  • Without his vintage surf auction to promote having turned it over to the Surf Heritage and Cultural Center, Randy Rarick with VISSLA presented the first in Honolulu "Vintage Surf Happening" in the parking lot of Hawaiian South Shore Surf Shop on Ward Avenue. As a one day event, several vendors were invited to show and sell their surf memorabilia while surfboard experts were on hand to appraise any and all kinds of vintage surfboards. And collectors of vintage surfboards were encouraged to release some of their collection stock to encourage younger aficionados to begin their own collections. Prices were very fair throughout the event.
I was fortunate to find surfboard collector and historian Greg Lui Kwan on hand to describe some of his boards for the camera and to describe some of the Hawaiian shapers that he had known in the last fifty plus years. His passion for surfboards is evident in his knowledge and descriptions on camera.
I also want to thank Tiki Taboo the surf band for their on camera music and to thank Ev Fox for the use of his song END OF THE RIDE on the back end of the video.

Mahalo for your fine video work Kyle. Thanks to RR, I helped with production, did vintage surfboard appraisals & had around 6 or 7 boards there on display for sale. Some of my favorite times in my life were working for/with Randy Rarick. I learned much just being around him. Thanks again for sharing your videos. It’s ‘10 years after’ & I’m just seeing this for the first time! A L O H A 🌅🌊🤙🏽 G O D B L E S S

That band sounds better than most of the original phony surf bands. Rarick has done a lot for the sport of surfing. Not only was he a champion surfer, but a shaper, a contest director, and now, producer of surfboard auctions. I really enjoyed his articles in the magazines about his trips to Africa. I thought his mid-length model was my kind of board. Yes, Rarick is an important figure in surfing history. But I wonder? Who caught the most waves at Sunset Beach? Was it Owl? Was it Rarick? Was it Bobby Owens? Was it Bradshaw? Michael Ho? Yes, it must be Michael Ho.

Yeah that doesn't make sense to me either, especially on a classic board like that.
