Monkfish - Catch and Cook - Spearfishing UK

  • I show you how I catch, prepare, fillet and cook a monkfish. I know this fish as a monkfish (Lophius piscatorius) but it is also known as; Anglerfish, Goosefish and by other names.
    Exactly one year ago I caught a big monkfish and it was my first video uploaded to youtube. This time I thought I'd show you a little more of what happens after I catch one.
    My fairly new Beuchat Mundial 3 dive computer broke and so I don't know the depth and water temperature. I think the depth was between 12-14 meters and water temp was probably around 13 degrees celsius.
    What does monkfish taste like? Incredibly good and like no other fish in our sea! It has the texture similar to lobster and no fish-like taste. The bones made a rich fish stock.
    Monkfish are a fairly uncommon catch for the spearo, spearfishing while freediving is a difficult and limited method of fishing. You really value these catches and get a great feeling of satisfaction eating something tasty, that you've caught in a specific and sustainable way.
    I apologise for the audio quality in parts of this video, I had a new camera man and he was subsequently dragged outside and shot!

    Mate - what a video! Superb footage from start to finish - probably the best catch and cooks I’ve seen 👌🏼
    Really liked the weighing, processing and cooking part - I was hoping you’d check the stomach to see if it had it eaten anything cool? That viz was cracking wasn’t it!?

    • @ryane8881
      @ryane8881  5 лет назад

      Thanks BR0SE1DON, comments like these ones make the time spent on these videos worth it. I could probably have done a better video if I had more time and experience!
      I only caught the monkfish on my 4th dive! I think most shore divers were reporting places with 2 m vis but I was getting 10+ m vis but there were big waves rolling in.
      I have loads of footage that I left out the video to try and keep the video short and flow better. I couldn't feel anything in the stomach so I binned it.
      Like I said in the video I'm no chef but it was bloody tasty, hope you find one mate!

    When I was a kid these were known as Angler fish. Monk fish was the critically endangered Angel Shark. We used to catch small pouting and pollack on the end of the Cobb at Lyme Regis and the Aquarium owner used to use some to feed the fish in the Aquarium. He had a small Angler fish in a tank and we used to watch it eat! I know it is used as Scampi as it is so Lobster like. Great catch and Vid Ryan. Cheers

      @ryane8881  4 года назад +2

      Thanks it's nice to catch something so different to most other fish I catch! From what I remember my dive watch had broken so I'm not 100% sure on the depth - probably about 12 meters. They can be found in shallow or deep water. The commercial guys catch millions of monkfish but they aren't necessarily fishing deep.

    Dammit man, why'd you take the fish out of the pan with the fond? I would have removed the fish, deglazed pan with a little white wine (or sherry), then thrwon in some onions, garlic, your rosemary or thyme and then put the fish back in the oven covered at 325. 10 min later all that liquid would have been fragrant and delicious. As the fish rested, you could thicken with cream and/or corn starch for a nice pan gravy.... damn.
