Even Adrea Stella said his tyre management has improved greatly over a season. His tyre management has improved alot but more to improve which is normal, Stella TP confirms this. Bahrain a high deg/abrasive track he did fine, lapped only half a tenth slower in race, then Australia another tyre management race although 12s behind would've been only less than 6s if he didn't make that single mistake off track. Suzuka given he was 6 tenths slower there last year in the race, you can't expect him to suddenly be on pace 11 races later at that track in similar conditions. He certainly was much faster this race in comparison(even stella confirms this), more like over 2 tenths slower which is alot better in comparison to 11 races at that track. The gap(18s) at the end was exaggerated by being stuck behind Alonso for most of the race(need a significant delta to pass around suzuka if on same age tyres) and the dirty air exacerbating tyre deg(yeah his fault due to underperformance in quali). btw Leclerc had some struggles in tyre deg in his 2nd year, who remembers the 2019 Hungarian gp, he struggled quite abit compared to his experienced teammate in Vettel.
Would like to see more races like Qatar where the drivers aren’t limited by tire deg, or maybe a change in tire compound to allow less then straight driving lol
Success in F1 doesn't come overnight. Give him some time, imo he is showing why someone put him in the car to start with. Wait, I think we will all enjoy seeing his success in the future.
Imagine an F1 where drivers were allowed and able to push the car to its absolute limit lap after lap without worrying about tyre (tire) management or fuel saving. Being able to see the true potential of the modern cars on a Sunday (and not just on a Saturday during qualifying) .. Modern F1 is slowly dying.
I think we need to relax especially after he had such a great rookie season and still pushes Lando. Sometimes teams outpace other teams development in Formula One. It’s a part of the process. Side note Jim Clark was the greatest driver of all time, in every class.
Driving “straight” doesn’t mean “smooth”, it means taking more of a V shape approach to corners, where you spend more time going in a straight line and getting the car rotated more aggressively in a shorter time. Max and Charles drive this way too
It's not necessarily a v shape...but yeah straighting out, or leveling out the car with a quick rotation so you can get on the throttle without having to fight the car to the exit. That's why (to me at least ) it's kinda weird that Oscar would have more deg actually. Cause when executed correctly it should cause less strain on the tire.. maybe the deg happens on entry and rotation...cause on exit it should deg less
Vettel is the V shape king. Piastri, Charles and Max simply reduce the corner length by turn in early and still somehow find mid-corner rotation through unbelievable skill. For evidence, check out Peter Windsor’s photos from the penultimate corner at Monaco 2023.
Dam shame Oscar was sidelined for a year especially when Bearman and Antonelli look like getting a drive straight outta F1. Though like Lewis, he did get straight into a Maclaren
Don't think this should be a problem, F1 should promote aggressive driving, all this "have to manage the tires" for the whole race is the thing that is killing racing in f1
I remember tyre degradation being an issue in 2023. Hope he can get that resolved later this season. He has a lot of potential, just think it’ll take time
oh hey, there's now graphics in top left like "difficult characteristics". question: Is there anything you learnt for editing videos that was difficult/painstaking at first but you were proud of the result? like choosing audio/creating anything in particular of graphics.
Honestly I’m proud of everything I’ve done for it. It’s a hard learning curb but if you sit down and watch videos as well as dedicating time you can get it down quicker then expected
how do you get those charts with the lap times? I pay for the annual F1 subscription and i get to see the lap times live during the session but i can't see them once the session is over and i don't have what you are showing.
At least the hype is now over and reality and more considered comments are being made. Oscar is a great driver and is still improving. He is no rookie now especially with seasons of 22 races last year. Lando is one of the toughest team mates for any driver. Its not just how fast Lando is but his tyre managemnet and consistency of driving. He rarely makes mistakes. Lets see how Oscar develops but the worrying fact that has been picked up is that he has started 2024 like 2023 and has not prgressed as much as people hoped. I am sure he will beat Lando on occasion as that is the nature of F1 but not consistenlty and Lando has consolidated his position.
@@nicolekovala I said he had improved or didnt you read my comment. However this year Oscar has only outqualified Lando once so far and even if he has improved his tyre managemnet it hasnt put Lando under any pressure.who still well ahead in the races.

@@bjs7442maybe you forgot that tyre management doesn’t take 1 year to learn especially when in junior categories (he rolled through btw) tyre management is not needed. lando said that he just got on top of his tyre management last year. leclerc struggled his first years with tyre management as well. it takes time and experience and you don’t learn it over the winter break ffs. lando had a great race, oscar would’ve been in a higher position had he not had significant damage. also having significant damage and still finishing in the points is not bad but okay mate
He is still far behind lando. He did a good rookie season but it was not amazing like some people seemed to think. He is a talent but he has to step up this year. Max’s rookie season was better, Lewis’ one was much better and I would argue that Leclerc’s rookie season was also better.
the mclaren was a back marker for the first half of the season so the comparisons don't make sense. as soon as the car was competitive he was at the front
@@nuztuz903 The car was also a backmarker for Lando. Anyway Piastri is doing great now for a second year. He still clearly lacks race pace compared to Norris but he seems to be championship material
Probably why Leclerc is also currently in Sainz’s back pocket. Nobody has ever watched Charles race and said, ‘there’s a driver who knows how to look after his tires’.
Charles actually has had better race pace than Sainz overrall throughout their entire time together at Ferrari. This year, his biggest issue has been his qualifying, which I'm sure he'll sort out soon enough.
@@iiFuturejust because a driver isn’t known for something doesn’t mean they can’t do it. Key word, wasn’t known. Perez has the nickname “tire whisperer” Charles doesn’t. This isn’t even saying Leclerc is a bad driver.
Qatar 2023 was made a 3 stop mandatory (technically it was a max of 17 laps per tire) because of the kerbs - Pirelli does analysis of the tires during the race weekend and noticed that sidewalks were developing cracks. Not due to the temp or whatever.
just seen this video. Great video, and Piastri defintiely has a lot of potential and after saudi this year, people were hyping him up saying he's going to beat lando. I think Lando still has the pace over oscar. China, oscar struggled before safety car and getting damage. He just wasn't at Lando's pace. He'll improve over time but lando is still the better of the two
Looks like the gap is closing! Lando still has the upper hand atm but Oscar’s pretty good consistency is showing towards the end of the first half of the season. Definitely cool to see as a McLaren fan
Side note , nobody called Alain Prost the professor on the paddock this is something that came out of the media but is not true , You can see recent Peter winstor video , where he explain this miss conception
Piastri's outstanding ability compared to his competitors of his rookie F3 and rookie F2 championships, was his ability of being kinder on his tires, wearing them out a lot less, so they are fresher towards the end of a stint. But F1 is F1. And the McLaren car is not one of the better ones. Quite a few drivers Mclaren have had driving for them recently having poor results. So clearly its the nature of the car design thats "chewing up" tires.
The Race podcast said something interesting regarding his driving style(I'm sure they've got inside knowledge). They said he prefers a much more forwards aero balance than norris, in fact even said so much that only two other drivers have preferred this very high level forwards aero balance, that being Schumi and Verstappen who've known to love those really pointy, edgy but fast cars, quite a unique style. So I wonder whether the McLaren requires a certain style of driving to protect the tyres and hence is finding it harder to manage the tyres so far
@@henrywilliams8313 Not as reliable as the drivers themselves. They both have similar driving styles and hence have similar complaints driving the McLaren.
@@manavkumar6590they have similar styles because he's very adaptable. He's able to adapt to a different driving style. But his preffered style is as mark hughes mentioned.
@@henrywilliams8313 Wrong. How do you know Piastri is adaptable? Norris has echoed the same complaints that Piastri has with the car and has gone on to claim that the McLaren doesn’t suit his driving style. They both prefer oversteer and they both like to ‘U’ a corner. Make Hughes doesn’t know what he’s talking about here. None of this changes the fact that Piastri is simply slower as of now

We have just had the China GP. and after 14 laps Lando was 9.5 secs clear of Oscar. After 20 laps Oscar got damage but Lando gave a masterclass in tyre and race management. Also his sprint quali was sesational , One of the best wet quali ever seen. 1,25 secs faster than Lewsi and 2 secs faster than Alonso and Max . That shows why he is so gentle on tyres. Its all touch and feel and why he came a strong second in the race. Lando was exceptional.
Oscar has adapted to the McLaren but needs to care for his tyres just a little bit more and maybe adopt more Prostness, I prefer aggressive drivers myself! I do believe the McLaren is built around Lando's driving style, and Lando will always have that edge over him until changes are made. Oscar is young, but lets face it the average F1 WDC winner wins a title by their 4th season and by their 10th season if they have not won a title their chances of winning a title drops significantly. Jenson, Andretti (forgot the name of the 3rd driver) won their titles in their 10th-12th season. So all F1 drivers need to crack on 4-10 years passes quickly to make sure they aren't just seat fillers.
@@F1Unchained Yes, I think it was, because when Dan was having issues with the car, it was noted that car suited Lando and they didn't want to change that!
The car has been that way since before Lando joined the team, he has just adapted to it better. People need to stop using the "the car is built around the other driver" as an excuse for why they're driver isn't doing better. Oscar is a great talent and will learn how to manage his tyres, but that is just not it.
Oscar is delusional. Prost's driving style was one that could make tires last almost as long as he wanted whilst maintaining pace. If he's wearing tires at an accelerated rate, well then he's just not emulating Prost.
i dont think he'll ever get to beat lando. pace doesnt really get better once you get into f1, only tyre management and race management does. but his pace is very rarely on par/better than lando's
@@matmatmatamatvsjdjfhyeah because of tyre management. Pace wise he's on his level as seen on low deg tracks last year and jeddah this year, his pace in races is fine. It's tyres sometimes limits him atm.
@@rhysmeredith2174 here's another way to determine true pace, on tracks where deg/tyre management isn't much of an issue he's just as fast as lando over race trim. Races like jeddah this year or silverstone last year for example. There's more examples I can give.
Oscar needs to qualify ahead of Fernando. Hardly anyone can pass "The Great Wall of Alonso." Chasing the whole race wrecks tyres, exacerbating the problem
Excellent point. In fact following any other driver is bad news for deg, so the obvious conclusion would be that he needs to be more consistent with his qualifying so that he can spend more time at the front of the race, or at least in some space as the front of the field stretches out a bit. There’s also his lack of F1 experience at play, but I think you may have rather cleverly hit upon a big chunk of the problem.
It's really hard to understand what's the reason for that, cause everytime i watch an onboard from Oscar, he looks very very smooth on the wheel. It might be a certain way that he sets up the car for himself that costs him tyre wear. Perhaps Lando is more comfortable with running the car with a bit more understeer in the race to protect the rears? But again Oscar's very smooth and his driving hides the oversteer of the car. It could also be that Lando adapts better to the situations where his tyres have gone off. I know for a fact that Leclerc is always faster with dead rear tyres than others with dead rears. Remember Monza last year. Sainz had better traction suggesting he had a bit more rear tyre, but Charles was just faster with dead tyres than Carlos with almost dead tyres.
Nah, norris is always asking for more downforce on the front, he actually said in an interview post race that he doesn't really care about the rear tyres, he just needs a strong front end, which mclaren really struggle to have because their car has such a weird driveability.
This title is misleading. Thanks for inviting me to watch, expecting an in depth answer, and giving me a ten minute explanation of what the question is and why it exists.
Piastri also has some Sargent issues. He doesn’t seem to know just how the car gets upset when going over curbs. Sargent just seems to always hit them in a way when you see the wreck following, you say, of course he wrecked. Look how he approached and ran over the curb. You need to upset the car over a curb in a line that chucks it the way it helps. George has this problem as well. Just like Max seems to know exactly what will happen and seems to always correct it perfectly.
and oscar.. he had to trade places to look what ever his name is.. better, its like ham vs bottas when brit forget bottas had to let by ham so he looks good, but did you ever hear a brith abouth the fact ? No ramming off maxc aka tryto kill max was , in boy lewy words, something he had to do..
When when i first got my license, i thought i was the best driver in the world, only to wonder 5 years later why i didn't see i had some sort of insane death wish. Im sure the same thing happens to f1 drivers as well. Yeah of course if you just floor it the car will go faster, but so will the tyres... kids. :)
It should be mandatory three stops for every single race. It makes the sport so much more entertaining. All this tire maintenance makes us sport so boring imo
I would though argue that tyre maintenance is a key part of strategy. Which makes it interesting, if you like watching things go fast and always pushing. then watch drag racing. I don’t see why we need to reduce strategy to allow drivers to push all the time. That just causes more issues where having a disadvantages car will highly impact results leading to less surprise drives (Yuki’s points in Japan… etc.)
Lots of butthurt snowflakes in comments but its true for now, Oscars tire management is holding him down compared to Lando. I personally noticed that at Hungary 2023 if memory serves me well.

Piastri is a better driver than Norris but the McLaren doesn't suit him combined with Zac Brown favouring Lando. He should get out of McLaren asap. Put him in a Redbull or Ferrari and he would challenge Max and LeClerc for a title. Lando is only decent in a McLaren, why do you think he didn't leave. He had a chance to go to Redbull and turned it down. He probably had a chance to go to Ferrari as well before they went for Hamilton. I think Lando knows deep down he isn't good enough to win a title and thats why he stayed. I think Piastri should buyout his contract and go to Redbull if Max leaves. His other option would be Aston if Stroll is finally moved on. Piastri and Alonso would be a great combo and they seem to really get along. I feel Piastri doesn't gel with Norris imo. He also will never win a title at mclaren as they won't ever have the fastest car.

Success in F1 doesn't come overnight. Give him some time, imo he is showing why someone put him in the car to start with. Wait, I think we will all enjoy seeing his success in the future.
I completely agree
Imagine an F1 where drivers were allowed and able to push the car to its absolute limit lap after lap without worrying about tyre (tire) management or fuel saving. Being able to see the true potential of the modern cars on a Sunday (and not just on a Saturday during qualifying) .. Modern F1 is slowly dying.
It would still be the same people leading. Leclerc and Max are probably the most naturally fast drivers on the grid now.
I think we need to relax especially after he had such a great rookie season and still pushes Lando. Sometimes teams outpace other teams development in Formula One. It’s a part of the process.
Side note Jim Clark was the greatest driver of all time, in every class.
CONGRATS ON 34K LETS GO!
Thank you my friend ❤️
Driving “straight” doesn’t mean “smooth”, it means taking more of a V shape approach to corners, where you spend more time going in a straight line and getting the car rotated more aggressively in a shorter time. Max and Charles drive this way too
This is a part of it but he mentions that smooth is the biggest factor
I don't think that Max and Charles drive a V shape line. That's vettel
@@hamza.kavkaz Correct, Vettel is a v shaped driver. Max is short corners but is far from v shaped.

I am sure he will beat Lando on occasion as that is the nature of F1 but not consistenlty and Lando has consolidated his position.
he has made progress?? he’s not far off lando as he was last year?? stella literally said his tyre management has improved from last year.
@@nicolekovala I said he had improved or didnt you read my comment. However this year Oscar has only outqualified Lando once so far and even if he has improved his tyre managemnet it hasnt put Lando under any pressure.who still well ahead in the races.
@@bjs7442yes i read ur comment thanks. part of his progress is his tyre management improving. he’s not putting lando under pressure too much at the moment but he will very soon. it’s his second season

I feel the same way
the mclaren was a back marker for the first half of the season so the comparisons don't make sense. as soon as the car was competitive he was at the front
Then how did Charles manage a 1 Stop in Japan, doing 25 or so laps on the Medium?
Charles actually has had better race pace than Sainz overrall throughout their entire time together at Ferrari. This year, his biggest issue has been his qualifying, which I'm sure he'll sort out soon enough.
But he did a 1 stop at Suzuka
Literally everyone was saying that in Suzuka.
The heavy cars is the problem for most drivers in my opinion like Daniel and Lewis for instance. We need lighter cars back asap
I agree here as well
just seen this video.

I bet you’re pretty pleased with his recent races then lol
Piastri's outstanding ability compared to his competitors of his rookie F3 and rookie F2 championships, was his ability of being kinder on his tires, wearing them out a lot less, so they are fresher towards the end of a stint.
But F1 is F1. And the McLaren car is not one of the better ones. Quite a few drivers Mclaren have had driving for them recently having poor results. So clearly its the nature of the car design thats "chewing up" tires.
Not working is a stretch his only issue is tyre wear and hes not expected to beat lando for atleast another year

piastri is doing a great job
The Race podcast said something interesting regarding his driving style(I'm sure they've got inside knowledge). They said he prefers a much more forwards aero balance than norris, in fact even said so much that only two other drivers have preferred this very high level forwards aero balance, that being Schumi and Verstappen who've known to love those really pointy, edgy but fast cars, quite a unique style. So I wonder whether the McLaren requires a certain style of driving to protect the tyres and hence is finding it harder to manage the tyres so far
They obviously don’t know what they’re talking about. Piastri and Norris have both admitted to having very similar driving styles and similar setups.
@@manavkumar6590 it was mark hughes, he's a pretty reliable source, he knows his stuff in the paddock

I’m not sure if it’s built around Lando but it helps that he’s been there for a while
@@F1Unchained Yes, I think it was, because when Dan was having issues with the car, it was noted that car suited Lando and they didn't want to change that!
the car does not suit norris at all, but norris is easily the best/second best most adaptable driver on the grid.
Even Lando has said that his car doesn't suit him that well
The car has been that way since before Lando joined the team, he has just adapted to it better.
It was a intresting comparison forsure but in some ways I can see it but his tire wear is far from there
It is a pleasure to watch your videos

@@F1Unchained You really did your homework when it comes to Formula 1
Piastri is the real deal !! He will get an epiphany soon about the tires and leave Norris into dust. He is that good.. rising star imo ! 🕺

i dont think he'll ever get to beat lando. pace doesnt really get better once you get into f1, only tyre management and race management does. but his pace is very rarely on par/better than lando's
@@matmatmatamatvsjdjfhyeah because of tyre management. Pace wise he's on his level as seen on low deg tracks last year and jeddah this year, his pace in races is fine. It's tyres sometimes limits him atm.
@@henrywilliams8313We see their true pace in Qualifying and Lando tends to have the edge ( on average ) there too.
Hamilton didnt DNF in Cota 2023, he got desqualified.
I talk about it but it’s mainly overdriving/pushing
@@F1Unchained but he's smooth af
Nah, norris is always asking for more downforce on the front, he actually said in an interview post race that he doesn't really care about the rear tyres, he just needs a strong front end, which mclaren really struggle to have because their car has such a weird driveability.

This is a problem for a lot of drivers. It a very good point
Poor comparison, Piastri has far more natural speed and great race craft, cannot come close to comparing to Sergeant!
I think that his problem in tyer managment sims bigger also beacuse lando is very strong in race pace

When when i first got my license, i thought i was the best driver in the world, only to wonder 5 years later why i didn't see i had some sort of insane death wish. Im sure the same thing happens to f1 drivers as well. Yeah of course if you just floor it the car will go faster, but so will the tyres... kids. :)
He will learn and adapt

Both Lando and Carlos stated in interviews that the Mclaren was difficult to drive.
