These upgrades will not be enough to even complete with what others had at pre season testing. We will see McLaren as a back marker this season, only saved by their drivers. Sure they got talent but talent only gets a boat so far.
Just realized that Piastri, much like his manager Mark Webber almost two decades ago, scored his first F1 points in his home race..and a very chaotic one at that. Kinda cool thing to see happen.
What the last years really have shown me is, that at such a high level it can't be overstated how important it is that driver and car go well together. I mean ok, I feel like Alonso can be quick in any car but almost many other really good drivers have shown weakness when the car didn't suit them. Seb didn't like the Ferrari, Ricciardo didn't like the Mclaren, Hamilton is struggling with the Merc these days, Gasly didn't do well in the Red Bull while doing really well at Alfa Tauri, ...
It's a great shame for me that we didn't get to see Fernando and Lando as teammates for One season at the very least. I know the car wasn't amazing but it would have been a nice indicator of the Old vs New debate.
They were teammates when racing the 24h of Daytona in 2018, racing for Zak Brown's LMP2 team. That was the only time we got to see Fernando and Lando together (excluding a few F1 practice sessions in 2018). A Lando v Nando driver pairing would've been phenomenal. Hopefully we get to see it in some form or the other again though.

Yea but in the last season with the old cars he was also lost. And Sainz was pretty fast in that type of a mclaren. So its pretty much slower that Nor, Sainz and Piastri

A year down the line & they've been proven right. Piastri is my current favourite driver on the grid. He doesn't whine like most of the others, puts his head down & goes about his business.
Ricciardo is an exceptional driver. He beat Vettel and raced well against Verstappen. The McLaren just seemed antithetical to his driving style. It's far too early to draw comparisons between Ricciardo and Piastri. We can draw a comparison in several years' time.
The comparison here isn't about who's the better driver, as Ric has a lot more under hs belt, it's about who's performing better at McLaren, specifically. I think you missed the entire point of the video mate.
@@bhargavshatrughna489 You misunderstood the video. They compared basic skills of the driver such as the ability to process information whilst in the car.
I think both viewpoints have merit, however if I'm Daniel Ricciardo, I want a new race drive ASAP. Next year, preferably. Therefore potential employers will be making the Piastri comparison _this_ year 📊. Of course, the ideal driver lineup would have been Alonso + Piastri without Ocon, most likely... Yet Alpine signed Ocon to a very long contract for some reason...
Daniel is loved by every F1 fan but his adaptability was clearly a weak point. I found it dumbfounding that he didn't take a lesser seat for '23 to prove he's still got it (i.e. Albon). I get that he needed a mental reset but to go out like what he did and expect a top team to take him onboard is wishful thinking. I think the odds of him coming back to a proper drive have become less and less likely :(
Well lets be honest, Albon stept back but will never get into a topteam anymore due to it. Ricciardo knows this as well and might have the attitude "if i can't get in a top team i rather retire"
While I agree that piastri has had a great start, we have yet to see much from either driver this season what with the terrible start McLaren have had as a team. I think people de rate Norris quite heavily and I don't understand why despite him resoundingly beating the talent that is DR two seasons running.
@@Cafferssss I wonder the same thing. He is good, but he hasn't won a race yet, he lost to George in F2 pretty decisively. He's not a bad driver by any means but I don't think he's a generational talent.
@Lps ct3 I don’t see any top tier driver (Norris, Rus, Lec) joining RB while Max is there unless they’re an up and comer. Don’t get me wrong, I’m hoping Mclaren will be WCC contenders in the next few years but they seem to be all bark and no bite judging from the last few years.
as much as i have respect for your (previous) analysis, it's way too early in this season to start comparing... 3 race into the season is not enough of a sample size to be valid, as the counter is always, DR3 is after-all a MULTIPLE race winner, while LN4 & OP81 still have ZERO race wins to show for. Until the stats, for race win, is somewhat close... any comparison to DR3 is, IMHO invalid. it's must always be Objective, and never Subjective.
Find it interesting that it’s coming from the own team. A measure of his ability is always much more marked by another teams observations. Each team has their own biased ways to measure driver performance. For another team to not have access to data that is specific to Piastei’s drive and to still make a judgment of him being a star is either blatant mistake or evidence of a good driver that transcends the small derivative measures of technology.
I love that Piastri is doing well, what I don't enjoy is the underlining tone that Ricciardo was "their issue" being he was the only driver with a race win after a many year drought. At the end of the day, the car didn't suit his driving style, and that made is difficult for everyone. We can praise Piastri not at Riccardo's expense. Especially since he is performing far better than other rookies.
@@TheDiasporaMedia actually not that big of a Riccardo fan. But go on… What I’m emphasizing is Piastri alone is fantastic, and although Riccardo wasn’t a good fit, he did bring them their first race win in many years. So having an underlying message in their comments that Riccardo was the problem is funny. Its like a pot calling the kettle black.
The drama gets more attention than the reality. The reality is DR wasn't a good fit for the car and sometimes that happens. It could be in conjunction with him not being as quick of a driver, it could not be. There's a mllion reasons things can go wrong, or right, for a driver in F1. Trying to place the blame or the praise solely on one aspect isn't considering the full picture. Same thing with Piastri. He got a P8 in Australia, but if it wasn't such a shit show of a race he might not have. Takes more time to consider all the various factors than to place blame or praise on one reason, and people are usually too lazy to do that.
He's done literally nothing of note yet this season. He lucked into a top 10 in Auz cause of all the chaos on the standing start after the pointless red flag. Without that he'd be looking at DNF, 15th and 11-13th, not exactly a standout performance. Especially when he very publicly chose to go with one of the few teams headed down grid, rather than Alpine which is inching slowly towards the front.
He has a stellar junior pedigree and hasn’t made any serious mistakes yet. He’s speed hasn’t been proven. In testing and practices where I get that timing isn’t everything, but he is consistently second best to Norris, and in races, he was faster in Saudi… maybe, but if Norris didn’t make that mistake he would have been out in Q1 again. Norris did make the mistake, so credit where credit is due. I would say we need more races to make a final judgement, but right now between the two junior racing prodigies (the Hull and LCH), he is more Nico than Lewis.
@@davidvasquez08 it’s still early in the season but I’m still yet to see anything that’s made his pace look that impressive. My guess is that he also, will have trouble adapting to how awkward the mclaren is to drive and setup.
@@AttilatheThrilla true but team orders preventing Lando from even challenging Ric and thanks to Sir Hamilton and Verstappen doing F1 car mating rituals played a crucial role in the victory
Previously, Riccardo drove Renault engines, and I wonder if different behaviours between the Renault and Mercedes responses tripped up Ricardo, especially with his late breaking techniques. I also wonder if the fact that Riccardo is noticeably taller than most other drivers and while Red Bull had experience with that with Mark Webber also being tall, and Renault seemed fine, but it might be possible that McLaren just never got it right for him, affecting his feel for and thus control of the car.
I think more likely it was front end behavior. Remember his “last of the late brakers” motto? He has a very distinctive driving style when it comes to cornering, which made him very fast and capable of incredible overtakes - but it also depended on the car behaving a certain way under load. I figure the Maclarens he drove just didn’t behave the same as the Red Bulls and Renaults he’d been in before, and he couldn’t find a way to drive them comfortably. Which suggests to me that he might do really well and look like the Danny Ric of old if/when he drives the current Red Bull. Obviously, that car is tuned to Max Verstappen’s distinctive driving style, but Max and Danny seem to want similar things from a car. I suspect Lewis Hamilton is having similar problems adapting to the current Mercedes, although obviously not to the same degree (he’s still getting 98% of what that admittedly bad car can deliver). His complaints are much deeper than just porpoising. The overly forward seating position and stiff-but-loose rear end are driving him nuts. George Russell is obviously more comfortable with the car’s quirks, and that could be simply a matter of style suits the driver, too.
Ricciardo isnt tall though haha Not even for an F1 driver. Hes 179 according to himself..so pretty much at the same height as most other F1 drivers (176-179). Even Leclerc says hes 180...which isnt true lol and was ridiculed by the other drivers but you get what In saying. Mark Webber was 184 which IS tall for F1.
I mean Norris drove Renault before and started with the Mercedes the same year than Ricciardo. So with 9 year more experience he should have done better. Or maybe he isn't just that good. Also, he isn't that tall and I don't think that makes a difference. McLaren tried a lot to help him, it just didn't work. I don't think it was that he suddenly couldn't drive anymore. It was most likley a confidence problem. He came in this team thinking he'd have Norris easily in his back, like most people did. Must have been quite a shock for him. Then the pressure gets higher and he couldn't handle it.
Now, I agree that Piastri should be on the gird, an excellent driver. But am really annoyed with this constant attack on Dan. Dan had to adjust to a new car going from Reno to McLaren in 2021, then adjust again to another new car in 2022. Lando already had a lot more time in the car so was able to make the smaller adjustments required. And the fact that McLaren had decided in Nov 2021 to get Piastri and dump Dan. McLaren did nothing to help Dan in 2022 and actually wrecked a few of his races with poor pit calls and tire choices. McLaren only improved Lando's car in 2022 so it gave them a good reason to dump Dan. Remember, after just 2 races in 2022, Zach was already bagging Dan. That is because the deal with Piastri had been done.
This is utterly ridiculous, Mclaren is blowing its own horns. They think we don't see that they are doing even worse than last year. It is not like Piastri is driving at Norris level of last year, he is driving at Danny Ric's level if not less and Norris fell down to it too. Both Norris and Piastri deserve better. The car is more of a tractor than last year. Everyone is talking about drivers while the team's troubles are in management with Zak who is unfit to manage an f1 team, slaping stickers on the car is not enough, and in a subpar engineering. Aston Martin's performance showed that and mercedes struggles show it too. They need to stop throwing shades at Danny Ric and go to work, he is gone, and they are still blaming him! 😁
Wasnt the car only starting to come "alive" towards the end of last season? Lando was doing the heavy lifting fighting to control the car last year all while out performing Daniel. Irony is the matrix system is making a comeback somewhat at Mclaren. Would rather let Piastri race for the entire year before commenting altogether in its proper context.
The big point is Ricciardo was employed as the senior driver to give feedback on the car in regards to Redbull and Renault, they then ignored his feedback because Lando was adjusting his driving style to make the best of a crap car as against Daniel saying it needs to be able to do x, I'm not changing my style to make a piece of junk look good.
Why do ppl do this when even Ricciardo blames himself for his performances & not the team. The guy that ppl fanboy admitted himself hes fucking up & i still see these paragraphs 😭
That’s what great drivers do, they squeeze the absolute most out of the car they are given. Sure, some cars are bad and need improvement based on driver feedback, but it’s still up to the driver to do what they can. Imagine if Russell had simply said “this car is trash” and not pushed the most he could out of the Williams. He would probably never have made it to Mercedes.
@@javierplays9516 both arguments do have merit. It is possible and somewhat likely that development of the car favored lando, as he was (and still is) the number one driver. It’s also true that riccardo didn’t adapt well to the mclaren and fell behind his teammate. As far as him taking the fall for lacking performance, I think that it has to do with securing a drive in the future. Teams would more likely sign a good driver who had a couple bad seasons versus one that’s gonna turn around and shit talk the team’s performance.
This is totally nonsense. Yes, Daniel should have definitely given feedbacks to improve the car. However, he also needs to extract the most from the car, and he failed to do it!
"What Oscar Piastri is doing at McLaren that Daniel Ricciardo couldn't" Umm...nothing yet... Not sure this is content, or just trying to draw an argument. Monty Python were more successful at making a room for an argument.
The Danny ricc debate is getting tiresome, there's nothing new here. Clearly redbull know more than we do or they wouldn't have obtained his services. Norris isnt someone that one should be compared to he hasn't won a race, no doubt he's a great driver but the results are yet to be seen. I don't see the drivers at fault here clearly McLaren aren't providing anyone with a winning race car. Shouldn't the focus be on car and the lack of engineering to be competitive. Are we really comparing 2022 spec car to 2023 car ? Maybe in 15 yrs we can keep drawing parallels it will be just as relative as this. I guess Danny took the spot light off Hamilton and his lack of ability to come to terms with the new spec Mercedes. Certainly a former shadow of what the team has achieved driver or manufacturer ?
I believe even if Lewis or Alonso joined Mclaren now, they would have given feedback that is not inline with Lando as well. Obviously Mclaren goes with Landos' because Lando driving style is more suited to the Mclaren car design. No right or wrong. Put Lewis in a Redbull, Max would have been faster. Put Max in a Mercedes, Lewis would have been faster.
I love Piastri but it’s a bit laughable that after 3 races you’re already saying that he’s better than ricciardo in the mclaren. I think he will be better in the car over the long run but at least give him half a season. You keep saying he’s doing things Ricciardo couldn’t, but early in 2021 Ricciardo was out qualifying Norris and won a race later that year. I hate the Ricciardo slander because F1 is a team sport and as disappointing as Ricciardo’s stint, specifically 2022 was for him, Mclaren was just as disappointing with bad car design, inability to build a car around its drivers and poor strategy calls.
Lets be very clear...McClaren made zero car adjustments for D Ric...he was left to struggle with a package built for Norris. RBull have publicly stated they are trying to undo all the bad habits he has atuned into his driver style to drive what was a brick on wheels. Oscar will reach the cars limits mid season and progress no further ....it is substantially a car issue...That is valid as Norris only progresses to the inflectionn point and also gets hamstrung....he has said as much publicly
What McLaren is missing as a decent car and that wasn't solved by dumping Ricciardo and getting Piastri... Paint it anyway you want McLaren's woes are not driver based and their brand is on the nose no matter how many stickers you throw on the car.
What do you mean that McLaren is "down force light"? From the data I saw from Australia, McLaren was fastest of anybody in the slow corners, second only to Red Bull in fast corners, and slowest of everybody on the straights. If anything that seems to me to be "down force heavy". Seems they have waaaaay too much drag
Piastri is undoubtedly a good driver, not yet a proven winner like Daniel is. I feel he made a colossal mistake signing with McLaren, if he wants any chance of success. I still remember the McLaren (Senna, Prost) of old, sadly in reality, McLaren are only also-ran backmarkers now. If he doesn't make a mess out it, by trying to be hero with a zero car, he could score a ride with a winng team when his contract expires.
mclaren secured seven second place finishes with a total of nine podiums in 2023 . Daniel Ricciardo just got comprehensively out driven by Yuki Tsunoda in Australia. funny how comments age
this is funny because denial ricciardo was described as having very little technical knowledge on how f1 cars actually drove fast whilst oscar piastri and lando norris are doing impressive things in a slow mclaren
And….missing the mark entirely…is how BADLY Norris is performing this year in this version of the McLaren ‘team’. The gap between drivers is, “Norris is closer to Piastri”…not the other way around
McLaren have had a nightmare start, incredibly lucky to score points at the last race. Yes I know James Key got the bullet and the company has restructured but… If I was a shareholder I would be asking some serious questions as to why the team is going backwards again, or why McLaren’s development seems to be so far behind the front runners???
he is doing a good job driving that tracktor, although asutralia isn't the circuit that give a accurate performance showcase but i hope he continues the good driving
The problem is that, in liking the fact that Norris, and now Piastry, can deal with a VERY BAD car might cause the team to keep the car bad, because they can handle it, instead of making an actual good car, were the pilots would get much better results.
Still pretty obvious though, that the biggest impediment to Mclaren's success, is McLaren themselves. Just think where they'd be with these very adaptable drivers if they actually built a good car. Getting rid of Key should be just that.
Instead of trashing Ricciardo for his performance why don’t you cover how he had zero input on last years car in testing, so the car was developed 100% around Norris. When you take that into account then this idea is pointless and heavily biased.
Really, 3 races in, no stunning results and he's a future world champ, not until he gets good gear underneath him (and even then it's doubtful), which they failed to do for Danny and many others. I know they are different beasts but the Indy cars are ground effect yet they appear to have been unable to take any of the tech/data over to the F1 team.
I dare you to clarify on why it was controversial *for McLaren* to sign Piastri. The only controversial actor in that whole saga was Alpine with their illegitimate attempt to hook PIA into a contract.
This is why I find it funny people are saying Daniel is putting pressure on Checo for RBR...no he's not, Daniel proved he can't adapt and is unlikely to ever drive for a top team again. Hate to say it, but Daniel is no longer at his peak and he will be relegated to driving for shit teams.
He’s made zero rookie mistakes because he started out as a reserve driver, instead of being thrown into an F1 car without any prep. It’s also early days, his best result is a direct result of the chaos at Melbourne and not really due to skill.
The title of this video is idiotic. So far, Piastri has yet to outperform Ricciardo's results from last year. Is he doing well for a rookie.l, yes. Better than Danny Ric., no. At last year's Australian GP, Danny qualified 7th and finished the race in 6th. This year Piastri did not make it out of Q1, and benefitted from the freak red flags to finish 9th. How, by any measure can you say he's been outperforming Danny so far.
Well in the words of Horner, Piastri is learning bad driving habits to cope with a very flawed and poorly designed car. Ricciardo was the canary in the coalmine and the Mclarens scapegoat to cover up poor management and design choices.
I've enjoyed the interesting and straightforward delivery of your content. Just throwing it out there... if your channel also covered wec I'd be watching every time :)
McLaren have no excuses anymore, they have two world class drivers and can't blame a driver who struggled to adapt to their woeful car. Even the wind tunnel excuse ios wearing thin.
Let's wait and see till the end of this year to confirm this. This channel will say anything in their videos to get views. 3rd race with one point scoring finish and already he's better than DR? BS
Piastri: I have to change my driving style to fit the mclaren Horner: from the sims we’ve noticed Danny has picked up some bad habits from his time at Mclaren. 😂 Mclaren is just bad right now. I doubt established drivers from any other team could go to that car and make it work. They need fresh rookies
I know we're on an extended break, but just don't put crap out looking for a bite. You should be better than this after three races that have given us next to nothing with the McLarens aside from 'lucky points' in a race filled with DNF's, red flags and penalties.
I figured Ricciardo’s fans would be up in arms against this in the comments but it’s good to see people start to understand that McLaren made the right call, was best for both sides.
Lando was coasting with Ricciardo as a teammate. Danny was not pushing Norris to be better, and the car is terrible, so Lando wasn't really expected to do much better. Plastri is hungry, he is going to energize the team. Hopefully, they will put him in a car that's legit capable of podiums, and not needing to rely on faster cars to DNF.
Piastri recognising his mistakes and “should of done this” is great. But what separates the best from the rest, is that the best don’t say should of after the race. They do it.
Are you really going to use this? Verstappen is the cream of the crop currently. Look at his 1st 2 seasons. It takes time to adjust. Verstappen, Hamilton, Schumacher, Senna, Prost etc every single driver in the history of F1 didn't "DO IT" from race 1. 3 race weekends and you're expecting flawless performances. LOL
I think most of the failure lies at the feet of whoever it was at McLaren who thought that micromanaging Daniel Ricciardo was a good idea. When you hire a successful specialist, you set them up for success by listening to them, working with them, and let them do their thing. Norris has only ever driven McLarens in F1 and still hasn't won an F1 race, and Ricciardo arrived a GP winner with a good idea of what a winning car looked like (and what types of issues should be avoided). Considering Ricciardo brought them their first GP win in more than a decade, and they have been notorious for building cars that drivers find difficult, they should have listened to him.

This .
Given that he was generally slower than Sainz in 2019, I think Alonso could've comprehensively beaten Lando that year.
@@Mani6TheMan9 At Daytona the opposite was the case . Lando took the car from 10th to 1st in his stint. The American reports were all about how fast Lando was and he was only 18.
@@Mani6TheMan9 I like Alonso, but I honestly think Sainz would be faster in equal machinery.
@@redline589 Not sure what would make you think that. Sainz was slower than Max at TR, slower than Hulkenberg at Renault, barely faster than a rookie Norris, and slower than Leclerc.
As much as I’m I’m a big fan of Danny Ricc, Piastri certainly looks like the real deal. DR has appeared lost in the era of the new regulations.
i just think the mclaren cars during dr era was just terrible and somehow lando is pulling the car out of garbage tier with some unspeakable magic making it look better than it ever was.
@@AntisnakeYT Except Piastri has already showed us that the car is drivable, DR is the one at fault, not Norris doing some magic
Yea but in the last season with the old cars he was also lost. And Sainz was pretty fast in that type of a mclaren. So its pretty much slower that Nor, Sainz and Piastri
Lost...Just like Norris!
@Lps ct3 5 years and no wins! It's lost.
He's made 0 rookie mistakes so far, while keeping up a good pace with Lando. 3rd race and he's already doing a solid job as a 2nd driver, impressive. Can't wait to see his pace with a better car and his development in a few years.
Lando is already on notice
I'm happy to see the kid do well so far this season, but lets wait till the end of the season to compare him to his team mate and others.
But how will they generate endless content otherwise?
@@Atlas.Brooklyn lol good question

A year down the line & they've been proven right. Piastri is my current favourite driver on the grid. He doesn't whine like most of the others, puts his head down & goes about his business.
Please make a video on Alfa and Bottas' struggles, hurts to see them like that :'l
They still have 2 weeks of videos to put out so yeah, I can see that one coming eventually.
Imagine massa went to Mercedes instead of Valteri..
Impossible, Mercedes wanted a No.2 driver, they would never had co sidered Alonso, Verstappen or Vettel, Bottas was THE perfect #2 driver
@Lps ct3 I know I would
Ricciardo is an exceptional driver.
And the more Piastri lights it up in the seat I've just vacated, the less promising I'm going to look, especially with other factors being less favourable to me: age, ceiling, adaptability..
Then you’d have to say Vettel had a car that went against his driving style, since the hybrid era.
@@jimbomac555correct, just as the car in the blown diffuser era didn't suit Webber. This is the circle of life that is F1. One day Norris and Piastri will both be undone by young upstarts and so it continues.
Why are people surprised? He has a junior career that rivals Leclerc and Russell, who are a tier above Norris
For such a highly rated rookie, Alpine preferred to field Ocon and Alonso instead and place Piastri on sabbatical and then at Williams, which was most curious!
@@TassieLorenzo their loss 😂
@@TassieLorenzo That's why when fans sneer at Piastri going to McLaren in the first place (and there are plenty of them sadly), they completely forget Alpine didn't even want him in the main team and didn't have a contract for him, even as Otmar kept saying they had. Loyalty my arse.
@@TassieLorenzo I think it's more curious that you think that wasn't a serious blunder on Alpine's part. At least Alonso was finally the big winner out of that ordeal.
@@RockSolitude I think it was a huge blunder and Alpine were foolish to not select Piastri as their driver in a timely manner! Or release Piastri as a free agent (to probably go to McLaren) and select Alonso as their driver in a timely manner for that matter. Either decisive decision would have done the trick! Of course, the ideal driver lineup would have been Alonso + Piastri without Ocon, most likely... Yet Alpine signed Ocon to a very long contract for some reason...
Nonsense. He’s not presenting any better a result that Danny. And he’s killed the McLaren social media with his 0 for personality.
Did Mclaren sponsor this video?
Decent start. More data needed.
This is a brilliant Breakdown. It makes me think Norris has a difficult time ahead.
Norris is in no trouble at all. He’ll be the number one driver at Audi while Mclaren are still battling for midfield.
Oscar will probably do to Lando, what Max did to Dani, but we're a ways off from that for now s o I think he's just fine tbh.
Its 3 races in and he hasn't done anything particularily remarkable. This seems like a premature conversation to say the least.
as much as i have respect for your (previous) analysis, it's way too early in this season to start comparing...
There’s a calm arrogance about piastri I like, he will definitely be one for the future
Especially since he is performing far better than other rookies.
hahaha DR delusional fan boy incoming in … 3…..2…..1 ☝🏾 🚀
@@TheDiasporaMedia actually not that big of a Riccardo fan. But go on…
What I’m emphasizing is Piastri alone is fantastic, and although Riccardo wasn’t a good fit, he did bring them their first race win in many years.
@@TheDiasporaMedia what a low iq comment lol
Piastri has been unbelievable. I wasn't expecting him to be THIS good THIS fast.
Great work boys! thanks for the video!
Oh shut up half the grid dnf’d he’s done nothing
Piastri’s first point scoring was as “impressive” as what Mick did in Silverstone.

Kinda glad Ricciardo walked away. He would probably be the slowest driver on the grid this year with this Mclaren. Would be difficult to watch.
He is looking more and more like the ice man.
"What Oscar Piastri is doing at McLaren that Daniel Ricciardo couldn't"
Umm...nothing yet...
What's the difference? Kid wants to be the best... that's all.
He's focused on driving not smiling.
He’s known for consistency, just constantly smooth
What McLaren is missing as a decent car and that wasn't solved by dumping Ricciardo and getting Piastri... Paint it anyway you want McLaren's woes are not driver based and their brand is on the nose no matter how many stickers you throw on the car.
its all speculation. there's no saying that Daniel wouldn't have been closer to lando with this car.
huh, Daniel outqualified Lando in his first 3/4 races, why are you comparing the season where he missed preseason along with a bunch of other issues?
Daniel Ricciardo just got comprehensively out driven by Yuki Tsunoda in Australia. funny how comments age
how did everyone forget riccardo outqualified norris in 1st race but showly fell off
this is funny because denial ricciardo was described as having very little technical knowledge on how f1 cars actually drove fast whilst oscar piastri and lando norris are doing impressive things in a slow mclaren
He's a super exciting prospect to watch. I'm backing him 100%.
Think it’s been better for everyone that Ricciardo isn’t still in that car this year
And….missing the mark entirely…is how BADLY Norris is performing this year in this version of the McLaren ‘team’.
The gap between drivers is, “Norris is closer to Piastri”…not the other way around
McLaren have had a nightmare start, incredibly lucky to score points at the last race.
Yes I know James Key got the bullet and the company has restructured but…
If I was a shareholder I would be asking some serious questions as to why the team is going backwards again, or why McLaren’s development seems to be so far behind the front runners???
he is doing a good job driving that tracktor, although asutralia isn't the circuit that give a accurate performance showcase but i hope he continues the good driving
Mclaren should start solving other things. Drivers aren’t/were not their problem to begin with.
“A slightly difficult” car lol, that’s kind of an understatement
Piastri's first points in F1 were earned in Australia! He also earned it with some excellent luck from other teams destroying themselves lol.
A big gamble? Hiring one of the hottest prospects in F1 to replace someone who failed to deliver 2 seasons in a row?
The problem is that, in liking the fact that Norris, and now Piastry, can deal with a VERY BAD car might cause the team to keep the car bad, because they can handle it, instead of making an actual good car, were the pilots would get much better results.
Lmao what the hell are you on about? Do you mean a difficult to drive car? Cause no team wants to keep making bad cars lmao
When you take that into account then this idea is pointless and heavily biased.
watching this video 6 mos later and it HAS aged well. really impressive stuff from piastri
I remember Ricciardo regularly outbreaking Verstappen in his Red Bull days.
Yeah, half a decade ago was such a good time, wasn't it?
Piastri and Norris, two great talents. McLaren is on the right track back to greatness.
Like George Russell, he doesn’t know what a good F1 car feels like, thus he’s not had to learn how to go back and learn how to nurse a crap car.
Piastri is overhyped, he’s got three races in. Calm yourself down before making ridiculously silly claims
ARAAAAMCO, what happened to the Aramco sponsorship deal?
Really, 3 races in, no stunning results and he's a future world champ, not until he gets good gear underneath him (and even then it's doubtful), which they failed to do for Danny and many others. I know they are different beasts but the Indy cars are ground effect yet they appear to have been unable to take any of the tech/data over to the F1 team.
I wouldnt say Piastri is clear of curse yet. Dani ric was even with lando ever so often
Yeah, at the start of last year they were pretty close
I dare you to clarify on why it was controversial *for McLaren* to sign Piastri. The only controversial actor in that whole saga was Alpine with their illegitimate attempt to hook PIA into a contract.
This is why I find it funny people are saying Daniel is putting pressure on Checo for RBR...no he's not, Daniel proved he can't adapt and is unlikely to ever drive for a top team again. Hate to say it, but Daniel is no longer at his peak and he will be relegated to driving for shit teams.
Alpine is so lucky to have such an amazing talent in their team
He’s made zero rookie mistakes because he started out as a reserve driver, instead of being thrown into an F1 car without any prep. It’s also early days, his best result is a direct result of the chaos at Melbourne and not really due to skill.
I can see Piastri making Norris look damn expensive
The title of this video is idiotic. So far, Piastri has yet to outperform Ricciardo's results from last year. Is he doing well for a rookie.l, yes. Better than Danny Ric., no. At last year's Australian GP, Danny qualified 7th and finished the race in 6th. This year Piastri did not make it out of Q1, and benefitted from the freak red flags to finish 9th. How, by any measure can you say he's been outperforming Danny so far.
He got lucky with the points in Australia 🤔 this is the worse McLaren car Norris has driven 😐 so idk about all this
Well in the words of Horner, Piastri is learning bad driving habits to cope with a very flawed and poorly designed car.
Ricciardo was the canary in the coalmine and the Mclarens scapegoat to cover up poor management and design choices.
Nice to hear positive reviews. Too often is the negatives that we focus on
Like how RUclips subtitles think Piastri is PS3
Still too early to undermine Ricciardo with such comparison. Granted, he is the best rookie among his peers.

I know we're on an extended break, but just don't put crap out looking for a bite. You should be better than this after three races that have given us next to nothing with the McLarens aside from 'lucky points' in a race filled with DNF's, red flags and penalties.
Mad Ricciardo fan spotted
I figured Ricciardo’s fans would be up in arms against this in the comments but it’s good to see people start to understand that McLaren made the right call, was best for both sides.
I bet alpine are relieved.
How can you compare Ricciardo and Piastri when it isn't the same car?
