    I'm not even sure where to begin! This video was amazing! Wonderfully edited, great writing and humour throughout, and a thorough look at this slice of video gaming. I learned so much! You touched on so many games I haven't even heard of before, so thank you for doing some solid legwork to bring us this compendium. There are a lot of things I'm curious to look into more, particularly some of the Japanese titles that didn't get localized and brought over.

    Awesome video! As far as my favorite, it's definitely Friday the 13th. That game is so badly misunderstood, and they didn't help it by explaining nothing about how the game works. I've found that once people learn how the game operates, more often than not they end up enjoying it!

    • @BurstError
      @BurstError  9 месяцев назад +9

      totally agree! a lot of disregarded NES games can be so much more fun with a little more effort put into learning how the game works.

    • @blodguizer
      @blodguizer 9 месяцев назад +12

      I bought the game when it was new back in the early 90's and I spent hours playing until I finally beat it. I still always got lost in the woods. Nightmare on Elm Street is also a good game and one of the few NES games to use the four player accessory.

    • @ZeroThe14th
      @ZeroThe14th 9 месяцев назад +5

      @@blodguizer Both very fun speedruns too! The woods can be tricky, even when you know the routes to get where you want to be, you’ll still get turned around sometimes. It’s a horrible feeling to hear that buzzer going off and you’re completely lost because you went down one path too early 😆

    • @Brocuzgodlocdunfamdogson

    Fun fact about Getsu Fuma Den, it did actually make its way stateside early last year on Switch. Konami included it as a bonus for purchasing the digital deluxe version of the sequel, Getsu Fuma Den Undying Moon. In a really cool move it even recreates the lenticular box art effect on the new title screen, shimmering between images whenever you turn your Switch. The bad news? Outside of the modern start menu and emulator menu, both of which include English options, it's not translated at all. Thanks Konami 🙃

    Chiller makes sense if you're from New Jersey. The Jersey shore boardwalk arcades had light gun shooting galleries with animatronic set pieces. They upped the classic carnival dunk tank to paintball guns and a costumed fool who would yell insults. Similarly, masks of politicians or foreign heads of state would be used to similarly taunt the players. They often included horror themes or sections, including Roswell aliens and toxic waste. So Chiller makes perfect sense in that context.

    Fun fact: Dr. Chaos was originally and based on the movie based on "House". Before that, Pony Canyon was developing a game on MSX under the name "Goblin" (which is the name of the movie in Japan) and during the development of the FDS game they lost the license and ended up changing the name (which refers to House by the way) and the story.

      @TheTinker19 9 месяцев назад +1

      High quality work regardless. You certainly covered the biggest examples of NES horror. A few more odds and ends to add to the list:
      Seikima II: Akuma no Gyakushuu - an action-platformer based on a Japanese heavy metal band that leaned heavily into horror and satanic imagery.
      The Adventures of Dr. Franken (Proto) - Oddly gloomy platformer about a Frankenstein's monster finding the pieces of girlfriend so he can reassemble her. Saw release on the Game Boy (and a completely different game of the same name on SNES), but the NES version was cancelled. A prototype is available though.
      Famicom Tantei Club: Kieta Kōkeisha & Famicom Tantei Club Part II: Ushiro ni Tatsu Shōjo (FDS) - More murder mystery games than outright horror, they both do have superstitions and ghost stories at the heart of their central crimes. The second game got an upgraded port on the Super Famicom years later, and both also got ported to the Switch.
      Haunted: Halloween ‘85 & Haunted: Halloween '86 (The Curse Of Possum Hollow) - A pair of recent homebrew games, circa 2016 & 2017 respectively. Tongue-in-cheek horror-themed platformer/beat'em ups. A bit janky, but they have some charm. You can also get these on Steam.
      Taboo: The Sixth Sense - A tarot card reader from Rare. Not exactly spooky, but the readings you get are kinda cryptic and incomprehensible.
      Also, in the more general shout-outs, I think that Faxanadu deserves a mention just for the "Land of Mist" section, which is genuinely eerie. Also the Ninja Gaiden games fits well with stuff like Kabuki Quantum Fighter/Contra in terms of weirdo monsters and bio-horror elements, generally towards the late game. Air Fortress's escape music is also pretty tense and anxiety inducing.

    I found this video when Hungry Goriya tweeted it out . I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I am pleasantly surprised. This is a great video from start to finish. I had not heard of the number of these games and I find myself wanting to go check them out. Keep up the great work!

    Great video! Some really cool deep cuts, including a few I had never heard of like Matou no Houkai that I'll definitely be checking out. A title I think would have been perfect for this video is Zombie Hunter from 1987 by Hi-Score. Really interesting sidescroller-meets-action RPG title.

    Such an interesting set of games here, from extremely high quality to ones that aren't so good but that sums up the NES very well.
    There's a lot of games in this I've never seen before too! Very cool.
    Thanks for the video dude, this was very well done and so informative.

    Nice vid, never heard of a couple of these. I'd add Kick Master as another honorable mention in the dark fantasy section. Its got lots of spooky undead monsters and some nice gothic atmosphere.
    Maybe Wizards & Warriors would fit in there as well. The first one especially always struck me as having a dark fairytale kinda vibe that would fit in with stuff like Astyanax.

    3:05 - Funny thing about that. See while this never got localized for the NES back in the day, Wanpaku Graffiti actually DID arrive in the West via the overlooked and woefully underrated Splatterhouse Reboot from 2011. In there it can be played as an unlockable title along with the main three games. Though I can’t tell you exactly HOW they’re supposed to be unlocked since I was unfortunate enough to have not played it for myself.

    Another fantastic video :D
    I never knew Altered Beast had a Famicom release and it's really interesting to see the methods the decided to go with compared to the master system port.
    Also Hell Fighter's protagonist just looks eerily similar to the Prince of Persia protagonist.
