    Just starting out with Solidworks maker and your video is one of the best teaching videos I've ever seen on any subject. The way you touch on the fine points while building the part is just what I needed.

    I have been using Inventor in my day job for around 6 years, but recently subscribed to Solidworks for home use, 3d printing etc. They are different enough to be confusing. I feel like I learned more in this one video than in many hours of other "tutorials". Thanks for doing this.

      Your are welcome, and thank you for the kind words. I too made a transition many years ago from Inventor to SolidWorks. They really do have the same functions for the most part, but the interface is different enough to make the transition a little bumpy.

    Perfect example of how small changes such as specific selections of sketch planes, use of offset geometry instead of manual sketching, and changes like extruding with an offset instead of in two directions at once (for the cylinders) actually results in a change of mass and the difference between the right and the wrong result.
    If you're off by a few grams or decimals in your answers - watch this end to end and make the changes in your methods checking the weight difference as you go.. Thanks again!

    Thanks for the video. I did my corner fillets at the very end of the design tree. this allowed me to roll back to the squared edges when I had to do the design changes for the part rework, solves all problems of trying to offset a filleted corner.

      You're welcome. I agree that placing fillets at the end of a design tree is generally a good idea, and if possible anticipating changes that will have to be made as the exam progresses is helpful. Of course, that is not always easy to do on the actual exam with parts you're seeing for the first time.

    Thanks for the video. The exam models did two of their chamfers wrong (60 degree instead of 30) which gives exactly 14208.00 for Q5. It looks like they had the inner hole faces selected instead of the edges then changed the 45 degree to 30 and moved on. Unfortunately, when the face is selected SW doesn't let you independently change the orientation of both chamfers. Changing one flips both, always leaving one at 30 and one at 60.
    You can kind of see this if you zoom in closely to one of the section views. I got the exact same values as you.

      The angle distance option only works consistently for 45 degree angles. When the angle is anything else, it is necessary to know in what direction the distance is taken. I think that is a flaw in the software, but as you point out, if you look very carefully at the section, you can determine the proper direction.

    For CSWP, is this the pattern of questions asked? 3 questions with same figure and rest 2 questions with same figure?

      Yes, but there will be more than one part to start with. But each part has multiple questions after editing. Part 2 of the exam has you opening and modifying existing parts and managing configurations as well. Part three involves creating fairly complex assemblies from existing parts and possibly parts you must make.

    I tend to do my fillet at the end so you don’t get those offset entity corner issue that came up when doing the pockets but otherwise great video.

      That is a good point. I emphasize that with my students as well, but sometimes it makes sense to put them in before an offset. In this case that didn't work out, but I make a lot of videos for my classes and do them in one take and unless I do something really off-base, I don't bother to redo them. I want them to see me run into problems and figure them out, or even make mistakes that have to be corrected so they realize that using CAD software is seldom a linear process. I appreciate the comment though.

      I appreciate the kind words. One advantage that I have in teaching software is that I don't have the deadlines that you have, so I can take as much time as I want trying out different approaches so I can pass them along to my students.

      The official practice exam has no questions like those on segment 2 and 3, which is odd, but I've been considering a video for each of them. I don't have too many students who take the CSWP, but I think it might be useful. In the meantime, SDK publishing has a prep guide written by the man who has been responsible for writing the certification exams for years. You can download files from their website once you purchase the book and that might help you.

    Is there a reason why you didnt mirror the first tube to create the second tube and flip it 45degrees?

      I don't think they are exactly the same, but if they are you could do that, but I think it might be more confusing for some people. But if that is the way that makes the most sense to you, no reason not to use it.

    I got 14216.51 grams for the first answer, there's nothing wrong with the drawing. What possibly could be the reason for this deviation?

      If the answer isn't exact or within 1% of the answer provided, there is something wrong with the drawing. Check for any under-defined sketches, make sure you didn't have a typo when entering a dimension, and make sure you selected the correct starting and ending points for dimensions. Those are the most common errors people make when completing this practice exam. If after doing that you are still off by more than 1%, send me the part file to dabbott@smccme.edu and if I have time, I'll take a look.

    I followed every step of the video and my answer for question one matched the answer to yours, but the rest didn't match? could there be a reason for this or could it be SolidWorks. But thank you for the video very good!

      It is not SolidWorks. I've demonstrated this practice exam several times, and thousands of people have taken it. I always get the same answers.
      Whenever someone comments that they don't get the same answers, they have done something that caused it. Check to see if you have any underdefined sketches; check to see that you used the global variable correctly, and make sure that you used the dimensions given rather than calculating a dimension that will be modified when you update your variables.

      I had the same issue and understood why it happens. Sometimes the global variables don't link and hence don't update when you change the value of the variables. Link them and you'll be alright.

      Because if you type them and forget to use quotes, they aren't actually linked to the variable. It just uses the value, but won't update if you make changes. If you select from the dropdown, it is always linked and you don't have to remember to add them.

      Not without seeing the model. The most common error people make on this part is assuming that both cylinders are the same dimension. One is based on X the other on Y. You might check that. If your answer is within 1% of the correct answer given, it would be considered correct on the exam. I have gotten the same answer each time I've gone through this practice exam for a class, so I think you probably overlooked something.
      You should also check for any under-defined sketches. If you have any, correct that and see if you get the right answer.

    Can we earn points for answers close to the correct answer?

      The official statement is that any answer within 1% of the expected correct answer will be considered correct. However, on this practice exam, I've found that the answers people get almost always match the correct answer to the precision specified. You might want to check for any under-defined sketches or other errors if your answers are not the same, especially if they are more than 1% off.
