Velzy is as cool as it gets. I'm so stoked to have a couple of my Dad's Velzys.

Every stroke he took with his saw, adze, and planes was exactly right. The way he knew the feel and story each tool intimately is the sign of a master craftsman.

I moved into Newport Beach about 1962 and met Dale at his shop "Dales Surfboards" one day. He was a fun guy with a sense of humor, a hot rod and a motorcycle. I admired his lifestyle. He made a board for me, which was the second Velzy I owned. The first one was sold at Sears and Roebuck and was 10' but the custom was 9'. He invented the 7'11" and named it the "7-11." It was very unusual, but was lighter, faster and shorter than any other maker at that time. I never understood why he didn't get credit for the first 'short board' but it wasn't very popular. Just odd.

Mike Velzy, Dale's nephew, inspired me to take up surfing back in 1964 at Santa Monica Pier. I was 13 and continue to this day in my 70th year. Now I live in New Zealand.

My first two surfboards were balsa boards made by Velzy & Jacobs.
