Watching this solidified even more my belief that McCaffrey needs to be the guy this year. Milton certainly has potential, but I don’t understand why everyone seems to think he should be the starter. Hasn’t shown enough on the field yet in my opinion. McCaffrey just has a crispness and decisiveness to him that’s such a welcome change from Patterson. Hopefully the days of the consistent 10 yard overthrows are behind us.

Remember to temper your expectations, things don’t always work out as well as you’d like to. Especially for new starting qbs. If the offense is ever going to improve it will have to be through Gattis and a system change.

We all know Dylan deserves that starting spot he rode Peters tail end and Sheas when he got the chance to prove himself he did he should be the starter no question. If you look at most of his incompletions they were bc of the receiver or the defender knocked it out he has a great accurate arm and can run no question for me he’s the obvious starter

damn, i forgot about some of those throws by dcaff. a few of those were placed perfectly. I'm a big Milton fan but if dcaf puts on some weight and can stay healthy, he is very talented. I think either QBs can be better than Shea. people talk about dcaf's comp%, but some of those throwaway were very smart and he quickly adjusted on broken plays, whereas a lot of times Shea hangs on to the ball too long or runs right into the pressure...

    Milton - Questionable Accuracy
    ruclips.net/video/fnbpbx6InhA/видео.html
    - Pocket Presence:
I think that McCaffrey is already a lot better in this area than Patterson was last year. We had a lot of wasted passing plays last season where Patterson had more time to throw, but got anxious and left a completely clean pocket which makes many of your options disappear on a given passing play. There were also times when Patterson probably could’ve gotten rid of the ball to a receiver and taken a hit, but instead he started scrambling. That’s not to say that Patterson never stayed in the pocket or that he never made a good throw just before he got hit, but in general, this is an area where Patterson really struggled. McCaffrey, in the little bit that he’s played, has done a much better job of avoiding pressure by stepping up into the pocket, which gives him the ability to keep his eyes downfield and make a throw if someone is open, or move directly upfield and get yards on the ground if possible. In watching these clips, I noticed that McCaffrey has actually faced a fair amount of pressure in the little bit that he’s played and for the most part has handled that pressure very well. Also, when he has had a clean pocket, he has done a decent job of not getting antsy and bailing on the pocket before he should have. I did include 3 clips where he one could argue that McCaffrey left the pocket when he didn’t have to, but none of those 3 examples were clear mistakes. Milton, in the tiny bit that he’s played, has shown a willingness to take a hit just before he throws and so far he hasn’t had many problems with bailing on a clean pocket.
You could argue that both guys, on occasion, could wait a little bit longer in the pocket to see if someone breaks open before taking off and running.
But at least both guys, when they do leave the pocket, go up-field rather bailing out around the side like Patterson did a lot last season.

*I didn’t notice any egregious examples of Milton bailing on a clean pocket when he shouldn’t have.
    - Running ability:
Both guys look like competent runners. McCaffrey has shown some big play ability. Milton might have that ability, too, but if so, he hasn’t had the opportunity to show that level of explosiveness the few times that he’s run the ball. Milton, because he’s a bigger guy, might be able to carry the ball more times per game than McCaffrey without the coaches worrying about his health.

    - Questionable decision making:
Both guys have struggled a fair amount to take care of the ball. Milton has thrown 2 interceptions in only 11 career passes. It’s worth noting that one of those passes was on 4th down where an interception is no worse than an incompletion so I would almost not count that INT. McCaffrey has yet to throw an interception at Michigan but in his 35 career passes, he’s risked a turnover a few times already. Making this video made me realize that both guys, as of last year, still had a way to go in this area. At least based on what we’ve been able to observe during games. Hopefully, by the start of the 2020 season, both guys are a lot better in this area.

People really shit on Milton for his decisions like they aren’t done 30. He’s just trying to make a play lol. Both have glaring issues and I think Miltons is more easily fixable. Milton just had to set his feet and make a throw. He has all the arm strength you need. He can throw the ball 75 yards from his knees lol. DMC needs to work on going through progressions. He reads one or two receivers, if they’re not open he takes off. I think DMC will start, but I think it’s in Michigan’s best interest if Milton figures it out and starts.

It seems like Milton's got a better arm, and he's more athletic. He can sling the ball. I'm not sure how much of a look we can get based on what we have here. (It's a great video and I love it!) But it's not enough to really see him make his reads. He can throw hard at all three levels. At the beginning of this coming season, the offensive line might not be able to give him the time to be comfortable and develop. So, he'll rely on improvisation, but he's no "Denard." McCaffrey has more experience, and he seems to be a better general. He's making his reads, and he's methodical. But I'm not seeing any deep threat. (Maybe I missed it, if I did, just timestamp it). You can't compete without a 3 level threat. Making it worse, we don't know what to expect with the line this year. Michigan is known for playing it safe. I'm glad I don't have to decide based on this video. I went to the spring game back in 94. It was a blast! I guess it comes down to who shows up with the most at camp this year. Great video.

    • @kevinanderson6094
      @kevinanderson6094  4 года назад +1

Great comment. Yeah, McCaffrey threw a pretty decent deep ball to Ambry Thomas at 5:31 and showed pretty good touch on a pass to Bell at 5:52 although that wasn't a true deep ball. With Milton, you can see that he has a huge arm, but we still haven't seen him throw a deep ball where he had to have any amount of touch or timing. But if you watch the high school highlights of both guys, both of them throw some pretty nice deep balls and Milton has a monster arm.
I agree, whoever plays better in fall camp is going to win the job!

I think you can beat OSU with a pocket passer or a more mobile guy, the most important thing is that the guy plays the position well.

I think both are pretty comparable from a speed and athleticism standpoint. Milton has a stronger arm but is less accurate.
