Destiny 2: The Final Shape Review

- Through its campaign, its new destination, its new activities, and its post-campaign story continuation, The Final Shape is as close as Destiny has ever gotten to the original promise of the game when Bungie first described a shared-world sci-fi fantasy shooter set in a far-flung future. This isn't just Destiny 2 as the best it's ever been--this is Destiny 2 as it always should have been.

Best expansion in their franchise. I am quite happy that it ended so well. I can go away or stay and be content whatever I decide to
The copium is actually insane. This is hilarious.
@@TheFirstCurse1 nah it's fire
@@TheFirstCurse1 Let me guess, you're still hung up on The Taken King?
@@bepisaxe4464 The Taken King was the best expansion of this series, followed by Forsaken, then Rise Of Iron or Witch Queen in 4th place.
@@TheFirstCurse1 No way is TTK better than Forsaken, and No way is Forsaken better than TFS.
They did it. Finally done. After a decade or so Bungie has delivered the version of the game they always wanted to....
Bungus
Now watch as they go ten steps backwards next expansion
Is this impressive? It finally took them a decade to drop a decently paced expansion
They've always wanted to make an overpriced mediocre expansion?
I always thought the name of the last expansion, "The Final Shape", was a reference to the game itself. This is the final shape of Destiny the game. The thing they always wanted it to be.
That said, they're still lacking some ideas they've presented over the years so perhaps this isn't the final shape, just a more complete one.
You cant start by shooting the head of a tormentor
that hurt me aswell
Yeah... that was painful to see 😂
I’m gonna say it, this is expansion wouldn’t have been possible in terms of how well it did story wise if it wasn’t for Byf and Myelin, and what the work they’ve done covering the story for the last 10 years
Facts! 😏 We owe those guys a lot.
This comment deserves more recognition as do those channels
They earned it. It's an actual complete expansion and they pulled off some avengers endgame payoff moments too
Putting a huge spoiler (11:32) into a game review. Yikes
That definitely wasn't a spoiler. Let's be real not like destiny is really story based to where something can get spoiled. Besides people that want to play it hace okayed it already spoken from someone that's played it since day one. Anyone that joins to see what is about probably not into the story anyways and just want to do the activities.
Its only a spoiler if there's context provided, which there wasn't.
How?
75 hours those are rookie numbers gotta pump those up
How do u unlock the 12 player activity?
It's unlocked for you, you don't have to do anything
Sony First party. That's the only thing Destiny was missing to have a high score in a review.
Does small arena size really make the expansion a full point lower than a 10?
Good review.
What is amazing is that they did most of the best part work in 6 month with Prismatic, Dread and even the new updated ending had it been the original alternate ending it would haven't been that hard hitting.
It's always good to delay and focus to achieve something great rather than just completing timelines and best part they gave Onslaught to compensate the 6 month wait period.
i really hope they have the passion and drive and money to keep going. Bungie has so much creativity (most of the time) and destiny is just so good i would hate to see it go :(
8th Destiny 2 Expansion... Let that sink in...
Yes, this isn’t your CoD or sports games, this is an MMO, where one game gets constantly updated for over a decade.
to be fair the first two werent really expansions
How could would it be I we could challenge people to duels like something from borderlands
Can't wait for D3. With TFS, my appetite has grown harder
Bungie made it pretty clear they don’t want to make a Destiny 3 because that’d involve wiping years of players’ loot, given they already announced a D2 expansion for 2025.
They must have big team now to build an expansion like this, it was very good
The best campaign of all time hands down the best campaign of a video game ever it even gaved us answers for about the light and dark as well
Can you get off of your knees for 2 seconds?
Have you played any other good story oriented games like Alan Wake, Half-Life or Halo?
Can a new player jump in?
I help new players.
Yes. While it’s the end of the Destiny light and dark saga, it’s not the end of Destiny 2. There’s something for everyone.
It’s really intuitive. I haven’t played in a long time and i jumped back in with a bunch of questions that were consistently answered and really was easy to understand
This was a good review 👏
The final cutscene carries it.
Bungo delivered 9/10 best campaign hands down
Maybe a hot take, but I think Witch Queen was a better campaign
@@queueeeee9000 not a hot take at all, i totally agree, im not saying the final shape is bad, but witch queen was a lot better and more challenging on Legendary at the time
@@GarbageThoughts cool cool. I think we're in the honeymoon phase of TFS which is awesome. It's feels like a really great expansion for sure. Legendary was for sure more difficult in the WQ. If anything, the last mission in TFS is ridiculously difficult but other than that, I agree.
WQ just had such a good story and narrative. It'll be really hard to replicate that
@@queueeeee9000 I prefer this one far more, I actually cared about the characters instead of what was shown in Witch Queen
@@bfedezl2018 that's fair. I can totally see why TFS is people's favorite. It's good for sure. Bringing back Cayde was wild, in a good way.
Alright fine I’ll return to destiny for the 2rd time

DO NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO. It contains major spoilers for the campaign!
Something that should have been mention in the title.
It’s a review? It’s been weeks since release? Of course it does.
I feel like the unofficial spoiler embargo has been lifted from the community at this point.
If you’re behind, it’s your own fault.
It's a review of the game, not a commentary on what happened
For anyone doubting, I was prompted to make this comment after the review showed footage of a cutscene in which the Witness kills a significant character. Totally unnecessary to include that.
Thank you sony for cracking that whip.
They know what Bungie are capable of, they just need a nudge in the right direction some time.
The original Halo trilogy is still legendary. The fact that Bungie struck gold twice with Halo and Destiny is insane. Between the two they've broken many sales records.
I came back during into the light after being gone for seven years. It was like dating an ex-girlfriend…a bad idea.
Wow that expansion sure looks different. I like the glowing orb you have to move to a spot, and the shield from vault of glass. Very new and different
Gamers when games use gameplay that's part of said game instead of being a completely different game entirely for no reason:
I'm waiting for it to be free. I've given Bungie enough money
I played it four years ago and was fed up with it. Anything worthwhile to return to?
Yes.
This is bungie best work since taken king. The campaign on legendary is harder than usual. You can definitely solo it but biggest tip I have is to hide and peak shoot as you need.
Tbh probably not…. Not for the price. Its probably a decent story, but the core is the exact same. Episodes are seasons just reworded.
It's a 9 well done Bungie
Such a dramatic simplification of reality to say that “they finally delivered the version they wanted”.
Destiny is an evolving game. Final Shape is not “the version they wanted”. It’s just one more version, and one that has everything else that came before it as foundation.
It’s not like “the game is only worth it now”. No, if you waited all this time to finally play, I’m sorry to tell you that you lost great moments delivered by vanilla Destiny (Vault of Glass), Taken King, Warmind, Forsaken, as well as many smaller moments such as Warmind, Menagerie.
Destiny is an ever evolving game, and I think that one thing that makes it so clear is the transformative work they have done over classes in this game. It is the kind of stuff that, for other games, would be a Destiny 3, but here is just part of how the game is: ever changing.
In fact the core gameplay loop of Destiny remains *very similar* to its very first year. You do basic activities to level up until you get to a soft cap. Then you engage in end game activities, which at the time were nightfalls, raids and today remain nightfalls, raids but also add dungeons to the loop now.
The campaign delivery is much better now than it was in year one, but it also has only a temporary impacted on the actual gameplay loop, just like all campaigns delivered thus far.
In that sense, Destiny remains quite similar to its first year when it comes to the basics, and I think that is why it survived that year and continues to survive now.
"Destinies future has never looked more exciting"
I struggle to understand how people can stay this optimistic. Maybe if Destiny had a rough start and then got better and better, sure. But they have gone up and down in zigzag motions the entire franchises runtime. Clearly Final Shape is great because they felt absolutely forced to make something great, because disappointing people in the finale of the 10 year saga would have been disastrous. Just like all other times destiny was great were those times they absolutely needed a success to stay in business - and just like all other releases without that pressure have been nothing to write home about or even pretty bad at times. Destiny looks exactly like the last 10 years have shown - a game that only "overdelivers" when it absolutely has to. Destinys future doesnt look bright, it looks profitable and always balancing the line between effort put in and money made back, whatever that means for the consumer experience.
Despite my enjoyment, this is very true haha
It’s good.
ECHOES is pretty bad though.
Week 2… we love to pre-judge…
Dude it's fine.
It's a good season in new packaging. Stop being dramatic
@@kutlumzrak2689 They literally said the seasonal model had run its course and you literally just called it a season. I don't blame you - it's because it is a season...reskinned.
Loved when the witness started witnessing all over the place. Jokes aside, beat expansion so far.
Great expansion but a bit of let down was putting the exotic class item in dual destiny (not against the mission) so overall it is a good 9 out 10.
Same score as IGN but reviewed way better than IGN did.
Ever know someone who just fails to meet the mark over and over again but then suddenly does something a little above average, but it seems amazing because they’ve failed so many times previously?
Yeah.
The problem with that, it’s bungie has met the mark many times before, this one just stands out more because it’s truly the best
Tell me you didn’t get enough hugs as a kid without telling me you didn’t get enough hugs as a kid
@@kbutler0615 being good at something after 9 years of mediocracy then being praised like you're the best isn't great no matter how you spin it.
Equating an opinion on a video game to childhood upbringing is very odd, you projecting?
I’m just done with it . I play on occasion on Xbox & PsPlusEssential freebies but can’t bring myself to pay Bungo any money. Adding the Legendary mode for campaign should’ve been a thing for all their expansions. Glad others are happy but I’m not interested in dropping $50+ $5 tax for FinalShape.
Ok? Thanks for the announcement? 😂 lol
This campaign was mediocre, at best.
It didn't have the in depth character development of Witch Queen (even though it's story was a horrible retcon) or the entertainment and engagement value of Forsaken. The Final Shape was just another Red War blunder, that was time filler engagement, with bits of challenges and difficulty sprinkled in.
The real story of the expansion comes in the after campaign quests. That are us just redoing the campaign missions all over again.
With all the hate that Light Fall got for doing the very same thing (campaign and story wise) I don't understand how people are gushing over it.
Was it bad? No. We've had a lot worse. But it's barely anything above passable.
As far as rating the expansion goes, seriously? We've barely scratched the surface of this thing. Give it time. But it's nowhere near (just yet) what Forsaken brought to (and how it completely changed the game) our gameplay.
least obvious bait
Idk if I can take this seriously if you think that Witch Queen retconned the Hive. Witch Queen didn't retcon anything about the Hive. Just because the Witness was the reason the Kryll turned to the darkness does not change what the Hive are.
Still the best and worst live service (sunsetting huge chunks of paid content) game out there
It's not the best live service game in any way, shape, or form. It's by far one of the absolute worst.
Sunsetting has been sunsetted. It was a terrible decision but they have backtracked it now
@@bfedezl2018the weapons were but we are still missing the base game
meh, too little too late
They stole all the content you paid for. Let that sink in...
