still a little bit of flying rock protection. You've just got to get creative with how you trim them. I did that before the body mount chop so I may get another set of mud flaps and then try the heating method and reforming them.
after you install the 285 are you calibrate the speedometer? , how affected your transmission?
Looks sweet both ways. I have 265 70 17 Ko2 on stock wheels and stock height. Mine dont rub at all. Must be that -10 offset.
Definitely that -10 i run 285/70r/17 with a 2.5” spacer lift and 17x8.5 0 offset and i only had to do minimum front bumper trimming.
@@RCGJR_ if I go with same size rim as yours with 0 offset and stock size tires and no lift. Do you think am gonna have a rubbing issue. Thanks.
@@teddynaicker2997 ruclips.net/video/p3fSJnOptss/видео.html
He’s running 17x8.5 0 offset, 265/70/17 no lift, no issues whatsoever.
hold up he's getting rubbing with 265/70s on there with 2 inches of lift? I've got "I think stock" lift on my SR5 and I still get rubbing with 265/70s - Just how damn low do you need to go to avoid rubbing?
Your tires 285/70/17 but is load C1 or SL standard load how many ply?
Digging those level 8 wheels. Order same wheels and should be put on tomorrow.
So all you did suspension wise was a 2 inch leveler upfront?
What do you mean you hadn’t been able to do a full lock? Don’t you just turn the steering wheel and listen?
Did he say he thinks there will be minimal cutting lol ? Half a viper cut atleast
Pavement princess? How much is the rub under full lock and full compression?
Thanks for the video! Great info! What is the backspacing on your wheels? 4.5?
Hows the inner clearance of the rim and tire? Does it come close to the upper control arm and why you still had to use a wheel spacer? Im looking at the 17X9 -12 offset but I dont really wanna use a wheel spacer if possible. So without the wheel spacer how much clearance was there to the upper control arm and with your spacer how much clearance afterwards? Taking a digital caliper you can get the millimeter clearance
Not sure what the question is but I've never had wheel spacers.
How do you like your level 8 wheels? I was thinking of those for my 2019 but am having a hard time finding the weight of those wheels I’ve seen conflicting specs 28lbs-35lbs
I have no complaints. I like how they look, price is right, and they haven't had any issues. If you go to the website they list full specs for every size. Looks like they all weight 31lbs.
I will have my 285/70/17 ko2 soon. Just little bit concern, I will have RC 2” strut lift for the front and stock on the rear. My new wheels will have -12 offsets. Will I be good? with minor trimming?
I have-12 offset with ko2s bfg and rub on the body mount a little. I took off the mud flaps, trimmed the front bumper a little bit. I'll have to do a body mount chop. It's only at full lock though.
Looks good. I still have the stock nitto terras on my 19 Pro at 25k miles. Thinking about sizing up to something similar once they wear out but they still look great. Did you ever consider performing the high-clearance cut mod for the front bumper?
Not for me. I don't need it and I only think it looks right with much larger tires. I'm also too much of a fan of the factory front end to change it much.
What exact diameter were the 265s? And what about the 285s? I've heard that falken wildpeaks run on the larger size
If you go to the Falken website they have all the info for all their different variations.
What rear springs do you have?
Looking at putting 285s on as well with similar wheel specs. Just wanted to ask how they’ve been performing after a couple weeks. Still no need for a BMC?
No need for BMC. I couldn't make my tire hit my body mount if I wanted to without bending something badly.
Do you think trimming would have been required if you had stock TRD OR rims with their +ve offset?
Hard to say for sure but I suspect a little bumper trimming would have still been needed.
You running p285 70r17 or LT285 70r17?
Are you still getting about 16-17 MPG?? After putting the 285’s??
Yup, right at 16is calculated on average. If my commute speed was a little lower I'd get better. I filled up this morning and drove about 35 miles at 70ish due to traffic rather than the normal 80. Computer says 17.2 right now which is usually pretty accurate.
@@TwistedJake Ohh wow even with the bigger tires is still pretty good. That makes me happy. Thought it would be 13MPG.. thanks!!
Nice rig. Great video
Thank you!
Looks nice! Is your rear end lifted at all? Trying to figure out if 2" lift in front only will give a reverse rake or if it will level
The front needs 1.5-1.75" to level it out. 2" in the front alone will give you some reverse rake
Is this stock height or did you install a lift or leveling kit prior to the 285s?
he probably did a 2.5 or 3 inch lift. I did a 3 inch leveling kit with no rubbing. if your looking at trying to fit 285s go with adjustable suspension. i’m looking at bilsteins 6112s right now bc the leveling kit makes it ride like shit. also if you go 2.5 or 3 inches you need to do a diff drop, and if you have a trd skid plate it won’t mount without longer bolts.
@@nathanbosson2078 I have 3” spacer on the front with diff drop, will 285 rub on my lift?
So full suspension articulation is put of the question with those?
If you're crawling over rocks and want to full stuff with zero rubbing you'll need to cut more plastic. I have yet to be on any trail or obstacle that it has been an issue.
Is that BLACK ON SCOOP a sticker/decal?
Where did you get it?
SUN hits mine and BLINDS ME.
It is a vinyl wrap I did myself. Super simple. ruclips.net/video/vgQ86UF5euA/видео.html
Are These tires are p-rated tire or lt tire. Thanks
P Rated.
Which molles do u have in the rear?
Rago
Awesome rig man! Were those 265's e rated or sl? Falken shows both options on their website.
SL. They were the lighter P rated tire with the 55k mile treadwear warranty. The LT have no treadwear warranty and are about 6 lbs heavier. The LT 265 is actually heavier than the P series 285 for what it's worth. If I were airing down often or tackling sharp rocks I'd look at the LT but I've never seen a P series puncture that an LT would have survived anyways.
@TwistedJake Very nice 4runner! I just got a 2017 4runner sr5 and will put a 2 inch front 1 inch rear leveling kit. Im pretty sure if i get 285s itll rub but in considering 275s. Did you consider that? Do you know if itll rub? Thanks a lot
It all depends on what wheel you plan to use, how much trimming you do, and how much you want to turn your wheel.
I have a 2016 trail edition. Does have a 3 inch toyo tech lift. But have the factory premium 17in rims and running 275/70-17 BFG K02's and I have tons of clearance still, no trimming needed. I feel like I could go 285's and not rub either, but everyone seems to say you'll need to trim with 285's even with the 3in lift. But I think with 2 inch lift and 275s will be perfect size for it with factory off set rims.
On stock wheels I bet you could go 285 with no trimming or at least very very little.
@@TwistedJake Definitely appears that way, just not sure I want a little extra fuel loss. I have a roof top tent and that took away 2mpg already. So I'll probably stick with the 275s for now.
@@UprootedAdventures Which load rating are your tires? 275’s are only available in LT, not SL. There are some nice SL 285’s such as the TOYO AT3 that actually weigh less than a 275 E or C if you don’t want/need the LT. Although the taller tire will affect your final drive gear ratio and therefore mileage, unsprung tire weight and rotational mass makes a big difference too...
Do they rub because of the wheel offset?
The rubbing can be attributed to any number, and/or combination of larger size, offset, too little lift, turning too sharp, etc. That's a difficult question to give a difinitive answer to.
Thanks for the video ! Are those oem trd pro grille or after market ones ?
Aftermarket and identical to OEM. I've compared side by side and I'm fairly convinced they use the same molds.
Twisted Jake did you have to do a bmc to fit the 285s ? I’m planning on doing a 2.5 front and 1.5 rear lift and wanted to put on the 285s without needing to do a bmc
@@IPinoyBoy69 No BMC. Plenty of room.
@@TwistedJake that’s awesome ! Thank you
@@TwistedJake stock 4runner sits at about 71.5 inches in height. By any chance do you know what overall height you have now with your lift and tires ?
Really great results and vid, I'm curious what lift did you install?
The front consists of OEM TRD Pro suspension with a little heavier spring and a small spacer. It measured at 2" of lift. I have another small top hat spacer to install that will add about 3/4" just to get a little more level soon.
@@TwistedJake you can improve this by getting rid of the spacer and adding a preload collar. Look up Wescott Designs in Arizona, he sells a billet preload collar that gets you the lift you want and doesn't sacrifice the performance of the shock. He makes it for the TRD Pro suspension and it goes to a lot of dealers. Trying to educate people on the negatives of a spacer versus a preload collar. I use that to get to the full 3 in on my lift without maxing out the shock travel by using a spacer. Just a tip.
@@thorsky2754 The spacer I currently have is a similar concept preload spacer. Correct me if I'm wrong but unless I'm missing something the only "benefit" to using a preload is you can't over extend the suspension presuming your shock is your limiter, which is real hard on the shock as well.
My local off road truck shop told me that 285 was out of the question with a 2inch lift
A lot of people told me the same. They were all wrong. (Also keep in mind your wheel choice is also a big factor in it.)
@@TwistedJake because of the offset that you need? I really want trd wheels
@@RowdyUpInHere You'll for sure be ok with TRD or TRD Pro wheels. Both are narrower with less off set than my mk6's. You'll have less trimming to do.
@@RowdyUpInHere The more the outer edge of your tire sticks out from the vehicle either from wheel width or offset, the more rubbing you'll have to deal with when you turn. It is the outer edge of your tread that will hit things.
Do you have aftermarket uca?
Nope. Still stock.
Can’t tell the difference between the 265’s and the 285’s. They look the same.
Then fortunately for you if you are in the position of needing to choose tires for your 5th gen you can save money and time by just getting the smaller tires.
any vibrations?
I drive about 80 miles a day. 70 of it is freeway and a majority of that is at 60-80mph with occasional cruising at 90ish. The vibration that does exist is so minimal most won't notice it. If not for my dash mounted tablet showing any shake I wouldn't notice. That being said, a slight vibration started showing up right at 72mph that went away by 76 or so. I went in for the typical rotation/balance yesterday and that vibration is now gone.
Nice! Have you noticed a change in your mpg? Going to move up to 285 Falken Wildpeaks as well
Absolutely have seen a hit but giving it a few tanks before I determine how much. I've been too busy splashing in puddles and driving hard to get an accurate assessment. I don't think it will be super horrible.
@@TwistedJake yeah not so worried about the mpg, I mean it’s a 4Runner lol. My 98 limited was a gas guzzler too. Don’t think my wife is too thrilled about the lower mpg but she loves the truck haha.
@@acefaaace I can tell you that in the first two tanks I'm doing at least 15mpg. I think once everything settles down will be in the 16-17 range calculated.
@@TwistedJake have exact same set up. Doing around 15mpg. Same rubbing issues too
285s here about the same set up but just with a daystar 2.5 spacer lifts, running about 15-17 mpg, depending on the days when i want to ride like a grandpa.
Wtf is at 15:04??!?
e load tires or p? either way 60k miles is impressive
P. When I went in for the rotation at 55k I figured I'd price tires at that time to be ready to replace. The folks at Discount Tire actually said not to bother because there was plenty enough to get through winter yet. I had mentioned the siping starting to go away but apparently the very outer edge is a shallow sipe. Plenty of tread left before the wear bars.
@@TwistedJake these tires are a p rated tire. Wow. I thought the p rated would wear faster because of the softer compound. The softer silicon for wear, wet, and winter. Great to know.
@@kimcapone4791 The P rated are the only ones with a mileage warranty.
@@TwistedJake thanks for the info. Appreciate it. I've changed my mind about getting the grabber atx. I getting the wildpeaks. Thanks
Do you have KDSS?
I do not. I know those who have it love it. I drove a couple rigs with it and purposely searched out a rig without it.
@@TwistedJake Thank you
Did u notice a big difference on gas millage? Ur truck looks awesome man
Depends on what you consider a big difference... Thanks!
@@TwistedJake5mpg
I lost less than 2mpg.
The last few tanks have been about 16mpg.
Thank you! Yeah thats nothing at all!
Off road look must better without the flaps
width is the same, only change is the tire height not a wider tire
Just get a proper lift
?
Flex it off road then get back to us.
I stopped worrying about flex when I got rid of my Jeep. I've been as of road as it needs with no issues. If you're out tackling obstacles you should probably either stick with smaller tires, do more trimming, or just start with a different platform.
