  • This is part three of my walk from Devil's Dyke to Kingston Buci in West Sussex. I am following the footsteps of Arthur Stanley Cooke from his book, Off The Beaten Track. I have arrived in Southwick from the Sussex South Downs. I am keen to look at the two churches, St Michael's in Southwick and St Julian's in Kingston. How much has changed in the last 100 years since Arthur wrote the book?

Kingston & Southwick have some really lovely old buildings & two very beautiful churches. Quite enjoyed hearing the history of the area (especially interesting about the WII bombing of the 1st church) & can't wait to see where your (& Arthur's) journey take us next in the book!!!

Fascinating film, full of interesting facts and figures. Both churches featured are very special. Inside Kingston church, of which I am a member of their friends group, is now situated the original Brighton Aquarian (Sealife Centre) organ. Sadly the church was at high risk of closure due to low attendance figures. Southwick is a beautiful village with a thriving community including a highly successful theatre and community centre, which have recently been renovated 👍

Dont fret Richard, Ive had many more failures than successes trying to replicate old views from paintings and photographs. My interest was sparked by an old watercolour of a windmill on a post card I bought in a flee market, the windmill was close to where I live and like you I thought Id try to replicate the view, I did get the photograph but the view had changed so much in the passing of years that a great watercolour made a terrible photograph a hundred years later, that was the first one, since than I have tried many times with different paintings and old photographs but few still make a good composition today. Seascapes are often best, like the coast guards cottages with the seven sisters in the background, a classic that still looks amazing.

The name Buci seems to come from France The Rue de Buci in Paris was named after Simon de Buci the first president of the Parliament de Paris in 1341.

Really well constructed and lots of lovely little facts. I just get so frustrated that we can't see inside the churches. How you manage to find some of these views in Arthur's book is beyond me. I see the Knights Templar have connections to Southwick.

Interesting video as always! Those two churches look like they were built by the same people, square towers, the pitch of the roofs and so on. Really quite massive looking. But I'm wondering, did they have bells in their towers? It looks like louvers could have been within those arches. I believe I read some where that bells were hung outside Saxon churches on wooden supports, while bells in towers came into fashion much later in England. Either way, they are beautiful examples of building with flint.

Interesting, thanks for posting. So many places to explore and so many unknown or forgotten facts to add further interest. You will never run out of subjects nor material. Presumably the bomb going deep and not exploding went into soft ground. What a great story and well told too.

It would be good of you could find out about the 'Bomb' that landed on the church and never exploded.

Sorry to be pedantic but King Charles II fled the Battle of Worcester. It was the third English civil war but it’s more commonly refereed as the Battle Of Worcester.
The English Civil war (first one) was with King Charles I and resulted in a Parliamentarian victory.

ASC does admit that he used a little licence in his picture...he showed a brighter sky, removed the gate and slightly exaggerated the curve of the road...that being said though, the photo and picture are remarkably similar...ASC's drawings are incredibly detailed aren't they?
