Synopsis: Experience the story of THE HUNGER GAMES -- 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow became the tyrannical President of Panem. THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS & SNAKES follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray's charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. With everything he has worked for hanging in the balance, Snow unites with Lucy Gray to turn the odds in their favor. Battling his instincts for both good and evil, Snow sets out on a race against time to survive and reveal if he will ultimately become a songbird or a snake.

“Sing your way out of this one Lucy Gray”
She literally did
Lolololol
From her walk alone you can see that Lucy Gray is used to an audience and having to perform.
Great example of "show don't tell"
The reaping was rigged and she already knew everything on that bowl says only one name
@@ciandryl Might as well put on a show before your possible death.

@@indigovinyl2445 yes, the mayor’s daughter was jealous. And that’s why she put a snake on that girl as a revenge
I love how snow is immediately mesmerised by her, the look on his face kills me every time at 0:40; also how he jumps up the second there is a uproar because of his Lucy
AGREE. i stand by my opinion and lowkey love story fantasy. Thier on screen chemistry is amazing and i believe sejamus is the main reason snow killed those two people and if he wasn't around lucy gray and him could have had thier happy ending.
@@alicialisowski3309definitely not. Have you read the book? Snow was completely deranged throughout it all and it definitely wasn’t just Sejanus.

Nope, but your Capitol nation will look like it 60 plus years from now 🤣 In fact, I’d say Lucy Gray INSPIRED it! 😆😂

Lmao i love they kept this in. Infact i love that most of the book stayed in and its the one most true to it. Lucy was a savage when she wanted to be
Should be ALL of it kept and stay true to book and not rewritten even in little parts that betrays Susanne writing. Most is not enough and a little change is disgraceful. Huge Games 1 was perfect in doing that. Should have hired that director and not Francis who did opposite with Catching Fire, Mockingjay and this.
@@patarp1350No one wants to see a movie that is exactly like the book in every single way. There would be no point in seeing it if you already knew every single detail of what was going to happen. It’s important to stay as true to the book as possible, but some stuff doesn’t translate well from page to screen, some things have to be cut or changed for time, and some creative liberties have to be taken, as long as the original author gives the green light for every change made.

Rachel Zegler looks really good as Lucy Gray! I don't know why people are complaining when she seems to to be tailor made for this role!
It's because people hate Rachel Zegler for not being a fan of the original Snow White and they want any movie with her name attached to fail.
Snow White is going to fail and a certain subset of terminally online people are going to see that as a victory.
I know she's going to pull through as Lucy. There is literally no one else who could have done this part. If this movie is good it will be because of her and I'm hoping it awakens all of us who loved YA dystopia novels
@@Morgan_2317 Exactly. I'm not a huge fan of the Katniss Everdeen Hunger Games movies but I'm excited for this because of Rachel Zegler. People can hate Snow White all they want but Rachel Zegler ain't a criminal so the hate and controversy shouldn't be brought into her other roles outside Snow White.

It's like Rachel Zegler was born to play the role of Lucy Gray. She was amazing throughout the movie.
Yes she has the same character
You know you’re crazy when you send someone to their inevitable death just because they used to date your current boyfriend
You are right. Mayfair seems to be ful of hate and rage. Also kind of insecure how much Billy Taupe really loves Mayfair and how much he still loves Lucy Gray and just uses Mayfair.
You know, if I was the president and one of the tributes told me that their reaping was rigged, I'd have it re-done
@@christianmaximoff3035 and if evidence finds that a specific person of reaping age rigged it, they would become the new tribute. daddy's trashy little brat Mayfair wouldn't have lasted a nanosecond in the arena.
@@christianmaximoff3035They would have to care then. At the end of the day, they really don't care which kid is killed in the hunger games. They only care that someone is.
@@TheTaylorham95 a way to handle that is to speak their language. Don't use the emotional appeal of 'sending a girl to her death', more go for the angle 'these lower districts think they have the right to undermine Panems system'
It is true no one's gonna care that some sad excuse for a man is sending an innocent girl to her death because his pwecious baby wants him to, but they're likely to care that the districts they're trying to suppress think they're entitled to go around the capitols authority for self interest
but The fact that the mayor would sentence a specific girl to death just bc her daughter doesn't like her is actually sick
Ikr?! I mentioned to my family that it probably happened before and they agreed that it's possible
@@CGwarrior12I got the feeling too that Lucy wasn't the first person Mayfair's Father sent to the games for some petty reason. Lucy told Snow in the book that District 12 hated Mayfair's family so it would make sense why.
If that was the case, I like to think in an alternate reality where Mayfair wasn't killed by Snow but things still played out how they did in TBoSaS, she would've been reaped into the next Hunger Games and her father can't do squat about it.
She's literally the Lucy Gray I picture when I read the book. I love it.
0:19 This indicates even more than in the book that Lucy Gray’s reaping was rigged.
I mean the book says it basically lol
True but never proven
@@cookiegirl1097 cause no one bothered to look into it cause of the mayor. His karma came when that hoebag got a shell in the chest at point-blank range lol
In the book it was speculated but nothing indicated it was true. There was always room for doubt. For all we know it was just an unfortunate coincidence for Lucy (fortunate in Mayfair's case). Here though it looks like they're going to make more clear.
@@cookiegirl1097yes it is proven. The girl tells Lucy later on in the book she rigged it. Lol
Lucy Gray doesn’t get mad, she gets even.
I am excited to see this movie because we can see changes being made probably because of Snow relationship with Lucy... GIving the tributes top training facilities, luxury suites, food, and making sure someone from the Capital did the reaping to keep it fair.
OMG U ARE RIGT, HE WAS A MONSTER BUT MAYBE E WAS NOT A COMPLETE MONSTER IM CRYING
have you read the book?
@@jacefaulk8792 Not yet, I am on the waitlist at my local library
@@allisongutama8110They had to make it somewhat decent to what it became later on, not because Snow had a heart but to keep people in the Capitol actually watching.
I think those changes are more about making the “spectacle” of the games even more significant. The tributes are dolled up and pampered, like the Incan mummy that was found to have been cared for, made beautiful, and anesthetized before she was offered to the gods. The more attractive and captivating the tributes are, the more money the betting stations will roll in, which means a pacified Captiol population and enriched government coffers. BoSaS shows that when the tributes were neglected, left unhealthy and dirty, Capitol citizens could dehumanize them more easily. But cleaned up, showed to be strong and beautiful, they could assuage any feelings of guilt when the lone victor went home now rich.
Mayfair: sing your way out of this one, Lucy Gray
Lucy: *sings her way to victory*
Lucy is already a fashion icon
This is before the Capitol develops their Lady Gaga sense of fashion.
lucy influenced capitol so hard
I love how that one girl laughs at her and she puts a snake down her dress….I’d love to do that to people who I really hate.
It’s funnier in context when you realize that red headed girl had her dad the mayor pay off a peacekeeper to make Lucy Grey the female tribute
@@willcc19-18why?
@@nicoletagalogon403 because Mayfair was a little tramp bully and Lucy's boyfriend cheated on Lucy with her.
There's no way that she could have planned for that. Which means Lucy Gray just showed up to the reaping with a spare snake.
She knew
Mayfair the girl who said "Sing your way out", hated Lucy, used her dads influence (the mayor) to manipulate the selection process, making Lucy became the tribute. She already knew her name will be called.
Lucy Gray knew it was going to be her name called
The next time a d12 reaping would be this interesting is when Katniss volunteers
But it won’t happened in 64 years
Maybe the 25th one (The people chose by themselves who gets send to the Arena)
Or the 50th one (4 Tributes gets send to the Arena) it’s also the year Haymitch won his Hunger Games
@@lariel19 That’s not really what I meant

I expected the snake to be bigger personally but other than that, it's perfect
Me too but now I kind of see how it makes sense to go with a smaller snake, as I feel like a bigger and thicker one would definitely catch the attention of any of the peacekeepers long before Lucy got to Mayfair so a smaller, thinner snake is not going to be as noticeable
“Sing your way out of this one Lucy Gray”

Was that Billy Taupe apologising to Lucy Gray? I loved her savageness with the snake!
Yes that's Billy Taupe.
That was spot on perfectly to the book
I love music score in this movie. James Newton Howard did a good job
James Newton Howard is an amazing composer! He is my absolute favorite one! 1:06 He did the other hunger games movies too! He’s done many great movies!
I'm guessing this was why they started sending people from the Capitol over to the district - they never go there so there'd be no chance of the reaping being fixed.
This would totally make so much sense. This was also my theory as well!
Even then, Katniss mentioned that there were some years where very coincidentally the name of a victor's kid is drawn, implying those reapings were rigged, though that was less to get those kids killed and more to make those Hunger Games "interesting" for the Capitol.
@@dafabulouslya2003 Makes sense that the Capitol would want to be the only ones who rig the show. Or at least the people in charge, I don't think the regular Capitol citizens even consider what that the games could ever be rigged or tampered with. How many of the Gamemakers know? The one who got killed off in the first movie seemed a bit of a idiot to me
she did in fact sing her way out of that one

I wish people would get off Rachel Ziegler’s back. Yes she said stupid stuff about a kids movie from a century ago but she’s young, impressionable, naive and I’m sure she’s being fed a lot of BS at Disney anyways. She’s a great actress for her age and I want to see her succeed. And any Latina succeeding is a success for any of us to me :)
Couldn’t of said it better myself
I wouldn't even say she said something stupid, just her opinion ... mixed with Disney's opinion.
It's not the first time I've heard someone hating on Prince Philip ( of Snow White ) and not the first time someone said that princesses need to be tough girls.
Listening to people and their exagerated hate, one could assume she said something like "It's the peoples' fault to starve. They shouldn't be poor."
What she said was not even that bad
@Gaia_Seraphina idk I her walking about how snows prince scenes could all be cut out od the movie was extremely rude. It seemed to me she hated the character she was playing.
@@maryhenderson1166she’s been a fan of Snow White for years 😂 even dressed up as her as a child
i think it is because the mayor manipulated the reaping in this game. that in the later games it wil be someone form the capitol (for example effie) who does the reaping.
I haven't read the book(s) yet, what did the other girl do to Lucy to make her do that and vice versa?

I LOVED the Hunger Games books & movies but never really cared about this standalone prequel book. This scene just made me interested in watching it - like that was so cunty of Ms Lucy Gray 🤭
You should definitely read the prequel! It's soooo interesting and Suzanne really shows how she's improved as a writer. The best part is, that she doesn't try to make you feel bad for Snow at all and like he was a good guy who just went down the wrong path. She makes it clear from the beginning that Snow was always a horrible, narcissist sociopath that was only looking out for himself and whatever benefitted him and his image in general when he had so many chances to do the right thing and actually be better.
You have no right to call her a clown with the way you dress up in the future
Rachel Zegler is acting her FACE off this looks amazing
What? She looked very wooden in this clip. Not an asset to this film.
I wonder what the mayor's reaction would have been like if it was his daughter who was reaped for the hunger games
Unfortunately the name was rigged, it only had lucy's name on it but had it wasnt, it would have been hilarious
For all we know, that was his daughter's name on the slip, and he simply said Lucy Gray to cover up
Why are she and her clothes so much cleaner than everyone else’s
Assuming she’s a performer so it ads to her performance
she’s not originally from district 12. she’s part of the covey, a group of traveling musicians that were forced to live out their lives there. she sticks out because of that.
0:09 That’s some pretty decent wordless acting.
Why did snow had to stand up like that😂😂🏃
Cus that’s his tribute
I keep saying I didn’t nope out during high school because this movie hadn’t come out yet. You never know what art will come tomorrow, folks. Slug through the rest for that
Rachel Zegler is totally gorgeous. Can’t wait to see this!
I can already see the people who are in denial of reality hating this comment however, For the Rachel Zegler haters, while the better than everyone else attitude she has when talking about Snow White is intolerable, SHE ALONE is the reason that I am interested in this movie & the reason I'm going to see it. Because she intrigues me as the character. She has this attitude & mystery about her that's intriguing that I always thought Katniss in the movies was missing to pull you in. Except for a few scenes in Catching Fire. Especially considering that the 2 guys considered catches from district 12 (atleast after Peeta wins) only had eyes for her. Jennifer Lawrence is very pretty but it almost seems like they used make up to lessen her beauty vs make her more intriguing. Not every female lead needs to be stunning but when 2 guys that are at the top of the pole in district 12 (especially Gale) it matters & helps make it believable. Whoever is pretending that it doesn't make any difference & draw people in is lying to themselves.
I think they picked the perfect actress for the part of Lucy. She's a great actress, she's got the it factor & draw that would make someone like snow fall for her, she's able to give a mysterious quality to the character, & she's got more chemistry with Snow than Jennifer had with Gale or Peeta, & that is mega important.
There's a reason most people are drawn to roses, diamonds, velvet, silk, fancy dresses, snow, flower meadows, etc. Because EVERYONE wants beauty in their lives. It's part of being a human.
Yes girl

I laugh and confused when i read this scene😅
This prequel moved me a lot, especially in the romantic relationship between Corolanus Snow and Lucy Gray Baird. The attraction between the two was magical. I can't believe this relationship ended like that at the end of the film when Lucy Gray disappears without explanation. I'm sure they saw each other again afterwards. Where has Lucy Gray gone? She couldn't return to District 12 because she would have been arrested. She probably went to District 13. Did she become the president of District 13? Did she join the resistance? And Snow, what did he do before becoming president of Panem? Did he secretly see Lucy Gray again? If so, has she tried to change him, to soften him, to make him good? Did they have a secret romantic relationship without either the Capitol or District 13 knowing? Did they have a child together? There is still so much to know about their lives when they were 30 or 40 or 50! I sincerely hope that there will be a sequel to this prequel because I have never felt so much desire to know the sequel to a film!
I do admit, it was sad the way their romance ended. I think I liked this one better than watching all four of the other Hunger Game movies.
