    I had the Tiger hand-held game! It was a number of levels where you have to memorize the kind of Beetlejuice that can protect Lydia, not all of them work on all enemies. And once you had the levels memorized, there was nothing to it, there was no randomizing AI. But I loved it.

    Beetlejuice on the NES is a game that haunted me for almost 30 years! I played it as a kid as a rental and couldn't figure out a damn thing (no manual) and couldn't even beat Otho. Finally ran into it when setting up a Raspberry Pi around 2020 and beat the hell out of it for some much needed catharsis. It really is a charming game and it tried doing some different things, which is commendable, although some things worked well and some were pure tedium.
    I also appreciate the callout for David Wise's expansive body of work! He did a number of great soundtracks on the NES and GB which are often overlooked compared to his work on Donkey Kong County and future DK games.
    Thanks for all that you do! I had to subscribe to the Patreon earlier this week after I realized how much I look forward to your videos!

    In 1991 I had a one year subscription to a video game magazine called Game Player's Strategy Guide To Nintendo Games. It was basically the poor kid's version of Nintendo Power. Anyway the NES Beetlejuice game was featured in one of the issues. It had the movie poster picture on the cover. Man its been so long I forgot how big of a deal Beetlejuice was between 1988 and 1991. It seemed like he was everywhere. Toys, games, books, a cartoon series and more. I think it's criminal the sequel was not made back then, at the height of the IP's popularity. The brilliance of Tim Burton is that he made the movie safe enough for kids to watch. It opened the door for every Beetlejuice thing we got that was aimed at kids.

  • @Uncle-Jay
    @Uncle-Jay 4 месяца назад +1

    Honestly as a kid I hated this game but that was mostly due to the fact I rented it and didn't have a manual or anything. Without knowing what's going on this game really does suck balls.
    As an adult who now understands how the game operates and can play within those rules, it's not nearly as bad as I once thought it was. The last time I played it seriously I managed to get to the top down section of the house on my last life, lost, became frustrated and haven't picked it up again since.
    The game certainly does suffer some problems, one of those issues being the almost always present NES game difficulty.

    • @Uncle-Jay
      @Uncle-Jay 4 месяца назад

      Rodger Rabbit and Nightmare on Elm Street are also often unpopular NES games but I think they're fine-ish.

    • @lutherheggs451
      @lutherheggs451 4 месяца назад

      The "NES game difficulty" is a known combination of poor game design and purposely making games hard as a way to combat game rentals.
      Its has always been hilarious though when people talk about NES games being for "true gamers" because of their difficulty when there are countless devs who all worked on those games that all confirmed because of video game rentals games were purposely made unfairly hard so that they could not be beaten in hopes of forcing a kid to purchase the game. The Japanese versions are typically the intended design because rentals weren't a thing in Japan

  • @Wyrdwad
    @Wyrdwad 4 месяца назад

    Wait, you said Beetlejuice for DOS only has PC-speaker bleeps and bloops, but the footage you showed of it was accompanied by music that sounded very much beyond what the PC speaker is capable of producing. And that music was blended with sound effects that seemed to be timed to the footage you were displaying on screen, so I'm guessing... you added music in post? Or is there actually music that plays during the levels? Because what was playing sounded pretty good, I thought -- if it was added in post, where was it added from? What is the origin of that music?

    • @BurstError
      @BurstError  4 месяца назад +1

      I probably should've put something on screen, but the music used there is from the NES/Gameboy versions
