Experience the story of THE HUNGER GAMES -- 64 years before Katniss Everdeen volunteered as tribute, and decades before Coriolanus Snow became the tyrannical President of Panem. THE HUNGER GAMES: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS & SNAKES follows a young Coriolanus (Tom Blyth) who is the last hope for his failing lineage, the once-proud Snow family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With his livelihood threatened, Snow is reluctantly assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), a tribute from the impoverished District 12. But after Lucy Gray's charm captivates the audience of Panem, Snow sees an opportunity to shift their fates. Oh, that last smile from Coriolanus.. It hits different after watching the entire and rewatching this scene. It's like he is taking stock of what is entertaining. I had at first thought it was him realising for the first time that everything is not lost for him just because he got assigned a District 12 tribute. But either way, it feels horrible.

This clip just shows what a different world it was before Corelanius took over the Hunger Games and began his ruthless tyranny of the country and of the Games.
Had Katniss done that in her time, she would have been beaten severely, right there on the stage in front of her district, and sent into the games just barely breathing. But the peacekeepers weren’t as brutal back in Lucy Gray’s time - at least not the ones in 12. They wanted to send their players into the games with a chance, at least. And they probably knew that the players would be kept in captivity and starved for days before the actual games, so beating Lucy Gray would leave her too weak to even make it to the competition with the starvation she would later face in the Capital.
The Capital peacekeepers inflicted that punishment on the boy from District 2, but that was after he tried to run when he was already in the Capital. He embarrassed them by showing how easy it was to escape their rule.
And the girl who was shot and killed in the cage was also punished for embarrassing the Capital rule.
But when Snow turned the Games into a performance, he made sure the contestants went into the arena with full bellies and warm clothing… not because he cared about them, but because they put on a better show that way.
Yeah he basically learned from everything that happened in TBOSBS & doubled down & got more organized

It’s even more amazing considering Rachel Zegler sang live on set instead of in a studio
It is moving how the bass violin player was on the verge of tears and couldn't sing softly the way her bandmates were able to. A touching detail.

And after James Gunn taking over DC and basically firing every DCEU actors, the odds of Rachel coming back as Anthea is very low

Lucy Gray Baird is my favorite Hunger Games character and my Hunger Games crush
I haven't read a novel in over a decade, and I turned into a teenage boy falling in love with a girl for the first time again when I imagined Lucy Gray as I read the book. If I met her in real life, I would have fallen for her, but I am much closer to Coriolanus in personality, and I just know choosing love for love's sake would bring me happiness, and much regret at the same time

Why did they help the mayor’s daughter even though he’s part of district 12 and technically doesn’t have any rights like the capital?
Also how come the guards didn’t attack or run over to Lucy when she grabbed the girl’s shirt. Lucy did it so slowly there’s no way they didn’t have time to attack. You’d think the guards would at least yell at her because in my eyes that would look like an escape plan or at least a divergence
The peace keepers knew and liked Lucy grey. Also the mayor has some power just not much
I think its similar to how in the holocaust the Germans put several Jews in charge of all the rest of the Jews put in concentration camps. Diverts the hate away from just the Germans/perpetrators and some hate goes towards their own people which further divides them more to the point where a rebellion is harder without any unity.
In the prequel book, peacekeepers at that time were actually chill, and most of them were other district citizens that joined the military out of desire to be certain of the next day and have a stable future without monotone work. The movie wasn't long enough to cover it, but Coriolanus was on good terms with them despite different origins, and even in his constant inner monologue there is no indication of ill attitude towards them, which is a relatively rare for him. They nicknamed him "Gent" due to his Capitol manners, so in his case, they lacked prejudice either.

I love Rachel Zegler, and I can't wait to see more of her future projects. I think it's neat that she's starred in two projects with her real life boyfriend, Josh Andrew Rivera, though never never played a couple on screen, unless you count his character liking hers in "West Side Story."

No because it's only Lucy Gray and her Covey band who sing, other characters are aware of their singing, and the songs are placed VERY far apart throughout the film. For it to be considered a musical, ALL the main characters would have to sing at some point, the songs would have to be super close together, there can't be any awareness of the singing, and the songs would be essential to carrying the whole story forward and they weren't in this movie, they were just apart of Lucy Gray's character
