    Coming from a Norris fan, I do think Piastri has more raw talent than Norris, and it won’t take him nearly as long to get a win. Though, he’s obviously being helped by McLaren having the most competitive car they’ve had in years. I’d argue Norris’ recent performances have only been stronger because he’s been in F1 for 5 seasons now. As much as it pains me to say, I don’t think it’ll take long for Piastri to overtake Norris.

      You know I'm Norris' biggest fan too but I just get glimpses from Oscar that blow me away considering he has only been in the car one full season. F1 is all about being in the right place at the right time and yeah we may not be giving him as much praise if he ended up at Alpine. But still he just looks like he has everything to be an incredible driver for many years to come.

His great job was overshadowed by how much faster Mercedes and red bull were in 2020. In Austria he showed genuine pace and throughout the whole season as well he was really good. Oscar has been given a great opportunity where other than the red bulls the field has been extremely close and he’s had a great car to show his talents

      @@speedsk368 Until Miami, the McLaren was behind the Red Bulls and Ferraris. Yet again, McLaren had produced a car that was not as good as its competitors. The Miami updates turned its fortunes around. I also think Miami updates gave Piastri a car that is more aligned with his natural driving style. At Monaco, Piastri seemed to have the car dialled in by the end of FP1 because, in FP2, Piastri only went out on the mediums and hard tyres. Piastri had an additional set of softs for Q3 compared to Norris. By the end of the season, Piastri will overtake Perez and possibly Sainz in the drivers' standings.

    It’s such a shame that success in F1 has become synonymous with who can manage their tires better. What happened to the days of admiring who had the raw speed and ability to whip their car around a track the fastest, for an entire race? Pirelli tires would have destroyed or put in different light the epic battles between Prost/Senna, Alonso/Shumacher, Hunt/Lauda. And not to take away from a what Alonso is accomplishing now at his age, but part of his current ability to compete I think is due to the racing not being as intense as it used to be. It’s all about managing the tires over the race instead of the pure effort of speed, which of course means it’s is less physically demanding (in comparison to days of old).

    • @Tzomthekliafafanboy
      @Tzomthekliafafanboy 3 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, in Abu Dhabi 2010 the hard tires lasted an entire race, now Pirelli made tires that degrade faster

    • @MechanicalSculptor
      @MechanicalSculptor 3 месяца назад +2

      I think the racing would be spiced up if you could run different tyre combinations on your car at any given time, like in the old days. For example, you might want to run hards on the back and softs or mediums on the front. And if each race had say, at least one or maybe two compulsory pit stops, it would throw up a multitude of different race strategy possibilities, with different teams and individual drivers on a broad range of strategies throughout a race. It would leave both commentators and spectators guessing until the end, as to who got it right and will come out on top.

    Good video. Especially about how the McLaren car behaves, there isn't a lot of talk about that. I believe as McLaren get their chassis and underlying issues sorted (like handling issues/quirks) and make the car more consistent, Oscar's race pace and tyre management will improve and accelerate. Especially in 2025 when the new car has been completely designed in the new wind tunnel.
    One thing I want to mention however is something that nobody seems to touch upon when talking about Oscar or his driving style or why he struggles with tyre management (as all rookies do). Oscar is an extreme short corner driver and is very aggressive on the brakes and throttle. He straightens his car up and stands on the throttle out of the corner as early as possible - you can see this on his onboards. He also has one of the highest minimum speeds on the grid for cornering. All things considered, his natural driving style and lines seem to have elements of Max Verstappen, Michael Schumacher, Alonso and Prost about it - kind of a mix that's reminiscent of. But he's also learning from Lando too now and he's picked up a lot from him. Lando is a lot smoother and gentler with the McLaren and typically goes into the corner with higher entry speed but is smoother on the application of the brake and throttle. Lando also has smoother and gentler lines through the corners and has a longer but slightly slower exit out of them. Lando's style and smoothness has been likened to Button's in the past.
    In terms of car setup and handling preferences, while Oscar and Lando are quite similar, there's still differences to be had. Lando seems to prefer a much more balanced car that caters to his aforementioned driving style. Oscar on the other hand I believe prefers a slightly pointier car that he can live with right on the ragged edge and go on maximum attack allowing him to be super aggressive with his corner speeds. You'll often see Oscar take a bit more downforce than Lando which might be for this reason.

    • @henrywilliams8313
      @henrywilliams8313 3 месяца назад +1

      Mark Hughes has mentioned that Oscar prefers alot more front end, in fact even compared to verstappen or shumacher in terms of ability to deal with a very pointy car.

    • @RockSolitude
      @RockSolitude 3 месяца назад

      @@henrywilliams8313 If that's true that's insane because Max likes an insanely pointy car, perhaps the pointiest on the grid, followed only by Daniel Ricciardo. I would suggest then that Oscar also likes a strong enough rear-end that allows him to get planted and accelerate as soon as possible out of a corner, because Max and Ricciardo all prefer loose rear-ends.

  • @michaelcobbin
    @michaelcobbin 3 месяца назад +10

    It’s pretty clear that the McLaren is a hard car to learn and has been for a while, which explains Piastri tyre management issues, especially on high-deg circuits. Norris has learnt to manage this over time and has been in the car for almost 5.5 years. Norris has had the opportunity to learn and manage the tyre management issues without being in the spotlight because he flew under the radar in his first two years in F1. Norris only got one podium in his first two years of F1. Piastri was up near the top of the grid in his rookie season due to his raw talent, hence the spotlight on this learning experience. Piastri tyre management will be significantly better by the end of the year due to additional race pace experience.

      "Piastri was up near the top of the grid in his rookie season due to his raw talent" you need to add and a more competitive Mclaren which Lando in his first two years did not have. • @fin-ed6oj
    @fin-ed6oj 3 месяца назад +4

    IMO, arguably Oscar's best race in Formula 1 so far was the 2023 British GP. Unfortunately he finished 4th due to the unlucky timing of the safety car, but his race pace was genuinely less than 0.1s off Lando for the whole race, with no drop off. And it was only his first race with the huge upgrades. It was a prime example of how Oscar was immediately good enough to fight for podiums, and even wins, as long as the track is low degradation...

    Once Oscar starts getting treated equally he will finish in front of Norris imo. Currently Norris is being given a cushy ride combined with the fact he got very lucky for his first race win in Miami. Oscar has been done over by his team on multiple occassions this year. Firstly, they pitted him 30 seconds before the vsc in miami when he was leading the race which massively benefitted Norris. If not for that dumb move Oscar would likely won in Miami. Instead they pitt him, he loses his position due to the vsc and then sainz takes him out of the race resulting in no points.
    Next he finishes on the front row at imola and his team incompetently doesnt tell him that Magnussen is behind him in qualifying and costs him another podium or possible race win. Then he finishes 2nd at monaco. Oscar should be on at least 100 points if his team doesn't continue to screw him over and favour his team mate. Oscar's talent will win out regardless of Zac manipulating Norris race results.
    What you also fail to mention is that Piastri is generally in dirty air and his team is directing him to push to help out his team mate meaning his tyres can go off early whereas Norris can drive exactly how he wants thus saving the tyres. Treat them equally mclaren and let's see who is the better driver. Maybe they are protecting Norris from getting shown up and losing his confidence.
    Other teams know what's going on at mclaren and how Oscar is being hobbled. Once he is out of contract it won't be hard for better teams to convince oscar to leave if mclaren continue to favour the inferior Norris. It's obvious Norris requested favouritism to stay. Dumb move Zak.

    Lando has improved massively in race pace this year, he has probably one of the best tyre management skill on the grid I would say. However, we haven't seen the same improvement in quali, if you compare his quali sessions this year and 2021/2022, he was always putting that car in positions that it shouldn't have been at, whereas this year, he hasn't really had smooth quali sessions and I also don't think he's managed to get everything out of the car. That's the area where he needs to improve now because Oscar is already a lot closer to him in quali than he was last year, and if that car is capable of getting poles, it would be a huge advantage given the fact that the difference in race pace is apparently minimal now. He needs to step up in quali.

      It's worth mentioning too that Oscar is potentially closer to Lando already than what Lando was to Carlos Sainz this time in his second season. If lando joined f1 now, he would also be extracting similar performances if not better than Oscar. I think the main issue is that Lando cracks under pressure when he thinks a pole or podium is possible, or if he thinks he can beat Max. Right at the pointy end of the grid when the stakes get high and the pressure higher, he gets tunnel vision, starts to lose his nerve a bit and starts making mistakes. He becomes "desperate" and anxious (for lack of a better word) when he doesn't need to. He will improve with time and experience in this area.

      @@saahil_xd I am aware that one of the key traits of Lando is his adaptability and his ability to drive on razor edge margins of the car's sweet spot, which is why he is one of the few drivers that could be fast with the McLaren. However, Carlos was also fast with the McLaren. Maybe the car was inconsistent and maybe he couldn't get the most out of it like Lando, but he still did pretty well, and again he was able to beat Lando over a season and in most races. He was more consistent. That comes a lot down to experience, as it does with Oscar and Lando now, however, again, Carlos Sainz was not rated as a top driver back then, just as a very good midfielder. It's also worth noting that just as Oscar has been helped by Lando, Lando was helped by Sainz and his data. Lando is in his prime now and is considered a better (and faster) driver than Sainz. Even if the car is better now and less unpredictable/inconsistent (though it still has the same quirks, just at less magnitude), there is still something to be said for Oscar being this close to Lando (who's at his best pace-wise) already, and how he's rapidly reaching Lando's level. If rookie Lando and rookie Oscar where to be dropped into today's car at the same time, I reckon they would be pretty much equal on straight pace, with only each driver's strengths and weaknesses, individual qualities and different driving style making the difference at different points. It also has to be said, Oscar also had a reputation for being extremely adaptable (in his junior career but even at McLaren) so I find it hard to count him out against Lando or Carlos if he was dropped into a 2019 McLaren.

F1 tyre management is something that people learn with time and experience racing in F1 with F1 Pirelli tyres. You can't learn it any other way. It has taken Lando years to get where he is now, and it can be all the more complicated with a tricky car that you need to adapt to lap-to-lap, corner-to-corner, as the McLaren is famous for.

      @@RockSolitudeI'm not criticizing him, I'm just saying that for me, at this moment, he is behind Norris in terms of performance due to his tire management. He has only slightly improved this aspect in his first year, but the very last races (after my initial comment) still show some positive signs. I will be delighted to welcome his talent when he fully performs in all areas, especially tire management. But of course, I consider that he has a lot of potential, he is very good in all other aspects of racing (despite some recent mistakes, especially in qualifying).

    honestly, i think this will end up being a rosberg-hamilton situation, but piastri will be the rosberg. his tyre management is pretty bad, but he will learn to manage his tyres over time. the problem is, you dont really GAIN pace over your formula 1 career. thats the thing you were born with and the thing you improved in junior series. and his pace, tyre deg excluded, is still about a tenth behind norris, on some circuits even 2-2.5. it would be a great battle between these two, but lets see where piastri’s ceiling is. dont forget norris keeps improving even after 5 years in f1! hes only one year older. really looking forward to 2026. i think thats when we’ll see a good battle between those 2.

      Typically on the weekends when Oscar is up to about three tenths off of Lando in raw pace (quali pace), it’s when Lando is running an upgrade. On an absolute even playing field raw pace, they’re within about a tenth of each other and it chops and changes week to week, track to track regarding which one is faster. They’re both really good drivers, top shelf and so evenly matched when it comes down to absolute speed.

    • @jcoekwfkelsjbx
      @jcoekwfkelsjbx 3 месяца назад

      @@MechanicalSculptor this hasnt really happened this year. ironically, oscar was within 1 and a half tenths to lando in miami (qualifying) when lando did have upgrades, but in australia and japan, the gap was pretty big even though they both had the exact same car. that was more of a thing last year although still, piastri has improved, last year he had weekends where he was even 4 tenths off, like in austin and brazil.

      @MechanicalSculptor 3 месяца назад

      @@jcoekwfkelsjbx Yep, you’ve made your point well and changed my mind. So, evidently Oscar is still slower than Lando rather than them being about equal, though over the long haul and with added experience I’d expect Oscar to ultimately have the edge in raw speed. This of course is anecdotal and only time will really tell, but for the time being I’ll just be enjoying their inter-team rivalry, and their exploits against the rest of the field. Cheers 🙂

      @@MechanicalSculptor its tough to say. some drivers progress more than others. look at sainz for example. hes progressed so much in the last 2 years and he much older. on the other hand there are drivers that peak early. its tough to say with oscar. i think he’ll improve, but not quite enough. because norris, although hes been in f1 for 5 years, still can improve and will improve his mental side. we’ll see in 26.

      Put it on the podium twice in two years, and consistently into the points. Way better than any other Renault driver of the time. He made that bonafide lower middle order car fast pretty frequently. For this reason, you might recall, nobody was criticising him at the time, the criticism only came when he put himself into a McLaren that he couldn’t get his head around.

      I would say Piastri and Lawson are future champions, i just don’t see Bearman winning a championship. Lawson has good chances to replace Perez for 2026 and Piastri already has a race winning car. If Ollie goes to Haas in 2025, he will just stay there until Lewis retires. Then he will be Leclercs number two driver and if you look at what happened to Raikkonen and Sainz, Ollie will probably just get fired for some stupid reason and never win a title

    Piastri is a great driver but his junior career , alhtough very good was not sensational. It has been hyped. He did not win any chamionship until Formula renault Eurocup and he took two years coming 8th in the 1st year. He then won F3 as a rookie but only 4 points ahead of Logan Sargeant who was third. He then won F2 as a rookie. Lando was only ever beaten by one driver George Russell in F2 and he won five other chmamponships as a rookie. I dont think your anlysis of their driving styles is supported by others. Peter Windsor says Oscar has short corners and Lando is not long corner but half way and it is Lando that has delicate and smooth inputs and Oscar is more agreesive. Oscar has now raced in 30 GP plus sprints which is the equivalent of what was two full seasons.. I am sure Oscar will win a race this year or at worst next year but that doesnt mean he is a better driver than Lando. He has the benefit of a competitive Mclaren which Lando hasnt really had until now. Yes Oscar has got to improve his tyre and race strategy . However its wrong to assume that every driver with enough laps under his belt becomes good at it. Lando and Lewsi are exceptional. Oscar will improve but will he improve enoughnot to beat Lando but do it regularly. That I think is unlikely..
