Cecile Ravanel, Sam Hill and Isabeau Courdurier are all using alu frames, as well as the other Commencal, Nukeproof and Sunn riders. That might be it though, at least in the top ranks - nearly everyone's running a carbon frame. Edit: Apparently Sam Hill rode Aspen on a prototype Nukeproof with a carbon front triangle, so he's not on aluminium anymore now either
Awesome segment! Love the insight on different pro setups. As for me the setup will remain aluminum wheels. Having to pay for my own stuff I cant afford to have to trash a wheelset after a dent or impact. Ill just keep running my beat up aluminum wheels for the time being
I used to have a set of carbon rims on my previous bike, one failed and the other had a few small cracks. Most of my buddies who had carbon rims had cracked them as well. When I built up my new rig I threw on a set of Industry Nine Enduro 305 aluminum wheels and I love them, just as stiff as my old carbon due to the straight pull spokes. Don't miss my carbon wheels at all.
Ganiscol Just so you know, all carbon rims can break, doesn't matter the brand... My friend just cracked his Enve M70's on Sunday. I just posted the video of it in case you want to see it.
You get quite opposing opinions everywhere, the GT guy didn't think carbon wheels were strong enough for him, while the mignon rider felt carbon was too hard for her. Loved the look of that GT frame.
I thought it was interesting how many preferred the softer feel of the aluminum wheel. (and maybe when she gets stronger she'll try CF) Also, the argument that you could probably still finish the race on AL where CF usually fails catastrophically.
I ride a carbon fibre frame but can't risk breaking carbon wheels. When I case the death out of stuff I can bend some dents out of my wheels. Carbon wheels would have to kiss goodbye.
Carbon will be stronger. I can't tell you how many times I had low pressure on my rear and bottomed out the rim on rocks. I have yet to see any damage. Iorder from Oxive Carbon one year ago now holding up very well. I would not go back to aluminum myself.
If you ride hard and rocky terrain, forget about carbon wheels. If your 6 foot and over 185 also forget carbon. Sounds like a loose loose for carbon. Wears out ur arms and hands. Too brittle, too expensive. Sounds like its over for carbon. Good thing for me. 6'2 220 i cant run carbon. First set of rovals, shattered in 15 minutes of riding. Went back to aluminium. Ride all day hanging off the back.
My friends had the same experience with their carbon wheels. He was picking shards out of his calf when his rear wheel exploded. 1st time you side swipe a rock, & they start to splinter out. Glad I had goggles on, cuz I was right behind him when it happened. What a mess.
I'm ditching my carbon rims. I get thrown around knocked off line and sore wrists and arms from them having little vertical compliance compared to alloy.
@@illduitmyself My friends & I are not pro riders... & I've seen them break their carbon wheels side swiping rocks. The vast majority of the strength in carbon wheels, is from vertical forces. When it comes to side wall impacts, & abrasion in rough terrain... carbon wheels don't do very good... & once a carbo wheel starts to splinter out, it quickly looses its vertical strength.
Carbon = reinforced , non-recyclable plastic I’m normally all about doing whatever is best for the individual riders, but carbon fiber isn’t a good industry-wide trend. It’s way to expensive to produce, it has a shorter shelf life than aluminum, and it can’t yet be sustainably recycled (it’s possible, but the process is too inefficient and expensive). It’s going to be replaced by another new age material, probably by graphene, anyway.
I commute with my mtb & don't think carbon wheels would last long because they are obstacles along the road which I damaged badly my aluminum generic wheels, etc...
I thought it was simple..... ride whatever the sponsor tells you to.
Ballbag Bill yeah but they let you choise top end alloy rim or top end carbon and you dont say anything bad about it
Ballbag Bill you can always ride a different thing and just slap your sponsor's name
Great Topic. Interesting and thoughtful responses from riders. Really good job of getting the Pro's to "open up" and talk about their bikes. 👍🏼
I'd like to see a similar video about frames

Trail Chaser MTB also, alu rims are much more affordable! Bonus!
Who pays for the rims determines their answer.

Ganiscol it's that simple? Thanks for clearing that up, you sound like the type person that knows everything. Thank you. Hahaha

Ganiscol if u saw what this guy rides down here in so cal. You would understand.
This was enlightening, seeing as how i'm weighing options on wheel builds right now
2:37 that’s a nice jersey. I’d buy that if the sold it!
Zelvy's for the win!!! I'm 125kg kitted and love the combo of Hope hubs and zelvy rims, straight and true.
I don't get why people have been asking to bring Richard Cunynghame back all season, I thought Ric has been doing a pretty awesome job
I wonder if any companies have experimented with adding Kevlar to the rims or frames heavier but you would think it would have some benefits
Life Adventure I thought this as well. Some of us are thinking outside the box
Life Adventure kevlar is fabric it doesnt have any structural integrity at all.
the problem about carbon is it's not if it fails but when, aluminum bends but won't blow up on you
WOW...& here I thought all them pros rode on carbon wheels.
You get quite opposing opinions everywhere, the GT guy didn't think carbon wheels were strong enough for him, while the mignon rider felt carbon was too hard for her. Loved the look of that GT frame.
That's because carbon wheels will flex less for a light rider, & more for a heavier rider.
I thought it was interesting how many preferred the softer feel of the aluminum wheel. (and maybe when she gets stronger she'll try CF) Also, the argument that you could probably still finish the race on AL where CF usually fails catastrophically.
hmm, feel a little bit better I got stans flows with 2.4/2.5 maxxis. thought I was missing something not getting carbon wheels..
Greg nailed it. With Alu rims you'll finish.
I ride a carbon fibre frame but can't risk breaking carbon wheels. When I case the death out of stuff I can bend some dents out of my wheels. Carbon wheels would have to kiss goodbye.
when you’re sponsored, price is out of the question (depending on your sponsor)

So... and what’s the take on this from the Trek Factory Team? Strange not to see them in this “report”.

What about carbon in rear ali in front?
DT SWISS EX 1501 all the way!
Carbon Frame + Alloy Wheels = Best of Both Worlds!
conclusion: carbon rims break very often
goroncy no. They snap, where aluminum wheels take less force to break, but they bend and you can finish a race.
goroncy, that’s what the lifetime warranty is for...you can’t get any warranty with aluminum
at the same token this is coming from pro trail smashing ppl that destroy bikes
@Ganiscol Yes

Graphene is a type of carbon fiber though.
Just has a different chemical structure than the industry's current carbon fiber.
I don’t run wheels it saves a lot of weight and hassle
Interesting. Some smaller riders prefer aluminum wheels because the carbon wheels were too stiff.
I commute with my mtb & don't think carbon wheels would last long because they are obstacles along the road which I damaged badly my aluminum generic wheels, etc...
Bring back Tracy.
Gungnir Definitely. Homeless Ric is good trackside at DHWC, but not for the EWS.
Or bring back Richard Cunynghame. And of course Tmo is awesome too!
HOW COME THE CARBON RIMS have NO SPOKE EYELETS ????????
interesting some prefer alloy
They ride what they are given
Nothing like Alaluminum !
If you need a full face helmet then you really shouldn't be on carbon anything..not too practical
they ride what they are paid to ride, simple
So apparently it all depends on the brand of the wheels, hum.
I see a lot of carbon fiber bikes, splinter apart in wrecks.
that guys 'merica graphics did not age well......
What's aluminium?😂😂
What do you expect from a nation that drinks tea WITHOUT ANY ICE IN IT?!?! ;)
CF is overrated. And you dont need CF rims until you go dedicated downhill.
This is all BS
Nobody rides aluminum. Aluminum is for noobs.
JLP Design interesting statement... because the guy in this video, riding full aluminum, just smashed La Bresse.
