    If you’re an engineering student looking for an internship, CSWA is definitely worth getting. It will give you a competitive edge during the hiring process.

    You said right, these certification programs only focus on how experienced you are in the software but not in Mechanical Design.
    Remember, Software is just a tool. Product Design is far more ahead of that.

    After using SW for two years on our FRC team, I took the CSWA test last Sunday. As you could guess, just like in the video it was quite easy. I had watched the videos on mySolidworks just in case, ended up learning very little but gained some knowledge on shortcuts. Personally, I plan on studying for CSWP in my free time when school isn't too demanding, perhaps taking it next summer. For me the certificates are not so much for work but for university entrance. With a portfolio to back it up, I feel like it may help me out. With all those said I agree with and want to emphasize this; Solidworks is only as good as the engineering knowledge driving it. For example, if you aren't familiar with material sciences, a topology analysis won't help you much. Or if you can't calculate the distance between gears, SW ain't gonna help you. The examples I gave are easy compared to most things, but for the uninitiated, that may read this comment, just some food for thought. Let me conclude this ridiculously long comment by saying this: Before you invest in Solidworks invest in improving your engineering knowledge. I got a long way to go, and I ain't stopping soon. Have a wonderful day.

      Just wanted to give a small update. At the end of last month I took my CSWP Mechanical Design exam and passed it. İ'd say CSWP is relatively easy if you have SW experience and if you could take it for free, like I did by participating in a Dassault Systems event, then it totally is worth it.

  • @chris2444
    @chris2444 9 месяцев назад +3

    Technically you have to go through the CSWA and CSWP to be allowed to sit the CSWE, so the former two become a necessity if you want the benefits of the third. IMO, like you said with the tests not testing mechanical design theory or creativity, the CSWE is best used as a certification showing efficiency. It is an excellent sidepiece to a portfolio, showcasing that not only do you have the skills of the portfolio but the proficiency of the certificate.

  • @choppedroppeda
    @choppedroppeda 2 года назад +17

    There is an important part missing from this discussion; salary negotiation. As a entry level engineer the projects and internships you have will help you land the job. The CSWA will give you room to negotiate salary. My FSAE teammate in college got a design engineer position with an OEM and received a 5K salary bump between being hired and starting simply because he spent 3 hours taking the CSWA. That's a great ROI. It also helps you stand out from the competition. Take two resumes with the engineers have the exact same experience but one took the opportunity to get the certification and shows their proficiency and they will likely be the one that is hired. Why? Because the managers know that engineer can come in on day 1 and get to work immediately.

    • @MahdiDesigns
      @MahdiDesigns  2 года назад +4

      The CSWA is extremely basic. If having it means you can get to work on day 1 it means the nature of the work is very basic (in terms of design). I would imagine most employers would like to see some proof of a persons design skills and experience, for a recent graduate this might be projects they utilised their SolidWorks skills on. This could perhaps be projects you have designed and 3D printed parts, or even machined parts (perhaps as as part of an FSAE team). Well done to your friend but getting a bonus $5k because you have the CSWA would be very, very rare

    • @choppedroppeda
      @choppedroppeda 2 года назад +6

      @@MahdiDesigns you're video topic on CSWP not CSWA. My reference is to your video not the CSWA. In terms of salary, I would counter that it is not rare and that it actually gives you some leverage with HR. Yes, the hiring manager would like to see your projects and will use that to determine whether to hire your or not. However, the first step in the process is getting through HR to the hiring manager. In that case, HR may have 1000 applicants and the hiring manager only wants to look at 10 resumes and interview 5 candidates. Take 2 engineers with the same experience, but one has certification, and HR, not knowing the details of CSWA or CSWP, will select the person with industry certification to send to the hiring manager for review. After the interview the hiring manager will tell HR to move forward with the offer letter. HR's job is to get you as cheap as possible within the salary range for the position. For engineers those salary ranges can be as wide as $5,000-$30,000. Having the certification allows you to counter their offer and ask for more money within that salary range - not a bonus.

    I believe, the recruiters may not be aware of the certification levels, but they can mostly be impressed if one has the certification. So at list having the CSWA would help to pass through the initial screening in the job applications for a fresher or one having 2-3 years of experience.
    Maybe, I can reach up to CSWP. Beside, I would also need to consider the cost for the exams if I am using my own pocket.

    • @MahdiDesigns

    The companies are actually looking for people with education, experiences in mechanical design and good skills in Solidworks. Passing CSWA will not guarantee jobs offered. I have used SolidWorks for the last 16 years in my works but never took CSWA. If you're mechanical engineer, preparing and taking PE license in your state is much worthwhile spending your time.

      CSWA is a Joke. CSWP is a good indicator that someone is quite familiar with SW however I would not hire someone based on this it's just a confirmation that they know the software but at the same time if someone used SW for 2 years and has some examples it's also good enough prof of knowing SW. CSWE is truly an exam that shows deep understanding of all aspects of SW and if you are hurting a heavy CAD position this would likely help.

  • @hustlasstory7611
    @hustlasstory7611 3 года назад +4

    Cswa is entry level. Had to pass it to graduate college. Once in the field, it's very hard to take the exam because you have to own a solidworks license or stay at work 3.5hrs after your day is over to take it. Only really possible if your work provides you with a laptop. With that being said i think any of the tests prove that your willing to go the extra mile to take a 3hr exam. I just recently took the cswp and can say yes it does prove you know how to design a part in a time crunch. These tests aren't for engineers, they are for designers, drafters to prove they know solidworks. So if your getting a engineer position, it's kind of like pointless... there's other certifications that you can get to prove your engineering skills. The engineers i work were never required to take a solidworks class. Most learned on the job. And most don't even design in solidworks. They work along side a designer to get the design in a fast manner.

      Interesting point. I was trained in CATIA at work recently and as far as I know, the senior engineers just learned it a long time ago and more than likely do not have a cert in any CAD program.

      Currently, ME’s take 1 SW class called “Engineering Graphics 1” and a basic simulation class called Computer Aided Engineering. MET’s take 2 SW classes and get to take the CSWA for Mech Design.
      It’s basically as simple as it gets. So they are aware of the very very basics of these things, tho they may forget.
      As a ME, I decided to minor in Engineering Graphics so that could get my CSWA in Mech Design, CSWP, and the Rapid Design Certificate while in college as the exam provided is part of the course. Simulation also seems valuable for an engineer. Of all the minors available, SW seemed like the most useful.

      I definitely agree with this point. I'm currently working as a Project Engineer. It's true that knowing how CAD modeling software (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, etc.) works helps a lot, but it's definitely not required for an engineering position. From my personal experience with interviews for engineering positions, most employers care more about your EXPERIENCE and not your certifications. I can see certifications helping if you became a drafter from a technical school, but not really for engineers (at the end of the day, anybody good with using new technology can learn SolidWorks). We literally have a drafter in our office who's paid (by the hour, not salary) to model and update drawings as needed.

      I know industrial designers used SW to create aesthetic products but I don't believe its commonly used for artistic 3D modelling, except for maybe jewellery design and a few other niche areas. It depends on the kind of designing you're intendeding to do. But my answer would be no, the CSWP doesn't really make you a better designer. I would just practise surfacing, look up SW surfacing tutorials and try find something with organic surfaces (computer mouse, piece of fruit, fan blades etc) and try model it in SW as best you can
